Sunday, March 9, 2025 – The title of today’s study on 1 John 2:12-24 is “Abide & Grow.” Here’s a question to consider as we begin: “What is the overall theme of Scripture?” There are various answers, but today's study highlights “Spiritual Growth” as one of the key themes. Physical growth and spiritual growth have much in common. It’s clear from Scripture that God wants His children to grow into spiritually mature men and women capable of overcoming the enemy. God does not want anyone to remain a “spiritual baby” longer than necessary. Physically, we cannot alter our growth process; we have no choice – we are going to grow old. However, our spiritual growth is entirely about choice. We can choose whether and how quickly we are going to grow spiritually. Does this make sense? God is a finisher – meaning that He doesn’t start with the intention of not finishing, and neither should we. Our spiritual growth depends on the energy and effort we invest in it. We grow by abiding in Christ and remaining connected to the vine, as described in John 15. Worship and study with us as we abide and grow in Christ.

Life has milestones along the way. Sunday, January 28th, 2024, was the 5 year birthday of Renaissance Church, a significant milestone in the life of the church. Every milestone is a marker of a season and each season is significant because tomorrow is built on today. Immature Christians may be standing in the light, but they are not walking in the light. They are going nowhere, suffering from arrested spiritual development.
God wants all of his children to become like Jesus Christ. We will examine the four stages of spiritual growth so that we can identify which stage we are in, thereby allowing God to complete his good work in us.

The apostle John answers a really common question that most Christians ask themselves at some point: “How do I KNOW that I’m saved?” & “How do I KNOW that I know God?” [2:3]. John’s answer: “we keep His commands”. You know you know God if you do what He says, if you keep His word. And John goes on to explain what that looks like lived out: you will love others. There are plenty of things that are complicated and beyond our grasp of understanding, but I don’t think John’s teaching here is one of them. Comprehension is generally not our problem with living this out - motivation is. We aren’t convinced that the effort is worth the inconvenience of obedience. But it is, for the sake of Christ. Many of us are looking for assurance of salvation, and John is revealing 2 great principles: obedience and love. These are proofs of a person who is abiding in Christ. The sins of God's children are forgiven because of the atoning work of Christ, and so that they might live for Christ – for His name’s sake, so they could now go live differently than they were before. Regardless of gender or age, every believer has the privilege & responsibility to lead younger believers. Every believer has the privilege of assurance and the responsibility of engaging.

Believers can be confident of their salvation for several reasons. It’s about what Jesus did, not what we do (on account of his name), salvation comes through relationship with Christ (to know him), Jesus overcame the evil one for us, and God’s word gives us strength.

Today we are going to learn from a poem that the Apostle John wrote about spiritual growth in 1 John 2:12-14.
Rev. Darin Stone continues in our sermon series from 1 John as we learn the marks of true Christianity. How can we know and have confidence that we are walking faithfully with Christ? In this message, Rev. Stone discusses five ways 1 John 2:12-14 gives us assurance and encouragement. 1. Your sins are forgiven, 2. You know the Father, 3. You are strong, 4. The Word of God abides in You and 5. You have overcome the evil one.
Children, young men and old men are addressed in John's first letter. In this teaching, you will enjoy teaching by Ric Hicks and some lively discussion concerning these three kinds of people; within the context of our spiritual growth.
Encouragement to you no matter where you are on your spiritual journey with Jesus!
