In this gripping and deeply unsettling episode, we explore one of the most disturbing and well-documented cases in American criminal history — the story of Edmund Emil Kemper III, better known as The Co-Ed Killer. Between 1964 and 1973, Kemper brutally murdered ten people, including his grandparents and his own mother, leaving behind a trail of horror that still haunts true crime history. But this isn't just another serial killer story. This is an examination of transformation — how a damaged child became a monster, how the system failed at every possible turn, and how a killer managed to hide in plain sight, even befriending the very police officers who were searching for him.The episode opens with the chilling phone call from a payphone in Pueblo, Colorado, where Ed calmly confessed to multiple murders. From there, we trace his life from the beginning — through a nightmarish childhood under the control of an abusive, alcoholic mother who locked him in a basement and convinced him he was inhuman. We uncover early warning signs of psychopathy — from animal cruelty to violent fantasies — that went ignored until it was too late. We examine Kemper's first murders at age fifteen, the killings of his grandparents, and his time at Atascadero State Hospital, where he learned to manipulate the mental health system and study criminal behavior from the inside. Multiple psychiatrists later declared him rehabilitated — a catastrophic misjudgment that freed him to kill again.Kemper's subsequent 1972–1973 killing spree targeted young women across California. We recount each victim's story — Mary Ann Pesce, Anita Luchessa, Aiko Koo, Cindy Schall, Rosalind Thorpe, Alice Liu, Clarnell Strandberg (his mother), and Sally Hallett — restoring their names, lives, and humanity beyond the statistics. You'll hear how Kemper selected his victims, how he gained their trust as a gentle giant with a calm demeanor, and the unspeakable acts that followed. We also expose his obsession with law enforcement culture — drinking with police officers at the Jury Room bar, collecting police equipment, and nearly being caught several times, always talking his way out with chilling ease. Finally, we follow Kemper's confession, trial, and incarceration, where he requested the death penalty but instead became a model inmate who later helped the FBI pioneer its criminal profiling techniques.Yet, at the heart of this story lies not the killer, but his victims. This episode is a memorial to their stolen lives — a reminder of the innocence destroyed, and of the families who still live with the weight of his crimes more than fifty years later.⚠️ Content Warning: This episode contains explicit descriptions of violence, murder, and disturbing psychological themes. Listener discretion is strongly advised.

This week, James and Luke were invited by Amal Abeyawardene, secretary of the British Maha Bodhi Society, to visit the London Buddhist Vihara, the oldest Buddhist temple outside of Asia. There, they explore how food offerings help tell stories of migration and tradition. **Introduction** (0:00 – 4:58) (Starter) James and Luke begin by discussing where this episode's trip takes place, along with some context about Buddhism, migration, and its connection to food. They then introduce Amal Abeyawardene, secretary of the British Maha Bodhi Society, who shares more about the history of the London Buddhist Vihara Temple. **Interview** (4:49 - 23:00) (Main Course) Amal Abeyawardene explains food offerings in Buddhist tradition and how monks, visiting nuns, and followers interact within the temple. James also speaks with Ven. Bogoda Seelawimala Nayaka Thera about the history and significance of Sanghamitta Day, and hears migration stories from Ruvini, one of the key organisers, as well as from temple visitors. **Post-Interview** (23:00 – 29:50) (Dessert) The episode ends with a reflection on food offerings, the materiality of religion, and the history of Sri Lankan migration to the UK. Fear the fear and do it anyway, zo vat Laura van Struijk & Kemper dit werken vanuit triggers samen.

This week, we're off to the deceptively cozy village of St. Mary Mead, where gossip flows freely and murder is just around the hedgerow. Join us as Miss Marple makes her unforgettable debut in The Murder at the Vicarage—knitting needles in hand and sharper than ever.My guest this week is author Kemper Donovan. Kemper began his writing career while still working as a manager, eventually publishing his debut novel, The Decent Proposal, after a lengthy journey to publication. Around the same time, he co-created the podcast All About Agatha with his friend Catherine Brobeck, celebrating the work of Agatha Christie. Following Catherine's passing in 2021, Kemper has continued the podcast on his own, and his passion for Christie's mysteries led him to create his own Ghostwriter mystery series including books The Busy Body and Loose Lips, now published by Kensington Books. He lives with his husband and their two daughters, and when not writing or podcasting, he enjoys running and making valiant attempts at playing the violin. Our drink this week is Miss Marples Cherrry Blossom from the book Agatha Whiskey by Colleen Mullany in which Kemper wrote the forward!MISS MARPLE'S CHERRY BLOSSOM Serves 2Miss Jane Marple's character is based loosely on Agatha's grandmother and her friends, and has appeared in twelve novels and twenty short stories. This month, I'm bringing you the story of three terrifying years that unfolded in Santa Cruz, California. Between 1970 and 1973, a series of murders rocked Santa Cruz, a once-peaceful beach community. Before it was all over, residents would live through unimaginable horrors - a prominent family wiped out in a mass murder by a deranged killer and two serial killers working simultaneously, but separately, in their midst.   In this second part of the series, we'll pick up the story at the tail end of 1971. John Linley Frazier's trial had just concluded, and he was sentenced to die. While the courtroom drama played out for one Santa Cruz killer, another was moving into town.   Edmund Emil Kemper III would become one of the most infamous serial killers on record. By the time he arrived in Santa Cruz in 1971, Kemper had already been convicted of a double murder.  Less than a year after his release from prison, he would commit a series of gruesome murders that would forever cast a dark shadow over sunny Santa Cruz.   I've taken an unprecedented deep dive into “The Co-ed Killer” to provide details about Kemper's life and crimes you haven't heard anywhere else.   This is part two of “Murder City: Santa Cruz, California 1970 to 1973 - Ed Kemper.    Sources: Murray, E.
