Send us a textOn this week's episode, we're joined by Julian Chamberlayne, a partner at Stewart's, the UK law firm who last month secured a £4.5m settlement case against Planet X's insurers, after cyclist Dr Daniel Gordon was left paralysed in a crash caused by his gravel bike's carbon fork shearing in two on a grass slope. We discuss what went wrong to lead to such a horrendous crash, the case itself, and its potential implications for the cycling industry, where gravel bikes are frequently marketed as ‘go anywhere' machines, when the reality can often be very different. And in part one, Ryan and Dan chat about THAT staggering ending to the Giro d'Italia, the tactical drama that unfolded on the Colle delle Finestre, and whether Simon Yates' pink jersey triumph places him firmly in the upper echelon of British cycling greats.

In the Discourse Digest news roundup, Gareth and Ross tackle three stories where science and policy collide. First up, the Enhanced Games' latest scheme—inviting people to pay $399/month for performance-enhancing drug guidance under the guise of anti-aging and health. Then, a look at World Boxing's new sex screening policy for the women's category: what the language really means, why it matters, and how sport might manage it. Finally, a compromise attempt in California where extra medals are awarded to navigate the inclusion of trans-identified males in girls' sport—Gareth and Ross explore what's gained and lost in that trade-offAt 25:39. A new Listener Lens feature this week comes from Discourse member Tony, who asks: how should you judge your warm-up before a race? And Finally (not quite today!), British ultra runner William Goodge is under fire after suspicious data emerged from his trans-Australia record attempt. Ross recalls a similar case he investigated, and the duo asks: why, in an age of abundant tracking tech, are we still debating whether these runs really happened? At 42:58. This week's Center Stage belongs to one of the most dramatic finales in recent Grand Tour history. Simon Yates won the Giro d'Italia with a stunning final mountain stage raid—equal parts science, strategy, and surprise. Mike and Ross unpack the physiology and tactics behind Yates' triumph: Did del Toro and Carapaz concede the maglia rosa because they hit their physiological limits, or were they undone by tactical missteps and pacing errors? We gulped down some pungent juice before recording this amazing episode! The main topics were the two big pieces of news: Jim Walsmley won't be racing Western States, and Kilian Jornet is making training videos now. Jim is the GOAT and we gave him an 85% chance of winning just last week. He's the supermassive black hole at the center of the Western States galaxy. Without Jim at the start line, how does it change the race? Kilian is the GOAT too (yes, we have a GOAT herd), and he just released a training video! He abides by the "no secrets" approach, and we analyzed every frame of that video to try to find clues about whether he might be beatable. Answer: no. Bonus answer: Kilian is the best and it's fascinating that he started his own video series by talking about his heat training. And this one was full of great topics! Other topics: our magical coaching day at the US Mountain Championships, thoughts on training for mountain races, Unbreakable 2 cancellation, the wild triumph of Simon Yates, a new bicarb gel that could upend the bicarb market, the wild science of broccoli sprouts and a new juice supplement from Nomio, anti-histamines and athletic performance, why we're eating dark chocolate (it tastes good), lung training via breathing devices, the relationship between speed work and form in ultras, a hypothetical about Conner Mantz racing Leadville or Western States, an article in the New York Times on unethical mountaineering, training with a newborn, dealing with life transitions, fitting the Naked Belt, the cost of running, cheaper suphershoes, and an incredible poem on failing and flying.Everyone forgets that Icarus also flew. Also, if Icarus had broccoli sprouts and Kilian's training video, maybe he would have flown a bit longer. We love you all! HUZZAH! As the dust settles on a sensational 20th stage of the Giro d'Italia, Lionel Birnie is joined by Matt White – one of the people in cycling who knows Simon Yates best – to analyse how the race was won (and lost) on the Colle delle Finestre. Until the eve of the Giro, Matt was head of performance at the Jayco-Alula team, having been with the Green Edge organisation since it was founded. Until this season, Yates had spent his whole professional career with the team and he and Matt shared many highs and one memorable low. Matt was in the team car when Simon Yates lost the 2018 Giro on the Finestre following Chris Froome's audacious long-range attack on stage 19, so he has a fascinating insight into the tactical and psychological issues that played out on the mountain on Saturday. Yates bounced back later that season to win the Vuelta a España. But what else stood out to Matt as he watched the stage on Saturday? How did Visma-Lease A Bike pull it off, and could Isaac Del Toro, Richard Carapaz and their respective teams have done anything differently? Johan Bruyneel, George Hincapie, and Spencer Martin break down how Simon Yates came from behind to claim a surprising overall win at the 2025 Giro d'Italia. They dive into exactly what happened between Carapaz and Del Toro on the decisive Colle delle Finestre, which resulted in the two highest-placed riders heading into Stage 20 being unable to work together to reel in Yates as he rode clear to conquer the same climb where he lost the race in 2018. Additionally, they go through a few of the non-GC highlights, including Lidl-Trek's incredible race, Wout van Aert's return to form, and much more. Tushy: Over 2 million butts love TUSHY. Welcome back to Spin Cycle. This week, the crew dissects a thrilling conclusion of the Giro d'Italia. Was it won by Simon Yates or lost by UAE Team Emirates? Perhaps somewhere in between? What is absolutely sure is the deployment of Wout van Aert via the Wout Signal was yet another example of why he's the rider you want on your Grand Tour team. Plus: meeting the pope, Mads Pedersen's new underwear, and what Tibaut Pinot got up to over the weekend.

Dane Cash and Cosmo Catalano break down the final mountain stage of the Giro d'Italia, where Simon Yates turned the race on its head.

They discuss a few main takeaways from the stage before previewing tomorrow's massive GC mountain set piece, predicting who will win, how the action will play out, and which riders present the best betting value.
Johan Bruyneel and Spencer Martin break down Stage 17 of the Giro d'Italia, where race leader Isaac del Toro responded to yesterday's time loss by attacking to win the stage and add to his GC lead. They discuss a few main takeaways from the stage and what this means for the GC picture going into the final two mountain stages before previewing Stage 18, predicting who will win, how the action will play out, and which riders present the best betting value.
Het kan alle kanten op deze Giro. Roglic, das war einmahl. Ayuso, mentale problemen.
Johan Bruyneel and Spencer Martin break down the explosive action from Stage 16 of the Giro d'Italia, where the race's first true mountain stages exploded the GC, with UAE's Isaac del Toro finally showing signs of weakness as he struggled to hold the race lead, as Richard Carapaz, Derek Gee and Simon Yates closed in, and pre-race favorites Primož Roglič and Juan Ayuso both fell out of the GC completely, with Roglič leaving the race entirely. They discuss a few main takeaways from the stage before previewing yet another brutal stage tomorrow on Stage 17, predicting who will win, how the action will play out, and which riders present the best betting value. Johan Bruyneel, George Hincapie, and Spencer Martin break down Sunday's stage 15 of the Giro d'Italia, which saw Carlos Verona take the win with a long-range solo attack and the GC come to life with UAE's Isaac del Toro easily defending his race lead while distancing pre-race favorite Primož Roglič. In addition to highlighting Del Toro's incredible strength so far, they dive into the question of whether he can realistically hold on to win the overall and become the second 21-year-old, behind his teammate Tadej Pogačar, to win the overall at a Grand Tour. They also discuss he and his UAE team's potential vulnerability due to the apparent confusion about who the team's leader is, and how the brutally hard third week will shuffle the final overall standings. Before they take off, they predict who will win Stage 16's critical mountain stage and how the GC picture will look afterward. Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP You can also watch this episode over on my YouTube channel here! Guys, the Giro is rolling along, and what a race it's shaping up to be. Ahead of the final week of racing, it's still all to play for. We've got the mega-talented young Isaac Del Toro holding onto the Maglia Rosa, bookies' favourite Primoz Roglič dropping out of contention, and a handful of riders poised to go all out to try and unseat UAE's dominance before the finish in Rome. Tom Southam's been called up to bat for EF Education Easypost, so he's cruising around Italy in the team car, and he's already netted a pair of stage wins with Richard Carapaz and Kasper Asgreen! With Southam away, we've had a bit of a roster change for this month's Race Communique; we're joined by my old mate and fellow ex-professional, Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe sports director, the Flying Mullet himself - that's right, it's Shane Archbold. Shane'o joins me and Luke Durbridge - fresh off the back of the Tour of Hungary - to dissect the racing so far at the Giro and speculate what we might see in this last week of racing. The Giro is known for being a pretty chaotic race, and the 2025 edition is no different. So far, we've seen some amazing stages, and the GC storyline has been incredible, too. From guys like Luke Plapp - the Plappinator - finally getting his hands in the air in Europe, Wout van Aert completing a monster comeback on the Strade Bianche gravel stage in dominant fashion, and unsung hero Daan Hoole taking some massive scalps in the stage 10 time trial. UAE are gripping the pink jersey pretty tightly, but guys like Simon Yates, Richard Carapaz, and our old mate Derek Gee are creeping up behind him, not to mention his own teammate Juan Ayuso waiting in the wings. Sadly for Shane, his Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe team are having some pretty rotten luck. First, they lost Jai Hindley - a former Giro winner - in the first week to a crash on the wet, slippery roads of Naples. Then, Dani Martinez, last year's runner-up, slipped out of the GC and hasn't looked like his former self so far. Of course, they went into the race with the defending champion Primoz Roglič, whose GC bid looks to be over after a brutal day of racing over the Monte Grappa. It's not all doom and gloom for Bora, though; young Italian super domestique Giulio Pellizzari has shown a hell of a lot of promise so far, and no doubt has a bright career ahead of him. In this week's PeloChat, Durbo shines the spotlight on XDS Astana and their ongoing hunt for UCI points to avoid being relegated at the end of the season. A change in tactics from the Kazakh team means they're no longer racing for the win, which sounds absolutely crazy for a pro cycling team. Instead, they're trying to stack the top 10 with riders to scrape together as many UCI points as they can. They've managed to claw themselves back up the team rankings and away from the relegation zone, putting other teams at risk and giving us fans a whole other narrative to follow this season. Finally, we have a Giro-themed CommuniQuiz. I'm Quiz Master this week, and I'll be testing Shane and Durbo's knowledge on all things Giro d'Italia. Which former ‘Junior World Champion' used to sell cleaning products, didn't turn pro until 26, and then went and won the Giro?! You'll have to listen to find out! Enjoy this month's Communique, everybody. We'll be back at the same time next month, just a week or so out from the start of the biggest bike race of the year: the Sibiu Cycling Tour over in Romania…only kidding; of course it's the Tour de France! Cheers, Mitch The Race Communiqué is brought to you by TrainingPeaks! Track, plan, and train smarter—just like the pros. Get 20% off TrainingPeaks Premium now at http://www.trainingpeaks.com/litp
