This Week Lee and Daniel are yet again joined by friend Jack Graham to cap off the extended look into both Gene Hackman and 1990s thrillers with Peter Hyams' remake of "The Narrow Margin" (1952), "Narrow Margin" (1990). Does this train ride take too long or does it have one hell of a sexy caboose? The host's also talk about what they've watched as of late. Phew!

The time has finally arrived to traverse the JCVD universe, and we're starting it off with legendary mullets, exploding hockey rinks, time-traveling splits, and asking the most important question we've ever faced: Can JCVD really crack a walnut with his ass? (Spoiler: He said he could, and we believe him.)

Happy Valentine's Day from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. Today we appreciate one of the great, under-appreciated Hollywood directors: Peter Hyams! Our B-Sides include Peeper, Hanover Street, The Star Chamber, 2010: The Year We Make Contact, and Running Scared. Our guest is Mike Ryan, great writer, interviewer, and deep fan of Hyams' eclectic body of work. Sudden Death is a favorite, along with 2010. We discuss the auteur versus the “workman director,” why some filmmakers gather an intense following and others don't, and the lasting effect many of Hyams' films have had on the culture as well as other filmmakers. There's much talk about Hyams' ability as a cinematographer, and how rare it is to be a director that films their own movies. Mike makes the case that 2010 is more watchable than 2001: A Space Odyssey, Conor attempts to get over how corrupt Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines are as cops in Running Scared, and Dan sings the praises of Hyams' Narrow Margin. There's extended conversation about Robert Blake, co-star of Hyams' debut Busting, an appreciation of director John Badham (specifically Blue Thunder), and a reflection on the enormity of the production of End of Days.

Lechz!

Send us a textI'm splashing out four dollars for going six minute over my plan this month....you better appreciate it. Whatever your favorite six minutes may be, imagine that is where I spent all that extra scratch, just for you. On Christmas night, we went to see Nosferatu in the theater for a TMLP field trip. And although Robert Eggers had us huddled together and quaking with fear afterward in the lobby, we still had something left in the tank. Enter Running Scared, a 1986 Peter Hyams epic tale starring Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal. The cast is rounded out nicely by Steven Bauer, Joe Pantoliano, Dan Hedaya, Jimmy Smith and our true hero, Jonathan Gries. And there may just be a very special guest at the table to help us ring in the new year! Dropping that ball like it's hot.
To mark the film's 40th anniversary, we revisit Peter Hyams' 2010 – a brave follow-up to a literal monolith in science fiction film history. In what was then called a 'belated' rather than a 'legacy' sequel, the film adapts Arthur C. Clarke's novel and features a stellar cast of Roy Scheider, Helen Mirren, John Lithgow, Bob Balaban and, returning from 2001: A Space Odyssey, Keir Dullea and Douglas Rain as Dave Bowman and HAL 9000. Yes, it's full of stars. But it is a worthy follow-up that stands on its own? Or is it a pale imitation and a footnote? Find out! Follow us on Tiktok, Facebook, Instagram and Bluesky.
For the second time this season, we're talking about the sequel to one of the greatest movies ever made. That's right, though he doesn't appear in the original film, Roy Scheider leads the cast of 2010: THE YEAR WE MAKE CONTACT, Peter Hyams' (surprisingly great?) follow-up to Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY.
Yes, it's a movie in which a big monster tries to kill a bunch of people in a museum... or is it? Because I can't see nothing! Yes, this week the fellas talk all about Peter Hyams' The Relic starring the late Tom Sizemore. They talk about the horrible (lack of) lighting, the hypothalamus drinking game, the ludicrous twist involving the identity of the monster, the anti-drug PSA and much more. When the whole 2001 aftermath has Roy Scheider assuaging his guilt with a wrench, an unexpected offer to join a Russian mission to the Discovery is too tempting for him to pass up. But when he finally gets to space and war breaks out on earth, the two crews have to work together in pursuit of an unambiguously happy ending. Where does Helen Mirren fall on the scale of Russian accents? What's the creepiest thing you could hear on a huge mostly empty spaceship? Which department has very specific messaging on their inspirational poster? It's Die Hard in a museum…with a monster!Hyams Hive rise up! This week, Phil and Liam take a field trip to visit THE RELIC, Peter Hyams' expertly directed 1997 horror flick. They are accompanied on their scientific expedition by special guest Brandon Streussnig, one of the most influential and entertaining film writers around! After experimenting with psychotropic drugs while on a trip to South America, anthropologist John Whitney makes an alarming discovery, and attempts to prevent the return of several crates of research material to the US. Weeks later, the crates arrive and are sent to their intended destination at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago - an area that is suddenly beset with a series of grisly murders. As detective Vincent D'Agosta (Tom Sizemore) investigates, he and evolutionary biologist Dr. Margot Green (Penelope Ann Miller) come to the horrifying realization that a literal monster is now on the loose…and that they, and dozens of other citizens, are now trapped inside the museum along with the marauding beast! The guys start by discussing the career and filmography of director/shooter Peter Hyams, before moving into a detailed conversation about the origins and evolution of the action-horror subgenre. They delve deep into the film's myriad connections to the original 1988 classic in the ‘Die Hard DNA' section – but there's a big surprise in store for Phil later in the episode! The lads then get more specific about the film's two stars and the quality of the Stan Winston-designed monster, before wrapping things up with the Die Hard Oscars and the Double Jeopardy Trivia Quiz!THE RELIC trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vps9rpCHJFM At the time of release, THE RELIC is streaming on PlutoTV in the US and is available to rent or buy on Prime Video, YouTube, Apple/iTunes, Fandango, and all the usual platforms! There is not a lot to add to your physical media collection this week. But what there is you will want to get your hands on. Silliness gets raised to an artform with the first of the Will Ferrell/Adam McKay collaborations. Though maybe not as silly as the accents from Jeff Bridges and Tommy Lee Jones in the second of 1994's summer bomber movies. Peter Hyams gets another shout-out and one of Martin Scorsese's masterpieces finally gets a standalone release in 4K. 0:00 - Intro 0:50 - Criterion (Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid 4K) 23:13 - Shout Factory (Who's That Girl, UHF 4K) 54:36 - Paramount (Anchorman 4K) 1:04:03 - Kino (Narrow Margin 4K, Blown Away 4K) 1:22:28 - Sony (Taxi Driver 4K) 1:35:44 – New Theatrical Titles On Blu-ray & Announcements

In this episode of the show we are opening our May triptych of JCVD collaborations with Peter Hyams and we begin our deliberations by travelling back in time to 1994 to talk about Timecop. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us talk about Van Damme's drive to establish himself as an A-list action star, Ron Silver's villainous take owing a lot to Blue Steel and Peter Hyams leaning into inspirations drawn from James Cameron and Ridley Scott. We also talk about reasons why you want to put a wall in front of your time machine on rails, doing splits in the kitchen, how a police officer could afford a massive mansion, or how it seems that watching VR porn at work is not a firing offense in this version of the future. Couch Potato Theater: Timecop (1994) w/ Jean-Claude Van Damme Watch the video version of this Couch Potato Theater episode on the Fandom Podcast Network YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/@FandomPodcastNetwork Welcome to Couch Potato Theater here on the Fandom Podcast Network! On Couch Potato Theater we celebrate our favorite movies! On this episode we celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Sci-fi action classic Timecop (1994) starring Jean-Claude Van Damme! Timecop is a 1994 American science fiction action film directed by Peter Hyams and co-written by Mike Richardson and Mark Verheiden. Richardson also served as executive producer. The film is based on Timecop, a story created by Richardson, written by Verheiden, and drawn by Ron Randall, which appeared in the anthology comic Dark Horse Comics, published by Dark Horse Comics. It is the first installment in the Timecop franchise. The film stars Jean-Claude Van Damme as Max Walker, a police officer in 1994 and later a U.S. federal agent in 2004, when time travel has been made possible. It also stars Ron Silver as a corrupt politician and Mia Sara as Melissa Walker, the agent's wife. The story follows Walker's life as he fights time-travel crime and investigates the politician's plans. Timecop remains Van Damme's highest-grossing film as a lead actor (his second to break the $100 million barrier worldwide.) Although met with mixed reviews, it is generally regarded by critics as one of Van Damme's best films. The buddy cop action-comedy movie hit its heyday by the end of the 1980s with genre-defining box office winners like "48 Hrs." and "Lethal Weapon." The formula is pretty straightforward - two wise-cracking detectives, who share almost nothing in common, team up and face a barrage of messy violent drama before coming together to fight the bad guys and save the day. This formula has proven to be effective, resulting in a lot of success, with occasional bright spots in the modern era. In 1986, a year before "Lethal Weapon" changed the game, director Peter Hyams directed this 80s flick starring two up-and-coming actors of the day, dancer Gregory Hines, and comedian Billy Crystal. Although the film didn't make any significant impact on cinema and has become largely forgotten, it remains a quality example of the genre and an entertaining film with a solid story and a memorable cast. So jump in the spray-painted unmarked police car, don't lose your pants, and crank up Michael McDonald's “Sweet Freedom” as Tim Williams and guest co-hosts Gerry D from "Totally Rad Christmas" Podcast and Nicholas Pepin from "Pop Culture Roulette" Podcast I discuss “Running Scared” from 1986 on this special replay episode of the 80's Flick Flashback podcast! Here are some additional behind-the-scenes trivia we were unable to cover in this episode: When Ray and Danny were targeted by two muggers, it was obvious that the thugs were not experienced in their field. If you closely observe the tall thug in the black leather jacket, you will notice that his "pistol" was actually made up of a piece of wood with a metal rod that was kept in place by electrical tape. After returning from Florida, Ray wears a Tampa Bay Buccaneers hat. At the time the movie was filmed, the Buccaneers and Chicago Bears were division rivals. The film writer Brandon Streussnig (Vulture, Fangoria, GQ) joins the pod for a discussion about the undersung director Peter Hyams through four of his science fiction movies across a career full of genre work, films that reveal a singular style can be applied to a craftsman, a former Chicago newsman turned director who also (controversially for his industry) served as his own cinematographer. His all-star conspiracy theory thriller Capricorn One (1977) established Hyams as a filmmaker who could fuse suspense and science-fiction. He would follow this with 1981's Outland, a hybrid of Alien and High Noon starring Sean Connery, criticized at the time for being derivative but which rips when seen today, a dystopic vision of a future world ravaged by capitalism on steroids that actually anticipated the themes and production design of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner the following year. Brandon and I make the case for 2010, Hyams' 1984 sequel to Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, as a worthy followup if not an essential work, offering a hopeful and utopic vision of man's future contrasted against Kubrick's colder take. Set against the topical US/Soviet arms race of the Reagan era and packed with thrills, it's a much better film than you've been led to believe. And of course there's Timecop, the biggest hit Jean-Claude Van Damme ever had. This episode means to introduce you to the work of Peter Hyams, solid entertainments across many genres and ripe for rediscovery. What's this, a well-regarded science fiction conspiracy thriller which featured an all-star cast and yet no one remembers it?? Well yeah if this film happens to come out the same year as Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind....two BEHEMETHS from this era directed by master filmmakers/household names George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg respectively. Whereas this was directed by Peter Hyams....who actually built up a nice filmography himself over the next ten years including Running Scared, Outland, and 2010: The Year We Make Contact. And this being his breakout success which he also wrote, it has ONE hell of a doozy of a plot....Three astronauts (James Brolin, Sam Waterston, O.J. Simpson) are about to embark on a TRULY historic adventure, THE first manned mission to the planet of Mars! Except they're not actually going to Mars....they're supposed to stay on Earth and ONLY they are to know this. Hmmm....it's a massive space program conspiracy lead by the late, great Hal Holbrook who is orchestrating it from NASA. Fortunately there is ONE brave reporter who is out to uncover the truth and he's played by Elliott Gould. :) And of course don't underestimate the crazy aerial hijinks of a crazy crop-duster pilot played by the late, great Telly Savalas too while you're you're at it. :) Admit to yourself that it sounds intriguing.
