Growing evidence links heavy social‑media use to rising anxiety, bullying, and sextortion among kids, and state lawmakers are racing to respond. In this interview, Harvard Law School's Leah Plunkett—reporter for the Uniform Law Commission's child‑influencer act—and University of Virginia family‑law scholar Naomi Cahn examine how new statutes seek to verify age, require parental consent, and redesign feeds to curb addictive features.Plunkett and Cahn compare Florida's and Utah's sweeping under‑14 account bans with New York's pending “SAFE for Kids Act,” explore design mandates such as late‑night notification curfews, and explain why long‑standing COPPA rules leave teens largely unprotected. They unpack First Amendment and privacy challenges already moving through the courts, highlight emerging “digital Coogan” laws that safeguard child‑creator earnings, and note international moves—from Australia's proposed under‑16 ban to the U.K.'s Age‑Appropriate Design Code.(Credits: General 1.5 hrs | MCLE available to TalksOnLaw “Premium” or “Podcast” members. Ahead of President Donald Trump's inauguration, scores of career diplomats at the State Department were asked by Trump aides to resign. Trump campaigned on dismantling what he has called the “deep state” of federal bureaucrats, who he views as lacking loyalty to him and undermining his agenda. The forced departures were seen as confirmation of this plan – and a step toward changing the tone of the department. But who are these bureaucrats, and what are their stories? Those are the driving questions behind Netflix's “The Diplomat.” Martine Powers spoke to its creator and executive producer, Debora Cahn. The show is about the life of a no-nonsense Foreign Service officer who's suddenly made the U.S. ambassador to Britain. It is messy, it is human, and it – unintentionally – sometimes seems to be in conversation with the headlines. On “Post Reports” today, Martine and Debora talk about the stories we don't hear out of the Foreign Service, the allure of “competency porn,” and what “The Diplomat” can tell us about the value of “using your words.” Today's show was produced and mixed by Rennie Svirnovskiy, with help from Peter Bresnan. It was edited by Maggie Penman. Subscribe to The Washington Post here.

In this episode, host Aaron Fullerton speaks with The Diplomat creator-showrunner Debora Cahn about Season Two of Netflix's political drama series, how the show's writers' aim for authenticity, and more.
“The question of who's good and who's bad is always front of mind for me because my basic goal is to get to the place where no one is good or bad; everybody is in an unspeakably complicated situation. From the very beginning of the series, this event happens. We believe that it was perpetrated by Iran. Fairly quickly, we learn through the relationships that have been built over time between our heroes, Kate and Hal, and people in other countries that they've negotiated with that the assumptions we're making are completely incorrect. In fact, the people we assume have some sort of malintent toward us are being falsely accused. Someone else is playing on the stereotypes we have of those people in order to send us off in the wrong direction.I feel very fortunate that the medium I'm in is television, which is a very long form of storytelling. You're not telling a single story; you're telling a world. You're inviting people into a world and asking them to live there with you and these characters for a period of time. The best I can do is build a world where people grapple with these important questions and try their best. All I can expect from people and from myself is that we're trying to do something larger than ourselves.”Debora Cahn is the Emmy-nominated showrunner and executive producer ofNetflix's The Diplomat, a political thriller series starring Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell. She's worked with television's leading showrunners, including Shonda Rhymes, Terence Winter, Steven Levinson, and Howard Gordon. Her career began working on Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing which has led to projects such as the hit Showtime series Homeland, ABC's long-running medical drama Grey's Anatomy, and HBO's Vinyl, which was co-created by Martin Scorsese. She's the winner of two Writers Guild of America Awards for The West Wing and FX's limited series Fosse/Verdon and the 2023 Quincy Award for Responsible Statecraft.www.creativeprocess.infoIG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcastimage credit: Alex Bailey / Netflix

This episode was released on October 29, 2024.In this powerful video, Rabbi Jonathan Cahn delivers a profound prophetic word to former President Donald Trump at a gathering of 3,000 faith leaders. Cahn reveals the mystery and divine purpose behind Trump's life, drawing parallels between Trump and the biblical figure of Jehu - a warrior king called to make his nation great again by turning it back to God.Cahn speaks of Trump being "born to be a trumpet of God, a vessel of the Lord" with a destiny to overturn America's "cult of Baal" and the sacrifice of millions of unborn babies through Roe v. Wade. He emphasizes that for America to be truly great again, it must turn back to the Lord, and that Trump has been appointed for such a time as this. This prophetic message carries a weighty call to action for President Trump to seek God with all his heart and follow His leading, as the future of America and the potential for national revival and redemption hang in the balance. As Malachi O'Brien, who was present at the event, testifies, the atmosphere was charged with the presence of God, and this word felt different from the others spoken that day. It is a must-watch for all who desire to see God's purposes unfold in America.

Kennedy Distinguished Professor of Law, and the Nancy L. Buc '69 Research Professor in Democracy and Equity at the University of Virginia School of Law. Crawford, a University Distinguished Professor at the Elisabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University, who is the co-author, with Emily Gold Waldman, of Menstruation Matters (2022), among other publications, the three women recently published the book “Hot Flash How the Law Ignores Menopause and What We Can Do About It”, set out to replace the silence surrounding menopause with a deeper understanding.Hot Flash explores the cultural stereotypes associated with menopause and examines how menopause is handled in both law and medicine. The book positions menopause as one of several key stages in a person's reproductive life. Using U.S. legislation around pregnancy and breastfeeding as a framework, the authors propose updates to workplace policies and laws that would include menopause. Their work invites us to envision a legal landscape that promotes a more equitable future for all.Order your copy of Hot Flash: How the Law Ignores Menopause and What We Can Do About It, available through Stanford University Press.Featured in this episode: Millions of women are working during menopause, but US law isn't clear on employees' rights or employers' obligations Menopause treatments can help with hot flashes and other symptoms – but many people aren't aware of the latest advances Follow us on social media: Instagram: @drrpope TikTok: @vulvadoctor Twitter: @drrpope LinkedInWant more from Our Womanity? If you enjoyed this episode of Our Womanity, please subscribe, rate, and leave a review. In ihrem in diesen Tagen erscheinenden Buch «Was wahr ist. Über Gewalt und Klima» denkt sie darüber nach, wie man den einzelnen Menschen, die im Krieg zur wert- und namenlosen Masse werden, ihre Humanität zurückgeben kann. Was treibt die beiden Frauen an, was eint sie? Glauben sie an die Kraft der Öffentlichkeit, wie lässt sich Empathie ihrer Meinung nach schulen und gibt es eine Pflicht zur Zeugenschaft? Barbara Bleisch trifft die beiden zum Gespräch. Wiederholung vom 3. März 2024

Welcome to an interview with the authors of Fair Shake: Women and the Fight to Build a Just Economy, Naomi Cahn, June Carbone, and Nancy Levit. This book explains that the system that governs our economy—a winner-take-all economy—is the root cause of these myriad problems. The WTA economy self-selects for aggressive, cutthroat business tactics, which creates a feedback loop that sidelines women. The authors, three legal scholars, call this feedback loop “the triple bind”: if women don't compete on the same terms as men, they lose; if women do compete on the same terms as men, they're punished more harshly for their sharp elbows or actual misdeeds; and when women see that they can't win on the same terms as men, they take themselves out of the game (if they haven't been pushed out already). With odds like these stacked against them, it's no wonder women feel like, no matter how hard they work, they can't get ahead. Naomi Cahn is the Justice Anthony M. Kennedy Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law, as well as the Co-Director of the Family Law Center. Cahn is the author or editor of numerous books written for both academic and trade publishers, including Red Families v. Blue Families and Homeward Bound. In 2017, Cahn received the Harry Krause Lifetime Achievement in Family Law Award from the University of Illinois College of Law and in 2024 she was inducted into the Clayton Alumni Hall of Fame. June Carbone is the Robina Chair of Law, Science and Technology at the University of Minnesota Law School. Previously she has served as the Edward A. Smith/Missouri Chair of Law, the Constitution and Society at the University of Missouri at Kansas City; and as the Associate Dean for Professional Development and Presidential Professor of Ethics and the Common Good at Santa Clara University School of Law. She has written From Partners to Parents and co-written Red Families v. Blue Families; Marriage Markets; and Family Law. She is a co-editor of the International Survey of Family Law. Nancy Levit is the Associate Dean for Faculty and holds a Curator's Professorship at the University of Missouri–Kansas City School of Law. Professor Levit has been voted Outstanding Professor of the Year five times by students and was profiled in Dean Michael Hunter Schwartz's book, What the Best Law Teachers Do. She has received the N.T. Veatch Award for Distinguished Research and Creative Activity and the Missouri Governor's Award for Teaching Excellence. She is the author of The Gender Line and co-author of Feminist Legal Theory; The Happy Lawyer; The Good Lawyer; and Jurisprudence—Classical and Contemporary.
