21 year old Donna Doll was a Russian language student at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. At 9.59pm on October 2nd 1970 she left the campus library where she worked a part-time job and was never seen alive again. Nine days later her fully clothed body was found in a field just outside town. The manner and cause of death was unclear but the case was treated as a murder investigation. Investigators were presented with a myriad of puzzling details, not least the fact that over 2kg of potatoes was found in Donna's stomach contents.Sources for the episode can be found hereSupport the showFollow Persons Unknown: Instagram and FacebookEmail: personsunknownpod@gmail.comWebsite with Transcripts:https://personsunknown.buzzsprout.com/

When 16-year-old Olivia "Janie" Ward died after a fall at a teen party in the woods, her family began a decades long search to find out what really happened to her on that night. With conflicting autopsies, "misplaced" records, and eyewitness statements that create more questions than answers, Janie's death sadly remains as much a mystery today as it was 35 years ago. Mike and Denise Williams had a tight knit, seemingly unbreakable bond with childhood friends, Brian and Kathy Winchester. The two couples were devout, hardworking Baptists who lived perfect, quintessentially Southern lives. Their friendship seemed ironclad. That is, until December 16, 2000, when Denise's husband Mike disappeared while duck hunting on Lake Seminole. After no body was found, everyone assumed that Mike had drowned in a tragic accident, his body eaten by alligators. But things took an unexpected turn when, within five years of Mike's disappearance, Brian Winchester divorced his wife and married Denise. Their surprising romance set tongues talking. People began wondering how long they had been a couple, and whether they had anything to do with Mike's death. It took another twelve years for the truth to come out—and when it did, it was unimaginable. Now, the full, shocking story is revealed by Mikita Brottman, acclaimed true crime writer of the “enthralling” An Unexplained Death. Through tenacious research and clear-eyed prose, she probes the psychology of a couple who killed and explores how it feels to live for eighteen years with murder on the soul. On the 9th of July 2013, a 24-year-old Ryan was driving his car through the Mohave desert through what we know as Death Valley. He was on his way back to Los Angeles after spending the day in Las Vegas, when his car ran out of gas on Hwy 15. After walking several miles towards the closest town in the intense heat, Ryan encountered what should have been an incredible stroke of luck, when a highway patrolman saw Ryan and offered to help him. The highway patrolman eventually dropped Ryan off at a rest stop in Baker, CA, where Ryan called a friend in LA to come and pick him up. When his friend arrived at the rest stop 3 hours later, Ryan was nowhere to be found. Over two months passed with no word from Ryan. Then, on September 21, 2023 local hikers found Ryan's decomposing body in the desert within the previously searched area. A thorough autopsy cited the cause of death as undetermined and, more disturbingly, it was revealed that even though Ryan's body was relatively intact, he was missing at least 6 of his internal organs leading some to believe Ryan may have been another victim of organ harvesting. Thank you to Jessi and Kristin for speaking with us about their friend Leanne.Leanne Davidson Beck was known for being fiercely independent, tenacious, and kind. She had a good heart, and she was loved by everybody who knew her. Leanne was a ‘go-getter,' and her friends say she'd always be the one encouraging them to get up and do fun things instead of sitting around bored. She could always find the positive in bad situations, and she was always giggling. Leanne was an only child, so she made lots of friends throughout her life who she remained close to and treated like family. When Leanne met a man who Leanne fell in love with, her friends and family were excited for her as she would finally get what she had always wanted: a loving, happy family. That excitement would soon turn into concern. At 3:07 am on the 29th of August 2021, Leanne's husband made a panicked call to 911, stating that his wife had vomited and was not breathing. When paramedics arrived, they noted that Leanne's eyes were fixed, and they were unable to locate a pulse. Despite the lifesaving efforts carried out by the officers on the scene, Leanne Davidson Beck was pronounced dead at around 3:30 am. She was just 33 years old. A former EMT/paramedic Bruce Goldfarb is an award-winning journalist whose work has appeared on All Things Considered, the Washington Post, USA Today, American Health, Baltimore magazine, and many other print and online publications. Goldfarb was executive assistant to the Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Maryland from 2012 to 2022. In that role, he was public information officer for the OCME and curator of the Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death. His first book, 18 TINY DEATHS, was released in 2020 and outlines the extraordinary story of Frances Glessner Lee, an independently wealthy matriarch who revolutionized the field of forensic death investigation and who is well known for her crime scene dioramas recreated in minute detail. Goldfarb's second book, OCME, Life in America's Top Forensic Medical Center, details the precarious state of forensic death investigation, which in many parts of the country is failing to provide essential public health services to the public. Frances Glessner Lee was the mother of modern forensic medicine; as an heiress and socialite, she might have been expected by her peers to live a staid, placid life. Her immersion into the gory and sometimes alarming world of post-mortem medical work led to remarkable scientific advancement in the field. Working on the famous "Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death" - realistic miniature dioramas of crime scenes for training purposes - made her a household name, but her diligence in outreach and research made her irreplaceable. The Mysterious 1995 Death Of "Jennifer Fairgate", A Woman Who Does Not Exist With Guest Host Justin Rimmel. On the evening of May 31, 1995, a woman using the alias Jennifer Fairgate checked into a luxury hotel in Oslo, Norway. Three days later, she was found dead inside her room of a single gunshot wound to the middle of her forehead. Oslo authorities ruled the death a suicide, mainly because she was found alone, there was no indication she was with anyone, nor was there any indication she was ever in the company of anyone else, and she died behind a hotel room door that generally needs to be locked from the inside. But there were other signs that this may not have been a suicide after all; that Jennifer, in fact, was murdered. If that was the case, then why? Why was she killed, who did, and the biggest question of all…who was Jennifer Fairgate. Because to this day, there has never been anybody identified as having that name that matched up to Jennifer's general description. Nobody knows who she was, where she came from, what she was in Oslo for…nobody knows her real name, her address was fake, her phone number was bogus, her place of work didn't exist. Making things even more confusing were the personal effects that were found in the room with Jennifer…deepening the mystery even more were the things that weren't found in her room. To this day Ellen's parents continue to fight for their daughters case, with more evidence pointing towards homicide. Stephen Smith died mysteriously in 2015 in South Carolina. Though his death was initially ruled a hit-and-run, it has more recently gained attention following the 2021 murders of Maggie and Paul Murdaugh, which lead to the reopening of his case two years ago. The Murdaugh family was mentioned in the initial investigation, but no charges were filed. Smith was found dead with a large gash on his forehead, a partially dislocated shoulder, and cuts and bruises on his hand. Authorities initially thought Smith had been shot, but no bullet or fragments were found. In March 2023, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) officially ruled Smith's death as a homicide. Krys skips the spooky stuff this year but makes Tori squee with the Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death. These were teaching tools made by Frances Glessner Lee to teach forensics. This lady was the shit and the Patron Saint of Policemen or the Mother of Forensics. The Nutshells debuted in 1943 and were saved by a former student. These helped investigators get it right for once. Tori tells the story of the rope swing and how we have a weird tie to a serial killer. Fox Hollow Farm and the tale of Herb Baumeister, the suspected I-70 killer. This man picked up gay men in Indianapolis and brought them to our next of the woods in Carmel. This house confused the fuck out of me, but it had a pool in the basement. He was caught due to his becoming scared of his behavior and agreeing to a search of the property. 11 sets of remains were identified and found on the property. Unfortunately Herb escaped and killed himself in Ontario. FYI, you want ghosts…the house is haunted. Krys continues with the Gruenwald Historic House in Anderson, IN. This living history museum is on a Delaware Tribal Burial Ground. Not shockingly enough, this place is haunted. #youwantsghostsOur Sources: Alanehunter.com, Americanart.si.edu, Atlasobscura.com, Deathindiorama.com, indystar.com, murderpedia.com, the-line-up.com, zillow.com, Thisisindiana.angelfire.com, Encyclopedia of Haunted Central Indiana, Thegruenewaldhouse.com, Heraldbulletin.com, Onlyinyourstate.com, Bestonlinepsychics.netOur theme music: “Danse Macabre - Busy Strings" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Support our show on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/trendylobotomypodcast Find us at FB/Instagram @TrendyLobotomyPod and at Twitter @TrendyPod as well as our blog trendylobotomypodcast.blogspot.com Support the show

Police are investigating an unexplained death in the Christchurch suburb of Riccarton this morning. People are being asked to avoid the area and part of the street is cordoned off. Reporter Lauren Crimp spoke to Māni Dunlop.
In today's episode, we try to wrap our minds around one of the most baffling disappearances and unexplained deaths we have ever heard of in the True Crime world. David Glen Lewis was a Texas based judge and attorney, well respected and incredibly active in his community. That's why it was so shocking when his wife and daughter returned from an out of town shopping trip to find him missing, their VCR still recording a football game, and freshly made turkey sandwiches in the fridge. Shockingly, on the same day that David Lewis was reported missing by his wife in Texas, his unidentified body was discovered on the side of a lonely stretch of highway near Yakima Washington. We'll get into the strange details leading up to his disappearance, the detective's outside the box thinking that helped the family get some closure, and discuss our theories and some questions we're left with from this case. 2006 - Cranston, Rhode Island. The case was doomed from the start. In July of 2006, when paramedics arrived at the apartment of 34-year-old Shawn O'Brien, they believed it was for a medical emergency. It wasn't until after he passed away—and the police consulted with the medical examiner—that they realized the magnitude of his injuries were not consistent with what allegedly happened: a fall from a seizure. His cause of death was blunt force trauma. By the time police got a search warrant, it had been 4 days and the crime scene was contaminated. What's worse, the medical examiner didn't have a clear story from police about how his injuries occurred, and ruled the manner of death as undetermined, beginning an uphill battle with the police (to investigate as a homicide) that continues to this day. 16 years later, the family is still asking themselves the same questions they did in 2006, and pushing even harder for the answers. His only daughter, Natalia St. Louis, remains determined to find out the truth about what happened to her father... and won't stop until she does. This is part two of the unexplained death of Shawn O'Brien. 2006 - Cranston, Rhode Island. Shawn O'Brien was the life of the party. Despite the trouble that he'd occasionally get into, he had the luck of the Irish, and would often emerge unscathed... until one hot summer night, when everything changed... Paramedics arrived to his basement apartment on a call for a seizure, something Shawn occasionally suffered from. According to accounts, he had been seizing for over an hour, making this a life threatening situation that ultimately took his life. But things just don't add up, and questions surround the circumstances of Shawn's death... the story just doesn't make sense. If Shawn died from a seizure, why is the medical examiner saying that Shawn's death was caused by blunt force trauma? And why won't the police rule it a homicide? 16 years later, his daughter, Natalia St. Louis has set out to fulfill a promise she made to herself as a girl: to find out the truth about what happened to her father. And if she is pressing for answers, then who will? This is part one of the unexplained death of Shawn O'Brien. By some accounts, for some reason, it seems that whatever is behind these strange lights in the sky also has a liking for targeting various livestock for some impromptu surgery and mutilation, often ending up with carcasses that show a variety of strange features such as almost selectively missing organs, strangely precise cuts, a lack of deterioration, and no rotting stench pervading the area.
Amanda Drews is the founder of Buzzy's Bees, the organization she started after her son Hudson, who was 13 months old, died of SUDC (Sudden and Unexplained Death in Childhood). Amanda started Buzzy's Bees with a mission to provide financial support to families dealing with the unexpected loss of a child. Over time, Amanda realized what families really needed and wanted was a chance to talk about their children. So she launched the Give Grief a Voice Project where families meet with professional writers and artists who capture the essence of their child and their life in a unique piece of art. In this episode we talk about: The stories we tell ourselves about death & grief. What Amanda's older son needed in his grief. How Amanda navigates her season of grief - the time between Hudson's birthday and anniversary of the day he died.

Now that the business end is out of the way we can jump headfirst into today's dark enigma… so grab your best Sherlock hat and a flask of something to warm you as we hunt down Some Chilling Disappearances in Ireland's Mysterious Vanishing Triangle There seem to be places in this world where people have the tendency to just vanish. For whatever reasons these locations have the unsettling quality of erasing people off the face of the earth, and draw to themselves clusters of disappearances that have never been solved. One such place seems to reside within the country of Ireland, where over a period of several years women began to go missing for unexplained reasons and have never been seen again, their cases unresolved, and the Vanishing Triangle has become one of Ireland's most perplexing unsolved mysteries.

Loving husband Rey Rivera got a phone call that sends him running from his Baltimore home and he never returned. Days later, his body was found beneath a hole in the Hotel Belvedere and investigators quickly leaned toward suicide. But the injuries don't match a fall from a great height and Rey wasn't suicidal. In the weeks before his death, he had become paranoid and wrote a strange note alluding to secret societies. Did Rey Rivera jump from the hotel rooftop or did something more sinister befall him? Today Ash brings you the truly infuriating case of Ellen Greenberg. Ellen was a beautiful, caring 27 year old woman who had everything going for her. She had a great relationship with her family and friends, a job as a first grade teacher, and plans to marry her fiance Sam in the coming months. There was no indication that Ellen was struggling with suicidal thoughts, yet somehow on January 26th 2011 when she was discovered dead on her kitchen floor after suffering 20+ stab wounds, her death was ruled a suicide.
