ELLEN DREW: CLASSIC CINEMA STAR OF THE MONTH (069) Whether playing the sweet girl next door or the world-weary casino boss's moll, ELLEN DREW was an incredibly versatile leading lady who was a major star in the 1940s and 50s. She made a career of playing a wide range of roles in various genres — from Westerns to comedies to dramas to horror movies. She was nicknamed “The Candy Store Cinderella” because she was discovered scooping ice cream in a candy store on Hollywood Boulevard. And who do you think discovered her? You'll be quite surprised to find out. EPISODE 32 - “The Mary Astor Purple Diary Scandal” - 04/22/2024 One of the most scandalous trials in early Hollywood history involved actress MARY ASTOR, who had made a name for herself playing virginal ingenues and good girls. Mary, who had kept a diary for most of her life, found her words used as a sensationalized weapon against her in her quest to regain custody of her 4-year-old child in 1936 after her acrimonious divorce from her doctor husband. The trial made worldwide headlines. Her sexy, salacious diary entries showed the world a more sensual side to our virginal Mary, and, in many ways, helped propel her career into the stratosphere. Welcome to this week's episode of “Friday Night Noir” on Vintage Classic Radio, where the shadows talk and the suspense is as thick as fog. Tonight, we delve into the eerie corners of the CBS Radio Mystery Theater with "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," an adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's classic tale of deduction. Join our insightful protagonist as he uses his exceptional powers of reasoning to unravel a Parisian mystery that baffles the police. The haunting streets of Paris come alive with the voices of our stellar cast, featuring the astute Paul Lukas as the keen-minded sleuth, with support from the talented Santos Ortega and Bryna Raeburn in pivotal roles. Following this gripping tale, we rewind time to 1942 with "Suspense" and the episode "Two Sharp Knives," which springs from the mind of the masterful Dashiell Hammett. As the clock ticks in the small town of Brentwood, we follow Scott Anderson, the diligent Chief of Police played by the commanding Lew Ayres, who, along with his wise-cracking sidekick, Wally Maher, discovers that sometimes justice can be as slippery as a greased blade. The plot thickens, and tension mounts with each passing minute, courtesy of the incredible ensemble including the versatile Jeanette Nolan and the robust Edmund MacDonald. Both stories tonight are penned by literary giants. Edgar Allan Poe, the father of the detective story, gifts us with a narrative that combines his trademark gothic atmosphere with an intellectual puzzle, while Dashiell Hammett, a former Pinkerton detective himself, offers a gritty, realistic look at crime and its consequences. So, turn down the lights, settle into your armchair, and prepare for an evening of mystery and suspense that will leave your heart racing and your mind reeling. Remember, when the truth is stranger than fiction, you're in the realm of “Friday Night Noir.” Enjoy the show.

In this latest installment of The Growing Revolution, we spoke with Alex Luscombe who is one of the managers at Lukas Nursery & Butterfly Encounter in Oviedo, Florida. Their nursery is one of the top 100 independent garden centers in the USA based on total sales, and it takes a small army of around 40 people to get the job done. Alex explains how the town of Oviedo itself, was founded by Paul Lukas and his family in the early 1900's as Slovakian immigrants. Later, Lukas Nursery was started by the Lukas family members with Paul Jr as President. They have had steady growth as Oviedo has grown as a suburb of Orlando. In the 2000's, they added a 4000 sq ft butterfly encounter where they have many species of butterfly and the plants that they love to eat and reproduce on. After being inspired by their visit, guests can purchase the same plants and even starter butterfly cocoons to start their own pollinator space. Besides being a destination for school groups and families for tours, Lukas Nursery also has a Fall Festival event where they bring in food trucks, vendors, activities and games for all. Come Christmas time, tree sales profits are donated to local charities, so the Lukas family knows all about spreading karma, and giving back to the community. Alex explains that one of the benefits of working at Lukas Nursery is the family atmosphere. Everyone feels like they are an extended part of the Lukas family, which is still family run to this day.Oviedo is North East of Orlando and Lukas Nursery is happy to see everyone, and familys can visit anytime before 3:30pm to see the butterflies. Groups are required to book in advance and we recommend calling early. Their wait can be up to 6 months! We greatly appreciate Alex for making the time to speak with us. At a time when there was considerable United States naivete and even support around Hitler's domination of Europe, Warner Bros. took the calculated risk of releasing the fervently antifascist 1943 film adaptation of Lillian Helman's Tony award winning play Watch on the Rhine.   Aiding them in delivering the important message was outspoken liberal Bette Davis, Hungarian born leading man Paul Lukas (who ended up winning the Oscar for Best Actor), Dashiell Hammett (taking over writing duties from partner Hellman), and producer Hal Wallis. Dan and Vicky randomly chose the classic anti-war film to highlight on this newest episode of Hot Date but you know they'll also talk about a lot of recently seen movies and TV like Fast X, The Little Mermaid (2023), Broadway horror The Grey House, Gossip Girl, Terrifier 2, Sebastian Maniscalco's About My Father and docs about the Amityville Horror house, Donna Summer and Mary Tyle Moore.  Get your tickets to Dan's show Tales From the Guttenberg Bible at Bay Street Theater below and leave us some feedback on our social! https://www.baystreet.org/ Follow us here: hotdatepod.com FB:  Hot Date Podcast Twitter: @HotDate726 Insta:  hotdatepod

George Feltenstein and Jeff Briggs of Warner Bros join the podcast to discuss one of the most important films in the history of the studio.  The political thriller "Confessions of a NAZI SPY," (1939) was the first feature film from a major studio to take on the fascism of Hitler and the Nazi Party.  Based on real-life events, the film delves into a spy ring in New York that recruited Americans into the German American Bund.  George and Jeff detail the courage of the brothers Warner to take on this material, develop it into a feature film, and the casting of stars Edward G. Robinson, Francis Lederer, George Sanders, and Paul Lukas.  Many actors in supporting roles and production crew went uncredited due to fears of reprisals against their familys still in Europe.  George also details the remastering of the film for the new Blu-ray and the robust extras that are included.  This is a terrific film that is also one of the most important films in the Warner Bros catalog.  This episode is part of our 100th year celebration of Warner Bros.Link to article mentioned in the podcastPurchase on Moviezyng:Confessions of a Nazi SpyPurchase on Amazon:Confessions of a NAZI SPY Blu-rayThe Mortal Storm Blu-rayWatch on the Rhine DVDBlack Legion DVDHorror Sucks Ashley and Carter think horror sucks... except sometimes it doesn't. The classic mystery and comedy film The Lady Vanishes, directed by Alfred Hitchcock and released in 1938, is considered the film that put Hitchcock on the radar of Hollywood. The main stars are a beautiful, wealthy young woman named Iris Henderson, played by the 1940s star Margaret Lockwood, and an older mysterious woman named Miss Froy, played by Dame May Whitty. Micheal Redgrave plays Iris's love interest Gilbert in his first big break, and the comedy duo obsessed with cricket, Caldicott, and Charter are played by Naunton Wayne and Basil Radford. Finally, a menacing doctor named Dr. Hartz, played by Paul Lukas, is equipped with an evil laugh. The movie starts by showing an eccentric band of travelers stuck in an Eastern European ski mountain town for the night while they wait for their train. During this part, you meet a colorful cast of characters from a group of clog dancers, the comedy duo Caldicott and Charters, a beautiful English woman, a singer, and a mysterious older woman. The plot is about a woman named Iris Henderson who gets bumped on the head before her long train journey from the ski lodge. She meets Miss Froy, and they become friends. And suddenly, during the trip, Miss Froy vanishes into thin air. Oh my goodness!!! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/collin-sugg/message

20,000 Leagues Under the Sea is a 1954 American Technicolor science fiction-adventure film and one of the first features shot in CinemaScope. It was personally produced by Walt Disney through Walt Disney Productions, directed by Richard Fleischer, and stars Kirk Douglas, James Mason, Paul Lukas, and Peter Lorre. It was also the first feature-length Disney film to be distributed by Buena Vista Distribution. The film is adapted from Jules Verne's 1870 novel Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Disney also adds this disclaimer to the film which we also find appropriate: “This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20,000_Leagues_Under_the_Sea_(1954_film)
