Most triathlon training focuses on physiology and skills. Dr. David Spindler argues that the brain is the missing piece, and that you can (and should) train your brain to better process pressure, adapt under stress, and execute under fatigue. This episode will teach you how to do this. Dr. David Spindler is a neuroscientist and cognitive performance specialists who has worked with athletes at the very highest level (including with Sir Mark Cavendish, Sam Laidlow, Chelsea Sodaro, Katie Courtney, and Tom Evans) and across sports from cycling, triathlon and trail running through soccer and Formula 1. HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS: The brain's central role in athletic performance: coordination, decision-making, focus, emotional regulation, fatigue perception, and recovery. Allostatic load: why amateur triathletes carry far more cognitive stress than professionals, and how to account for it in training. How the brain controls pacing, and why perceived effort rises and the efficiency of firing muscles drops when the brain decides an effort isn't sustainable. Self-efficacy vs. confidence: why they are different, and how to address a lack of self-efficacy as a triathlete. Self-regulation: why understanding how your brain and body behave under stress matters, and how poor self-regulation undermines both triathlon training and the athlete-coach relationship. Joy and happiness as recovery tools: why they are the most effective mediators of cortisol, and how to find joy and happiness in training and life (it's not the same as dopamine hits) DETAILED EPISODE SHOWNOTES: We have detailed shownotes for all of our episodes. The shownotes are basically the podcast episode in written form, that you can read in 5-10 minutes. They are not transcriptions, but they are also not just surface-level overviews. In this special edition of Pod of Gold, NDI columnist Tom Noie and Irish beat writer Mike Berardino and WNDU sports coordinator Jackson Neill stray from the usual pod script. The three preview Stanford (a little bit) and touch on the Notre Dame football news of the week (injuries, depth chart, Georgia Tech kick time, etc.) before welcoming former NFL defensive lineman Marc Spindler, the father of Irish offensive guard Rocco Spindler, for a special conversation. Marc Spindler touches on his role as a father to a college football player, what college football player looks like now (he doesn't recognize it), his son's touching promise to his Marc's father (Rocco's grandfather) and what his son attending Notre Dame means to him every time Marc Spindler steps on campus. We asked Marc Spindler for 15 minutes, but talked with him for 30. It could've gone 90. The pod closes with each reporter offering one hot take and one prediction for Saturday's game.
Escuchar audio

Which are you more concerned about right now: Notre Dame losing to Navy in the season opener or a sea of red inside Notre Dame Stadium when Ohio State visits on September 23rd? That's what we start today's show discussing. Other topics include: * Fan Duel Over/Unders for Sam Hartman this season are 26.5 touchdown passes and 2,950.5 passing yards. Will he go over or under? * USC's Caleb Williams has an over/under of 3,450.5 and Drake Maye of North Carolina has an over/under of 3,000.5 yards. Who are we more confident to go over? * Maye also has a touchdown pass over/under of 27.5...which means his TD total is only one more than Sam Hartman and his yardage total is only 50 more yards than Hartman and they both have +1800 Heisman odds...yet Maye is considered the No. 2 QB prospect in next year's draft and Hartman is an afterthought. What do we make of that? * Interesting chart we saw on Twitter...last season 44% of Notre Dame's receiving yards were made BEFORE the catch...while 71% of Wake Forest's yards were before the catch. What do you think it means? * Fill-in the blank...There are 50 days to go until the Irish and Navy open the season in Dublin. Rocco Spindler wears No. 50 and this season is BLANK for Spindler. * In the wake of several NFL players being suspended for inappropriate gambling a fairly prominent NFL pundit says players should be allowed to bet on their team to win. I won't tell you who the guy is to avoid prejudicing you. But do you Buy or Sell players being allowed to put a wager on their team to win a game and nothing else? * Joey Chestnut has won eight straight hot dog eating contests. Who's the all-time equivalent of Chestnut in each sport (players not coaches)? * Here's what Eagles QB Jalen Hurts had to say about Dak Prescott: “He's a hell of an athlete. A great leader of men on and off the field. It's really the media who wants to paint him as a villain. I model my game off him, what he's doing is special, by far the best QB in the NFC. Arguably a top 5 QB now.” Our thoughts on Hurts saying the media paints Prescott as a villain.
