In this episode, I sit down with Raelene Castle, a trailblazer in sports management as the first female CEO of Netball New Zealand and now the CEO of Sport New Zealand and High Performance Sport New Zealand. We discuss her trajectory in the corporate and sporting worlds, her upbringing in a sport-centric family, and the importance for her of finding confidence through activity. Raelene shares her insights on the challenges women in leadership face - including the (elusive) balance of personal and professional life. She is not afraid to talk about the losses and well as the wins - as we delve into managing alopecia in a public role, responding to life not going to plan, and the profound significance of family connections. Our conversation touches upon mentorship, reverse-mentorship, inclusivity, and explores how young people can assert their voices and ambitions in today's world. Raelene is nothing short of inspiring, and I truly loved talking with her. I'm also joined by Tracy Hemingway (aka Debt Free Diva) thanks to Generate for a sponsored chat about how KiwiSaver can be an absolute game changer. Kia ora e hoa mā! I'm Petra Bagust and Grey Areas is back for season 7, and I have to say I'm so excited for this season. You know how sometimes you just have a good feeling about things? And look, something I've learned from our conversations is that life rarely fits into tidy boxes. It spills over the edges, it surprises us, it challenges what we thought we knew, and that's where most of the interesting kōrero happens - at the edges, down a rabbit hole, on a tangent in the 'grey areas'. And so this season, we explore more of those spaces with guests who bring music, wisdom, science, and lived experience to the table. Let me tempt you with some of our guests this season. I sit down with the extraordinary Nadia Reid. She's a singer-songwriter whose music speaks to the heart in ways that words alone never could. Sports leader Raelene Castle, who talks about high pressure leadership at times being the woman in a man's world, while dealing with very real personal challenges and still nailing it. And renowned nutritionist, Doctor Libby Weaver, who is helping reshape the way we think about nurturing our bodies and minds in a world that's constantly changing - at a time when, let's face it, we are constantly changing. We also connect with two of Aotearoa's most celebrated actors, Michael Hurst and Jennifer Ward-Leaand, as they open up about their latest stage production, a raw personal look at the realities of dementia. And we widen the lens with Dame Anne Salmond, an academic and thinker whose work challenges us to see our place in the world and in history with fresh eyes. I tackle the hot button topic of ADHD which I realise is both compelling and repelling, but this season, it's personal. There is, let's face it, no right or wrong way to navigate life's grey areas, but there is something powerful in sitting with the questions, hearing different perspectives, soaking up ideas and holding space for the messy, beautiful in between, because those can be the spaces where we begin to find our way. Join me for season 7 of Grey Areas. I can't wait to share it with you. New episodes drop every week from Thursday, March 6th, and please follow the show wherever you get your favourite podcasts, so that you'll never miss an episode. Ka kite ano, see you soon. After Ox failed us last week by not delivering Rob Mills to the studio, this week is his chance to redeem himself and bring Millsy in. We were disappointed last week, but we're very excited to have Millsy in this week. That aside - Ox has done his other homework, which was to find out what Tofu is made of. Which he does. It sounds awful. We also find out about the night that Marko spent in prison - never knew we had a hardened criminal on the podcast, but apparently we do. Still on prison, Ox and Marko tell a hilarious story about Hawthorn Hawks players Jason Dunstall, Gary Buckenara and Gary Ayres ended up in prison in Hawaii - and Hawks coach Allan Jeans response was brilliant!Ox raises an issue that has been worrying him: things you won't ever do. Ox refuses to have takeaway delivered, he'll only ever pick up. The boys move into a tipping discussion, and it gets heated - to tip or not! And what about tipping before the meal arrives?Ox also reveals that he has a disease, it's called epistolophobia. He explains on the pod.Controversially, Ox and Marko believe that anyone who owns a battery-powered lawnmower is not masculine. Debatable.Ox has a new business idea this week - this one to do with tattoos. He loves the idea. It's awful. But he loves it.The boys tell a great story about being in Las Vegas at Hooters restaurant when John Daly's RV was smashed into - Daly's wife went ballistic, and Ox filmed it. We play some of the audio on the show. It's hilarious (language warning). We've had some feedback from a Couple of Blokes, Couple of Beers family member who loves the show, but doesn't drink beer, and reckons we need more wine chat on the show. Homework is set. Marko has promised that he'll get Ricky Ponting on the show in the next week or two. Can't wait!Ox raises sports that he thinks are over-rated, and sports that he reckons are under-rated and should be pumped up more. More homework is set, Ox wants us to get squash superstar Heather Mackay on the show, and the boys decide that they want to record commentary of a lawn bowls game. And Ox and Marko may have defamed Raelene Castle, former Rugby & Netball honcho.Sadly, the joke returns. Miskimmin announced his departure in August.Castle will take over just eight months after a messy break-up with Rugby Australia, leaving after she was told she no longer had the support of the RA board. Her time in charge of the troubled organisation was marred by former Wallaby star Israel Folau's series of homophobic social media posts and the failure to secure a broadcasting deal.Listen to Castle talk with D'Arcy Waldegrave above

My guest for this episode is someone I’ve looked up to for many years. Raelene Castle is one of Australia’s leading sports executives, having spent the past decade and a bit as CEO of three major organisations – Netball New Zealand, NRL team the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs, and most recently Rugby Australia. Prior to that she climbed the corporate ladder at major NZ companies, and in 2015 she was appointed an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to business and sport. Relentlessly committed to living according to her values regardless of the personal cost, Raelene has weathered her fair share of controversy, a recent example being the sacking of Israel Folau in 2019, while she was CEO of Rugby Australia. Being a successful woman in a male-dominated field has made Raelene an inspiration to many young women, but she has also refused to make gender an issue throughout her career. She brings a clarity and vision to everything she does and is not easily distracted by naysayers and trolls. Tune in to hear us talk about everything from business leadership and hair loss to her little-known achievements in lawn bowls! Phil Waugh was able to follow a clear pathway from being a ballboy and then playing for the Warringah Rats to eventually joining the Wallabies. These days the connection between community and professional rugby aren't as clear. In today's episode, we talk with Phil about the importance of grassroots rugby and we ask Phil, a non-executive director for Rugby Australia, for insights on where the organisation is headed. Phil discusses the challenges that Rugby Australia is facing and how it's leaving stormy waters and shifting its attention from addressing controversy and back onto the game. Reflecting on the tenure of ex-Rugby Australia CEO, Raelene Castle, Phil provides an optimistic view on why the community was so polarized — it shows how much Australians care about the game. After chatting about what Phil is looking for in a new Rugby Australia CEO, we look at the struggles that they will need to overcome. Mirroring the conversations that we've had in our previous episodes, Phil agrees that investing in grassroots rugby should be Rugby Australia's number one priority. Phil then provides his take on why the 2027 World Cup bid is so important for community rugby before explaining why making domestic rugby the best in the world will solve all of Australian rugby's financial woes. Tune in to hear more of Phil's insider perspectives on the world of rugby! Key Points From This Episode: How important club and school rugby was to Phil's childhood. The need to connect community rugby back to professional rugby.Unblurring the lines when having young players represent their community.  Phil's experience working within Rugby Australia and the challenges they've faced. How the polarized reactions to Raelene Castle's tenure shows how much people care about the game. What rugby is to Phil; “our game is about community.”What Phil is looking for in a new Rugby Australia CEO and why the job is so difficult. Hear how far along Rugby Australia is in appointing a new CEO.Why investing in grassroots rugby is Rugby Australia's number one priority.      What Rugby Australia's mission should be regarding the sport. Questions around if investing in the 2027 World Cup bid is a reasonable use of funds. How to keep players happy, remunerated, and playing in Australia. Why increasing the calibre of Australian rugby will bring money back to the sport. How discussions with broadcasters have been progressing. What Phil would do if he were appointed CEO of Rugby Australia.Links Mentioned in Today's Episode:Phil Waugh LinkedInNarrabeen TigersWarringah RatsThe Shore School

Deposed Rugby Australia boss Raelene Castle was subjected to a death threat and bullying, according to the latest report on the rugby fiasco across the Tasman.Acting Rugby Australia chairman Paul McLean has described some of the public criticism she faced over the Israel Folau affair as bullying in a Sun-Herald report.It also claimed security measures were beefed up after Castle received a social media death threat from a supporter of Folau, the star Wallaby who incited a long controversy with two anti-gay posts which led to his bitter break up with the game. The alleged death threat came around the time of Folau's three-day code of conduct hearing last May.The Sun-Herald says security was increased at RA's headquarters at Moore Park, where staff were told not to prop lower level doors open. Castle's Sydney home was given a security review."She was subjected to vitriol on social media as well as public criticism for a number of different reasons on a scale that few Australian sporting administrators have had to endure," the Sun-Herald reported.New Zealander Castle quit last week, after two-and-a-half years in charge, after it turned out she did not have her board's total support.McLean said: "I'm not a social media person, but I'm aware of some of the things that were said over a period of time in a quite vicious and vitriolic way."It's the silent forces, the dark forces, they're the things that upset me most."It's the people who didn't know the facts or were just one of those faceless people out there - that was the damaging thing form her perspective."She shared some of that with me, which I found quite abhorrent."One of my greatest concerns with her was her welfare and how she was on a daily basis. A lesser person would have thrown the towel in ages ago, quite simply."One of Raelene Castle's fiercest critics, former Wallabies coach turned broadcaster Alan Jones, was scathing of her performance but also said her exit as Rugby Australia CEO doesn't solve anything because the RA board is equally to blame for the sad state of rugby in Australia. On his 2GB radio show on Friday morning, Jones ripped into Castle for a string of poor decisions but also called for a cleanout of RA chairman Paul McLean and the rest of the board, who signed off on the CEO's calls."This solves absolutely nothing. I have said all along it's easy to throw Raelene Castle under the bus," Jones said."I can't imagine anything she has done, whether it's the bloated expenditure, the ridiculous growth in staff of over 150, the foolish, personal and spiteful attack on Israel Folau, the hopeless performances off the paddock and on the paddock. All of these things have been endorsed by the board."Now the board have told Raelene Castle, 'You must go, we need clear air'. You won't get clear air with the departure of Raelene Castle. The whole kit and caboodle have to go, that's what the Wallaby captains (who sent RA a letter this week demanding a change in leadership) wrote about."And that's the only way sponsors will return, the public will return, it's the only way credibility can be regained."I've no doubt Raelene Castle did her best. It's an appointment that shouldn't have been made. She knows nothing about the game. It's like putting someone to become the first violinist in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra who can't read music."Paul McLean is the acting chairman. He's been present for every one of the decisions that Raelene Castle made, every one of them, and so have the bulk of the board."Jones also denied the attacks on Castle had anything to do with her gender."It is insulting to say this is a matter of gender," Jones said. "It's got nothing to do with Raelene Castle being a woman. It is totally related to the results and the effectiveness of the performance."New Zealand Rugby also weighed in on Castle's resignation, though was much more positive than Jones, releasing a statement that praised her "unselfish" decision."New Zealand Ru...

The lockdown luvvies want us to continue to be locked in our homes and schools shut despite domestic coronavirus containment. But they still want prisons, detention centres and borders open when it was international people movement that spread the virus.  To break down the philosophy and end goals behind these contradictory lockdown advocates is the Thursday Uncuckables Team:  Tim Wilms Editor in Chief of The Unshackled, David Hiscox Editor of The XYZ and James Fox Higgins Director of Rational Rise TV.  We started with some breaking news that Raelene Castle the CEO of Rugby Australia who sacked Isreal Folau has resigned. She joins NRL CEO Todd Greenberg in being a woke sporting administrator brought down by the coronavirus. The far-left have learned to love the lockdown since it is causing as much economic damage as they aimed to achieve with climate alarmism. Though they are still triggered that the far-right are using the coronavirus pandemic to say 'I told you so' as this virus was able to spread thanks to globalism and open borders. They are also continuing to decry "racism" against Asian-Australians. New Zealand has the world's most totalitarian lockdown as they have banned the sale of fiction and other "non-essential books". Meanwhile Malcolm Turnbull's publisher is going after 59 political operatives who obtained a pirated version of his memoir. We are told the lockdown can only end if we invite the government to track our movements with the coronavirus tracing app. Meanwhile, China is now flexing its geopolitical muscle more than ever after the west has been crippled by the virus they created. Facebook and YouTube censorship have now turned treasonous in censoring content that goes against China's puppet globalist body the World Health Organisation. Coronavirus wasn't the leading story today, religion was with Catholic Cardinal George Pell released from prison with our High Court quashing his child sex conviction. Sports has become a battle of the codes to survive the pandemic shutdown.  To discuss all this on the Uncuckables panel is Tim Wilms Editor in Chief of The Unshackled, Reg Penney from NSW Patriots Against the Extreme Left and Melbourne YouTuber and patriot Johnny Moore. It is Johnny's first appearance on the Uncuckables so the show begins with him introducing himself to the audience. Reg and Johnny are both Catholics so share their thoughts on George Pell having his child sex conviction quashed 7-0 by the full bench of the High Court. Tim as an atheist reflects on how the legal institutions of Victoria allowed such as miscarriage of justice to happen? There has also been the media witchhunt against Pell by the ABC and social media throughout this legal tragedy. All Australian sports codes have been suspended during the coronavirus pandemic. Tim and Johnny being AFL fans take solace our code will survive. Reg is an NRL fan and its CEO Todd Greenberg has said some clubs may not survive. But Rugby Australia is doing the worst under its CEO Raelene Castle who sacked Israel Folau with the code facing a $120 million revenue shortfall. The fight against the coronavirus is still the biggest global story. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is in intensive care a week after being diagnosed with the coronavirus. Anger with China is growing for creating the virus with now US politicians joining those in Australia calling for China to be forced to pay reparations and compensation to the rest of the world. Australia is flattening the curve with daily infections continuing to decrease. This now has many wondering how long must we be subjected to these draconian lockdown measures with local police randomly pulling people over outside their home demanding to know their business, and fining them if they deem them to be engaging in non-essential travel. Israel Folau has copped a barrage of criticism after the Wallabies star doubled down on his anti-gay stance with a controversial Instagram post last night. The 30-year-old was slammed for calling on "drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists and idolaters" to repent for their sins or else "hell awaits" them.In a caption, Folau added: "Those that are living in Sin will end up in Hell unless you repent. Jesus Christ loves you and is giving you time to turn away from your sin and come to him."Wallabies players Samu Kerevi and Allan Alaalatoa have liked Folau's post.Folau has a history of making controversial, homophobic comments and his latest effort sparked a passionate backlash as Rugby Australia said its integrity unit will launch an investigation.Major Wallabies sponsor Qantas, who threatened to pull its sponsorship last year following a series of provocative posts from Folau, hit out over the Waratahs flyer's post."These comments are really disappointing and clearly don't reflect the spirit of inclusion and diversity that we support," a Qantas statement to AAP said."We are pleased to see Rugby Australia's condemnation of the comments and will await the outcome of their review."Former Wallaby Jeremy Paul understands Folau has certain beliefs, but can't comprehend why he feels the need to express them in this matter on social media."You can't bring the game into disrepute," Paul said on Fox Sports program Bill & Boz. "You can't … go out and do stupid things on social media."I just want to ask the question, what do you want to get out of it? We all know Israel, what his beliefs are and we all understand he's very religious but I just don't understand (why he needs to post this content)."What do you get out of it?"I know he's a lovely guy but I just ask the question why?"In a statement, Rugby Australia condemned Folau's latest comments as "unacceptable" and "disrespectful", saying the content of his Instagram post "does not represent the values of the sport and is disrespectful to members of the rugby community".Folau was widely criticised on social media for his 'disgraceful' comments. But there's more than just an argument about religion and lifestyle at stake with Folau's scandal. His Wallabies career is now uncertain just five months out from the Rugby World Cup.Folau had already tested the patience of RA boss Raelene Castle with a series of homophobic posts last year, most notably one that said "God's plan" for gay people was "HELL".The three-times John Eales medallist was warned but not sanctioned by Castle after defiantly threatening to walk away from the game if his strong Christian beliefs were compromised. It is barely two months since Folau signed a new multimillion-dollar contract extension to remain with the NSW Waratahs until the end of 2022. It was not specified if the deal with the Waratahs and Rugby Australia, which strongly promotes inclusion, has a clause restricting Folau from making provocative social media posts, but earlier this year the Sydney Morning Herald reported there were "beefed up social media protocols" Folau would need to adhere to.If he's found to have breached his contract, there's a chance Folau could be sacked. The latest episode in the saga is the last thing Wallabies coach Michael Cheika needs from his premier back in a World Cup year. Champion flanker David Pocock is already under a huge World Cup fitness cloud having played minimal Super Rugby this year as he battles a career-threatening neck injury. On top of that, having RA tear up Folau's contract five months out from the global showpiece and leaving the Wallabies with the grim prospect of being without their two best players in Japan would leave Cheika's plans in tatters. But that's now a real possibility after the Wallabies' biggest sponsors, Qantas and Asics, threatened to walk away last year before Folau was first hauled over the coals.

So, it’s about time that more of us put our big girl and boy pants on got over ourselves. The offence taking industry is in full swingIsrael Falau.  Who cares what a boofhead rugby player thinks will happen to gays?Raelene Castle did, and I suppose that’s her right.  But it’s not her right to try and force Israel to change his worldview.Alan Jones has come out today and talked about freedom of speech being under threat and he’s not wrong.  But then again, in the same article he gets all upset because Qantas is threatening to pull its sponsorship.  Grow up Alan, it’s their money that can do what they want.  You can’t protect Folau’s freedom then attack Qantas’sThen there was gold medal winner Sam Gaze who took offence that silver medal-winning mate Anton Cooper didn’t wait for him to pump his tyre up. I thought it was hilarious, not offensive, and I understood that a hyped up man boy at the end of the race was letting his adrenaline get to him. But the world piled in and called him our most ungracious winner ever.  Sam then apologised. The only one who came out of the whole thing well was Anton Cooper who was grown up enough to stay schtum. And finally, Taika Waititi calling New Zealand racist as.  Well. of course we are.  I’ve lived all over the world and every community I’ve ever lived in has a little bit of racism in it. But Mark Richardson and Duncan Garner took offence.  Then their broadcasting bosses took offence and ordered them to stop talking about it. Again it was only Amanda Gillies who just rolled her eyes at the whole thing that got it right.I’ve said it many times before.  The people who take offence at people who are offended are just as offensive as the offended in the first place. It’s like we’ve all become snowflakes - all of us, lefties, righties, liberals, conservatives! And if there’s one thing worse than an offended liberal snowflake it’s an outraged conservative snowflake who gets their knickers in a knot over freedom of speech.Because what their really saying is - I'm free to speak, but I really wish you weren't.
