Episode 65: Scott Sandelin. The prohockeypod was honoured to have long time NCAA D1 Head Coach Scott Sandelin come on this week. Scott is currently in his 25th season as Head Coach at Minnesota-Duluth University. A draft pick of the Montreal Canadiens, Scott played D1 hockey himself at North Dakota before embarking on a 7 year professional playing career. Scott retired at the age of 28 and jumped immediately into coaching. He went back to North Dakota University as an Assistant Coach, learning from Dean Blais and was able to win 2 National Championships in his 6 years there. He then made the jump to Head Coach at Minnesota-Duluth and his resume/record speaks for itself. 3 National Championships (2011/2018/2019), multiple NCCA tournament appearances, and Coach of the Year (03/04), just to name a few. Scott is also very proud of the fact that his athletes have the most “free agent” NHL games of any D1 school. We talked a lot about his coaching philosophies, what he has learned over the years and the types of players he likes to recruit. It was awesome to talk hockey with Scott and I am happy he had some time for me. Hope you enjoy!

The conventional thinking is it is tough to get sweeps in the NCHC on the road. Well, this past weekend was a bit of an anomaly. All three road teams swept conference series as St. Cloud State got two wins at Western Michigan, North Dakota got a sweep in Duluth and Colorado College swept Miami in Oxford, Ohio. In nonconference play last weekend, Denver put up and gave up a lot of goals (23 between the teams) in a series split at Arizona State and Nebraska Omaha got two one-goal wins over visiting Long Island. The Rink Live's Sydney Wolf and Mick Hatten review last weekend and preview the four coming NCHC series this weekend on this week's podcast. Stay tuned at the end for an interview with Minnesota Duluth head coach Scott Sandelin.

For this week's episode of the Glass and Out hockey podcast, it's our pleasure to be joined by three-time National Champion Scott Sandelin, Head Coach of the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs. The Hibbing, Minnesota native is currently in his 23rd season with the Bulldogs. In that time, he's helped them become one of the top programs in college hockey, both in terms of wins, championships and moving players onto the National Hockey League. In 2011, the Bulldogs captured their first ever National Championship by defeating the Michigan Wolverines 3-2 in overtime. Then in 2018 and 2019, UMD became just the third school in NCAA history to win back-to-back National Champions. In total, Sandelin has led the Bulldogs to six NCAA Frozen Four Tournaments, three conference playoff Championships and finished a top of their conference nine times during the regular season. In 2004, Sandelin received the Spenser Penrose Award, presented to the top coach in college hockey and has twice has been named the head coach of Team USA at the World Junior Championships. As a player, Sandelin was a member of Team USA at the 1984 World Junior Championships, named Captain of the UND Fighting Sioux in both his Junior and Senior seasons, and was selected 40th overall by the Montreal Canadians at the 1982 NHL Entry Draft. He played 25 games in the NHL over a six-year professional career, before injuries forced him into retirement. In today's conversation, we'll discuss how to create healthy competition in practice, the definition of an ‘Every-Day-Er,'and why he's content with continuing to build on the success of the UMD program.
