Get ready for razor-sharp dialogue, nonlinear storytelling, and a heist gone horribly wrong as Movie Mistrial breaks down Quentin Tarantino's explosive debut, Reservoir Dogs.Reservoir Dogs is a masterclass in indie filmmaking, packed with unforgettable characters, tense standoffs, and Tarantino's signature blend of dark humor and brutal violence. With its gripping storytelling and standout performances—especially from Harvey Keitel, Tim Roth, and Michael Madsen—the film redefined the crime genre and set the stage for Tarantino's legendary career. While Reservoir Dogs is hailed as a cult classic, some critics argue that its graphic violence and profanity-heavy dialogue can be excessive, pushing the boundaries of taste and overshadowing its storytelling finesse. Others feel its nonlinear structure, while innovative, can be disorienting for first-time viewers.Join us as we dissect Reservoir Dogs—from its unforgettable opening diner scene to its shocking final moments—and explore why it remains one of the most talked-about crime films of all time.Connect with us and share your thoughts:Twitter: http://tiny.cc/MistrialTwitterFacebook: http://tiny.cc/MistrialFBInstagram: http://tiny.cc/MistrialInstaVisit our website, www.moviemistrial.com, for more captivating episodes and to stay up-to-date with all things movies.

It stars Tim Roth and Vicky Krieps as a couple who have come to Faro Island as fans of Ingmar Bergman and want to take the tourist view while they complete their own work in a house they've rented. Like some Bergman films, as the characters move deeper into the story, the line between the audience and the actors begins to dissolve, and we're reminded that we're watching a movie starring these actors-as-characters. It's hard to describe in writing but Bergman fans will understand instantly when they see the film. Marvel Studios is truly going all-in on their only feature film this year, Deadpool & Wolverine. According to Variety, the studio plans to push for acknowledgment during awards season submitting for the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, Critics Choice, and even the Oscars. It's Hugh Jackman's performance as Wolverine that is driving this decision, as the studio plans to position the actor for the awards in the supporting actor category. Among other categories, the box office buster will likely find a spot in the Golden Globes' new category of Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. HBO released the first trailer for The Last of Us Season 2 last week. With the melancholy musical theme from Pearl Jam in the background, the trailer shows Joel and Ellie's past catching up to them five years after the events of season one. We also see a lot of new cast members including Danny Ramirez, Jeffrey Wright, and Catherine O'Hara. The Hollywood Reporter learned that DC Studios is developing a villains-centric movie centered around the characters Bane and Deathstroke. While no director has been selected yet, Captain America: Brave New World writer Matthew Orton is working on the script. On the hero side, a new animated film was greenlit and will be called Dynamic Duo - focusing on Dick Grayson and Jason Todd as the Robins in their early years. The feature film will use what's called Momo animation, a blend of CGI, stop-motion, and motion capture. Maggie Smith, the two-time Oscar and four-time Emmy winner best known for her work in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Harry Potter, and Downton Abbey has died. She was 89. On 13th September 1996, Tupac Shakur died in a still-unexplained killing (well, unless Eminem just blew the case wide open). It left a lot of things in limbo, including Vondie Curtis-Hall's spiky, charming directorial debut. Nobody wanted to see a crime comedy starring someone who'd just been the victim of a horrific crime, even if - as Graham and Mark unpack on this week's episode - the crime in Gridlock'd is rather more small-time than the web of corruption that got Tupac killed. Twenty-seven years later, and Gridlock'd has a deserved cult following for its tricky but successful blend of caper comedy and angry commentary on American healthcare. Join our hosts as they explore this, plus the wonders of Thandiwe Newton's accent, the movies Tim Roth nearly starred in, the iconic '90s hits that made this risky film possible, and the timelessness of G-funk production. Plus, Graham explains Tupac's odd, involuntary role in the Kendrick-Drake feud to Mark. All eyez on this! I went last month and spend the first part of the podcast talking about that time & games played. THEN it's on to my specific historical topic.]               Ok, now I'm really finished with Scotland. Like everything I explore for my wargame podcast, these deep dives take over my gaming for a while. That's enjoyable, but since I don't notch wargame opportunities and completions frequently, it means these subjects take me a while. Since I'm eager to explore other topics, too, eventually I have to move along. However, just as with Vietnam, Waterloo, or Market-Garden, I will have learned so much that it will be easier to dabble with similar wargames (or even return to some favorites) in the future.         For this topic, I used my vacation to Scotland last September to prompt a lot of learning about that country's military history. Though I should say it wasn't limited to when Scotland was a country—-there's a lot of history when it was a kingdom, and also earlier when it was tribal territory. Part of the joy was beginning to understand this history in more of its rich complexity than I understood from watching Braveheart alone. ;-) Since I'd already dabbled in the War for Scottish Independence, with William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, and a couple King Edwards . . . plus the early history of Roman expansion against the Caledonians, the major chapter in his history that still remained were the Jacobite rebellions. There are movies and wargames about this period, but not as many as might be expected. I'd seen the interesting faux documentary Culloden earlier, and this time I watched Rob Roy. There are a few films and other stories about this legendary+historic figure. The more recent (1990s) film with Liam Neeson, Jessica Lange, and Tim Roth does not make for accurate history, but it's a decent film that can get someone like me reading about the real history of this person. As much as we can untangle, anyway.     What's next for this podcast? Well, I'm going to take a delicate dive into the challenging topic of anthropological “first contact” in history games. As much as possible, I want to explore what happened when Europeans & the indigenous people of the New World first encountered each other. I don't really mean the Indian Wars of the plains. Instead, I'm after what happened when the first ships arrived and people “discovered” each other. This is an area where history games and wargames have not made much progress, but that's also why the subject is interesting. -Mark

Made when Gray was just 23 years old, it's a semi-autobiographical story that merges a character study of an estranged Russian-Jewish family with elements of the crime genre to arrive at something that pulls from the films of Francis Ford Coppola, Sidney Lumet and Luchino Visconti in equal measure. We begin by discussing the career of James Gray, his undersung filmography, and his reputation as a notoriously great interview subject. Ava DuVernay directed "Selma" that deals with the marches of Selma in 1965 led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This actually happened that led to an official to pass signed by President Lyndon B Johnson. A dramatized film of course but it's straightforward, it's gets to the point and the performances from the talent really give this film the attention it deserves. We get to see a MLK Jr. very human, almost too human, seeing him deal with all kinds of aspects in life epsecially with things that have nothing to do with him. People look up to this man because he is a leader and for the greatest cause any man can put themselves in because it'll literally set course to what's to come in America. The scenes of the bridge crossings are brutal and DuVernay does not relent, she shoves it to us because that is what happened. Injustice all the way to the physical level and thankfully during that time, people all over the world were able to see it and it's messed up. I'm sure in reality, it was far more brutal, you have to give it to DuVernary for showing us just a fraction of those events played out. It's hard to watch innocent woman just get beat for walking. FOR WALKING. Then again, it was George Wallace's Alabama and he didn't give a f. Tim Roth knocked the Wallace role right out of the park as he usually does. Although I feel that the film itself was a bit too scripted, like I feel the other cast were kind of robotic in a sense. The main characters, you can tell they had a lot of range to play around with and used it to their advantage. Overall, "Selma" is solid, effective and entertaining. It does get real and it makes you mad as how politics work. You ask yourself, does the president really care? Does the government really care? Regardless, when you want something you real bad, you're gonna do what you can to achieve it. MLK Jr. is the greatest example of that and he led millions.Three and a half out of four tokes.#selma #avaduvernay #injustice
