Life's biggest wins come from quiet consistency. For Olympic gold medalist Jocelyne Lamoureux-Davidson, that meant showing up every day and finding joy in the daily grind. In this episode, she reflects on her journey as an elite athlete, mother of four children, and advocate for equality in women's hockey. We discuss why finding enjoyment in the monotony on the road to excellence matters, how to parent athletes in a way that pushes them without pressure, and ways men can help fight for equality and representation in the game. Tune in to hear what's helped Jocelyne make an impact on and off the ice! Topics discussed: Jocelyne's unique relationship with her twin, Monique The importance of finding joy in the daily grind Jocelyne's role in the 2017 fight for equal pay What it really means to be a winner Balancing honest feedback and encouragement for kids How increased marketing has changed women's hockey How men can be allies in women's hockey Mentorship, coaching, and growth Listen to episode 238, Empowering the Next Generation with Kellan Brown, here: https://www.mitlinfinancial.com/insights/blog/empowering-the-next-generation-with-kellan-brown/ Resources: Mitlin Financial: https://www.mitlinfinancial.com/ The JOY and Productivity Journal by Lawrence Sprung: https://www.amazon.com/JOY-Productivity-Journal-brought-mindset/dp/B0CYQFYW54/ Download Your Free Copy of the Couple's JOYful Money Guide: https://mitlin.us/CouplesJOY Connect with Larry Sprung: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lawrencesprung/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/larry_sprung/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LawrenceDSprung/ X (Twitter): https://x.com/Lawrence_Sprung Connect with Rachel Solomon Fascitelli: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jocelyneusa17/ Twitter: https://x.com/lamoureuxtwins Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/LamoureuxTwins/ Website: www.lamoureuxtwins.com About our Guest: Born and raised in Grand Forks, North Dakota as the youngest of six children, Jocelyne and her twin sister Monique excelled as young athletes and became North Dakota's first Olympic Gold Medalists. Despite growing up with no opportunity to play on girls hockey teams, they did not let that stop them from developing into some of the best players in the state. They attended Shattuck St. Mary's School where they elevated the women's hockey program to national prominence and won three national titles during their high school careers. The Lamoureux twins rewrote the record books at the University of North Dakota, setting nearly every individual record in program history while becoming some of the best players in NCAA history and multiple-time All-Americans during their collegiate careers. During their 15 years on the USA Women's National Team, Monique and Jocelyne rose to become two of the all-time greats in women's hockey, winning one Olympic gold medal, two Olympic silver medals, six world championships and one world championship runner-up, along with multiple individual awards and accolades. They are USA Hockey Hall of Fame inductees and 2nd and 3rd youngest North Dakota natives to be given the Teddy Roosevelt Award in the State of North Dakota. Their most important victories have come off the ice in their fight for gender equity for women in hockey and sports. They were key leaders in negotiating Team USA's first-ever contract that provided more opportunities, compensation and benefits for women and girls who play hockey in America. They continue to give back to the state of North Dakota through the Monique and Jocelyne Lamoureux Foundation, which helps serve underprivileged youth. They have inspired a generation to dream big, but most importantly their legacy will be about making a difference in people's lives as they strive toward those dreams. In this latest episode of Ed's occasional podcast Climate Book Reviews, we dive into the wildly imaginative and disturbingly plausible world of Ashley Shelby's acclaimed story collection, Honeymoons in Temporary Locations.Recently named one of Fresh Energy's Favorite Climate Books of 2025 and shortlisted for the Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize, Shelby's collection has been praised by Scientific American, Foreword, and the Post and Courier for its biting wit, emotional punch, and genre-bending storytelling.Ed is joined by his regular co-host Dr. Roger Thompson—now Director of Writing Programs and Professor at Arizona State University—for a lively, funny, and far-ranging conversation with Shelby herself. They unpack her satirical takes on resistance, inequality and privilege in crisis (think "luxury apocolypse bunkers”), and what it means to grieve - and medicate away - the losses brought on by climate change.Shelby's work has appeared in Slate, The New York Times Book Review, LitHub, Salon, and Audubon, and she's received the Red Hen Press Short Fiction Award, the Enizagam Short Story Award, and the Third Coast Fiction Prize. She's also the author of Red River Rising, an acclaimed account of the 1997 Grand Forks flood. If you like your climate fiction smart, satirical, and maybe a little too close to home, this one's for you.More info and past Climate Book Reviews episodes at: climatebookreviews.coSend us a text (if you'd like a response, please include your email)Produced by Amit Tandon & Bespoke Podcasts ___Energy vs Climate Podcastwww.energyvsclimate.com Contact us at info@energyvsclimate.com Bluesky | YouTube | LinkedIn | X/Twitter
By the early 1900s, amateur mechanics in North Dakota were building their own motor cars and whizzing down dirt roads at the mind-boggling speed of 8 miles per hour. The other rage of the time was aviation. North Dakotans were in on that, too. In 1910, Archie Hoekse created a sensation with the first successful North Dakota flight at Grand Forks. And there was Frances Klingensmith, the first woman in the state to get a pilot's license.

Water in the Red River Valley takes a path that may look odd on a map. That's because the Red River flows north to Lake Winnipeg in Canada. From there, it heads for saltwater, emptying into the Hudson Bay and eventually reaching the ocean. Somewhere along this route, lodged in a beaver dam or trucking downstream, are small wooden canoes that were decorated and launched by students from about 40 elementary schools in Minnesota and North Dakota. Each boat has a QR code and postcard instructing anyone who finds it to share the location. For more on the program called River of Dreams, MPR News host Nina Moini talks with Taylor Lemieux and Ashley Loe. Lemieux is a watershed education coordinator for the International Water Institute, based in Fargo, and Loe is a fifth-grade teacher in Grand Forks, N.D.
This Friday's episode brings everything from belly laughs to tear-jerking moments. Host Scott Hennen goes off-script with a freewheeling, listener-powered first hour that includes everything from giveaways and grocery prices to deep dives into faith, politics, school choice, and even conspiracy theories around gold reserves and Fort Knox. With guests like Nick Hall—a Grand Forks kid turned international evangelist—and listener stories that hit home, this one's a rollercoaster of passion, politics, and popcorn-worthy radio. Stick around for the stunning story of a tearful $10,000 grocery giveaway winner... and find out why one caller says not winning made him a bigger winner.
North Dakota was sweltering during the summer of 1930. The state was in the grip of an oppressive heatwave. Heat and humidity had caused extreme discomfort for several days. Temperatures hovered in the high 90s, and the humidity made things even worse. Hettinger was the hottest spot in the state, hitting 101 degrees. Other towns weren't far behind. Beach and Grand Forks recorded 99, and Williston reached 98. North Dakotans were getting tired of the heat.

It's Thursday, June 26th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 140 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark and Adam McManus Iranian Christians vulnerable to arrest, falsely accused of espionage Christians in Israel and Iran are experiencing fear and uncertainty during recent conflict between the two countries. Christians already face arrest in Iran for simply leading a house church. An Iranian believer told International Christian Concern, “The Iranian government is now arresting anyone caught taking or sharing photos and videos with news outlets. Christians are especially vulnerable, as they risk being accused of espionage and deemed a threat to national security. If their faith is discovered, the consequences are far worse.” Iran is ranked ninth on the Open Doors' World Watch List of the most difficult countries to be a Christian. Hebrews 13:3 says, “Remember the prisoners as if chained with them—those who are mistreated—since you yourselves are in the body also.” ICE arrested 11 Iranian nationals, one served as Iranian army sniper U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested 11 Iranian nationals over the weekend. The individuals entered the U.S. illegally, and one of them reportedly served as an Iranian Army sniper. Officials are on high alert for extremist attacks after the U.S. bombed Iranian nuclear facilities on Saturday. Iran has threatened to carry out retaliatory terrorist attacks using sleeper cells in America. Trump thrilled that NATO paying their fair share The NATO military alliance of western nations held its 2025 summit in the Netherlands this week. NATO countries agreed to raise defense spending to 5% of annual gross domestic product over the next 10 years. That's up from the current target of 2%. This comes after U.S. President Donald Trump has called on European countries to contribute more to the defense budget of the alliance. Listen to comments from Trump. TRUMP: “This is a monumental win for the United States, because we were carrying much more than our fair share. It was quite unfair, actually. But this is a big win for Europe and for actually, Western civilization.” Muslim socialist beat Andrew Cuomo in NYC Dem primary for mayor A Muslim socialist won the Democrat primary for New York City mayor on Tuesday. Remarkably, Zohran Mamdani, age 33, defeated former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo in the race. (Watch his election night victory speech) MAMDANI: “Tonight, we made history. (cheering) In the words of Nelson Mandela, ‘It always seems impossible until it is done.' (cheering) My friends, we have done it. (cheering) I will be your Democratic nominee for the mayor of New York City.” (cheering) Mamdani has served as a New York state lawmaker. He campaigned on making the Big Apple more affordable, calling for free public transit, rent freezes, and universal childcare. If elected, he would be the city's first Muslim mayor. President Trump sounded off on Truth Social. He wrote, “Zohran Mamdani, a 100% Communist Lunatic, has just won the Dem Primary, and is on his way to becoming Mayor. We've had Radical Lefties before, but this is getting a little ridiculous. … He's got [U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez]. … and even our Great Palestinian Senator, Cryin' Chuck Schumer, ,,, groveling over him.” Two-thirds of churchgoers attend weekly The Exploring the Pandemic Impact on Congregations project released a new report on U.S. churchgoers this month. The survey found two-thirds of respondents attend services weekly. And over 80% report stable or increased attendance compared to five years ago. The survey noted a positive outlook: “Many more respondents said their religious faith and spirituality had strengthened since the pandemic. Likewise, financial giving has increased, as has involvement and volunteering.” In terms of newcomers, 38% of churchgoers began attending their church since the COVID-19 pandemic. Of these new attenders, nearly a third never attended church before or are returning to church after years of not participating. Astronauts from India, Poland and Hungary head to Int'l Space Station Astronauts from India, Poland, and Hungary blasted off for the International Space Station yesterday. It's the first time astronauts from those countries have gone to space in over 40 years. Axiom Space arranged the flight which launched from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The mission is part of NASA's effort to open space to private companies. Axiom is among several American space companies hoping to put their own space stations into orbit. The Polish astronaut on the mission said space “is not only for the biggest agencies anymore—space is for everyone.” Psalm 8:3-4 reminds us, “When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars, which You have ordained, what is man that You are mindful of him, and the son of man that You visit him?” 8 Worldview listeners gave $3,375 to fund our annual budget And finally, toward our $123,500 goal by Monday, June 30th to fully fund The Worldview annual budget for our 6-member team, 8 listeners stepped up to the plate. Our thanks to Augustine in Auburn, California who gave $25, James in Lebanon, Oregon who gave $50 as well as Stephen in Adrian, Oregon and Mark in Grand Forks, North Dakota–both of whom gave $100. And we were touched by the generosity of Doreen in Caldwell, Idaho who gave $1,000, Shane in Columbia City, Indiana who $1,200, and Scooter in Naples, Florida who, as promised, matched twelve $1,000 donors with his matching gift of $12,000 which has already been incorporated into our previous total. Those 8 Worldview listeners gave a total of $3,375. Ready for our new grand total? Drum roll please. (Drum roll sound effect) $70,908.55 (People clapping and cheering sound effect) That means by this coming Monday, June 30th, we need to raise $52,591.45 in just 5 days. That's $10,518.29 per day! We are looking for 9 super donors. Could you give $10,000? Or perhaps you feel the Lord prompting you to become one of 3 businesspeople who could give $5,000? Or one of 5 businesspeople who could contribute $2,500? If so, those donations would total $37,500. Then, we would need another 6 people to pledge $100/month for 12 months for a gift of $1,200. And another 12 people to pledge $50/month for 12 months for a gift of $600? Please, go to TheWorldview.com and click on Give on the top right. The American Legion is the largest veteran's organization in the nation and has been a part of North Dakota since 1919. Each year members from across the state gather for their annual Department Convention, where the business of the organization is conducted, and officers are elected for the new year. In 1935, Grand Forks hosted the event, and it was a grand affair.

Live from Grand Forks, this fiery WOYM episode dives into shocking headlines, political unrest, and patriotic pride — all wrapped in classic Scott Hennen commentary. A routine traffic stop on I-29 leads to the discovery and detonation of an explosive device, sparking big questions: Who were the suspects? What were their intentions? And is there a deeper connection to the nationwide “No Kings” protests happening this weekend?

Today's episode of What's On Your Mind is a political rollercoaster with a twist of optimism, community, and free donuts. We shift gears with Free Plug Friday, spotlighting local events like Celebrate Jesus in Grand Forks and North Dakota's Association for the Blind convention. Plus, Scott talks with Senator John Hoeven and Congressman Dusty Johnson about what's really in the “Big Beautiful Bill” — taxes, border security, reconciliation, and that mysterious AI provision. ☕ Oh, and it's National Donut Day. So maybe not everything is terrible. ⏱️ Timestamps & Standout Moments: 0:00 – 8:40 | Opening monologue: Trump vs. Musk – trainwreck or tactical move? 8:41 – 15:35 | Is this feud political theater? Reading the documents on the rise of Syttende Mai celebrations in North Dakota in 1906, I was more than a little alarmed at the themes and tropes that emerged. In matters of ethnic identity, I am prepared to accept a certain measure of cultural chauvinism, but the remarks of future senator Asle Jorgenson Gronne in Grand Forks went way beyond that. They stereotyped immigrant cultures (including his own!), they invoked white supremacy, and they posed a fossilized model for immigration: We're here, we got ours, now close the door, we're done!
It's a jam-packed Friday edition of What's On Your Mind with Scott Hennen and co-host Kevin Flynn. Senator Kevin Cramer joins for the full hour for an open-line, no-topic-off-limits town hall. From Elon Musk's government exit and China trade tension, to bizarre boat license laws and rumors of angry Canadians, this one covers a lot of ground—and then some. Top Takeaways: Elon Musk wraps up his 130-day stint as a special government employee. He exits stage right, not out of conflict with Trump, but due to a time limit. DOGE.gov, Musk's efficiency watchdog team, claims to have deactivated over 500K unnecessary government credit cards and slashed 160 bloated contracts. Senator Cramer just returned from a meeting with Canada's new PM and says progress is possible—even after the 51st state comments stirred some northern tension. Listeners call in with everything from veterans' flags to personal conveyance rules for truckers. And Michelle Obama's comments about reproductive health? Let's just say Scott calls them “diabolical.” Standout Moments & Timestamps:⏱️ 0:00 – 1:00 | Scott sets the tone: Elon Musk, Senator Cramer, Royce White, and upcoming royalty owner convention in Bismarck.⏱️ 2:00 – 3:30 | The truth about Elon Musk's "exit" from government service—spoiler: it's statutory, not scandalous.⏱️ 4:10 – 5:50 | Trump's new Truth Social post: China's economic peril and deal betrayal.⏱️ 6:00 – 8:30 | Boat driver's license?! Minnesota's new youth boating law raises eyebrows.⏱️ 10:00 – 14:00 | Inside DOGE.gov: Half a million deactivated government credit cards and tens of millions in savings.⏱️ 21:00 – 23:00 | Scott busts the myth of angry Canadians slashing tires in Grand Forks.⏱️ 29:00 – 33:00 | Michelle Obama's comments spark a passionate monologue from Scott—"The least important thing a reproductive system does is create life"?⏱️ 42:00 – 50:00 | Senator Cramer joins: Full recap of his Canada trip, Carney vs. Trudeau, trade boulders, and 2026 USMCA review.⏱️ 51:00 – 53:00 | Veteran reports tattered flag & DEI overload at Fargo Vet Center.⏱️ 59:00 – 1:05:00 | Audience hammers Cramer on congressional wealth and stock trades—"Explain Nancy Pelosi's portfolio!"⏱️ 1:06:00 – 1:10:00 | North Dakota trucker calls in: FMCSA personal conveyance rule changes would hurt over-the-road drivers.⏱️ 1:17:00 – 1:28:00 | NARO President Cash Lund previews the June 18–19 North Dakota Royalty Owners Convention in Bismarck.

"The way the current process is set up, it is ready for exploitation and weaponization," Rebecca Binstock said on this episode of Plain Talk. Binstock is the executive director of the North Dakota Ethics Commission, and she admits that there are problems with the status quo. For instance, public servants who have a complaint filed against them are prohibited, under threat of criminal penalty, from talking about it, even though the person who filed the complaint is free to say whatever they want. She also says that complaints take too long to process because they require the commission to host what can be a lengthy and often fruitless mediation between the complainant and the respondent. But rather than fix these issues, Binstock says lawmakers seem more interested in making the commission's job harder. Recently, a House committee that is considering the commission's budget cut funding for a new staffer-- currently the staff consists of just Binstock and two others--and imposed a 180 day time limit for a complaint. While Binstock said a deadline might make sense in some circumstances, in this context, it may make their jobs next to impossible. In response to the committee's actions, the Ethics Commission put out a statement saying the changes are "a roadblock intended to hamper the commission's work.” That language--specifically the use of the word "hamper"--is interesting because the ethics amendment to the state constitution states, "Laws may be enacted to facilitate, safeguard, or expand, but not to hamper, restrict, or impair" the ethics commission. Does the commission consider the committee's actions a potential constitutional violation? "It certainly has been a discussion," Binstock said, when asked. "I think the commission statement kind of speaks for itself," she added. Also on this episode, Sen. Jeff Barta, a Republican from Grand Forks, responds to the defeat of a so-called "parental rights" bill, the passage of a new legislation governing genders in bathrooms, and his work to create a collaborative process between the U.S. military and state/local interests when it comes to the impact of development and industrialization about military installations in our state. Gov. Kelly Armstrong is pushing a "bell to bell" ban on cell phones in schools, and his inspiration is a book called the Anxious Generation, which was written by Jonathan Haidt. But it's more than a book. It's also a movement. Casey Mock, the senior policy manager for Anxious Generation, joined this episode of Plain Talk to discuss their initiative. Some are condemning this effort as another teen panic, but Mock says that's not so. "You know what makes it different from a moral panic like the satanic panic or even going back to Salem witch trials type witch hunts is that we actually have pretty clear data that demonstrates the impact that not just phones but also social media is having on kids mental health on their educational," Mock said. "There's just pretty clear data that's been assembled over the last decade, decade and a half since these things have become mainstream which makes it materially different from some of these earlier moral panics." He said the goal of the legislation is to make state government the"bad cop" and taking pressure off educators to police phone use. Also on this episode, Coiya Tompkins, president of Grand Forks-based Community Violence Intervention Center, and Seth O'Neill, executive director of the North Dakota Domestic and Sexual Violence Coalition, talked about the uncertainties chaos in the federal government is creating for their work. O'Neill said that getting answers on their current funding, and future appropriations, has proven hugely difficult among cuts implemented by top Trump administration adviser Elon Musk and his Department of Government Efficiency team. "So we just heard recently that the CDC, which funds rape prevention and education, they basically decimated that division. Cut people. We don't even know who we're supposed to supposed to call or who is our a grant manager there because they just pretty much cut everyone," he said. "What I've been telling both federal people at the federal congressional level as well as our state folks is that we do not believe that what we are proposing is a want. It's a need," Tompkins added. Both argued that while cuts to their programs may save money in the short term, over a longer period of time costs will accumulate if their services, which often help prevent crime and violence and ease burdens on the criminal justice system, become less accessible.
