Most of our listeners are likely aware of your Art Gallery, Fiddlehead Gallery, but overall the store provides so much more to our community. What is The Silver Fern? Before we get too far in the episode, I want to ask you about acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine, because I feel like it might be the missing thread to weaving this story together. How did you become an acupuncturist? What is acupuncture? When people hear tea in the south they're usually not thinking about herbal medicine. They're thinking about a syrup concoction for McDonald's. How is tea from an apothecary different from a good cup of Liptons Sweet Tea?Find out more about The Silver Fern:https://thesilverfernshop.com/Better Together with Kosta Yepifantsev is a product of Morgan Franklin Media and recorded in Cookeville, TN.This episode of Better Together with Kosta Yepifantsev is made possible by our partners at Aspire Barber and Beauty Academy.Find out more about Aspire Barber and Beauty Academy:https://aspirebarberandbeauty.com
The ANZ Premiership is reaching the halfway point and some selections in the match between the Northern Stars and the Waikato Bay of Plenty Magic raised some eyebrows. Casey Kopua and Leana de Bruin were both featured in the match - both former Silver Ferns and both stars of the game, however, they are 40 and 48 years old respectively. This raises questions around why we aren't bringing through fresh young talent into the ANZ Premiership - and who will grow to be the next stars of Netball for New Zealand. Debbie Christian is an executive at the New Zealand Netball Players Association, and she joined D'Arcy to discuss. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

A to Z of Aotearoa is our regular segment where we choose topics that represent an iconic person, place or thing. This week we've arrived at 'S', and our focus is the now internationally recognised symbol of New Zealand, the Silver Fern. Jesse chats to Leon Perrie, curator of botany at Te Papa and co-author of the 'Identification Guide to the Ferns and Lycophytes of Aotearoa New Zealand' and designer Ben Clark (Ben is the son of Dave Clark, the designer of the first official All Blacks logo).
Hands up—who knew the ANZ Premiership starts tomorrow? This is netball. I'm guessing not many hands went up, which is a worry. It's somewhat forgivable, given the state of netball's head office at the moment. It doesn't have a permanent CEO, and the chair and several board members have recently resigned. So you can understand why things are a bit of a mess and the communication strategy isn't quite working. But it's also not forgivable, because this is a pivotal season for netball. This season has to work. It probably won't, but it at least needs the best possible chance, because professional netball in this country is fighting for its life. There's no broadcast deal this year. Sky pulled out at the end of last year, so netball has had to pay TVNZ just to get it on TV2. That means there's no money coming in from Sky, and players have had to take a 20% pay cut—those who are still here, anyway. Nine Silver Ferns have already moved to the Australian competition, where they earn double what they do here. And that will keep happening unless the local competition can start generating revenue again and paying players properly. So you can see how important it is that this season gets things moving in the right direction. It seems netball bosses are pinning their hopes on free-to-air TV being the game changer. Before, you had to pay to watch; now you can watch for free on TV2. The idea is you might fall in love with it again, start watching regularly, maybe even go to matches—and before long, netball secures another deal with Sky. But will you watch it again? Will you love it again when nine Silver Ferns are already gone, and the competition isn't as strong as it was last year—when you probably weren't watching anyway? Probably not. And the fact that neither of us even knew the season was about to start is probably not a good omen. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

One person helping lead the charge is Silver Ferns legend Irene van Dyk, who is an ambassador for the series and will be taking part in multiple events this year. She joined Matt and Tyler to talk about her passion for trail running and why this series could be the perfect entry point for so many people. Outgoing Netball New Zealand chair Matt Whineray regrets the way they communicated with the public during the drawn out Silver Ferns coaching saga. Whineray is ending his eight-year tenure alongside three others at board level. The governing body came under scrutiny last year for their handling of the standing down, and eventual re-instatement, of Dame Noeline Taurua. Whineray told Mike Hosking they had the right intentions. He says they were trying to balance the obligations they have with the need to keep people informed, but they know their communication could be better. Dame Noeline Taurua gives her first interview since the saga began Dame Noeline Taurua has broken her silence, following her suspension and reinstatement as Silver Ferns coach. The 57-year-old and her coaching team were stood down in September after player concerns emerged from a Sydney training camp. Interim coach Yvette McCausland-Durie is leading the team on next week's Northern Tour. Speaking to Newstalk ZB's Mike Hosking in her first interview since the saga, Taurua says the suspension was horrific, and she feels partly vindicated, but not fully back in the job. She says her happy place is on court, training with the players, so there's still a bit to go until she's really back. New Zealand's most scrutinised sports administrator of 2025 has resigned with immediate effect. Netball New Zealand chief executive Jennie Wyllie has been in the spotlight over the drawn-out Dame Noeline Taurua saga - where the Silver Ferns coach was temporarily suspended for high performance environment issues. Former Silver Fern Marg Foster says this is an opportune time for the sporting body to have a proper reset. "Over in Australia, with what they did with Netball Australia - they went through this situation and they've got the most amazing Liz Ellis running the show with her board and they're just flying. They are accelerating at huge rates, which is incredible." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A quick Christmas message to all the PR people advising sports people and sporting organisations - could you please start talking? The less you talk, the dodgier you look. Stop hiding your CEOS and board chairs under bushes in the hope scandals and poor decisions will be overlooked and forgotten and swept under the carpet. Because if 2025 has taught us anything, it's that they won't and they don't. Jennie Wyllie is gone from Netball NZ. No surprises there. There'll be no surprises either when half the board follows her out the door. They'll be lining that up as we speak with announcements to come soon, I would've thought. But, like cricket, we've got the top dog at a top sporting body disappearing before Christmas without a once-over in the press from their higher-ups. Because Matt Whineray is not fronting this. He's clearly on holiday somewhere. In the world of American football right now, much is being made of Travis Kelce's media management. He refused to do interviews post-match because they lost. Yes that's TayTay's boyfriend, and yes that's the Kansas City Chiefs. They've won a couple of Super Bowls recently. Now they're not even going to make the playoffs. So he's upset, obviously, and doesn't wanna talk to pesky journos. And I get that. I understand that. They're athletes, they're emotional, they're up and down like a yo-yo. But when something goes down in the business of sport, in my view - you should front it in the same way as a regular company CEO or a politician would. The fans are the voters, the shareholders. And they deserve some respect. Respect is shown through communication and right now, they're getting the corporate equivalent of the middle finger. And all of this is made worse by the fact that this is what got them into this mess to begin with with Dame Noels. They didn't front. When they did, they didn't say anything. And then the mood reached fever pitch, almost every single Silver Fern who'd ever donned a bib came out and had their say, even the Government stepped in. Then, finally, things changed. One of the reasons I love netball as a sport is because of the straight-up, hard-as-nails personalities that tend to dominate it. They're no nonsense and they're straight up the guts. Management ought to take a leaf out of their book. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
