Sunday sermons from Chewelah Evangelical Free Church
Pastor Ethan continues our series in the book of Acts with a message on Discerning God's Will from Acts 1:12-26.
The second half of Acts 1 looks mostly like information, but Pastor Bobby points out how it can lead us to inspiration knowing God is never surprised.
When tough decisions need to be made, consider prayer [v.14] and Scripture [v.16]. When things were unsettling, Peter and the disciples go to the Word of God, not feelings or opinions. They took what they knew from the Word of God and acted in light of the advancement of the Gospel. For the disciples in Acts 1 and for us today, the primary place for discovering the will of God is in the pages of Scripture. Christians ought to give priority to the clearly revealed will of God found in the Bible. Now, the Holy Spirit is the Counselor who helps God’s people make wise decisions.

On the final Sunday of Easter, we are reminded once more of what Jesus’ resurrection and ascension means for us today. Each of us is special to God, for He chooses us even if the world doesn’t. As with Justus, we are chosen by grace to be one of God’s children. Regardless of our role in the congregation, we are witnesses to God’s love and forgiveness. It is wonderful to live as one of God’s special, chosen ones!
Acts 1:12-26
I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:1-2

Because our faith exists within the world, we join with others and become a community, an organization, an institution within the world. We are more than a collection of individuals who seek interaction with God on a personal level; we are a people, a community, organized to worship, serve, learn and grow together. We are an organization. We are an institution – what Peter calls “a royal priesthood, a holy nation.” Rev. D.r Larry Hayward preaches on the twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Scripture lesson is Acts 1:12-17, 21-26, and is read by Rev. Whitney Fauntleroy.

Luke records the events immediately following the Ascension of our Lord. Using eyewitness testimony, Luke vividly details the death of Judas and the appointment of Matthias to replace him as the 12th Apostle. But why? Relaying the "facts" of a traitor's demise and naming his replacement, which is the only time we hear of him, does not seem to have much application to life in 2019. When we compare the apprehension of the disciples on Easter morning to the confidence and direction following the Ascension of Jesus, we begin to understand the importance of His resurrection in the lives of those He saved. Like Matthias, we are unknowns but vitally important to the mission of the Church to share the resurrection of Christ – even to the point of death.
There is so little in the text itself about "Joseph called Barsabbas, also known as Justus" that we are left to carefully reading the text for clues about him and then using our imagination and common sense to move him from being a stick figure to at least an etching in whom we might see some of our own characteristics and experiences under God. Larry Hayward preaches on Acts 1:12-17, 20-26. Summer Sermon Series: Ordinary People. It is in the loves and hates, the hopes and fears, the strides and stumbles of ordinary people that God is both known and active in the world and which is narrated in Scripture. This summer’s series will highlight four men and four women from the Bible and hold them before our eyes that we may observe what they experienced, what moved them, and how God may have been present to them.

How long would you wait? Acts 1:12-26 Keith Morrison
"Biblical leadership requires a pure heart." "When the church wanted to know who God had chosen to lead them...they looked to the heart." "We want to be a church where spiritual leadership is the priority and our leaders operate with transparency." "We want to be a place where our congregation is encouraging and praying those for those leaders."
After Jesus ascended into heaven, the church gathered and prayed waiting for the Holy Spirit. In preparing, they were lead to fulfill the Scripture and replace the the disciple Judas Iscariot in order to have a new witness share in the ministry of apostleship. In an analogous way, we need to devote ourselves to prayer, obeying God's Word and being witnesses.

After the Lord ascended the disciples headed back to Jerusalem to wait and after arriving at the upper room the disciples had the first church business meeting! Here we look at this meeting to understand how God meant for us to handle the business side of the church!
The empty field that Judas bought shows us the greatness of human evil and the persistence of divine love.

In this message, Dr. Brian Kinlaw reviews two important events documented in the book of Acts; the selection of a new Apostle and the selection of the initial seven church leaders who were assigned to aid the Apostles in the administration and growing of the 1st Century Church. He then poses the question, "what can we learn from these two events regarding the kind of vibrant leadership needed to lead a transformational church?" It is vitally important that leaders we put in place within the church walk with Jesus day by day; maintain a good reputation; are Spirit-led and wise and believe in (and allow themselves to be transformed by) the reality of Jesus' resurrection.
We will see in this passage that we need to be increasingly serious concerning times of sitting before the Lord, even for an extended amount of time, praying, reading His Word, waiting and listening.
