Jeffrey Bast is a nationally respected attorney with over 30 years of experience in insolvency and commercial litigation. He represents debtors, creditors, trustees, and business stakeholders in workouts, reorganizations, and bankruptcy-related litigation, with a strong focus on avoiding bankruptcy when possible and guiding clients through complex financial transactions and restructuring. Jeff completed two federal bankruptcy clerkships and rose to the level of equity partner at two international law firms. He brings both legal and business acumen to each matter, with deep experience in bankruptcy sales, acquisitions, and financing. Jeff is frequently invited to speak and has been consistently recognized by Chambers USA, Best Lawyers in America, Florida Super Lawyers, Martindale-Hubbell, and the South Florida Legal Guide. Brett Amron is a nationally recognized litigator with over 25 years of experience in complex business and bankruptcy litigation, representing fiduciaries, trustees, creditors, and companies in high-stakes matters. A pioneer in utilizing contingency fee structures in insolvency cases, Brett has secured tens of millions of dollars in recoveries for creditors. The firm focuses on commercial litigation, insolvency, bankruptcy, and related business disputes, representing debtors, creditors, fiduciaries, and trustees in complex matters nationwide. WHAT'S COVERED IN THIS EPISODE ABOUT BUILDING A LAW FIRM PARTNERSHIP THAT LASTS Jeff and Brett didn't know each other when they each launched solo practices in 2008. By 2009, they had formed a partnership that has now lasted 16 years. What started as two lawyers drinking from a firehose during the financial crisis became something much bigger—a thriving law firm with a national reputation. Along the way, they've built a resilient firm culture, navigated economic cycles, and adapted to a shifting legal market. Their approach to law firm leadership, talent retention, and long-term growth shows how intentional communication and shared values can sustain a partnership over decades. In this episode of The Lawyer's Edge podcast, Elise speaks with Jeff and Brett about the founding decisions that shaped their identity, how they've maintained trust and communication for more than 16 years, and what it takes to run a law firm partnership that's built to last. 3:07 - The founding values that have guided them for 16 years 8:07 - How they built trust when they barely knew each other 14:25 - The weekly communication rituals that keep them aligned 16:20 - Being open to conversations and opportunities for growth 20:00 - Learning to run a business through EO, the Entrepreneurs' Organization 22:49 - Core drivers for evaluating opportunities and staying focused 24:18 - The culture they're passionate about protecting 28:54 - Their "hire slow, fire fast" approach to talent 34:33 - Lessons about staying resilient through changing markets 39:59 - Why they still feel like they're building a startup after 16 years 43:08 - The genesis of their podcast and the Business Advantage Forum 47:53 - Brett's advice on patience and listening 48:34 - Jeff's philosophy on trust as the foundation of leadership MENTIONED IN BUILDING A LAW FIRM PARTNERSHIP THAT LASTS Bast Amron LLP The Practice Podcast Entrepreneurs' Organization (EO) Managing Partner Forum Get connected with the coaching team: hello@thelawyersedge.com The Lawyer's Edge SPONSOR FOR THIS EPISODE... Join Beth Rudden at the Artificiality Summit in Bend, Oregon—October 23-25, 2025—to imagine a meaningful life with synthetic intelligence for me, we and us. Learn more here: www.artificialityinstitute.org/summitIn this thought-provoking conversation, we explore the intersection of archaeological thinking and artificial intelligence with Beth Rudden, former IBM Distinguished Engineer and CEO of Bast AI. Beth brings a unique interdisciplinary perspective—combining her training as an archaeologist with over 20 years of enterprise AI experience—to challenge fundamental assumptions about how we build and deploy artificial intelligence systems.Beth describes her work as creating "the trust layer for civilization," arguing that current AI systems reflect what Hannah Arendt called the "banality of evil"—not malicious intent, but thoughtlessness embedded at scale. As she puts it, "AI is an excavation tool, not a villain," surfacing patterns and biases that humanity has already normalized in our data and language.Key themes we explore:Archaeological AI: How treating AI as an excavation tool reveals embedded human thoughtlessness, and why scraping random internet data fundamentally misunderstands the nature of knowledge and contextOntological Scaffolding: Beth's approach to building AI systems using formal knowledge graphs and ontologies—giving AI the scaffolding to understand context rather than relying on statistical pattern matching divorced from meaningData Sovereignty in Healthcare: A detailed exploration of Bast AI's platform for explainable healthcare AI, where patients control their data and can trace every decision back to its source—from emergency logistics to clinical communicationThe Economics of Expertise: Moving beyond the "humans as resources" paradigm to imagine economic models that compete to support and amplify human expertise rather than eliminate itEmbodied Knowledge and Community: Why certain forms of knowledge—surgical skill, caregiving, craftsmanship—are irreducibly embodied, and how AI should scale this expertise rather than replace itHopeful Rage: Beth's vision for reclaiming humanist spaces and community healing as essential infrastructure for navigating technological transformationBeth challenges the dominant narrative that AI will simply replace human workers, instead proposing systems designed to "augment and amplify human expertise." Her work at Bast AI demonstrates how explainable AI can maintain full provenance and transparency while reducing cognitive load—allowing healthcare providers to spend more time truly listening to patients rather than wrestling with bureaucratic systems. The conversation reveals how archaeological thinking—with its attention to context, layers of meaning, and long-term patterns—offers essential insights for building trustworthy AI systems. As Beth notes, "You can fake reading. You cannot fake swimming"—certain forms of embodied knowledge remain irreplaceable and should be the foundation for human-AI collaboration.About Beth Rudden: Beth Rudden is CEO and Chairwoman of Bast AI, building explainable artificial intelligence systems with full provenance and data sovereignty. A former IBM Distinguished Engineer and Chief Data Officer, she's been recognized as one of the 100 most brilliant leaders in AI Ethics. With her background spanning archaeology, cognitive science, and decades of enterprise AI development, Beth offers a grounded perspective on technology that serves human flourishing rather than replacing it.This interview was recorded as part of the lead-up to the Artificiality Summit 2025 (October 23-25 in Bend, Oregon), where Beth will be speaking about the future of trustworthy AI.

On Prophecy Radio episode #138, Karen and Kristen chat about The Red Pyramid chapters 31 and 32! They also talk about Karen's trip to Columbus for their book festival and a whole host of Rick Riordan-related Instagram posts. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:16:21) Percy Jackson and The Lightning Thief turns 20! The Percy Musical is hitting the road in the UK starting this August 15th! San Diego Comic Con starts this week, and the Percy Jackson cast will be in attendance. Could we get that season 2 trailer?! Percy series on Insta dropped some gifs from Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2. Rick and Mark are hitting the road for The Court of the Dead this fall. From Sept 23rd-10/1 they will be hitting 9 stops across the US. Check out the dates and locations here. The Red Pyramid discussion (00:23:31) Chapter 31: Who can we trust these days? Quick recap: Zia says not to trust Amos, and then guess who magically appears? Sadie is emotional about Bast's sacrifice, so it's good Carter handled that last chapter. Amos's look is not what Karen imagined. Set used Amos like a statue in a garden for the demons' amusement. Is Set the ultimate mastermind? or did Amos give him the slip? Best place to hide is definitely in a government missle-testing range. Let's hope Amos is wrong and Bast will be back sooner rather than later. Sadie has already made SO MANY SACRIFICES! Ba meet Geb. We swoon a little over Geb's heart pocket. What was with that cryptic message, Geb?! Favorite scenes and favorite lines. Chapter 32: Let's see where we stand. Muffin is giving every cat in this scene. Rick to readers: "We are not pulling a John Wick here." They can't trust Amos enough to tell him the plan, but they can definitely use his boat. Time to eat some yummy food in Las Cruces-Messilla. Just as Zia is defending Desjardins' allegiance against Set, he shows up and sticks to his script. Amos using storm magic?! Talk about a red flag. Zia's ultra-powerful column of fire proves she is all in with Sadie & Carter. Desjardins gets desperate... and summons Sekhmet! Favorite scenes and favorite lines. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 139, where we'll discuss The Red Pyramid chapters 33 and 34, as well as get you up to date on whatever Percy Jackson news might pop up. CATch Her in IMAX! On this week's episode of Hot Dave's Summer Film Fest Vol. V: The Future is Super Female!, Halle Berry plays Patience Phillips, a super hot nerd who is turned into a super hot Catwoman, as she battles a stone faced Sharon Stone who's out to turn the women of America into face cream addicted monsters – from visionary director Pitof, it's Catwoman! I'm your host, Dave, and joining me as we scrape the absolute bottom of the superhero barrel is fellow cinephile and Bast fanboy, Ryan. Topics of discussion in this episode include a question as to whether free movie vouchers included in Batman DVDs count towards a film's total box office gross; we wonder if the screenwriters used the Superhero Name Generator to come up with Catwoman's alter ego: Patience Phillips; and finally, we wonder how bad the shelved Batgirl movie could have possibly been if this was considered releasable. Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can also Like Us on Facebook, or shoot us an email at apocalypsevideopod@gmail.com That'll do it for this week's episode, true believers. We'll be back next time as we stay in the early 2000s era of superhero films with 2005's forgotten snoozefest, Elektra.
On Prophecy Radio episode #137, Karen and Kristen chat about The Red Pyramid chapters 29 and 30! They also talk about a bunch of book news from Rick Riordan, Roseanne A. Brown, and Roshani Chokshi. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:11:32) Kristen talks about her trip to Maine! We loved Rick's Pride post. Have you picked up your copy of Percy Jackson and the Olympians: A Guide to Gods & Monsters? Will you be picking up a copy of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2 tie-in novel? Roseanne A. Brown has a new duology coming out in 2027 and we are SO EXCITED. Did you catch the cover of The Swan's Daughter: A Possibly Doomed Love Story by Roshani Chokshi? The Red Pyramid discussion (00:27:37) We kick off with our The Red Pyramid chapter 29 discussion. Time to drive through Interstate 10 in Texas! Bast is great at “borrowing” vehicles–but don't worry, no one will be missing this one. We think. Carter has a theory. What do we think of it? What does Kristen think is going on with Desjardins? Who would YOU trust to drive the vehicle? Sadie does NOT want Carter to ask her any questions. We get some great insight into what is going on with Bast. There's NO WAY this will be relevant in the next chapter, right? Why did Anubis appear so hot to Sadie? Did Rick know what Bast's plan was when he wrote this chapter? Carter needs some alone time with his sword BUT IT'S NOT WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE. Horus is great at talking when you don't want him to and terrible at talking when you do. What does Kristen think of Zia's motivations? Uh, what's this about not trusting Amos?? Favorite scenes and favorite lines, as always. Time for our Red Pyramid chapter 30 discussion. Cats love to pounce, even if driving to the top of a mountain is super inconvenient. Why does Carter feel like this place is familiar? They need to speak into the water to make Nepthys appear, but Carter and Khufu are not liking the vibes. Despite it being a quick interaction, the immigrant family crossing the boarder seems like a poignant part of this chapter given everything going on these days. Sadie goes down, so it's Carter's time to shine. Too bad he has to take on a 20-foot tall god names Sobek. Carter proves himself in the fight, especially because he's able to control Horus. Bast is gone, but probably not forever. …Right!? They've still got problems, but at least Philip of Macedonia is there to save them! Oh, and Uncle Amos. But can they trust him?? Favorite scenes and favorite lines. Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 138, where we'll discuss The Red Pyramid chapters 31 and 32, as well as get you up to date on whatever Percy Jackson news might pop up. This week on the Lancaster Farming Industrial Hemp Podcast, we're talking about wipes. And diapers. And makeup pads. And all the other throwaway hygiene products we barely think about — but use every day. Most of these single-use items are made from plastic. Why? Because plastic is cheap, consistent, and engineered to run smoothly on fast-moving machines. But that convenience comes at a cost: landfill waste, microplastic pollution and a total disconnect from the land. But what if we could change that? What if the raw material for these essential products didn't come from oil — but from agriculture? From the hemp fields, even? This week, we talk to Jason Finnis from Bast Fiber Technologies, a company working to make that shift real — using hemp fiber to replace plastic in nonwoven hygiene products. Our guest is Jason Finnis, co-founder and Chief Innovation Officer at Bast Fiber Technologies, a clean-tech fiber company with operations in North Carolina and Germany. Jason's been working to bring hemp fiber into hygiene and personal care products for more than 30 years — not as a novelty, but as a high-performance alternative to synthetic materials. We talk about: • The massive and often invisible role of nonwovens in our daily lives • The hidden microplastics in wipes, pads and tampons — and why it matters • Why hemp fiber is a smart material for hygiene: absorbent, soft and compostable • What BFT looks for in hemp fiber: long, clean and consistent • The importance of regional supply chains and local farm partnerships • How consumer pressure, brand demand and European policy are aligning to create real momentum Jason shares his journey from selling hemp out of a VW bus in the '90s to helping build a future where everyday products are cleaner, greener and made from plants, not petroleum.

Stephanie Bast was abandoned in Korea, adopted by Italians and raised in a town so small and white, someone asked: “How are you gonna understand her when she starts speaking?” Fiercely loved and protected, she was taught to fear “the other” while knowing “the other” was herself. She started to write comedy to heal a wound. Now she writes to heal others, creating characters who think they're not enough, desperate to prove they're worthy of being saved. Stephanie lives in Los Angeles and is currently ISA's Story Farm fellow, Roadmap's Diversity Fellow, studied at UCLA extension and placed as a Finalist for Austin Film Festival, Final Draft's Big Break, CineStory, PAGE and The Writers Lab winner. A Broadway and TV/Film actress in the time when presenting as Asian was a detriment, she has turned the pain of her race into a super power. Stephanie writes for everyone who's adopted. She writes for everyone who hates looking in the mirror. She writes for her children, so they may always love their eyes. In a pinch, Stephanie can perform a reverse vasectomy. On Prophecy Radio episode #135, Karen and Kristen keep chugging right along with The Red Pyramid by discussing chapters 25 and 26! They also talk about Graci Kim's new release, Dreamslinger and check in on April's spotlight on independent bookstores. New episodes of Prophecy Radio will air every other week. All discussions are PG-13. News and Updates (00:04:59) Graci Kim's Dreamslinger is out now! Independent Bookstore day was fun. Kristen got a chance to check out a new store near her. We learn about an independent bookstore we want to visit in the UK someday. Columbus Book Festival has Roseanne A. Brown this year! Any upcoming book events near you? Let us know! Rick's Bluesky account continues to delight. Deep cut deities are a fabulous way to learn more about Greek mythology. The Red Pyramid discussion (00:19:13) Diving in to The Red Pyramid chapter 25 Back in Carter's POV! First we address Carter's thoughts on his being forced to take lizard-shape. Then back to the plot… and Thoth. Giant pyramid arena shows that ancient cultures show up in modern cities and countries. Graceland was absolutely a test for both Sadie and Carter. Is that glow that the building gave off after Thoth tossed the ankh around the statue's neck important?! Thoth doesn't help them understand the painting, but the magic book he has a little guidance for. There is an incantation that will allow them to banish Set to the Duat where he will be contained for centuries. They will need to learn Set's secret name and a Feather of Truth from the Land of Anubis. Khufu is gonna play guide. A wild riverboat appears! Favorite lines and favorite scenes! And now chapter 26 The Egyptian Queen has eyes painted that are moving, blinking, and looking for trouble. We discuss if that has something to do with mastheads on other ships. Bast is back! She introduces us to Captain Bloostained Blade, complete with human body and a double-bladed battle ax for a head. And the red specks on the edge of the blade are concerning… A boat you can summon once a year when you need it? Sign me up. Giving BSB their desination feels like telling a genie a wish. The last time Bast was on this boat, she was with Julius, and the kids' mother had just died. Cats and serpents are mortal enemies, which explains Bast and Apophis. The Ma'at doesn't like it when you insult order. That way lies chaos. Carter goes to bed and his ba immediately takes off. His ba gets to watch a crazy plane situation that Zia & Dejardins handle very skillfully. And a snow storm in Brooklyn. And finally a memory of what exactly Set did to Osiris, and what it means for Julius. Sadie wakes Carter. They have arrived at the First Cataract, aka The Land of the Dead. Favorite lines and favorite scenes! Feedback (01:12:46) A huge thanks to David Ludwig for his lobster roll advice! Kristen is excited to look for both hot and cold preparations while she is in Maine. The Dad vibes are strong with this video! Jay Duplass will not return as Hades in Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 2–but all is not lost. We love how much his kids love Percy Jackson, which means the likelihood of him coming back for Percy Jackson and the Olympians season 3 is pretty high. We can't remember if we discussed the Gray Sisters casting from D23 2024, but we're doing it now! Where do we know Sandra Bernhard, Kristen Schaal, and Margaret Cho from? The Red Pyramid discussion (00:19:45) Let's start with The Red Pyramid chapter 23. Sadie is human again! We find out how she did it. Nobody woke Carter for lunch, but that's the least of his worries right now. Bast thinks Set might not be the one at the top of the food chain here, and that's definitely cause for concern. It's time to head to Memphis–and this time they're not “borrowing” a car, though Bast still requires a convertible. There's a lot of atmospheric description to this book, and we're all for it. Baboons playing basketball is probably a good indication that a god is nearby. Carter is NOT great at basketball, but we find out why it's so important to him. We love how hard Sadie is working to be kind to him about this. Finally, we get to meet Toth, the god of wisdom, as well as all of his ibis receptionists. Is it weird that the Greeks likened him to Hermes? Ah, yes, the importance of astrology and leechcraft. The way Thoth's powers are portrayed was super interesting and makes you wonder how powerful he is. We get some important backstory about the relationship between Horus, Isis, Set, and Thoth. Thoth seems to be a bit of a contradiction–highly intelligent and yet not very observant. Knowing a creature's actual name has such power, and we love this concept. How can Sadie hold a goddess at bay if she was also having trouble with her sense of self enough to struggle coming out of her kite form? Did we all feel on a spiritual level how much Thoth didn't want to read his old work, or was that just us? Was this chapter too long and too full of information to really comprehend everything? Time for our favorite lines and favorite moments! Now it's time to head to Graceland in The Red Pyramid chapter 24. Was Elvis a magician? All signs point to yes. Seriously, though, music really is magical. It must be so weird to be at Graceland with no tourists. STOP DESTROYING NATIONAL MONUMENTS. Karen really wants to know what type of lizard Carter was turned into. Sadie is SO resourceful, and we loved seeing how she defeated the magicians. This time, we DO know what kind of reptile is on the page–and it's a big one! How did Sadie turn Carter back into a person? Was this just a test from Thoth? At least they fixed up Graceland before they left. Could the cat of Ra actually be Bast?? How does she feel about battling Apophis again? Favorite lines and favorite scenes! Thanks for listening, and tune in next time for episode 135, where we'll discuss The Red Pyramid chapters 25 and 26, as well as get you up to date on whatever Percy Jackson news might be out there. This episode's hosts are: Karen and Kristen Each episode, Prophecy Radio‘s hosts will discuss any official news coming out of Camp Half-Blood before doing a chapter by chapter reread of Percy Jackson or one of Rick Riordan's other series. Eli Pancamo's living room, now a makeshift office, is a polemical museum dedicated to counterculture. Works from artists like Erik Foss, Captain Outrageous and Bast hang with a story behind each piece. To his right, a pinball machine from Key West’s Star Roller Rink backs up to the late Shel Silverstein’s piano—something Pancamo taught himself to play over the past several months. His surroundings are a symbolic reflection to the juxtaposition of his psyche—both as an artist and intellectualist. During his rise as a notable restauranteur in Key West, Eli avoided the meritocratic path to success. His natural tendency is the road less traveled, where every failure and success are utilized as creative fuel. So it came as no surprise when he privately shared with me he was dabbling in AI (or Artificial Intelligence) and invited me over to showcase a platform he believes can change the world. Books Closed: Tattoos and the Internet Collide, Hosted by Andrew Stortz
Hold on tight, you are about to enter the mind of Julian Bast, and I don't think you are ready.(You can WATCH this video on YOUTUBE)Julian is a tattooer and artist who is focused on letting an unstructured process steer the ship. Modeling his approach after the freedom he saw his children have when making art, he keeps the idea of "play" at the forefront. I have admired everything he does for years, and was excited to finally meet him and spend some time getting tattooed and having the conversations you will see in this episode. We talk about how family and work have started to blend more seamlessly for him, the benefits of automatic drawing, and he tells a story about how he almost lost his mind while painting a mural...but just for a split second.Julian works at Name Brand Tattoo in Ann Arbor, MI.
