That's right. Once again it's time for a brand new episode of The Flickcast. The podcast about stuff nerds love. This week it's Episode 517: Keep On Running. This week we take a look at the 1976 sci-fi classic Logan's Run, starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Farrah Fawcett-Majors and Richard Jordon. Picks this week include Chris' pick of the terrific film The Banshees of Inisherin and Joe's pick of the Amazon series The Rig. What will happen when the alien ships strike Earth? And later? Who will survive? What will life be like in that latter-day jungle? William F. Nolan pens this grim story of the days and the nights of Lewis Stillman—survivor ...He was running, running down the long tunnels, the shadows hunting him, claws clutching at him, nearer ...  Small World by William F. Nolan, that's next on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode. When I recorded Small World at the request of Mike Jones, thanks Mike, I had no idea that the author, William F. Nolan wrote the book, with George Clayton Johnson, that led to one of my favorite sci-fi movies, Logan's Run. The 1976 movie featured Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Farrah Fawcett and Peter Ustinov. I enjoy going to movie locations and when I discovered that the scene where Logan and Jessica discover an old man played by Peter Ustinov, the first elderly person either of them has ever seen, was filmed at the Fort Worth Water Gardens, I had to go see it for myself. So, if it hadn't been for you Mike Jones, requesting the short sci-fi story Small World, I would never have known that William F. Nolan also wrote Logan's Run. Long before Logan, Nolan began writing short fiction stories in 1952 and he would continue to write into his 90s!He is credited with more than 180 short stories, today's story, Small World is the 8th such story written by Nolan. Let's go back in time 65 years to the pages of Fantastic Universe Magazine, August 1957, on page 98 you will discover Small World written by William F. Nolan...Next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast… He knew his wife was dead, because he'd seen her buried. But it was only one possibility out of infinitely many! ... The Other Now, written by Murray Leinster. That's next week onThe Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, with at least one lost vintage sci-fi short story in every episode.

Pianos Become the Teeth guitarist Michael York joins us for an episode ahead of the band's first album in over four and a half years, 'Drift,' which comes out 8/26 via Epitaph. Mike reminisces on Pianos Become the Teeth's early days, when they and their 'new wave of post-hardcore' peers were doing small DIY shows and tours, and building a new underground circuit of their own, before the bigger record labels and music publications started to take notice. He then gets into the moment that Pianos and many of their peers (like Touche Amore, La Dispute, and Defeater) signed to Epitaph, the steady rise that Pianos have been on since then, and how now they've become an influential band on a whole new generation. Mike also discussed some of the musical influences and the use of analog tape loops that helped lead to the weirder, darker sound of the new album, making it with producer Kevin Bernsten (who also did their first two albums), and how the entire band relocated to Mike's uncle's cabin in the woods to make the album in seclusion. Additionally, Mike talked about what an "actual dream (no pun intended)" it is to be touring with reunited screamo legends Jeromes Dream this year, he talked about the Baltimore scene that birthed PBTT (and everyone from Beach House to Future Islands to Turnstile to JPEGMAFIA), and other artists he's been inspired by over the years, like Bon Iver, Portishead, My Bloody Valentine, Flume, SOPHIE, and more. Pick up 'Drift' on red vinyl in our store. Pianos Become the Teeth tour dates and tickets here. -- Theme music by Michael Silverstein.

Formed in London in 1969, Uriah Heep released their fourth and (to this point) most successful album, Demons and Wizards in May 1972.  This album would also see the debut of what is considered the classic lineup of Uriah Heep as bassist Gary Thain and drummer Lee Kerslake joined vocalist David Byron, guitarist Mick Box, and keyboardist/multi-instrumentalist/singer/songwriter Ken Hensley to form the group for this album.  While the album cover and title suggest medieval fantasy, Hensley has stated that it was just a collection of songs, not a concept album.  It is hard to deny the prog rock feel, however.Uriah Heep is considered a forerunner of hard rock, heay metal, and progressive rock.  They have developed quite the cult following over the years, having released 24 studio albums, 20 live albums, and 41 compilation albums.Roger Dean created the cover art, as he did for a number of prog rock groups including Yes and Asia. The name Uriah Heep comes from a character from Charles Dickens' "David Copperfield"Brian is featuring this album.  Friend of the show Bill Cook joins us in Bruce's place for this episode. The Wizard Former bassist Mark Clarke and Ken Hensley wrote this song, the opening track to the album and the first single released from the album.  The lyrics are about a wanderer who meets "the Wizard for a thousand kings."  It would be the first Uriah Heep song to be made into a video.Easy Livin'The second single off the album would be the only one to chart in the United States, making it to number 39 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Surprisingly it did not chart in the UK.  This is a common cover for party bands, though it was intended to be taken ironically.Circle of HandsThis is a deeper cut from the album, starting strong with the Hammond Organ.  With lyrics like "Circle of hands, cold spirits' plan, searching the land for an enemy,"  it is hard to not see a thread of fantasy running through the track.Rainbow DemonThis track leads off side 2 of the album.  "There rides the rainbow demon on his horse of crimson fire.  Black shadows are following closely on the heels of his desire."  This slow anthem continues with the strong organ work and combines it with a fuzzy guitar sound. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Sitting Pretty (from the motion picture "Cabaret")  Liza Minnelli and Michael York starred in this movie based on the Broadway show. STAFF PICKS:I Saw the Light by Todd RundgrenRob's staff pick was the lead-off track from Rundgren's third album, "Something/Anything?" and was placed there via inspiration from Motown's history of putting the hit songs first.  Multi-instrumentalist Rundgren wrote the track in 20 minutes and credits the use of stimulants like Ritalin for his prolific songwriting at the time.  Run Run Run  by JoJo GunneBill Cook brings us a shuffle beat number by Los Angeles based JoJo Gunne, a band formed by Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes after they left the band Spirit.  "We're all just papers in the wind."  Sweet Hitch-Hiker by Creedence Clearwater Revival Wayne presents an underplayed swamp rock song from CCR.  This is off their last album with John Fogerty.  A restaurant called the Greasy King is referenced in the song, and that restaurant is in El Cerrito, the home town of the band members.Baby Blue by BadfingerBrian finishes off the staff picks with a song from an album produced by Todd Rundgren.  Badfinger was the first group signed to The Beatles' Apple Records.  This is the last top 40 hit in the US for the group.     COMEDY TRACK:Troglodyte (Cave Man) by The Jimmy Castor BunchThis is a funk novelty song hit number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100.  The song is the introduction of a character called Bertha Butt, who would recur in other songs from the Jimmy Castor Bunch.

The screenplay by Anthony (frenzy) Shaffer, inspired by David Pinner's 1967 novel Ritual, centres on the visit of Police Sergeant Neil Howie to the isolated island of Summerisle in search of a missing girl. Howie, a devout Christian, is appalled to find that the inhabitants of the island have abandoned Christianity and now practice a form of Celtic paganism. The movie is well-regarded by critics. Film magazine Cinefantastique described it as "The Citizen Kane of horror movies", and in 2004, Total Film magazine named The Wicker Man the sixth greatest British film of all time, and during the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony the film was included as part of a sequence that celebrated British cinema. In 1989, Shaffer wrote a script treatment for The Loathsome Lambton Worm, a direct sequel with fantasy elements. Hardy had no interest in the project, and it was never produced. In 2006, an ill-received American remake was released, from which Hardy and others involved with the original have dissociated themselves. In 2011, a spiritual sequel directed by Hardy entitled The Wicker Tree, was released and featured Lee in a cameo appearance.Television actor Edward Woodward was cast in the role of Sergeant Neil Howie after the part was declined by both Michael York and David Hemmings. In Britain, Woodward was best known for the role of Callan, which he played from 1967 to 1972. After The Wicker Man, Woodward went on to receive international attention for his roles in the 1980 film Breaker Morant and the 1980s TV series The Equalizer. The film was produced at a time of crisis for the British film industry. The studio in charge of production, British Lion Films, was in financial trouble and was bought by wealthy businessman John Bentley. To convince the unions that he was not about to asset-strip the company, Bentley needed to get a film into production quickly. This meant that The Wicker Man, a film set during spring, actually began filming in October 1972: artificial leaves and blossoms had to be glued to trees in many scenes. The production was kept on a small budget. Christopher Lee was extremely keen to get the film made; he and others worked on the production without pay,(Something he seems very keen to mention at every opportunity). While filming took place, British Lion was bought by EMI Films.Iron Maiden released a single called The Wicker Man from their Brave New World album in tribute to the classic film.$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$£$ Just in case anyone has too much money and wants to give a bit to us to help with our hosting n stuff. Al Sedano, Jesse Starcher, Evan Bevins and Mark Radulich present our Comic Stripped: Logan's Run Movie and Comic Review! Logan's Run (1976) is an American science fiction action film directed by Michael Anderson and starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter, Richard Jordan, Roscoe Lee Browne, Farrah Fawcett, and Peter Ustinov. The screenplay by David Zelag Goodman is based on the 1967 novel Logan's Run by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson. It depicts a utopian future society on the surface, revealed as a dystopia where the population and the consumption of resources are maintained in equilibrium by killing everyone who reaches the age of 30. The story follows the actions of Logan 5, a "Sandman" who has terminated others who have attempted to escape death and is now faced with termination himself. Marvel Comics published a short-lived comic book series, which adapted the movie's story and briefly continued beyond it until the book was cancelled at issue #7. The Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square are featured in this merry episode about Christmas in our own backyard. We are local to Salt Lake City and enjoy a wide variety of Christmas culture. This includes the magnificent downtown venue of Temple Square, home to the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Temple Square is famously decorated for Christmas and features one of the largest Christmas light displays in the world. It also has stunning Nativity displays and art. The several buildings house crowds of all sizes to accommodate performances from local artists and groups. The most famous of these groups is the Tabernacle Choir, who has called Temple Square home since the 1860s. They first performed in the still-standing Tabernacle, for which the Choir is named. In their history of touring and regular concerts no other activity by the Choir is as well known as their annual Christmas concert, which is featured on PBS in a nationally aired broadcast every holiday season. The Christmas concerts by the Tabernacle Choir feature the Orchestra at Temple Square, a hand bell choir, dancers and actors from local companies. Nearly all local performers are volunteers. It is a Choir custom to invite renown guest artists to perform each year. Past performers include Broadway stars Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Angela Lansbury, Kelli O'Hara, Santino Fontana and Laura Osnes; R&B singer Gladys Knight; the late jazz singer Natalie Cole; pop singer David Archuleta; legendary newscasters Walter Cronkite and Tom Brokaw; historian David McCullough; the Muppets from “Sesame Street”; actors Jane Seymour, Hugh Bonneville, Richard Thomas, the late Ed Herrmann, John Rhys-Davies, Roma Downey, the late Peter Graves, Claire Bloom, Michael York and Martin Jarvis; opera stars Renée Fleming, Deborah Voigt, Frederica von Stade, Bryn Terfel, Nathan Gunn, Alfie Boe, Sissel, Rolando Villazón and four Metropolitan Opera soloists and the London-based a cappella group, The King's Singers. Collectively, the featured guests have garnered 34 Grammy Awards, 19 Tony Awards, 14 Emmy Awards, 10 Golden Globe Awards, three BAFTA Awards, one Academy Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Olivier Award. These concerts are a massive effort. In this merry episode we speak with Scott Barrick of the Tabernacle Choir about everything that goes into getting these concerts produced. This episode features a healthy dose of Tabernacle Choir music and information about a new two-hour holiday special airing on PBS before Christmas. But that's not all. In this episode we also hear from two other artists performing on Temple Square - Allie Gardner, who with Wade Farr performs a haunting version of O Come O Come Emmanuel. That song is the oldest Christmas carol on record and we tell its fascinating backstory. We also share the incredible version of The First Noel performed last Christmas by Bryson and Tierra Jones, a must-hear tear-jerking arrangement of the classic Christmas song by Jared Pierce. Earheart of The LaFresian Chronicles is back this week for the prettiest mess of a movie we've seen in a little while. Bob Fosse was truly a groundbreaking choreographer and director, and was able to create sinister, tragic worlds using nothing more than bodies. But his directing choices for this film seemed destined to undercut what made his staging so uniquely outstanding. Of course, the messiest part of this musical is the script and story itself, which takes a pretty rad story of Weimar Berlin and made it all about how little anyone had the moral fortitude to do the right thing for each other, let alone fight the fascists. In fact, the movie is saved only by two people, and we'll give you a hint - neither of them is Michael York. Book Vs Movie: “Logan's Run” The Cult Classic Novel & Film That Inspired Generations of SciFi Fans  Imagine living in a world where you can live as free as you please, but you have to allow yourself to be killed at 21 (or 30?) This dystopian tale comes from two science fiction authors, William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johson in 1976 with Logan's Run. Logan is a “Sandman” who chases “runners” who wish to escape their creepy fate.  The original story was inspired by the turbulent campus life in the 1960s and caught the imagination of SciFi fans everywhere. The setting is 2116, and from the “Little War,” it was decided that in order for earth to survive, the population needed to be kept artificially down. People live with a “palm flower” that changes color as they age. When they hit 21, it is called their ‘last day” and to report to “Sleepshop.” It is there they are killed using a pleasure-increasing toxic gas.  Logan being a Deep Sleep Operative, he can tell when people are trying to escape their fate and run to a free land called “Sanctuary.” He uses a gun called a “homer” because it can “home” their body heat and evaporate them. Sandmen also use martial arts and generally have no sympathy for runners.  Logan's love interest in “Jessica 6” distrusts him at first but eventually along with Logan's friend Francis they off to the Sanctuary. Francis, it turns out, is an oldster of 42 whose palm flower malfunctioned and he got by with plastic surgery to change his appearance Jessica and Logan are then sent off on a rocket outside of Mars to start their lives over.  The 1976 movie stars Michael York as Logan 5 and Jenny Agutter as Jessica 6. The movie changes the maximum age to 30 and this time the “last dayers” end their lives in a game called the “Carrousel” which causes them to evaporate in front of an audience.  In 2274, every person is implanted with a “life clock” that shows their age. Logan 5 and his friend Francis 7 are both Sandmen who one day kill a runner who had an “ankh” jewelry symbol. Turns out this symbol is for people who are looking for “Sanctuary” and that is how he identifies Jessica 6.  They go on the run together and there is quite a bit of wackiness with a robot named Box who wants to freeze and eat them, Washington DC mossed over and an old man with cats who wants to help them. There are also sexy costumes and special effects which were considered a big deal at the time. (Wow!)  So, between the original novel and the movie--which did we prefer? Have a listen and find out!  In this ep the Margos discuss: The journey of the 1967 story to the 1976 movie Biggest changes between book & movie The 1977 TV series that surprisingly did not take off The special effects of the time The cast: Michael York (Logan 5,) Jenny Agutter (Jessica 6,) Richard Jordan (Francis 7,) Roscoe Lee Browne (Box voice), Farrah Fawcett-Majors (Holly 13), and Peter Ustinov as the Old Man.  Clips used: Logan decides to run Logan's Run trailer “The Carousel”  Logan procures Jessica 6  Jessica and Logan meet “The Box” Music by Jerry Goldsmith Book Vs Movie is part of the Frolic Podcast Network. Murder on the Orient Express is a 1974 film conducted — er, directed — by Sidney Lumet, featuring a first-class-car-load of stars, including Lauren Bacall, Ingrid Bergman, Sean Connery, Vanessa Redgrave, John Gielgud, Anthony Perkins, Jacqueline Bisset, Michael York, and Wendy Hiller. The flick is a highly faithful adaptation of Agatha Christie's famous 1934 classic. Albert Finney stars as Hercule Poirot, a mustachioed detective settling in for a leisurely train ride on the Orient Express. But for one mysterious fellow passenger, the ride proves to be a one-way-ticket to murder town. Tasked with capturing a vicious killer on the snowed-in locomotive before the local police can railroad someone, Poirot finds himself untangling a web of sinister clues, which all point to connection to an infamous crime from years ago. Listen to Áine and Kevin stay on track discussing Amtrak, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and Mafia hits.Fun fact: Christie herself appreciated the movie's faithfulness, although she allegedly wished that Finney's facial hair was more fulsome. First, we head to 1997 (and 1967) to chat about one of the most beloved films - and subsequent trilogies - in comedy - Mike Myers as the swinging bachelor secret agent Austin Powers in his debut film. A fish out of water in the 90s, Austin has to navigate the changing notions on sex, drugs, and free love in Jay Roach's brilliantly timed, satirical, rib-tickling film hasn't lost any of its charms. It demands multiple rewatches, its brilliance only amplified by brilliant supporting turns from Elizabeth Hurley, Robert Wagner, Michael York, Mindy Sterling, and an early appearance by Will Ferrell. Next, they jump two years to the end of the millennium and an unsung charmer in Blast From The Past, Hugh Wilson's delightfully witty high-concept film about a couple (Christopher Walken and Sissy Spacek) who spend 35 years in a bunker after they mistakenly believe the Cuban Missile Crisis had begun. Brendan Fraser is dazzling as their adult son Adam, who ventures out into the world for the first time fearing toxic air and mutants, but instead falls for local girl Eve (Alicia Silverstone). who doesn't quite believe his barmy story... We kick it back to the late '90s for a trip on the juvenile, funny, sometimes cringe-worthy Mike Myers movie that showed that he was more than just Wayne from Wayne's World. The film was a big hit, permeating pop culture in many ways. But when seen now, thru a more enlighten eye, the movie has some glaring flaws and some moments that would be best omitted. Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery is rated PG-13 and was released May 2, 1997. The movie was written and starred Mike Myers as Austin Powers and Doctor Evil, Elizabeth Hurley as Vannesa Kensington, Michael York as Basil Exposition, Seth Green as Scott Evil, and Mindy Sterling as Frau Farbissina. This week on Total Movie Recall, things get grim and a little too close to 2020 reality for comfort. Definitely don't watch this movie if you're fresh out of rehab, which Ryan can tell you all about. The future is bleak, but if it's also as ruggedly handsome as Clive Owen is and has the greatest single-take of all time, it might not be so bad. Visszatérünk Amerikába, és rögtön átendülünk a hetvenes évekbe, a New Hollywood-érába. Bob Fosse 1970-es évekbeli musicalje milyen fejlődést mutat a klasszikus musical-érához képest? A film története a náci uralom alá kerülő Németországban játszódik, azaz igen közel A muzsika hangjához. Mennyivel merészebben nyúl a témához Bob Fosse musicalje? Kivesézzük, milyen egyéb társadalmi témákkal kacérkodik a meglepően progresszív film, mitől lenyűgöző Joel Grey, és végérvényesen eldöntjük, jó pasi-e Michael York.
