We're taking a look at one of my favorite Twilight Zone episodes this week: "The Howling Man." It's the story of David Ellington, played by H.M. Wynant. A man on a backpacking trip through Europe, gets caught in a bad storm. He finds an old castle being run by an order of monks, but something is not right. Rather than help David, they want him to leave. And there is a strange sound ringing throughout the halls of the castle, a howling. When David learns that there is a man being held captive in the castle, he tries to confront the head of the order, Brother Jerome, played by John Carradine. What happens next is something that David will never forget. We'll talk about why David is so easily tricked; we'll discuss why he feels so comfortable trusting the maid at the end; and I'll reveal my moment of awe, one that is roughly 20 years in the making. So, grab your keys, and let's unlock this door to the fifth dimension. As always, spoiler alert. If you have note seen the episode, go check it out and then come back here for the analysis. We're walking through Rod Serling's class Twilight Zone series and asking difficult questions about life. So, if you love The Twilight Zone, science fiction, or even just philosophizing about life, consider joining us on this journey. There's always room for more. Three time Ms. Noir City Audra Wolfmann joins us once again to look at some of the strangest Westerns ever produced by Hollywood. Both of these films have surprisingly feminist themes while being directed by two of the studio system's true iconoclasts. First, Joan Crawford as saloon keeper Vienna is pitted against Mercedes McCambridge as the sexually-frustrated matriarch Emma Small in JOHNNY GUITAR (1954) for control of an Arizona town, and its two most eligible bachelors: The Dancin' Kid (Scott Brady) and Johnny Guitar (Sterling Hayden). Vienna has had both of them, which Emma has had none, but Emma appears to be more attracted to her feminine rival judging by the intensity of her rages whenever she's around Vienna. Directed by Nicholas Ray, whose best-known film, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE (1955), also concerns a love triangle that doesn't conform to the gender norms of the time. Also starring Ernest Borgnine, Ward Bond, and John Carradine, and filmed in striking Trucolor by Henry A. Stradling (Hitchcock's SUSPICION; A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE). Next, Barbara Stanwyck is the "high ridin' woman with a whip in director Sam Fuller's utterly bizarre FORTY GUNS (1957), a movie as obsessed with dicks as its title would suggest. Three very Earp like brothers played by Barry Sullivan, Gene Barry, and Robert Dix (they couldn't find another Barry?) ride into Cochise County, Arizona and are immediately confronted by the movie's titular 40 guns. Stanwyck is Jessica Drummond, who rules the territory with lead and leather. Incredible camera work here by Fuller and cinematographer Joseph F. Biroc (THE AMAZING COLOSSAL MAN). We discussed Fuller previously way back in our Dark AF episode (S1E7) with THE NAKED KISS (1964). FORTY GUNS also stars Dean Jagger, Elvis' milquetoast dad from KING CREOLE (S2E10), as the milquetoast sheriff. We also ask all the hard questions like why Lady Gaga doesn't want to call the musical JOKER sequel a musical? The answer may surprise you. And please give us good reviews on Apple Podcasts. We could use em. Please check out Audra's amazing podcasts: SPEAKEASILY VS. In “It's A Wonderful Life,” BEULAH BONDI played the most loving mother to JAMES STEWART. Ma Bailey is the epitome of sweetness, kindness, and supportiveness so it's quite shocking when we meet the Ma Bailey who would have existed had George Bailey not been born. She's cold, bitter, and unkind. It gives Bondi the wonderful opportunity to play two versions of the same character, which she does flawlessly. So to celebrate Mother's Day, Nan and Steve are taking a page from Bondi's playbook as they discuss the good and bad mothers of classic cinema.  SHOW NOTES:  Sources: Moms in the Movies (2014), by Richard Corliss; Actresses of a Certain Character (2007), by Axel Nissen; Irene Dunne: First Lady of Hollywood (2006), by Wes D. Aaron talks about bridging the gap between disparate genres (gothic horror and the "Spaghetti Western"), and the importance of representing the truth of America's southwestern colonial past, even in the context of genre fiction. Since we spoke, the actor has remained a familiar face on television as he and his siblings carry on the acting tradition that began with his prolific papa John Carradine. Like his dad, he eased into the niche of a “working actor,” starring on Broadway, logging 105 episodes of Madam Secretary—as the President of the United States—and even turning up in Jane Campion's Oscar-winning The Power of the Dog. He's a laid-back charmer who makes what he does look easy.

This week, Josh and Drusilla have the blues, BUT! They cheer themselves up with the incredibly chic The Sentinel (1977.) From wiki: “The Sentinel is a 1977 American supernatural horror film directed by Michael Winner, and starring Cristina Raines, Chris Sarandon, Ava Gardner, Burgess Meredith, Sylvia Miles, and Eli Wallach. The plot focuses on a young model who moves into a historic Brooklyn brownstone that has been sectioned into apartments, only to find that the building is owned by the Catholic diocese and is a gateway to Hell. It is based on the 1974 novel of the same name by Jeffrey Konvitz, who also co-wrote the screenplay with director Winner. It also features Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum, John Carradine, Jerry Orbach, Tom Berenger, Nana Visitor and Beverly D'Angelo in supporting roles.”Josh is rewatching Project Runway which causes the pair to discuss how mean the 2000s were and all the nasty reality shows and horror films from the era. Dru brings up the super fucked-up There's Something About Miriam. They discuss the Errol Morris documentary Tabloid. They also discuss The Swan and Boy Meets Boy. Drusilla is really bummed about the allegations against Justin Sane, front man for Anti-Flag. They rage about J.K. Rowling. Enya is the model!
