It was gold and silver for the New Zealand mountain bikers in Birmingham overnight. The Commonwealth Games Champion, Sam Gaze, successfully defended his title, dominating the race almost from the first turn. Fellow New Zealander, Ben Oliver, wasn't far behind, crossing the line 30 seconds later to claim the silver medal. Sam Gaze says he's stoked with the 1-2 result for New Zealand, but admits it's disappointing their teammate, Anton Cooper, couldn't make the race due to Covid-19. New Zealand has also added a bronze medal to its haul overnight, with Moira Koster winning her third place playoff in the women's under 78-kilograms Judo. Reporter Bridget Tunnicliffe is in Birminghm.

New Zealand scooped up gold, silver and bronze medals at the Commonwealth Games overnight. Gold and silver came from the mountain biking track, with defending champion Same Gaze topping the podium. Fellow New Zealander Ben Oliver wasn't far behind, crossing the line 30 seconds later to claim the silver medal. There was some controversy around Gaze's gold medal at the last Commonwealth Games, after he accused his then teammate Anton Cooper of poor sportsmanship for overtaking him while he was trying to fix a punctured tyre. Gaze apologised and was later diagnosed with depression. He told Morning Report he's grown a lot from that experience, and this win means so much more as a result. It was bronze for swimming sensation Lewis Clareburt in the 200-metre Individual Medley The bronze is his third medal of the games, after he won gold in both the 400-metre version of the event, and the 200-metre butterfly. Former Commonwealth Games swimmer Moss Burmester told Morning Report it was clear Clareburt wasn't happy with the result, but he had done well at the games. [audio_play] "He had a phenomenal meet, and I think he should be very happy with that." In other medals overnight, Kody Andrews came away with silver in the men's Judo over 100 kilo final, and fellow judoka athletes Moira Koster and Sydnee Andrews both won bronze in their weight classes.

One of New Zealand's mountain biking medal hopes, Anton Cooper, has had to withdraw after testing positive for Covid-19. Cooper has two Commonwealth medals to his name already - a Gold at the 2014 Glasgow Games, and Silver on the Gold Coast in 2018. The New Zealand chef de mission, Nigel Avery, says Cooper is gutted to have to pull out. Avery says overall though, there has been a really positive atmosphere amongst the New Zealand team in the athlete villages.

Anton burst onto the mountain bike scene as a 17 year old kid when he was still in school. Since then he has gone from strength to strength. Anton has done so much in his 10 year career so far - winning the commonwealth games gold in Glasgow, competing in the Olympics in Tokyo and of course winning races around the world on the UCI world circuit. This is a great behind the scenes look into what it takes to be one of the best mountain bikers on the planet. I'm looking forward to seeing what's next for this guy in the future! Thanks for jumping on Anton! Shoutout to the sponsors of this podcast ORA CBD and Innerbloom cold brew coffee.

All the action from the second day of the Tokyo Olympics that you may have missed late last night.Stunning swim17-year-old Erika Fairweather last night swam the race of her young life in the 400m freestyle heats in Tokyo, qualifying with the fourth-fastest time for this afternoon's Olympic final.Fairweather set a new national record with a rapid effort from lane eight at the Olympic Aquatics Centre, stopping the clock at 4:02.28 to best the previous mark set by Lauren Boyle at London 2012 by more than a second.Late thrillerThe Black Sticks men got their Olympic campaign right back on track, edging a seven-goal thriller against Spain.Jacob Smith's goal three minutes from fulltime proved the winner in an action-packed encounter in Tokyo, helping New Zealand to a 4-3 victory.Wouda, Shoulda, CouldaThe Oly Whites suffered a bitter – and slightly bizarre – defeat to Honduras, leading for most of the match but ultimately going down 3-2.The New Zealand side had the game under control with less than 15 minutes to play, before conceding two late goals. It was a genuine heartbreaker, as the Kiwis had scored two goals of the highest quality – including a 30 metre stunner by Liberato Cacace – but gave up three soft ones.Goalkeeper Michael Woud had a game to forget, with a portion of the blame for all three goals conceded.Tennis duo advanceKiwis tennis players Michael Venus and Marcus Daniell have progressed to the second round of the doubles event in Tokyo, after a comfortable win over a Belarus combination. The New Zealanders progressed 6-3 7-6 (8-6), wrapping the match up in 77 minutes. It probably should have been over quicker, but Venus and Daniell failed to convert any of their six break point opportunities in the second set.Streak snappedA 25-game Olympic winning streak for the Team U.S.A is over, ending Sunday when France closed the game on a 16-2 run to beat the Americans 83-76. Evan Fournier's 3-pointer off a broken play with just under a minute left put France ahead for good, as the Americans simply fell apart in the final minutes. The Americans lost for only the sixth time in 144 games at the Olympics all-time, and fell to 53-4 in the Olympics with NBA players on the roster.Medal watchNew Zealand is still without a medal. Boooo.China leads the way with six gold and 11 medals in total. Hosts Japan sit second with five gold and a silver.Coming upFairweather races in the 400m freestyle final. Other Kiwis with a chance of claiming a medal today include triathletes Hayden Wilde and Tayler Reid, with Wilde an outside hope of a medal, ranked 10th in the world.Mountain biker Anton Cooper will be looking to cause an upset in his medal race, with the $67-1 outsider hoping to upset all-around superstars Mathieu van der Poel and Tom Pidcock in the cross country mountain bike event. Given what happened in yesterday's women's road race, where a $500-1 amateur won, anything is possible…Other notable Kiwis to watch include surfers Ella Williams and Billy Stairmand, who have tough round of 16 contests today – weather permitting – after doing well to progress through the heats yesterday.Listen to Tokyo in 20 podcast, the new daily podcast from Newstalk ZB, looking back at the day's action from Tokyo 2020 and previewing what's coming up for our Kiwi athletes.Newstalk ZB - Official Radio Broadcast Partner of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020.

Anton Cooper is a fixture of the World Cup cross country scene. He won the U23 World Championships in 2015 and the 2014 Commonwealth Games, but perhaps his best known finish came in 2018, when he battled World Champion Nino Schurter for the top step of the podium in a sprint finish at Nove Mesto. In this interview, he talks about all the things that went right that day, and what he would have done differently to snag that final victory. He talks about why the pro field might be changing in the coming years, and what to expect from the other riders. He also discusses his love for bike packing adventures that take him far into the wildest parts of New Zealand and sometimes involve rock climbing and helicopter rescues. His adventures with his dad have led to some harrowing stories of survival in the wilderness and few near death experiences. In contrast, he talks about the way World Cup courses have changed over the past few years to accommodate spectators and media, and what he hopes to see in the future.

For this episode, I had the pleasure of talking to professional Cross Country mountain biker Anton Cooper from New Zealand. At only 23 years of age, he has already set out to conquer the biking world by winning both the Junior and U23 World Championships, being the youngest winner of an U23 world cup of all time, and winning the Commonwealth Games 2014. After missing the Olympics 2016 due to chronic fatigue, he came back stronger than ever and in his latest world cup, placed second in the elite race by only an inch behind the current Olympic Champion. He now has his sights set on becoming the world's best biker and winning Olympic Gold at Tokyo 2020. Connect with Anton: Blog Facebook

So, it’s about time that more of us put our big girl and boy pants on got over ourselves. The offence taking industry is in full swingIsrael Falau.  Who cares what a boofhead rugby player thinks will happen to gays?Raelene Castle did, and I suppose that’s her right.  But it’s not her right to try and force Israel to change his worldview.Alan Jones has come out today and talked about freedom of speech being under threat and he’s not wrong.  But then again, in the same article he gets all upset because Qantas is threatening to pull its sponsorship.  Grow up Alan, it’s their money that can do what they want.  You can’t protect Folau’s freedom then attack Qantas’sThen there was gold medal winner Sam Gaze who took offence that silver medal-winning mate Anton Cooper didn’t wait for him to pump his tyre up. I thought it was hilarious, not offensive, and I understood that a hyped up man boy at the end of the race was letting his adrenaline get to him. But the world piled in and called him our most ungracious winner ever.  Sam then apologised. The only one who came out of the whole thing well was Anton Cooper who was grown up enough to stay schtum. And finally, Taika Waititi calling New Zealand racist as.  Well. of course we are.  I’ve lived all over the world and every community I’ve ever lived in has a little bit of racism in it. But Mark Richardson and Duncan Garner took offence.  Then their broadcasting bosses took offence and ordered them to stop talking about it. Again it was only Amanda Gillies who just rolled her eyes at the whole thing that got it right.I’ve said it many times before.  The people who take offence at people who are offended are just as offensive as the offended in the first place. It’s like we’ve all become snowflakes - all of us, lefties, righties, liberals, conservatives! And if there’s one thing worse than an offended liberal snowflake it’s an outraged conservative snowflake who gets their knickers in a knot over freedom of speech.Because what their really saying is - I'm free to speak, but I really wish you weren't.
