Dr. David Spindler has been working as a high-performance cognitive specialist for over 25 years, helping top-level athletes unlock their brain chemistry and reach new levels of achievement. Cyclists he's worked with include Mark Cavendish, Sam Gaze, and recent podcast guest, Riley Amos. Last week, Dr. Spindler stopped by the podcast studio in Durango to talk about why he prefers to spend time with athletes on their training rides instead of just in an office, what cycling teams can learn from Formula 1 about accountability and trust, and how he helps athletes balance their professional goals with personal fulfillment off the bike. Later, Riley hops on the mic to recap his seventh-place finish at the Olympics, how his work with David helped him achieve the result, and how they're looking ahead to World Championships and his first Elite season. New Zealand is still hunting for Olympic medals after Sam Gaze couldn't keep up with the pace in the men's short-course cross country mountain biking race overnight.
In 2014, Sam Gaze was a privateering teenager from a rural farming town in New Zealand when he took the men's title in the opening round of an eliminator World Cup in Cairns, Australia. With this breakout ride, he caught the eye of Specialized Racing and relocated to Europe, where he went on to claim five world titles, including U23 World Champion and Elite Marathon and Short Track World Champion. He now races for UCI team Alpecin–Deceuninck where he competes in the WorldTour as well as the World Cup. Payson sat down with Sam in Girona to talk about breaking Nino Schurter's record-setting winning streak in the opening round of the 2018 World Cup, being mentored by Christoph Sauser, and how winning the World Championship in 2018 with his dad at the finish was the best day of his life. But they also discuss the low points, such as the infamous moment at the 2018 Commonwealth Games when his spur-of-the-moment reaction toward an opponent sparked a media frenzy. The experience intensified his ongoing struggle with depression and caused him to take a hiatus from cycling for much of 2019. In the end, it took medical advice and some encouragement from friend and former opponent, Mathieu van der Poel, to bring him back. Sam talks about his experience with depression, racing with Alpecin, and setting his sights on the Paris Olympics.Instagram: @theadventurestacheYouTube: Payson McElveen

It was gold and silver for the New Zealand mountain bikers in Birmingham overnight. The Commonwealth Games Champion, Sam Gaze, successfully defended his title, dominating the race almost from the first turn. Fellow New Zealander, Ben Oliver, wasn't far behind, crossing the line 30 seconds later to claim the silver medal. Sam Gaze says he's stoked with the 1-2 result for New Zealand, but admits it's disappointing their teammate, Anton Cooper, couldn't make the race due to Covid-19. New Zealand has also added a bronze medal to its haul overnight, with Moira Koster winning her third place playoff in the women's under 78-kilograms Judo. From gold medalist to a tarnished reputation.Sam Gaze's sportsmanship is under fire for comments after his otherwise outstanding gold medal finish in the men's mountain biking on the Gold Coast. He's been forced to apologise to fellow Kiwi rider Anton Cooper - who claimed the silver - after calling him out for not stopping when Gaze had a puncture.During the race, Gaze 'flipped the bird' when Cooper sailed past, even though he chased him down in a momentous effort to take out the gold.Radio Sport reporter Brenton Vannisselroy told the Radio Sport Breakfast that Gaze's antics have completely overshadowed what should have been a wonderful 1-2 for New Zealand."It completely took away from what should be remembered as a sporting highlight of these Games."[It was] one of the great sporting comebacks from Sam Gaze, to comeback from a flat tyre on the final lap to win. Instead we're talking about the rather prattish behaviour of a completely ungracious winner."LISTEN ABOVE AS BRENTON VANNISSELROY SPEAKS WITH THE RADIO SPORT BBREAKFAST
So, it’s about time that more of us put our big girl and boy pants on got over ourselves. The offence taking industry is in full swingIsrael Falau. Who cares what a boofhead rugby player thinks will happen to gays?Raelene Castle did, and I suppose that’s her right. But it’s not her right to try and force Israel to change his worldview.Alan Jones has come out today and talked about freedom of speech being under threat and he’s not wrong. But then again, in the same article he gets all upset because Qantas is threatening to pull its sponsorship. Grow up Alan, it’s their money that can do what they want. You can’t protect Folau’s freedom then attack Qantas’sThen there was gold medal winner Sam Gaze who took offence that silver medal-winning mate Anton Cooper didn’t wait for him to pump his tyre up. I thought it was hilarious, not offensive, and I understood that a hyped up man boy at the end of the race was letting his adrenaline get to him. But the world piled in and called him our most ungracious winner ever. Sam then apologised. The only one who came out of the whole thing well was Anton Cooper who was grown up enough to stay schtum. And finally, Taika Waititi calling New Zealand racist as. Well. of course we are. I’ve lived all over the world and every community I’ve ever lived in has a little bit of racism in it. But Mark Richardson and Duncan Garner took offence. Then their broadcasting bosses took offence and ordered them to stop talking about it. Again it was only Amanda Gillies who just rolled her eyes at the whole thing that got it right.I’ve said it many times before. The people who take offence at people who are offended are just as offensive as the offended in the first place. It’s like we’ve all become snowflakes - all of us, lefties, righties, liberals, conservatives! And if there’s one thing worse than an offended liberal snowflake it’s an outraged conservative snowflake who gets their knickers in a knot over freedom of speech.Because what their really saying is - I'm free to speak, but I really wish you weren't.
