Send us a textWe remember loving this Creature Feature from 1999 with an all-star cast and perfectly balanced CGI & Practical Effects. But it has been a decade or more. Starring Bridget Fonda, Bill Pullman, and Oliver Platt with effects by the great Stan Winston we have high hopes that this 90s B-Movie still gets an A for Awesome. We're also wondering if the Betty White scenes are still freaking hilarious? Here's hoping.Do You Remember Liking This Movie?
This week, the gang gets ready to rumbleeeeeeee with 2000's Ready to Rumble, a total bag of dicks of a movie that you should never watch. But we watched it, so we need to break it down for you. Today, we're delving into the eerie and thought-provoking world of Flatliners (1990), a film that combines psychological thriller and sci-fi elements with a dash of supernatural intrigue. Directed by Joel Schumacher, this movie explores the consequences of toying with life and death through an ambitious group of medical students.Flatliners features an ensemble cast including Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Oliver Platt, and Kevin Bacon as medical students who embark on a risky experiment to discover what lies beyond death. They take turns inducing clinical death, experiencing the afterlife for a few minutes before being resuscitated. What starts as a scientific inquiry quickly spirals into a nightmare as their past sins and personal demons begin to haunt them in the real world. The plot thickens as each student experiences death and returns with not only vivid memories but also haunting repercussions. These experiences range from spiritually enlightening to terrifyingly disturbing, affecting each individual differently. As they push the boundaries of their experiments further, the consequences become increasingly severe, forcing them to confront unresolved issues and moral questions about life and death.Flatliners explores profound themes such as the ethical limits of scientific exploration and the idea of redemption. It questions the arrogance of human endeavors to conquer death and highlights the inescapable nature of past transgressions. The characters' confrontations with their personal ghosts serve as a metaphor for facing one's actions and seeking forgiveness.A Dad's Take For a movie night with older kids or teens, particularly those interested in the melding of science and existential questions, Flatliners offers a lot to unpack. It's a film that encourages viewers to think about deep and sometimes uncomfortable questions regarding life, death, and the afterlife. So, join us as we dive into the chilling yet fascinating world of Flatliners, examining how far one can go in the pursuit of knowledge before they've gone too far. Whether you're revisiting this classic or experiencing its thrills for the first time, there's plenty to discover and discuss.

Kevin and Tom examine the moments when the show performs at its best: is it the introspective, brooding Carmine scenes at The Bear or when the show “goes home” with secondary characters? Kevin draws a spot-on parallel of Syd/Carmy as Peggy/Don in Mad Men while Tom campaigns for more Richie exploration. The Bear can't be discussed without a dive into the show's musical choices. With the Gen X sounds of Eddie Vedder and R.E.M taking center stage, the topic of needle drops surfaces and Tom and Kevin analyze whether the FX show becomes too navel-gazey (the PYK stance: it doesn't). A central question of the show: what does joy for Carmy look like? For Tom and Kevin, joy looks a lot like Oliver Platt on the television screen. Say it with us now: God Bless Oliver Platt. It's American Folk legends meets...a super annoying and whiney kid? Yes. That's pretty much it in a nutshell. This week we discuss Tall Tale from 1995 which we were encouraged as it features Patrick Swayze but unfortunately we were very disappointed. Come on down as we try to get our lasso's around this one and discuss all things from riding ghots horses, pa's that give up way too easily and the all encompassing world of Oliver Platt. Are we telling Tall Tales this week? Let us know! Three to Tango was the 126th-highest grossing movie of 1999, sandwiched between two movies we have covered already, Drop Dead Gorgeous at 125, and Bats at 127. It opened in 8th place (behind Bats, which it would ultimately outgross) on the very not rom-com season of October the 22nd, going on to gross 10 and a half million dollars worldwide on a 20 million dollar budget. Three to Tango - which, we can't stress enough, features no tango or dancing of any kind - was written by Aline Brosch McKenna, who would go on to write romcoms like 27 Dresses and Laws of Attraction in addition to the likes of Morning Glory, Cruella, The Devil Wears Prada, and We Bought a Zoo, along with Rodney Patrick Vaccaro, who did not go on to write those things Starring Matthew Perry, Neve Campbell, Dylan McDermott, Oliver Platt, John C. McGinley, Bob Balaban, Deborah Rush, Kelly Rowan, and (appropriately) Sue for Swingers Patrick van Horn, Three to Tango has a stellar cast, but it was not one of the highest grossing romcoms of the year. She's All That, however, was. So we invited the writer of that movie, R. Lee Fleming Jr., to talk to us about Three to Tango. Lee is on twitter @QualityShorts

It's Die Hard on a plane! Again! But a bigger plane than Passenger 57!This week on the show, Phil and Liam discuss Stuart Baird's popular 1996 action-thriller EXECUTIVE DECISION starring Kurt Russell and Steven Seagal* (*kinda). Is this one of the best ‘Die Hard on a blank' films of the era? The guys aim to find out! When fanatical terrorists take control of a 747 passenger plane heading from Athens, Greece to Washington D.C., Army intelligence consultant Dr. David Grant (Kurt Russell) informs the pentagon of his suspicion that the terrorists are planning to use a stolen nerve-agent known as DZ-5 to launch a massive attack on the Eastern seaboard. If Grant is correct, this means that the government may have to shoot the plane down before it reaches US airspace, so in a last-ditch attempt to avoid this scenario and save the lives of the 400 passengers on board, Grant reluctantly becomes part of a daring mission led by Special Forces Lt. Col Austin Travis (Steven Seagal), whereby a small strike team will use an experimental aircraft to board the 747 in mid-air, and attempt to take back control of the hijacked plane. This film is positively overflowing with ‘DIE HARD DNA', from the premise to the personnel, which includes the likes of producer Joel Silver, editor Frank J. Urioste, and actress Mary Ellen Trainor, amongst others. The guys discuss how this movie raises the stakes of the ‘Die Hard on a Plane' paradigm through the utilization of a unique selling point: the treacherous mid-air transfer of a counter-assault team that includes the likes of John Leguizamo, Joe Morton, BD Wong, Whip Hubley and Oliver Platt. Despite the film's slam-bang entertainment value and multi-cultural American cast, the guys still have to wrestle with its uncomfortable racial politics, in particular its portrayal of the fictional Middle-Eastern terrorist group who are led by legendary British thespian Sir David Suchet as ‘Nagi Hassan'. They also discuss the low-key brilliance of Halle Berry's performance as the courageous flight attendant Jean, Kurt Russell's ingenious chat-up lines, and the wider symbolic significance of a key character's death… The film's excellent ensemble cast makes for a highly competitive edition of the ‘Die Hard Oscars', followed by a fun ‘Double Jeopardy' trivia quiz that will be of particular interest to fans of the late, great, perennially missed JT Walsh! Fasten your seatbelts folks! Our exit today has us examining two sports comedies centered around trying to get back in the ring. First, there is Play It To The Bone, written and directed by Ron Shelton. It stars Woody Harrelson and Antonio Banderas and centers around the boxing world. Second, there is Ready to Rumble, written by Steven Brill and directed by Brian Robbins. This stars Scott Caan and David Arquette and takes place in the world of professional wrestling. Along the way, Tripp and Ross talk about some podcast favorites (Oliver Platt and Martin Landau), professional wrestling, a lot of underwritten female characters, some uncomfortable violence, and Tripp almost creates marital strife in his life. On this week's episode of Unclear and Present Danger, Jamelle and John watched “A Time to Kill,” Joel Schumacher's 1996 adaptation of a 1989 John Grisham novel by the same name.Starring Sandra Bullock, Samuel L. Jackson and Matthew McConaughey, with supporting performances from Kevin Spacey, Oliver Platt, Charles S. Dutton, Ashley Judd, Donald Sutherland, Kiefer Sutherland and Chris Cooper, “A Time to Kill” concerns the trial of Carl Lee Hailey, a black man on trial for capital murder after killing the two men who assaulted his 10-year-old daughter. When Jake Brigance, a white lawyer who previously defended Hailey's brother, takes the job to keep Carl Lee out of the execution's chamber, the small Mississippi town of Canton, where the film takes place, is plunged into chaos. Brigance and his team must navigate national attention, a skilled and ambitious prosecutor, and a revitalized Ku Klux Klan, willing, able and eager to derail the trail and stop Brigance by any means necessary. All the while, Brigance must handle the strain on his family and his marriage. The official tagline for “A Time to Kill” was: “A lawyer and his assistant fighting to save a father on trial for murder. A time to question what they believe. A time to doubt what they trust. And no time for mistakes.”You can find “A Time to Kill” to rent or buy on demand at iTunes and Amazon. For our next episode, we're watching “Chain Reaction,” a science-fiction thriller directed by Andrew Davis and starring Morgan Freeman and Keanu Reeves.Connor Lynch produced this episode. “Ooo, yeah, throw a plate at me, Demi Moore!” - Eric On this week's episode, the 2024 Listener Request Month continues with a convo all about the absolute trash-fest that is, Indecent Proposal! Why don't we see the Moore/Redford sex scene? Why are we doing that flashback with Woody Harrelson and Demi Moore, using a bad wig and braces respectively, to comically play 19 year-olds? Why are we bothering with the lame, dueling, his & hers VoiceOver tracks? How cowardly were these filmmakers and studio execs who were scared to have Redford play an actual villain? And why didn't we ever get the Seymour Cassel spin-off film, Shackleford?! PLUS: Using Robert Redford movie titles as sex slang, fun for all! Indecent Proposal stars Demi Moore, Woody Harrelson, Robert Redford, Seymour Cassel, Oliver Platt, Billy Bob Thornton, Billy Connolly, Danny Zorn, Kevin West, and Rip Taylor as Mr. Langford; directed by Adrian Lyne. Welcome back to Unclear and Present Danger! It's our first episode of the new year and we're here with a pretty fun movie — “Executive Decision,” directed by Stuart Baird, produced by Joel Silver and starring Kurt Russell, Halle Berry, John Leguizamo, Oliver Platt, Joe Morton, Steven Seagal and many others. Music by, as you might expect, Jerry Goldsmith. In “Executive Decision,” an intelligence analyst played by Russell and a group of commandos, led by Seagal, must infiltrate a passenger jet bound for Washington DC that has been hijacked by a terrorist group. On board the jet is enough nerve toxin to kill everyone on the eastern seaboard. Most of the film is a tense standoff on the airliner, as the commandos try to defuse the nerve bomb and take down the terrorists, while the terrorists move forward with their mission. The tagline for Executive Decision was “Five miles above the earth, an elite team of six men must make an air to air transfer, in order to save 400 lives on board a 747... and 40 million below.”You can find Executive Decision to rent or buy on iTunes and Amazon. Our next episode of the podcast will be on “The Substitute,” otherwise known as “Stand and Deliver if the teacher body-slammed the students.”Connor Lynch produced this episode. Over the past five decades, there have been several docudramas devoted to stories from The Nixon Era including films focusing on his presidency (Nixon), the investigation of the Watergate break-in (All The President's Men, Dick), and even smaller episodes WITHIN his presidency such as Elvis & Nixon which came out just a few years ago starring Michael Shannon as Elvis and Kevin Spacey as Richard Nixon. But about 15 years ago, Ron Howard directed a somewhat unique POV of President Nixon.....the story of an independently filmed interview between Tricky Dick himself (Frank Langella) and a then somewhat well-known media personality David Frost who was played by Michael Sheen. This movie was also adapted by an acclaimed stage play written by Peter Morgan (The Crown) who would himself adapt his play for the big screen. And not only did it receive some awards attention (nominated for Best Picture) but considering its subject matter, it turned out to be quite entertaining! So it's time to revisit this often funny docudrama also co-starring Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, Matthew Macfayden, and Rebecca Hall and remember.....if the President does it, it's NOT ILLEGAL! ;) Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/
