“You want to see the most beautiful thing I've ever filmed?” Uh, maybe not Mr. Spacey. But we will take a look at AMERICAN BEAUTY and the other two releases from October 1, 1999, THREE KINGS and MYSTERY, ALASKA. Time to look closer…at Episode 61 of Opening Weekend! It's the early fall of 1999 and the boys are watching three cinematic game changers: Sam Mendes' “American Beauty” and its take on repressed, suburban malaise; David O. Russell's “Three Kings”, with its fever-dream, anti-war prescience; and the biggest game changer of them all, Jay Roach's “Mystery, Alaska”…because it makes Dan want to literally change the game…from hockey to anything else. What's creepier? The way Kevin Spacey ogles Mena Suvari in her cheerleading outfit or the way Jason and Fred ogle George Clooney in his Desert Camo? And asDan enthusiastically repeats stories he told 8 episodes ago about bad jobs, living in Astoria, bad jobs, and living in Astoria (also about bad jobs and living in Astoria), Jason and Fred reminisce about the amazing artistry they witnessed that season: Jason, with the paintings of Norman Rockwell and Drew Sturzan. Fred with the acting prowess of Ed Koch and Drew Barrymore's Mom. Put down the camera, Wes Bentley, you're freaking that dead bird out…and tune into Episode 61 of Opening Weekend!

We invite you to meet the maker of the movie, Grace and Grit, Sebastian Siegel, in Q&A with Nomali Perera, followed by a session of Integral Life Practice. Inspired by one of Ken Wilber's most beloved and acclaimed books, Sebastian Siegel set out on a decade-long journey of dedication and commitment, ultimately, to Love. In this conversation, Sebastian shares his brave decision-making process around committing to this project, what writing, producing, and directing this movie has meant to him, and how he steps into his work--no matter what that might be--as an Integral Life Practice. Sebastian also discusses several other themes of the movie such as the challenging aspects of how he attempted to include the many voices of Treya and Ken Wilber as subjects and authors, the meta-voice of the transpersonal, plus, Sebastian's own voice as the creator of the movie. We also heard from Sebastian--after having been in this project for a decade--what "grace" means to him, and who Treya has become to him, a beloved woman in the integral community that not many of us had the privilege of meeting. Once the interview ended, Nomali then led a short contemplative practice in exploring the topic of grace and grit as something we all need in order to live purposefully, face challenges and birth our dreams in the same way Sebastian did, and in how Ken and Treya exemplified in this profound story of transcendent love. Released on the 4th of June, 2021, starring Mena Suvari and Stuart Townsend, with Frances Fisher, Rebekah Graf, Nick Stahl, and Mariel Hemingway, the movie Grace and Grit is now available on Amazon Prime, Apple and other streaming services, as well as in select theaters.

BEHIND THE LENS #297: Featuring Stephen Janis, Deanne Foley and Latonia Hartery

Behind The Lens

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 15, 2021 71:01

It's a full house this week on #BTLRadioShow thanks to our special guests, filmmakers STEPHEN JANIS, DEANNE FOLEY, and LATONIA HARTERY. Plus, some quick review bytes on two new films streaming everywhere right now – ME YOU MADNESS and PARADISE COVE. One of my fave films of the year already is ME YOU MADNESS, written and directed by LOUISE LINTON and starring Linton and Ed Westwick. Irreverant, politically incorrect, high octane, glamorous, breaking the fourth, rapier wit-filled darkly comedic action movie love story, ME YOU MADNESS is delicious dark decadent fun from start to finish. Linton shows good command as not only a wordsmith, but as a storyteller (much of which I believe we can credit to her trial advocacy skills as a lawyer) is well constructed and structured. Visually, Linton knocks it out of the park with polish and color thanks to cinematographers Reinhart Reschke and Boa Simon, whose lighting and lensing only serve to elevate the already sumptuous production design of Allura Johnson and Travis Zariwny, while editor Samuel Means maintains high octane energy, most notably in some over-the-top musical montages set to touchstone needle drops of the past few decades. (I want the soundtrack.) And then there's PARADISE COVE. Written by Sherry Klein and directed by Martin Guigi, PARADISE COVE stars veteran actors Todd Grinnell, Mena Suvari, and Kristin Bauer van Straten in this psychological thriller genre blend based on a true story. Van Straten stars as Bree, a once-wealthy Malibu matriarch and actress who has lost her home but refuses to leave the Paradise Cove colony, now living on the beach underneath her once home. Grinnell and Suvari are Knox and Tracey, a young married couple looking to get rich quick by flipping the Malibu beach home of Knox's recently deceased mother. Of course, that home was once Bree's and under which Knox and Tracey find her. Performances are solid with van Straten soaring as Bree. And while the script itself is unremarkable and easily fills the bill as a Lifetime TV movie versus a "theatrical" release film, elevating the film as a whole is Guigi's direction and his collaboration with DP Massimo Zeri, production designer Alessandro Marvelli (who uses color and texture to define and distinguish the character traits of our principals) and editor Eric Potter, the latter who delivers some truly shocking moments thanks to abrupt emotional cuts. Co-directors DEANNE FOLEY and LATONIA HARTERY join us live in the first half of the show talking about their charming and sweet anthology narrative about love and romance, HOPELESS ROMANTIC. Six women, six stories about love, all told within the setting of a wedding complete with the good, the bad, and the ugly cry. You laugh, you cry, you nod your head in sympathy, and by film's end you may even find yourself more of a "hopeful" romantic than not. Deanne directs one of the "segments" as well as the umbilical throughline while Latonia is not only one of the directors but a producer of the film which meant she was on hand for virtually all of the filming. Listen as Deanne and Latonia talk about the genesis of this anthology, collaboration amongst all six female directors, crafting characters and casting, diversity of characters, finding cohesive yet individually distinctive tone, using one cinematographer and one editor for the entire film and each segment, scoring, and let's not forget, the wealth of talent in the Nova Scotia area who we see on screen and behind the lens. Joining us at the midpoint of the show for a fascinating conversation about his documentary, THE FRIENDLIEST TOWN, is STEPHEN JANIS. An award-winning investigative journalist, author, musician, and now writer/co-director/editor of the documentary, Steph. http://eliasentertainmentnetwork.com

Oh, the rails! How we go off of them in this episode! This week Shane and Bryan break down the 2000 romantic comedy Loser, starring The Pie F'er, Jason Biggs, The American Beauty, Mena Suvari, Matt Damon's conjoined twin, Captain Amazing, Monk, Jimmy the Cop, and one of the McPoyles. In this film, Biggs stars as small town kid, Paul, who gets into NYU on a full academic scholarship (and a meal plan!). He learns just how sheltered he is while dealing with roommates, a professor, and a nice girl. In the psychological thriller, she plays the terminally-ill mother of a pair of teenage boys. Things go wrong when her sons attempt a theft to get money for her medical procedure. The film also stars Rainn Wilson from “The Office” as a security guard who finds himself in a dilemma with the teens. The film is available in select theaters and digital on-demand. Mena told host Paul Bomleny that she has no favorite role but believes many of her characters have provided her insight into herself. The Rhode Island native made the move to Los Angeles before she was 15 and had her first movie role at age 16 in the 1997 cult classic “Nowhere”. At age 41, she is expecting her first child with husband Michael Hope. Mena says she is as happy as can be as they await the birth of their baby boy in the spring.

This title should've been a red flag for me from the jump... But because Mena Suvari was in the headline here, I was intrigued. I think she's a fine actress, but I wish she was in way better flicks. After the Day Of The Dead remake, she's returned back to the horror genre with a typical wicked stepfather go round, but with a monster movie twist. For something we've seen done to death put a creature feature spin seems cool. I hope. Enjoy, people.

Feeling patriotic this July? Well, if there’s one thing more American than apple pie, it’s a questionable attitude toward sex — and that’s exactly what we’re serving up in our latest episode! To commemorate the 20th anniversary of AMERICAN PIE, When We Were Young looks back at the wave of 80s teen sex comedies that inspired it, from the problematic peep-show that is Porky’s to lewd, lowbrow early roles from Johnny Depp, Tom Cruise, and John Cusack. It’s no secret that these films peddled T&A to get butts in seats back then, but how titillating does all that groping, leering, and objectification of females look from a modern vantage point? Then, it’s time to ogle American Pie all over again. The rude and raunchy sleeper hit comedy helped launch the careers of Jason Biggs, Tara Reid, Chris Klein, Mena Suvari, Seann William Scott, and Natasha Lyonne amongst others, with memorable turns from comedy legends Eugene Levy and Jennifer Coolidge, too. But how does a story about four horny teen boys making a pact to lose their virginity by prom night hold up in 2019? Is American Pie still a solid laugh-and-cringe fest, or have changing sexual mores over the last two decades made its comedic prowess go limp? No flute, baked good, or suspiciously murky beer escapes scrutiny in our latest episode! "I feel like I've been in a coma for 20 years... and I'm just now waking up." That's what Lester Burnham tells us in AMERICAN BEAUTY, and may also describe some people's reaction to this Best Picture winner from 1999, which is a mite more controversial in the wake of the #MeToo movement — and allegations of sexual misconduct by its Oscar-winning lead. When We Were Young invites you to "look closer" at the stunning cinematography, the innovative editing, the memorably melancholy score, and, of course, Alan Ball's sharp-tongued screenplay, which follows a doofy dad through a particularly fatal midlife crisis and satirizes upper middle class suburbia. There's plenty to cherish here, from the darkly comedic performances of Annette Bening, Mena Suvari, and, yes, even Kevin Spacey — but what about its approach to gender and sexuality in the 90s? Is this a cautionary tale about the dangers of chasing youth in your middle age, or is watching Spacey lust after a teenager in 2019 just too... icky? Does American Beauty hold up like a plastic bag on a blustery day? Or is the bloom off the rose? Find out in our newest episode! Crooked Table Podcast - The world of film from a fresh angle

In Episode 94 of the Crooked Table Podcast, Robert Yaniz Jr. brings Michael Hinman — host of Alpha Waves Radio — onto the show to discuss his all-time favorite film, 1999's comedy/drama American Beauty. Winner of five Academy Awards (including Best Picture), the Sam Mendes-directed film is emblematic not only of the kind of fearless filmmaking that rarely breaks into the mainstream these days but also of the landmark year in cinema that was 1999. Kudos to screenwriter Alan Ball, whose work still stands one of the best examples of a film that has actually grown better with time. Kevin Spacey (yes, despite his real-life controversy) delivers an unforgettable Oscar-winning turn as a sad-sack family man whose midlife crisis/reawakening ultimately leads up to his untimely death (don't worry, this is decidedly not a spoiler). However, Spacey is matched by equally astounding work by an ensemble that includes Chris Cooper, Thora Birch, Mena Suvari, Wes Bentley and Allison Janney. In particular, the perpetually underrated Annette Bening creates an indelible impression of her own as Spacey's long-suffering wife. Whether you've never seen it or, like Mike, have revisited American Beauty in the years since it stormed theaters, take an hour to smell the roses and listen in as we discuss one of the most indelible Best Picture winners of the past two decades: American Beauty. Anyone who saw it will forever have the image of Davitian and Cohen wrestling naked in a motel room scalded into their brains. But Ken Davitian has appeared in plenty of other films, fully clothed. He’s a terrific character actor and from what I’ve seen of him being interviewed elsewhere, quite a gentle soul. In other words, nothing at all like Azamat. KEN DAVITIAN podcast excerpt: "It was in Dallas I was told we were going to do this. I kept saying to Sacha Baron Cohen, 'A fat guy in boxers, that's funny. Funny, funny! No?' He said, 'I want naked.' We ran into an engineers convention, twelve o'clock in the afternoon, somewhere in the Dallas area. We started doing our schtick with each other. I looked into his eyes. I could see him looking at the audience. He stopped. He went out of character, said 'We're not getting any response. Let's go.' We walked out of there totally in character, naked." He recently played the role of “Uncle Bernie” to perfection in an episode of NBC’s “Chuck” titled “Chuck Versus the First Kill.” He was also “Shtarker” in the otherwise forgettable Steve Carrell remake of Get Smart. He’s also been seen in movies such as Soul Men, Meet the Spartans, Holes and S.W.A.T. as well as TV shows such as “The Closer,” “ER” and “Ghost Whisperer.” Coming up, his new film Prankster just got picked up for distribution and will come out in October. He also finished a feature film with former “American Idol” finalist Katharine McPhee and Dave Annable of “Brothers & Sisters” called You May Not Kiss the Bride. It also stars Rob Schneider, Mena Suvari, Tia Carrere, Kathy Bates and Vinnie Jones. Also in the pipeline is another film, Melvin Smarty.
