In the final episode of season one of The Celluloid Mirror we invited Ashlee Blackwell to join us to talk about two teen films: Jennifer Reeder's Knives and Skin from 2019 and Stephen Herek's Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead from 1991. Ashlee is the creator of the online scholarship Graveyard Shift Sisters, a resource highlighting the history of Black women in the horror genre and is one of the writers and producers of the Shudder Original documentary, Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror. She's currently an adjunct professor of film studies. Knives and Skin and Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead are both films about suburban) teenagers coming of age in the absence of parental guidance, catalyzed by an unexpected and obfuscated death. We talk about those similarities, our reactions, and how in some ways the teens in Knives and Skin are the children of the teens in Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead.
