American hockey player Adam Johnson, who appeared in 13 NHL games with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2019 and 2020, has died after his neck was cut by a skate blade during a game in England on Saturday, his team said. He was 29. Johnson was playing for the Nottingham Panthers in a Challenge Cup game against the Sheffield Steelers when he suffered the skate cut during the second period of the Elite Ice Hockey League game at Sheffield's Utilita Arena. Johnson's injury was so horrific it forced the game to be abandoned and left traumatised fans in tears. “The Nottingham Panthers are truly devastated to announce that Adam Johnson has tragically passed away following a freak accident at the game in Sheffield last night,” the team said on Sunday. “The Panthers would like to send our thoughts and condolences to Adam's family, his partner and all his friends at this extremely difficult time. Everyone at the club including players, staff, management and ownership are heartbroken at the news of Adam's passing.” His mother Kari shared two photos with her son on social media, writing: “I lost half of my heart today.” Shocking video from the game, which the Herald has chosen not to share, shows a Sheffield Steelers' player knock into one of Johnson's teammates before becoming completely airborne and connecting with the Panther's player. According to the Daily Mail, Yorkshire Ambulance Service were called at around 8.21pm and sent two ambulances and a critical care paramedic. Johnson was taken to Sheffield's Northern General Hospital. South Yorkshire Police were contacted four minutes later, and confirmed that Johnson was pronounced dead at hospital. Police officers remained at the scene overnight and an investigation into the incident is ongoing. A Minnesota native, Johnson spent 13 games over parts of the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons playing for Pittsburgh in the NHL before spending the 2020-21 season in Sweden with the Malmo Redhawks. He had a goal and three assists for the Penguins. “The Pittsburgh Penguins join the entire hockey world in mourning the life of Adam Johnson, whose life tragically ended far too soon,” the Penguins said Sunday in a statement. “We offer our deepest condolences to Adam's family and friends, as well as all of Adam's past and present teammates and coaches. Adam will always be part of the Penguins family.” Johnson played college hockey at Minnesota-Duluth, helping the Bulldogs reach two NCAA Tournaments. He scored an overtime game-winner in the 2017 tournament, sending Minnesota-Duluth to the Frozen Four by beating Boston University. He also played for three American Hockey League clubs during his career and in Germany with the Augsburger Panther in 2022-23 before agreeing to join Nottingham for this season. “Our thoughts are also with the fans and staff of both clubs, especially those who attended or were following the game, who will be devastated following today's news,” the team added. “The Panthers would like to thank everyone who rushed to support Adam last night in the most testing of circumstances. Adam, our number 47, was not only an outstanding ice hockey player, but also a great teammate and an incredible person with his whole life ahead of him. The club will dearly miss him and will never ever forget him.” The league announced that all three games scheduled for Sunday in Belfast, Fife and Guildford were postponed following Johnson's death. Nottingham's game scheduled for Tuesday also was postponed. Ian Laperriere, who coached Johnson with the AHL's Lehigh Valley Phantoms, said it was tough news. “Great kid [and] teammate,” Laperriere said in a text message. “Only great things to say about him.” The NHL has had skate cut scares throughout its history, most notably Buffalo goaltender Clint Malarchuk, who took a blade to the neck during a game against St Louis on March 22, 1989. Malarchuk received rapid medical attention and played again 10 days later. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hour 1: Tonight is our live show in Jersey City. Gio will be debuting a new haircut. He's wearing a hat on TV today to save it for tonight. The Mets are ‘limping into opening day' according to Boomer. There doesn't seem to be any buzz to the Mets home opener. The Mets have an advertising patch on their sleeve and it is absolutely huge. Boomer wonders if the Yankees will eventually get a sponsor on the jersey. There was also a rules controversy at the Masters with Brooks Koepka's caddy. Jerry is here for his first update of the day but first Boomer told us that Sal Licata made a donation to Team Boompa for the Five Borough Bike Tour. Pete Alonso talked about the home opener and Jerry had audio from the Braves who have won 6-of-7 to start the season. Jerry also went around the NBA from last night and gave us an update on day one of the Masters. In the final segment of the hour, a minor league pitcher who gave up a HR to Fernando Tatis Jr. tweeted that a cheater on a rehab assignment for a steroid violating homered. Boomer said you rarely hear of an NHL player getting into any type of social media trouble. Sean Avery gets into trouble on social media but that wasn't really a thing when he was playing. Boomer talked about how difficult it is to drive down the streets of NY with deliveries and restaurant tables still in the streets. Hour 2: Gio is excited to see Francisco Alvarez as he is being called up for today's home opener for the Mets. Tomas Nido will start today according to Mike Puma. We also talked about the Mets bullpen with Edwin Diaz injured. Boomer is starting to think about the Devils and which players' jerseys he'll be stuffing in the freezer. Gio's outfit for tonight never arrived so he has to go shopping after the show. Jerry returns for an update but first Boomer talked about the NCAA Frozen Four. Something to do with hockey. The Padres have a pitcher with a new pitch called, ‘the slutter'. Jerry went around the NBA last night and we heard from Kevin Durant about their defense. Charles Barkley talked about the small soaps in hotels and how one almost slid into his butt. Boomer & Gio still look pretty good in their Masters pool. In the final segment of the hour, Paul the engineer comes in to glue a broken bobblehead. Hour 3: Ron Darling from SNY joins us to talk about the Mets home opener, what's the problem with Max Scherzer and whether Keith Hernandez ever picks up a tab. Jerry returns for an update and starts with a ‘what the hell is that?' It's Boomer laughing, and it sounds like an NHL goal horn. Buck Showalter talked about the Mets home opener and how this will get them into a routine since they've been on the road. The Giants beat the White Sox 16-6. Michael Conforto and JD Davis had homers. Jerry has an update of day one at the Masters. In the final segment of the hour, Cam Newton put out a list of QBs he'd be willing to back up this year. Maybe Aaron Rodgers will sign with the Jets today and he'll pop over to our live show in Jersey City. Boomer went through a list of QB salaries. Hour 4: Gio ordered an outfit for the live show tonight but it never arrived. Boomer said he will stop by ‘LeatherMan' in NYC today to find him something to wear. Boomer said Gio just wants Boomer to curse a lot tonight but Boomer said that's not his style. We previewed all the things we are doing at the live show tonight. Jerry returns for an update but first we talked about Fresca, which Boomer still loves. Pete Alonso is looking forward to playing at Citi Field as they've been on the road so far this season. Kay Adams had some problems opening a bottle of champagne and she got sprayed in the face. Jerry has audio from the Rangers loss to the St. Louis Blues. In the final segment of the hour, Dan in Carteret does not have tickets for tonight's live show. Boomer may end up having to put Hurricanes jerseys in the freezer as it could wind up as the Devils vs Islanders.
Hour 2: Gio is excited to see Francisco Alvarez as he is being called up for today's home opener for the Mets. Tomas Nido will start today according to Mike Puma.
