Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. (Hebrews 12:1-2a) Peer pressure is a thing. So is personal determination. The author of Hebrews draws on both, cheering us on to faith in the race of life. Of course, peer pressure and personal determination can also undercut faith when they run the wrong way. For instance, while there are many benefits of strong Christian institutions—there can also be drawbacks. A common story in the Christian schools is one where a group of friends pushes the limits of acceptable behaviour when it comes to bullying or partying. They look around at one another and encourage one another on: I won't tell if you don't tell. We're all good Christians here, and aren't Christians permitted to be strong, have fun, etc.? As one group begins to push the boundaries of what constitutes acceptable Christian character and behavior, others follow suit. This is a negative form of Christian witness: a witness that erodes character, perseverance, and faith among the community of believers. I ought to add that it does not just happen at school. Our personal determination can also flag. It is exhausting to fight for the good against the wrong, to take personal stands of integrity against issues, whether big or mundane, not to mention the quieter internal battles against sin and despair. Our resolve can be cut short in a thousand ways: some of us have strong internal critics that hamper our confidence in stepping forward in faith, others of us are worn out, grieving, or discouraged, others still are impacted by the seasonal blues. Great athletes tell us that endurance and perseverance in a long race is ultimately about the mental resolve to keep going and push through. There are many reasons that's hard to do, even more so when the peer pressure we feel invites us to consider giving up. Enter the book of Hebrews. Over chapter 11, we have been reminded that our lives participate in a much longer and larger story: the story of God in, through, and among his people. It is the story of Creation. The story of Able, Noah, and Abraham. The story of Sarah and Rahab. It is ultimately the story that culminates in the good news of Jesus—his birth, life, death, resurrection, and ascension. We await the end of the story at Jesus' second coming to set all things right and make all things new. But until then we participate in the story by living our own lives of faith. As we do, the writer invites us to listen to the cheers of those who have gone before us. We have a larger community than just those who surround us at school, work, or in our friend group. It is none less than Abraham and Sarah cheering us on from the crowd, together with all sorts of lesser known saints—perhaps even some of those that you have known from this life. Those dearly loved ones of ours who ran the race before them—faults, foibles, and faith all wrapped together. They cheer us on, encourage us, and continue to speak to us through their example of how to fight the good fight and finish the race. That's the kind of peer pressure we need—a positive pressure that carries us forward through hard times and hard choices of personal character and integrity that keeps Jesus ever in the fore. We are not to look at how difficult the race is, how loud the voices to give up and give in are, nor how limited our own resources and desire to keep going. Instead, we are to keep our head up and our eyes trained on Jesus. This, we are told, is enough. Because Jesus is not just the one we run to. No: he also run this race and by his help we are enabled to run it to. As you journey on, go with the blessing of God: Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep, equip you with everything good for doing his will, and may he work in us what is pleasing to him, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Today, as we continue in our sermon series, Why Pray?, we see how believers can be confident when we pray for God's protection. Because God keeps us by His grace in salvation, in His joy, and from the evil one. We don't have to live in fear because we have a Father who is more than able, and ultimately desires, to protect us. Listen as Pastor Kevin Pobursky shares our latest sermon, Knowing God's Protection, to help us see that we can run to God with all our requests because He is faithful.

If the Wright Brothers could have used AI to guide their decision making, it's almost certain they would never have gotten off the ground. That's because, points out Teppo Felin of Utah State University and Oxford, all the evidence said human flight was impossible. So how and why did the Wrights persevere? Felin explains that the human ability to ignore existing data and evidence is not only our Achilles heel, but also one of our superpowers. Topics include the problems inherent in modeling our brains after computers, and the value of not only data-driven prediction, but also belief-driven experimentation.

There are times when following the Lord's plan and purpose for our lives can be challenging and down right hard. The good news is, we don't have to do it alone or in our own strength! Knowing how to adjust our mindset and do a different take can help us persevere instead of losing heart.

Lise Deguire is an attractive woman. Her kind eyes belie what she has lived through. When Lise was four years old, her mother used a household solvent used to start a barbecue. It exploded, engulfing the entire porch in flames. Her mother ran through the fire and jumped in the lake to cool her burns. She left Lise standing in the midst of the inferno. Lise who was a beautiful, bubbly, child with blond curls suffered third degree burns over 65% of her body. The ensuing years would be round after round of brutal burn treatments and skin removal resulting in heavy scarring. Lise reflects back on her relationship with her mother and notes that: "She was not emotionally equipped to be a mother. She just wasn't. And some mothers aren't... One of the things I've learned since my book has come out is there is a lot of people who had mothers who were not very good at it." Lise describes her parents as “outrageously flawed, gifted, and iconoclastic parents.” And as such, they were often wrapped up in their own lives and drama. Lise had numerous experiences that would have stopped most people. Perhaps most traumatically, her beloved brother committed suicide. That is what ultimately led her to a life dedicated to making a difference in mental health. "I think it made me a better person. And I help a lot of people now." Coming Soon! The Book. Robin's story starts with 14 years of dealing with infertility. As an RN, Robin went on a surgical trip to the Dominican Republic. It was there she had an aha moment, that moved her from her angst over infertility into an adoption mindset. Robin and her husband would go onto adopt a two day old baby girl and three years later, a 5 day old little girl. Robin was in love with her children, but over the years, she started to sense some dis-ease. She finally had the opportunity to speak to another mother who had adopted some children, and that conversation blew her away. Both mothers were seeing issues that were identical, and they weren't the typical issues adolescents face. This sent Robin on a journey to better understand the adoptive process from numerous points of view. She interviewed birth moms, adoptive parents, adult adoptees, doctors, and therapists and wrote a book to encourage, educate, and equip adoptive parents as well as adult adoptees. This is a story about love, and how different people have different viewpoints. It's a must listen for all of us seeking to find clarity and truth in our situation. And it's an absolute must for anyone touched by adoption. #BumpInTheRoad #Adoption Coming Soon! The Book. From Uganda to American culture, this is a far ranging conversation with Charlie Hedges. Charlie and I are both on a quest for greater understanding and consciousness, and this conversation reflects that. It starts with Charlie's efforts with Wells of Water, a charity that provides clean water for rural Ugandan villages. Clean water changes everything for these villages. The women no longer spend hours a day trudging back and forth from a remote water source. The water is clean, and disease disappears. It means time for education. Charlie notes that: Everyone I meet in Uganda is a happy and grateful person. That happiness is a contrast with the trends we are seeing in the West where communities are disintegrating; people are increasingly isolated; drugs are rampant; and society has a distinctly material bent. Charlie speculates that "is the downside of the American dream." The American ethos is so future oriented, that today doesn't exist. That is exactly opposite of the rural mentality one finds in Uganda. Our conversation ranges from the life changing impact of local, clean water, to what it takes to live a meaningful life. What are our priorities? What matters most? While the answer may differ for each of us, the basic constructs are the same. Coming Soon! The Book. In this episode, I will be sharing an article written by Dick Kazan on the life difficulties of Thomas Edison. It was published in Kazan Today on August 2, 2011. The teaching tip that is offered by Kazan on Edison's life is Edison didn't let a lack of money, lack of formal education, deafness or the failure of an invention stop him. He persevered. Might perseverance make a difference in your life? One more attempt to get a job or a promotion? One more attempt to start a business or close a deal? How about another bold pursuit of your dreams? I am your host, Marci Nettles. I have had a lifetime of opportunities where I had the choice to Breakdown or Breakthrough. It is my hope this Podcast may become your light in the darkness, as you listen to the stories of people I consider “heroes.” Each one had a point where they too had to choose to either Breakdown or Breakthrough! Hustle Makes it Happen the podcast Season Finale is a HOT one featuring NFL player Delvin Breaux and his amazing story of perseverance!Delvin Breaux reached football's highest level, signing with his hometown Saints, after an unconventional rise. Playing for McDonogh 35, Breaux fractured his C4, C5 and C6 vertebrae during a kickoff return in a high school football game on October 27, 2006.Though many feared the worst, doctors found that Breaux was “neurologically fine”. As a highly recruited prep player, Breaux was supposed to make waves for the Tigers in Baton Rouge. Although LSU honored his scholarship, he was never medically cleared to play and he spent time as a player-coach within the program. Setting out on his own, Breaux looked for every opportunity to continue playing the game he loves. He played seasons for the Louisiana Bayou Vipers in the minor Gridiron Developmental Football League and the former New Orleans VooDoo of the AFL. His strong play in minor leagues landed him an opportunity with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in 2013, where he would spend the next two seasons, becoming an All-Star. Saints coach Sean Payton would soon after recruit Breaux for his NFL opportunity. After his first season with the Saints in 2015, Breaux finished his first year in the NFL with 45 tackles and 3 interceptions and was named the recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award. His time with the Saints would eventually come to an end two seasons later after suffering a broken fibula in 2016 and 2017, opening the door for his return to the CFL.
