We finally return to the Universal House of Horrors! In this episode, we explore Rowland V. Lee's 1939 masterpiece Son of Frankenstein, the studio's first horror film since the Laemmles were given the boot in 1936. We also pay homage to the waning era of the "prestige horror film," ever prescient of the rebirth of the once novel genre as the almost exclusive terrain of B-pictures.Works cited:Arthur Lennig, The Immortal Count: The Life and Times of Bela Lugosi (2003)Bryan Senn, Golden Horrors: An Illustrated Critical Filmmography of Terror Cinema, 1931 – 1939 (1996)Tom Weaver, Michael Brunas and John Brunas, Universal Horrors: The Studio's Classic Films, 1931 – 1946 (2007)All original music courtesy of Niel Jakobyhttps://nieljacoby.bandcamp.com/Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/MonsterCrazeMemoirsOfficialiTunes/Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/monster-craze-memoirs/id1491963648Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3aSrQ5JFez33XuVanaFYIwPocket Casts: https://pca.st/lkra63chSoundcloud: https://soundcloud.com/user-3949861YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBGcDWtQj2wGEnlAB7P4AFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/Monster-Craze-Memoirs-106199087480182/Twitter: https://twitter.com/KennethJWaste2

Support the show! In the third episode of our horror movie theme, take a look at one of the movies at the genesis of Universal Studios movie monsters. The Frankenstein monster you picture in your head owes its form to Boris Karloff’s interpretation, and Rowland V. Lee’s 1939 film, Son of Frankenstein, would be his last appearance as the monster. We also discuss the breadth of the horror movie genre and why a film that’s not quite scary should still be considered horror.
