First occurring in the 1940s in the great state of Texas with a railroad station built due to a booming industry. When it no longer was needed it was torn up and turned it a road. Although the lights started when the tracks we laid down and continues on what is now the road the question remains of what is the light. Born in the Piney Woods of east Texas, Michael Mayes has had a lifelong interest in the strange, unusual, and mysterious. Growing up in Big Thicket country, he heard tales of the ghost lights, wildmen, and black panthers said to haunt the woods in his corner of southeast Texas. As an adult, Michael has endeavored to get to the bottom of some of these mysteries. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the North American Wood Ape Conservancy (NAWAC) and actively participates in their efforts. Michael is likely best known for his research on the legendary black panthers believed by many rural residents of Texas and the American South to roam the swamps, marshes, woods, and bottomlands of this country. His book Shadow Cats: The Black Panthers of North America (Anomalist Books) thoroughly explores the phenomenon and has garnered positive reviews across the board.Michael is also the author of Patty: A Sasquatch Story, a self-published children's book based on the the Patterson-Gimlin film footage of a putative sasquatch captured in October of 1967. The book features beautiful illustrations by Arkansas-based artist, Robert Swain.Michael has been featured on numerous podcasts and radio programs. He appeared on the A&E Network program The Lowe Files and has written for San Antonio television station KSAT's animated "Haunted South Texas Folklore" feature series.Michael explores the myths, folklore, and legends of Texas and North America on his Texas Cryptid Hunter blog. The blog has received more than two million page views since its inception.Michael has worked as a teacher of Texas History and football/basketball coach in the Killeen ISD for nearly 30 years. He has retired from his coaching duties and hopes that decision will free up more time for writing.Click that play button, and let's unravel the mysteries of the UNTOLD! Our destination is the middle Texas coast for trophy Redfish with expert guides and fly anglers, Steve Branch & Joe Sneed, Bay Flats Lodge. Bay Flats Lodge is an all-inclusive hunting and fishing lodge on San Antonio Bay. What was started in 1998 with a doublewide trailer on a dry patch of ground is now one of the largest fishing lodges on the Texas coast. Wild and remote, the middle Texas coast is a unique and incredible fishery. With 100,000 acres of protected national wildlife shoreline, multiple bays and estuaries to explore, and incredible biodiversity, this is one of America's top destinations for hunting big redfish on the fly. Steve Branch grew up hunting and fishing in the Big Thicket of Southeast Texas. He is a pharmacist by trade but a redfish guide at heart and has been fishing these waters for nearly 30 years. Joe Sneed, grew up in Alice Texas where he started saltwater fishing at an early age. He's been fishing these waters all of his life. OK, this episode is kind of a big deal for us. One of our founding goals for A2Z was to have a rep from Big Thicket or the Village Creek come on the show and we finally made it happen. And we couldn't have asked for a more exemplary spokesperson to drop some Big Thicket knowledge than Megan Urban, Chief of Interpretation at Big Thicket National Preserve. Which is mostly all of East Texas. If you listen to this podcast, you most likely live in the Big Thicket. —— https://www.nps.gov/bith/index.htm ——

During this month celebrating Women's History, we want to focus on the important role Maxine Johnston played in the fight to preserve the Big Thicket, the nation's first (alongside Big Cypress) National Preserve and one of the most biologically diverse areas in the country. In our travels, we have always been impressed by the tenacity and dedication of so many volunteers and citizen groups - true democracy in action. We all owe them so much. One such citizen and conservationist champion is Maxine Johnston, who was recently featured in a National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA) blog post: These 10 National Parks Wouldn't Exist Without Women. Thanks to Shannon Harris from KVLU Public Radio in Beaumont, TX, who interviewed Maxine Johnston in late 2019, we are able to share an excerpt of Maxine Johnston speaking about her involvement. The episode also features our conversation with the very helpful Ranger we met at the Visitor Center, who reviewed our Junior Ranger badges (you can hear us all take the oath together!) and spoke to us about forest restoration, longleaf pines, and the Kirby Nature Trail. We are grateful to Shelly Vitanza from Lamar University for allowing us to use photos from Lamar University tribute on the occasion of Maxine being selected as the Homecoming Parade Grand Marshal for Lamar University, where she spent more than three decades as a research librarian and then library director. She was honored both for her contributions to the university as well as her dedication and success as a conservation advocate. In fact, today at 93 years young, her LinkedIn profile lists her occupation as “Conservation Gadfly.” We are so thankful for gadflies like Maxine Johnston. We met Allison while interviewing historian Sarah Bellian. She tagged along and we actually ended up nerding out with her for nearly an hour before we started our interview with Sarah. We became fast friends and would say this is one of our favorite episodes thus far. She's studying freshwater mussels in the Village Creek, a spring-fed stream that is a part of the Big Thicket ecosystem. We talk about these animals and how they're being effected by climate change events and civil engineering projects.

It turns out that the Big Thicket isn't just a giant forest in Texas. After doing some serious digging, the team finds that the area is another hot bed for paranormal activity comparable to the Skinwalker Ranch and Bridgewater Triangle. Sasquatch, the Mothman, aliens, UFOs, ghosts... this sounds like a really fun place. The comparisons to other paranormal locations make the team believe they're on to solving all of the paranormal activity that there is ever.
Nite Callers Bigfoot Radio begins the 2016-2017 season with a very special guest tonight. We welcome our dear friend Dr. Samuel "Webb" Sentell of Louisiana.Webb is neuropsychologist with a Ph.D from Vanderbuilt University and has been the principal as well as co-author on publications regarding animal behavior. When he is not in his Shreveport, La, clinic, he may be found on a mule or in a canoe exploring habitats where anomolous, large, hair-covered hominids have been reported. He concentrates his research in a area known as the Big Piney Woods, which stretches from Fouke, Arkansas, through Northern Louisiana, East Texas and to the Big Thicket of Texas. Webb has made numerous excursions to locations where sightings and reports occur. Webb does not consider himself a 'bigfoot researcher. He is an ethologist who happens to be interested in not only participating in the scientific recognition but also the cognitive development of Sasquatch. Dr. Sentell can be reached at drsentell@gmail.com or he can be found on his Facebook page. Join us tonight for a great show.

"I have a story in my past that I have never told except to my Dad and best friend, either of whom ever believed me until this week. My best childhood friend called me this week and said" Remember that weird story you told me about the Chewbacca Man? Well I believe you now buddy!" He had an encounter this past weekend in East Texas and for some reason he's a believer now! Let me explain. When I was about 11 years old. My Dad was a land developer in east Texas around Toledo Bend and Sam Rayburn Reservoir. He would buy lake side plots of land and get a surveyor to break it down and Dad would sell the lots. He developed a few campgrounds this way. I grew up in a small town in Deep east Texas around the Sabine and Angelina National Forest just above the Big Thicket. Every so often my Dad would go see the surveyor to discuss business. Mr. W, the surveyor had his office in a small building beside his house. The surveyors house was way outside of town down a FM road in the Sabine National forest. Dad would ask me to come along sometimes because the surveyor had a son about my age. The boy's name was Tommy James "TJ". He was really a couple of years younger than me but Dad just thought I would like to come along for the ride. Mr. W and my dad would discuss land and I would go play with TJ. At this time I think I was 11 and TJ was 9. TJ had a dirt pile in his back yard we usually played in. We were playing and TJ suddenly said " There's a Chewbacca man that lives down that trail there", pointing to a thin trail in the back left corner of his back yard. "Do you wanna see it?", TJ said. I said "Chewbacca lives back there?" "Yes" TJ said, "He's a Chewbacca man."
Many encounters with Sasquatch happen so fast, it leaves people thinking “What was that?” One of the encounters on Sunday will be with a witness who saw one run across the road, jump and clear a 6 foot embankment. The witness and her husband were shocked by the size of the creature. The witness describes how the creature moved on all fours and the “hair” on the body. The second witness writes “My boyfriend and I were living about 10 miles east of Huntsville, Texas on a private property with three lakes in the Big Thicket. One night my boyfriend asked me to go get his wallet out of my truck that was parked just below the deck. I immediately had a very uneasy feeling like never before??? I asked him to go instead. He said he would stand on the deck and watch since he did not have his shoes on. I have never been afraid of the dark since it was around 9PM. I finally agreed and walked down to my truck. As my hand grabbed the door, the truck began to vibrate and shake like a 7.2 earthquake!! I was immediately paralyzed but managed to let out a blood curtailing scream as I saw a giant hairy blob jump out of the back of my truck. It seemed to fly all the way across the railroad tracks. This creature filled the entire bed of the truck and I was about one foot from it! My eyes were looking but my body was frozen. I never thought Bigfoot or Sasquatch. We thought it may have been a bear but there were never any sightings of bears there although my boyfriend had mentioned he had tossed his left over hamburger in the bed. We looked for tracks but I explained to my boyfriend that it seems to fly all the way across the railroad tracks landing on the other side.”

Tonight my guest is Tim Sermons who had an encounter with a Sasquatch when he was younger. The creature walked through his back yard and stepped over a fence. Tim also spent a lot of time as a BFRO investigator and I have asked him to bring some encounter stories that he investigated. Nowadays Tim investigates Sasquatch in East Texas with Bob Garrett, and shares some of his experiences while out in the field. Tim is a wealth of knowledge and I want to welcome him to the show. If you have had an encounter and would like to be on the show, email me at wes@sasquatchchronicles.com. To get updates and upcoming shows please visit us at www.sasquatchchronicles.com

My car was broken, and I had a class to teach at eleven. So I took the city bus, something I rarely do. I spent last summer crawling through The Big Thicket with cameras and tape recorder, photographing and taping two of the last ivory-billed woodpeckers on the earth. You can see the films at […]
