Free flight tends to attract some rather big personalities to its crutches. And among its most interesting and passionate devotees is American pilot and pioneer Chuck Smith. Chuck learned back east on the dunes in the US with his brother in the late 80's under the tutelage of climbing legend John Bouchard. From there the search for airtime and the love of the flying community brought him all over the world. The people he's impacted or been impacted by is an impressive rolodex of the history of flying.
In this episode of the Expositors Collective podcast, Mike Neglia interviews David Jackman about his preaching journey and insights from his book Proclaiming the Word. Jackman recounts his early preaching experiences and the influence of mentors like J.I. Packer and Alec Motyer. He emphasizes the balance of hard work and dependence on the Holy Spirit, stressing the importance of thorough sermon preparation. Drawing on the impact of influential figures like John Stott and Chuck Smith, Jackman discusses the growth and challenges of expository preaching and the need for biblically centered sermons. David Jackman shares practical insights on staying "on the line of the text," ensuring that Scripture remains central, and contrasts this approach with preaching styles that either add to or subtract from the Bible. The discussion also touches on Chuck Smith's and Stott's commitment to letting the Bible speak for itself. Jackman discusses the global spread of expository preaching and its ongoing relevance in addressing cultural challenges. Biography: David Jackman, born in 1942, studied at Downing College, Cambridge, and completed theological training under J.I. Packer and Alec Motyer at Trinity College, Bristol. He served as senior minister at Above Bar Church in Southampton before founding the Cornhill Training Course in 1991 under Dick Lucas, training evangelical preachers in exegesis and communication. Jackman has also written several expository works and served as president of The Proclamation Trust. He currently teaches at Oak Hill Theological College and continues to contribute to evangelical preaching through books and conferences. Co-hosts Anne Chappelle and David Faulkner speak with William J. Sullivan, PhD, Showalter Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology and Professor of Microbiology & Immunology with the Indiana University School of Medicine, about toxic parasites lying dormant in your brain and the power and importance of science communication.About the GuestBill Sullivan, PhD, has been studying the intracellular parasite Toxoplasma gondii since he was a graduate student in the laboratory of Dr. David Roos at the University of Pennsylvania in 1994. He completed postdoctoral fellowships with Dr. Chuck Smith at ELANCO (a division of Eli Lilly, Co.) and Dr. Sherry Queener at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He became an Assistant Professor at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 2003. Dr. Sullivan is now the Showalter Professor of Pharmacology & Toxicology and Microbiology & Immunology at the Indiana University School of Medicine.Dr. Sullivan's lab studies cellular signaling and the regulation of gene expression in a fascinating protozoan parasite called Toxoplasma gondii. Toxoplasma causes congenital birth defects as well as opportunistic infection in HIV/AIDS, cancer chemotherapy, and heart transplant patients. There is also emerging evidence that this parasitic infection may be linked to neurological disorders, such as schizophrenia and behavior modification. While the acute stage of toxoplasmosis can be treated, the ability of the parasite to convert into latent tissue cysts prevents eradication of the infection from the patient. Unfortunately, if immunity wanes, the patient can relapse and suffer additional episodes of life-threatening acute infection. Additionally, toxoplasma is a serious threat to some wildlife and livestock.Send SOT thoughts on the episodes, ideas for future topics, and more.

Fighting back against spiritual resistance!
On our website: https://www.thebereancall.org/content/question-i-think-your-interpretation-daniel-124-incorrectMore question and answer: https://www.thebereancall.org/questionanswerQuestion: My husband and I just finished watching the video that you appeared in with Chuck Missler and Chuck Smith called “Countdown to Eternity” (see—https://bit.ly/3yvMrmb). I do have a question about a scripture you all quoted and expounded upon: “Many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase” (Dn 12:4b). You presented the view of travel and human knowledge exploding in the last days. But when I studied it, I find that is not what that verse is saying at all! It appears that Daniel is saying that many will go back and forth through the prophets (the books of the Bible, especially the prophetic passages), and knowledge of prophetic events and things to come will increase. This apparently wrong interpretation of Daniel 12:4b reminds me of the days when “everyone” seemed to be teaching that Matthew 24:40-41 referred to people “taken” in the Rapture, but further study shows this is about Tribulation times and they are “taken” in judgment, not in the Rapture. Big Idea: Is “I don't get you people” a compliment? The Church is…part of a community, called out from sin and into transparent relationships for the purpose of making Jesus famous in their city. I. Light and darkness can't exist together. Matthew 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven. II. "It's not something to explain. It's something to be experienced." - Chuck Smith 2 Corinthians 5:20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us. We plead on Christ's behalf, “Be reconciled to God.” III. A change of heart makes a Christian different from anyone else in the world. Proverbs 4:23-24 Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life. Don't let your mouth speak dishonestly, and don't let your lips talk deviously. Next Steps: Believe: I want to become part of Jesus's church today. Become: I will live different this week. Be Sent: I will shine Jesus's glory this week. Group Discussion Questions: How can God's people shine their light if they're only around other Christians? Have you ever known someone who surprised you when they said they also shared your faith? What value did the church bring to your community last month? How exactly was your life different from that of a non-believer last week? What actions set Jesus's people apart at work? What would you say to a friend who doesn't want to make Jesus famous in their community? Ask the Holy Spirit to point you to a community need this week.
