Traditions of the Heart
Ever since sin entered the world, man has been attempting to subvert God's commandments. It's just in our nature. Instead of following what God says, we find clever ways to create traditions that benefit us. What's at the root of all of this? Jesus tells us that it's a heart issue. Join us Sunday at 10:30am as we discover what defiles us and how Jesus makes us clean!

When the Pharisees question Jesus on tradition, He proceeds to completely rewrite their understanding of what really matters to God. The Pharisees had added rules and regulations to God’s law and were intent on enforcing these man-made traditions on Jesus and His disciples. Jesus responds by calling them hypocrites! The Pharisees are hypocrites for two reasons: (1) their actions are merely external and do not come from their hearts, which are far from God; and (2) their teachings are not from God but reflect the tradition of men. What about us? Do we tend to focus on the external things in life, or are we aware of the state of our heart before God? Visit us online at: www.RenewalChurch.net

Traditions are deeply held habits and beliefs that we hold on to for guidance, comfort and remembrance of the good old days. Tradition becomes very dangerous when we ignore God's word and hurt others to keep it. You cannot posture as a believer but not have a lifestyle that backs it up. Jesus calls out the fakes and encourages true believers to be pure. Power is found in purity! Sermon Outline @ http://bible.com/events/48824933

Using the latest confrontation with the Pharisees and scribes, Jesus gets right to the heart of two important issues: the supremacy of truth over tradition and true righteousness over religious ritual. In our 21st century world, we need to examine our understanding of these same two areas.

Jesus Christ. 1st century Middle-Eastern man. He definitely existed. He definitely generated a lot of hype. But who exactly was he? What was he all about? What does he want from you and me? Learning more about Jesus might just change your life!
All of us realize deep down that there is something desperately wrong with the world. But the source of the problem may not be what we think. Jesus came to bring the only remedy to cleanse us.

We live in a culture of blame instead of taking responsibility for our sins. Jesus doesn't negate the importance of God's law, but is pointing to the fact that we need to change from the inside out. The warning for us is to not miss the point.

In the passage we read today, the Gospel writer Mark expresses a critique of Jewish ritual. Jesus, however, appears less concerned about the specific practices Mark is critiquing than with the intention and motivation that lie behind both the ritual and its critique—a focus more on the heart than the practice the heart produces. Larry Hayward preaches on Mark 7:1-8, 14-15, 21-23.
Do not let tradition replace doing what you know God wants you to do.
Pastor Canaan encourages us to humbly study to show ourselves approved and to test every truth-claim against the Word of God.

Among the great tragedies in Scripture are the Scribes and Pharisees, who, though teachers of the Law of God, seemed to be unable to recognize the living Word of God, even when He walked among them. So it Isn't really any surprise that these religious leaders would also have missed the point regarding so much of Moses' writings. Pastor Phil explains as we join him in Mark chapter 7.
External observances do not please God, only a changed heart.

In one of the most revolutionary passages in the Bible, Jesus exposes the hypocrisy of the religious elite, while laying out the hope of His Kingdom found in true purity and holiness... an inside out change.

We believe that we are called of God to teach the Bible line upon line and to equip the members of our church to love God and serve Him in a way that demonstrates His love to people.

The Pharisees think they can confront Jesus about the lack of traditional washing by His disciples, but instead Jesus turns it into a confronting of the hypocrisy of the Pharisees for only caring about the traditions of men over and above obedience to God's Word. Pastor Steve applies the opening scene of Mark chapter 7 to our own potential to get stuck in traditions and traditionalism, potentially over and above the clear guidance of scripture.

Using the scripture concerning following the arcane rules, Pastor John speaks about how they can be the danger within.
Jesus lines up the Pharisees and exposes the hypocrisy in their traditions and customs. His assessment of their approach helps us to see how we utilise many of the same techniques.

Apologies for the poor sound quality. It is not food or failure to wash that makes a person spiritually unclean, but rather what is in the heart.
I am intrigued by the overwhelming evidence of humanity that we know something is not right between us and God; and religion is our attempt to fix it. And yes, people with a religion mentality have at times kidnapped Christianity. It’s our tendency to depend on religion over a relationship with Jesus. Today we hear Jesus confront that reality. Turn with me to Mark 7:1-23.
