Growing up in the Valleys, to London's West End to the big screen in Hollywood, Luke Evans joins me in the studio and his story is incredible!Raised as a Jehovah's Witness, in a strict religious community, Luke knew his true identity was in conflict with his beliefs. After persistent bullying throughout his schooling, at age 16, he left home, and his new life began. From strength to strength, Luke's career has seen him star in over 40 movies, but the life he left behind was one he knew he'd never be able to return to fully. Despite being disfellowshipped from the church, his parents never wavered in their support for him - something that really moved meThis conversation is a powerful testament to resilience, self-belief, and the importance of family. Lovely, lovely, LOVELY Luke Evans. I think he's quite possibly one of the nicest men in Hollywood - a bona fide A-Lister after star turns in Beauty and the Beast, The Hobbit, Fast & Furious, to name but a few. And yet, his early life was challenging. Raised as a Jehovah's Witness, he was unable to be open about his sexuality for fear of banishment from the church and rejection by his parents. He left home at 16, moved to Cardiff to study singing, and eventually became a successful musical theatre actor before finally landing a movie role at the age of 30, which would change his life forever. He hasn't stopped working since. Luke and I talked about being gay in Hollywood, his physical insecurities (despite being the embodiment of a certain kind of masculine perfection on-screen) and how his early days of knocking on doors with his Jehovah's Witness parents prepared him for rejection in his career. His failures? To find a soulmate until his 40s, accepting success and a failure to learn what his dad knows. I also get to study his tattoo and ask him who his favourite Hollywood co-star is and why… NEW HOW TO FAIL WITH ELIZABETH DAY PRESENTED BY HAYU LIVE TOUR DATE Friday 28th March 2025 – The London Barbican Go to: www.fane.co.uk/how-to-fail Have something to share of your own? Luke Evans says growing up in the South Wales valleys was tough at times. He was an only child in a family of Jehovah's Witnesses, bullied at school both for his religion – and for being gay. But, that quiet boy from the valleys who tried to blend into the background is now a huge international star. He shot to fame on the West End stage in the early 2000s – with roles in Rent, Miss Saigon and Les Mis. Since then, he's acted in Hollywood blockbusters like Beauty and the Beast, Fast & Furious Six and The Hobbit. Now in his mid-forties, Luke says he is happy, fulfilled and looking forward – so what songs has he chosen as his Inheritance Tracks.Inherited: Saturday Night at the Movies by The Drifters Passed on: The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face by Roberta FlackProducer: Ben Mitchell

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of November 8, 2024. Starting off, "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever" is a delightful adaptation of a book and an excellent family film to kick off the holiday season. Andy actually sat down with Producers Chet Thomas and Darin McDaniel of the show in a Movie Show Digital Extra, which you can find at this link. Also in theaters is the action suspense movie called "Elevation," which is basically “A Quiet Place” only if the creatures can't go above 8000 ft instead of not being able to see. And, a Luc Besson co-written action movie called "Weekend in Taipei" starring Luke Evans, Sung Kang, and a Taiwanese action star named Gwei Lun-Me, has some fun action pieces. As for streaming, if you like Pentatonix but don't want to hear them sing very much, you could watch "Meet Me Next Christmas" on Netflix, where Christina Milian is hoping to get some tickets to meet a potential beau at the concert on Christmas Eve, but perhaps she'll realize that everything she was looking for may have been right in front of her the whole time! The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisodes, taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics. Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen. Listen regularly on your favorite platform, at kslnewsradio.com, kslpodcasts.com, or on the KSL NewsRadio App. Join the conversation and get the latest 'nerdly' news on Facebook @FanEffectShow. Fan Effect is sponsored by Megaplex Theatres, Utah's premiere movie entertainment company.
