Episode 149 - The Keegan Episode   What up party people. I mentioned this on the show but I gotta hand it to my boys Tyler and DJ for holding down the fort last week while the rest of us bums skipped town for other things. We were all a little nervous about how it would go because in the 3 years we've been doing this thing, I think that was the first time we've ever only had two of us on the air but hey, I gotta say, it went absolutely swimmingly. Speaking of swimmingly, if you came here this week expecting more of those seamless transitions and on-topic discussions without interruptions well you're in for a rude awakening because with all five of us back in the studio you know this week was anything but.    So if you find yourself mid episode with glazed over eyes and ears, just mosey your way over to one of our partner pages and indulge in some misery shopping to bring your spirits back to life. You've got all the options over at Bike Tires Direct (code “bonkbros” for 10% off - https://www.biketiresdirect.com/?utm_source=bonkbros&utm_medium=banner&utm_campaign=bonkbros2025).  Or if you need some marginal gains to tickle your fancy then head over to Silca to meet all your wax and wash needs (code “Bonkbrosgravelseason” for 10% off - https://silca.cc/?utm_source=Bonk+Bros&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=stripchip&utm_id=Bonk+Bros+Podcast). You can even check out their latest product drop, the pocket compressor, although they only had a limited quantity available for domestic purchase so if you're Stateside it may just be window drooling for you by now.   Oh yeah, can't forget about the endless energy and recovery supplies from our homies at KetoneAid. If you want the full experience, pick up that Ketone heavy, or if you want more of a session Ketone then opt for the lights. Use the affiliate link in the show notes for free shipping. Two days before Emilly Johnston won the Argentario instalment of the Internazionali d'Italia Series, she chatted about all the new changes that have occurred in the past seven months. As the 2024 mountain bike world championships began at the end of this past August, Johnston signed with the team she'd race with in 2025, Scott-SRAM MTB Racing, the squad of Nino Schurter and Filippo Colombo. The two-year contract came just as the rider from Vancouver Island's Comox Valley was nearing the end of her final under-23 season. Her first year in the elite level would truly be with the elites of the sport.Johnston covers a wide range of topics In this in-depth interview. How had the geography of her home region shaped her as a rider? Why did she do a cool trick in a high-stakes race? Does she tie her own flies for fishing? Johnston talks about some of the people who've had a big effect on her career, including an innovative bike builder on Quadra Island. She shares her insights about the current state of Canadian women's cross country mountain biking and how, in a sense, she has two lives: a European one and a Comox Valley one. Also in this episode of the Canadian Cycling Magazine Podcast, editor Matthew Pioro and writer Jake Williams chat about recent races. Milan-San Remo, men's and women's, were stunning events. XC racers had many successes in the UC Cup races in Fayetteville, Ark. Gent-Wevelgem is coming up. It's a race that Williams, a Luca Paolini doppelganger, has a particular fondness for.For more on one of Johnston's cycling influences, head to the podcast's back catalogue. In August 2020, two-time world champion Catharine Pendrel was featured. The episode, quite rightly, is titled “Catharine Pendrel is awesome.” Check it out.

In episode 100, I caught up with the greatest Men's mountain biker of all time, Nino Schurter. Nino is a 10 (!!) time World Champion in the cross-country discipline and an Olympic gold medalist. At 37 years old, Nino is still a force in the sport, and the likes of Tom Pidcock and Mathieu van der Poel are trying to dethrone him in the MTB world.  In this milestone episode, I chat with Nino about how he stays motivated throughout his career to remain at the top for so long. We discuss his new competitors in Van der Poel and Pidcock and what Nino is doing to lift his game further. Nino details his off-season activities, which, surprisingly, include foiling and what he does to relax during his downtime. We speak about Red Bull's contribution to the coverage of MTB with drones and fixed cameras leading the way. Amongst many other topics, Nino and I discuss the different types of cross-country circuits and features and what the top-level riders need, to reach the podium or become a World Champion. In 2014, Sam Gaze was a privateering teenager from a rural farming town in New Zealand when he took the men's title in the opening round of an eliminator World Cup in Cairns, Australia. With this breakout ride, he caught the eye of Specialized Racing and relocated to Europe, where he went on to claim five world titles, including U23 World Champion and Elite Marathon and Short Track World Champion. He now races for UCI team Alpecin–Deceuninck where he competes in the WorldTour as well as the World Cup. Payson sat down with Sam in Girona to talk about breaking Nino Schurter's record-setting winning streak in the opening round of the 2018 World Cup, being mentored by Christoph Sauser, and how winning the World Championship in 2018 with his dad at the finish was the best day of his life. But they also discuss the low points, such as the infamous moment at the 2018 Commonwealth Games when his spur-of-the-moment reaction toward an opponent sparked a media frenzy. The experience intensified his ongoing struggle with depression and caused him to take a hiatus from cycling for much of 2019. In the end, it took medical advice and some encouragement from friend and former opponent, Mathieu van der Poel, to bring him back. Sam talks about his experience with depression, racing with Alpecin, and setting his sights on the Paris Olympics.Instagram: @theadventurestacheYouTube: Payson McElveen

If you´ve been following me over the latter part of my career, and especially over the past couple of years, you´ll have seen my progression from pure roadie to lover of gravel riding and, more recently, mountain biking. I´ve lined up in a couple of MTB races, but next week, I´ll face my biggest challenge yet, at the brutal South African MTB race, Cape Epic.   But before I head off to Cape Epic, I really wanted to learn a bit more about the history of mountain biking, and the evolution that it has gone through to get to where it is today. I wanted to educate myself, and any others out there listening, that are in the same boat as me – just starting out in the sport of mountain biking but with your head still mostly in the road game, to understand the sport from the bottom up. I wanted to start at the beginning, and I wanted to know what it was like to race the sport and learn the etiquette from the inside out.   So I turned to a few greats of the sport. For history and background, I spoke with Ned Overend, one of the early adaptors of the sport. We chatted about the backstory of MTB, and the early legends, the ones who developed the iconic bikes - The Klunkers - those beach cruisers adapted into makeshift mountain bikes, which they then started racing downhill.     Next, I wanted to learn about the beauty of mountain biking racing, and that meant I needed to speak to the best of the best, and in my mind, that is the GOAT, Nino Schurter. Nino´s been part of the evolution of the sport from its inception, so what better way to find out how the sport has changed – the racing, the bike development, the course structure, all the technical stuff.   Next, I spoke to someone who started a bit later in the sport but has been really entrenched in the professional racing side of things and that´s Haley Batten, a rider who is now just coming to the forefront of mountain biking, and Haley really helped me to understand the nuances of the sport, the unwritten rules and the etiquette.   Lastly, I wanted to speak to someone who was a roadie but had transitioned to MTB, like me. Lachie Morton, having come from the road and transitioned to MTB, understands what it´s like for someone like me who is coming across from the road and trying to understand the sport.   I´ve developed a bit of a love for this sport, and I can´t wait to get stuck into the challenge of Cape Epic. It´s happening next week, and I´m heading there with my roadie partner Ian Boswell. We will document throughout the time in South Africa at Cape Epic and bring it to you after the event, but for now, sit back and enjoy learning a bit more about the beautiful sport of mountain biking.   Cheers,   Mitch   Show notes- Intro with Ian Boswell – until 15´44 Ned Overend – 15´50 Nino Schurter – 43´30 Haley Batten – 1´08´30 Lachlan Morton – 1´25´20

Nino Schurter braucht eigentlich kein grosses Intro.

Me hizo reflexionar.
