#212 - WE ARE JOSH KOSACK AND KOZI'S KIDS

We Are Superman

Many of you know that I'm a hockey fan and closely follow the University of Denver, which won its ninth national championship in April this year. On the day between the semifinals and finals while I was there in Boston for the Frozen Four, they present awards, most notably for the Hobey Baker, which goes to the best player in college hockey. The hockey Heisman, if you will. Among the other awards is a huge honor for one college player, the Hockey Humanitarian Award. This year's winner was Josh Kosack of Union College, which is a small but mighty school in Schenectady, NY. Josh's story and his acceptance speech resonated with me, so I reached out and brought him onto the WASP. Josh grew up in Oakville, ON, outside Toronto, eventually played with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL on the juniors circuit, and then came to Union, from where he earned his economics degree. What I love about this story is how a random act snowballed into a big deal that ultimately helped a lot of kids. Josh was leaving the ice after warming up for a game at Dartmouth and he gave a puck to a boy named Patrick Doner, who has Down Syndrome. Well that led to Patrick becoming a big fan of Josh's, and later to Josh connecting with the C.O.C.O.A. House in Schenectady, which helps disadvantaged kids, and its executive director, Will Rivas. The acronym stands for Children of Our Community Open to Achievement. Josh developed a following there called Kozi's Kids and in the first year raised $5000 to buy laptops and online learning equipment. Then things took off as the word got out. Kozi's Kids raised $50,000 the next year, culminating with Josh's Hockey Humanitarian Award and a $3000 check from its foundation. Josh is a humble young man who showed how one very simple act of kindness – along with a heart rooted in service – can make an amazing impact in the world. I hope you enjoy this!Josh KosackInstagram @joshkosackC.O.C.O.A. Housecocoahouse.orgFacebook and Instagram @cocoahouseincBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor

Former Vancouver Canuck, Cory Schneider, joined Matt and Blake for a special Easter weekend special show. Talked about finally getting in with the Islanders. Had a rough start leading into covid. Things snowballed from there. Was feeling good about his game in the American League before he got called up in Jersey. Talked about signing with the Isles. It was a familiar option for him with Lou there. Going on a deep playoff run with the team reinvigorated him. Says he wasn’t about playing in the AHL. A lot of people look down at it but he hadn’t played in a year and a half. He just wanted to play games and prove to himself that he could still play. Talked about what he heard from other guys who had contemplated retirement. Was as nervous for his last start as he was when he broke into the league. Talked about how great it is for his family to see him play in the NHL again. Win or lose he is proud of himself to be back when people thought he wasn’t going to play again. Not touting himself as an underdog. Cory talked about his living situation. Commuted from Jersey to Long Island all of last year. Talked about the accent and not having a BOS accent. Says the biggest factor is that his parents aren’t originally from there. Talked about why he chose to go to Boston College. Education was very important to him. Hockey was a luxury for him. He needed to have good grades to be able to play. Cory talked about some of the players he played with who don’t fit the natural hockey body style. Cory does not want to talk about his Beanpot record… would rather win a Frozen Four.Talked about breaking into Manitoba with the Moose. He felt ready for pro after three years of college. Would have loved to play a fourth year but saw the money that he didn’t want to turn down. The team gave him the max, which caught him off-guard. Knew nothing about Winnipeg, even as an educated guy. Talked about Scott Arniel. Talked about the time he was called out by Arnie. Told him he wasn’t ready for pro, from what he’d seen. Had kind of left him alone to that point. After that meeting, he started to play the best he had ever played. Says the reason he was still in the A was because he was a first round pick, otherwise would have been sent to the ECHL. Says they talk more as piers now, rather than a player-coach relationship. You can take those moment and it can go either way. Says it led him to the path he went on. Talked about how he felt after Lu signed a 12 year deal. Wasn’t a fan of it at the start but all worked out. Talked about his relationship with Luongo. Very easy with Lu. Tough competitor. Says that Roberto quickly made it clear that he wouldn’t be hard on him. Got to learn from two of the best goalies to ever play. Try's not to rehash what could have been. If you told him when he drafted that the career he had was what he would have, he would have said hell ya. Don’t feel sorry for him, he is fine. Don’t be sad for him. Be sad for what is going on in the world. Has never gotten to really know Bo Horvat, though he knows him well. The first couple years, the trade was working for both sides. Things change. No point in comparing himself to him. Says that Bo probably doesn’t give a damn about the old guy in Jersey…Talked about being in the middle of the fascination that was who was going to start on any given night. Applauds the media in Vancouver for taking that story and making the most of it. Told Matt and Blake they are welcome… Found it funny because people kind of pick sides even though we all wanted the Canucks to win. Says that it was probably way harder on Roberto than him.Talked about what’s next for him. Wants to think about what is best for his family. At what point does he say if he needs to grind it out for another year for his sake. Or is it time to put the family first. Not sure he wants to hang on to hang on. He isn’t arrogant enough to think teams are lining up to sign him. Talked more about life after hockey. Says he wants to do media like Kevin and bullshit along like he has. He is comfortable with his strengths and connections to do whatever he wants to do. Blessed to be in a financial position that he doesn’t have to work. Coaching seems like a very hard living. Likes the management side but doesn’t know what he would consider in that route. Not very interested in stopping playing and going back to a team where he is away from his family. Can’t keep up with Lu and his 15 fantasy lineups. Can’t think the game like Hank and Danny. Sucks to miss daughters dance and son’s t-ball game. As you get older your priorities change. Will one day consider it heavily.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Introduction: Randy Johnson joins host Michael Rand from Boston, where he covered the Gophers' season-ending 5-1 loss to Minnesota State-Mankato in Thursday's Frozen Four semifinals. It was a butt-kicking for most of the game, as Gophers coach Bob Motzko said, and it showed just how good these Mavericks are heading into Saturday's title game vs. Denver. For the Gophers, it was a season of overachieving to a degree. What comes next will be interesting. 8:00: Rand takes one more look at the Twins pitching staff, a highly volatile group considering there are numerous questions in both the rotation and the bullpen as the season begins Friday. Who is going to get the final nine outs of games with Taylor Rogers gone, let alone the first 18 in a rotation with a lot of candidates but few sure things? Plus the Wolves are locked into the play-in round now -- a fate that was a goal at the start of the year but now feels more like a punishment given how well they have played. 14:00: Star Tribune Wild beat writer Sarah McLellan joins the show in advance of Friday's game against St. Louis. The Wild is a combined 0-4 against Nashville and the Blues this year. With three games left against those potential playoff opponents among its final 13 games, the Wild has some work to do. 30:00: An ode to Tiger Woods.

Introduction: Host Michael Rand looks at the Wolves' 132-114 loss to Washington on Tuesday and finds one word stands out: disappointing. Though getting the No. 6 seed and avoiding the play-in tournament was a long shot, a win coupled with what turned out to be a Denver loss to San Antonio on Tuesday would have given the Wolves a real chance. Instead, they are left to lament a defense that has been subpar lately and a focus that has been wandering in recent games. 6:00: The Wild has lost three lopsided games to Nashville this season, including Tuesday's fight-filled 6-2 defeat. If these teams end up facing each other in the playoffs, this specific tough matchup could become an issue. 9:00: The Gophers men's hockey team faces Minnesota State-Mankato in Thursday's Frozen Four semifinals. The pride of Minnesota is on the line in the game -- shown on ESPNU after being bumped because of MLB's schedule change -- and the Star Tribune's Randy Johnson helps break it all down. 20:00: Tiger Woods is going to play in The Masters, which makes the tournament infinitely more compelling ... a listener asks about the transfer portal, and Rand answers ... the Twins officially postponed their opener to Friday.

The win over Quinnipiac means Beniers watch has been delayed for another week. In the interim, there's plenty of Kraken hockey to watch and talk about (though there were only two games to discuss prior to this episode). One thing worth noting is a hot start by Daniel Sprong after he was acquired at the NHL Trade Deadline. After a hearty dose of Kraken and NCAA talk, John, Andy, and Darren shift to break down the Evgenii Dadonov fiasco in Vegas. They then move into their segments, which this week include Weekly One-Timers, Tweets of the Week, and Three Stars. SUBSCRIBE! ENJOY! REVIEW!

They were higher quality, and Nova was 30% from their contested threes, and that was the way Michigan could win this game but the shots didn't go in. Also the shots didn't go in. We run out of ways to say that. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. Postseason starts at 16:48 Who's coming back? Houstan probably. Diabate on the knife edge. Please go subscribe and like their podcast, and leave your hot takes about this game in the reviews. 1. Tennessee starts at 1:00 Really exploring the space is a reference to the more cowbell sketch. Michigan couldn't keep up with the speed of the Vols' guards but it didn't matter because Tennessee hadn't played Eli "Hooks" or anything like Dickinson, who turned questionable possessions into good ones. Huge game for Williams, but for four turnovers it's the Brooks game. We can rely on Collins because he's so quick. We know what this looks like: Xavier Simpson. 2. Colorado State starts at 29:20 The Frankie Collins game. What he did to Isaiah Stevens changed the game. Michigan also managed to hold Roddy outside, which when you're taking away usage from him it's going to less effective players. Those less effective guys unfortunately were canning all of their threes, and all the bounces went the Rams way, which led to the frustrating parts of the first half. Medved did a great job to get Hunter Dickinson switched onto tiny guys. Solution was as soon as they got some space Frankie took it away. Also one turnover! Also 65% from two! 3. Hot Takes and Villanova Preview starts at 44:07 Defending Rick Barnes, a new shot clock rule based on icing. Too hype on Frankie and Terrance? Nova: They're small, they shoot, they bring more smallness and shooting off the bench. #1 team at free throws. 46% of their shots are threes. Can Michigan keep up with Dickinson scoring? The fickle mistress of the arc will decide this game. Gillespie played against Michigan in the national championship game, has come very far since. Big East was a shooting league--hopeful they're not ready for Big Ten bigs. 4. Hockey Big Ten Tourney Champs & Tourney Preview starts at 1:12:24 Minnesota fans in Rod Marinelli Arena livid at obvious calls >>>>> Allentown regional. Seth is at fault for the ending of the Minnesota game, but it was a clinic from 1 minute in to the rest there at the Bobby Ross center. This felt different than previous games at Wayne Fontes Rink: fans were really into it and that made it an epic game you really wanted to win. It also secured the first overall seed and basically the dream scenario for the tournament, since Minnesota State got both NoDak and NoDam, and Michigan got a couple of teams who will actually play hockey. Frozen Four favorites? Certainly. But single-elimination hockey in front of zero fans is stupid.
