The USC men recorded the biggest win of the Eric Musselman era last weekend when the Trojans beat No. 7 Michigan State at home 70-64. Point guard Desmond Claude injured his knee, was sent to the locker room and sat out six minutes, but managed to return to the game and scored a team-high 19 points. Claude did however miss USC's next contest due to what is being called a bone bruise, and the Trojans fell 77-75 in dramatic fashion on the road to Northwestern. USC had stormed back from 15 down only toe give up the game-winning basket in the final seconds. The Women of Troy lost their first conference game of the season on the road at Iowa, 76-69, last weekend. USC got off to an awful start to trail 18-1, but battled back to take a lead into halftime. Lindsay Gottlieb's team struggled in the fourth quarter though, particularly on defense allowing Iowa to score 25 points in the final frame. The Women of Troy bounced back to beat Wisconsin on the road 86-64 Wednesday night. USC men's basketball senior forward Rashaun Agee also joins the showto talk about returning to his home state of Illinois to play Northwestern. He also discussed Musselman's coaching style, what the Big Ten road trips have been like for USC and much more. Agee has been playing his best basketball of the season lately averaging 12 points per game in USC's last seven contests. Shotgun and Connor then look at where both Trojan teams stand and forward at the upcoming matchups where another pair of top 10 matchups loom this weekend. The men finish up their road trip with at trip to West Lafayette to take on No. 2 Purdue Friday while the USC women return home to take on No. 8 Ohio State in the Galen Center Saturday. Things Discussed: Hoops: We are still fascinated by Mick Cronin, even as he turns a top-25 road win into just another bottom-of-the-B1G team. Wolf back next year? Musselman clearly trying to talk NBA into existence, but NBA is listening. Big Ten MBB looks like a Michigan-Michigan State race with Purdue and Illinois on the 2nd tier, though Illinois can beat anybody—they're weird because they rely on the three. Brian: MSU is a better shooting team than they look: Akins is at least, and they hit free throws. Craig: MSU is really good, unbeatable when Izzo can browbeat the refs into letting them be handsy. Counter: they don't take many threes, with three primary players on the court non-shooters: using Jaxon Kohler as a shooter, using Jeremy Fears as a shooter, Xavier Booker as a shooter. Booker is a frustrating guy, more evidence that Izzo doesn't develop guys. It's also weird that Frankie Fidler hasn't been that good, and Calipari turned Johnnell Davis into a bench player. Shoutout to Dusty May, and what he's done with Nimari Burnett. Seth: he's not the 5-star Texas Tech thought they were getting; he's the guy Alabama thought they were getting. It's about anticipation; the game is coming to him so slowly. Brian: He's Bobby Hull! We eat crow for saying the two big lineup won't work—in our defense… https://twitter.com/EvanMiya/status/1879650374128447983 During break: Effort to bring Brandon Graham to Michigan; now he's going to keep playing. The guys do math. Speaking of Eat Crow: Wink Martindale NFL interest? Sam says they'll have to pay him; Seth says someone will because he's too good of an idea for an NFL team: NYG are 28th in DVOA and blitzy/1-high again with out him, meanwhile he's beating OSU with QQH. He's the guy who invented the most popular defense in the league, regardless if people want to claim Mac and Minter's defenses are "Fangio-style." But they're going to have to commit to him: he's not taking a pay cut. Michigan would have to put an extension in front of him as well.

The USC Triple-Double Podcast -- the Peristyle Podcast's basketball-focused podcast -- returns with co-hosts Shotgun Spratling and Connor Morrissette (aka Mr. Triple Double) previewing the upcoming season for the USC men's and women's basketball teams with the Women of Troy a national championship contender and the men's team coming off an exhibition win over a top 10 Gonzaga team. But first, a special guest joins the show as USC women's associate head coach Beth Burns comes on to discuss what she expects this season after the Trojans revamped the roster with the additions of the No. 1 transfer in the nation, Kiki Iriafen, and fellow Pac-12 transfer Talia von Oelhoffen along with the No. 1 high school recruiting class in the nation, led by Etiwanda (Calif.) guard Kennedy Smith. Burns also talks about how different preparation was leading into this season with the addition of seven freshmen compared to last year having three Ivy League graduate transfers that already had a ton of collegiate experience. Shotgun and Connor then break down the Women of Troy seeking a trip to their first Final Four since 1986 along with a completely new USC men's roster with 13 incoming transfers/freshmen under new head coach Eric Musselman. The podcasting duo give three things they are looking forward to from both squads and two things they still have concerns about as the season is about to begin. They also look forward to Monday's upcoming season openers with the Women of Troy playing in the Aflac Oui-Play event in Paris, France against No. 20 Ole Miss while the men will host SoCon contender Chattanooga at the Galen Center in Musselman's USC debut. Shotgun and Connor also answer some of your questions, taking user-submitted questions from social media and The Peristyle. They discuss the potential pace USC may try to play with this season as it goes to the Big Ten, knowing Musselman has played at a quicker tempo in the past but not in the rugged midwestern conference that is known for physical battles and swallowed whistles. But then everything the podcasting duo says is overshadowed as new USC head coach Eric Musselman joins the show for the first time. The energetic Musselman talks about how he's constantly learning and taking lessons from other sports and other coaches. He also discusses how learning his new roster is coming along as the Trojans pull together 15 previously-unknown-to-each-other pieces and try to mesh into a cohesive unite. The head coach talks about the lessons he learned in the transfer portal, particularly from last year's cycle when Arkansas netted a talented roster that could beat the best teams in the country but never melded together into a consistent, cohesive unit. Musselman also reveals why versatility was such an important element in their recruiting efforts this offseason. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! But first, an entertaining and enlightening conversation with new assistant coach Michael Musselman, who isn't only entering his first year with the Trojans but also his first year as a full-time assistant after spending five years on staff at Arkansas in a variety of roles from director of recruiting to director of basketball operations. Shotgun and Connor break down the good and the bad of the Musselman hire and discuss what it means about the current state of the USC men's basketball program and the trajectory going forward. They also look at the roster Musselman will inherit and where he'll have to make some big additions before the Trojans head into the Big Ten next season. After a short break, the podcasting duo break down the final weekend of play for the Women of Troy, who defeated Baylor 74-70 in the Sweet 16 to advance to their first Elite Eight since 1994. There the Trojans fell to Connecticut 80-73 despite 29 points and 10 rebounds for JuJu Watkins, who was elite except for a fourth-quarter stretch when she couldn't make a shot and UConn couldn't miss that ended up determining the game. When Watkins went cold, there was no one there to pick her up as USC's role players, who had been so good all season fulfilling their roles, weren't able to do so in the biggest matchup of the season.
