In which the team try to pin down the essence of genre: what differentiates it from a style; who makes them and how it affects our reading experience. We go on to discuss the benefits and problems with blurring those boundaries. Actually, for the first fifteen minutes we try to stop Mattie playing SW:TOR and attempt to discuss a series of books that none of us has actually read - but then we get on topic. Honestly. The conversation was to have gone on for a good twenty minutes longer but technical difficulties plagued us in the latter part of the episode. On the plus side, all being well you will be hearing a little more from Scrolls 'somewhere' on the Geek Syndicate Network this month.Genre Blends that we recommend, but didn't have opportunity to discuss properly (or at all in some cases) include Artemis Fowl, the 'Jon Shannow' books, The 'Pax Britannia' series, Coraline, The 'Merrily Watson' series, 'The Tales Of The Otori' series, The Fifth Child, The 'Shadows Of The Apt' series, and Cloud Atlas. You should google them if they are unfamiliar to you, track down copies and read them. I would also heartilly recommend reading a short story by William Hope Hodgeson called The Derelict. It's about a 'ghost' sailing ship, yet has an old-world sci-fi vibe more in line with The Thing than The Fog. You can read it for free online but I particularly enjoyed the full audio dramatisation from Audio Comics in their Horrorscopes series. You should definitely give some of those a listen. As a hobby, both Phil and Dion have been entering a Flash Fiction competition on the writer Lily Childs' blog. These are stories of no more than 100 words, so easy to flick through, tricky to write. As a tenuous link to encourage people to go take a look (and potentially join in) I offer you my own little genre blender 'Bete Noir.' We post our stories in the comments section, so you'll need to scrolls down the page to find it.Finally, regarding Jeffrey Kacirk's Forgotten English calendar mentioned near the beginning of the podcast. The words I was supposed to fit in to conversation was 'Good Man's Croft.' You won't hear me getting it into conversation for technical reasons that I won't bore you with. The episode as a whole, though, may be considered to be a practical modern-day demonstration of the phrase.Hopefully we'll meet some of you lovely people at the SFX Weekender in February. Until then, keep reading.

This episode Scrolls flips over the page to see things from the other side in terms of starting out as a writer. Acting as a companion piece to the Author Interviews recorded at the SFX Weekender we've pulled together three authors who have taken non-traditional approaches to getting their fiction out into the public domain.Joining Phil and Clover in a virtual round-table discussion of their experiences, and the pros and cons of these alternative avenues are:- Barry Nugent (Shadowy Godfather of the Geek Syndicate and author of Fallen Heroes, self published through Lulu's print-on-demand service)Alex Keller (Author of pre-teen steampunk novels Haywired and Rewired, printed by small-press publisherMogzilla) andMark Bell (Author of folk horror novel Binder of Bone, Keeper of Corn which he has published exclusively as an e-book).Here are some additional links to items mentioned in the episode that may be of interest to you:Barry's twitter and Fallen Heroes, the comic http://fallenheroescomicdotcom.wordpress.com/Alex's twitter and website http://alexkelleruk.tumblr.com/ (although I believe a Wordpress blog is in the offing soon)Mark's blog http://sirswithinswift.blogspot.com/Normal Service - i.e. blather, banter and bullshit about books - resumes soon in the next episode 'Life, the Multiverse and Everything.'Keep reading.
Have aspirations of Starting Out as writer? Want to hear the experiences of veterans and newly established authors? Look no further.Seizing the unique opportunity provided by the SFX Weekender this year, we collected an array of interviews from authors at various stages of their careers for your aural delectation. We probe into achieving a publishable standard through proof-readers and tinkering, the benefits (and not) of Agents, and dealing with rejection; gleaning insights along the way on their writing and editorial processes and the mysterious mechanics of the publishing world.Huge thanks to the contributing authors for their time and their trust. If you have enjoyed their work, or if you would like to ask them any follow up questions having heard these interviews, please post messages at the following sites:Joe Abercrombie - http://www.joeabercrombie.com/Scott Andrews - http://www.eclectica.info/Jonathan Green - http://www.jonathangreenauthor.blogspot.com/Peter F Hamilton - http://theunisphere.com/James Lovegrove - http://www.jameslovegrove.com/Andy Remic - http://www.andyremic.com/Adrian Tchaikovsky - http://shadowsoftheapt.com/Authors by and large get very little direct feedback from their readers, so make their day and show them your love (and if you've enjoyed this episode of Scrolls, for goodness sake let them know that as well. It will increase the likelihood of them letting the bald-nutter-with-the-tiny-microphone interview them again in future.)We will be recording Part 2 in early March, with the Scrolls team discussing topics spinning off from these interviews. If you have anything occur to you that you'd like us to specifically discuss please contact us in the usual manner tweeting @scrollscast, posting on the forums at www.gsforums.co.uk or e-mailing us atscrolls@hotmail.co.ukKeep writing. In which the most abominable, darkest, nastiest, blackest, vilest, most repellant, disgusting and disgraceful podcasters return to chat about baddies. Duh! Technically we take a shifty at what makes for a good villain and how they've changed through the years, then we run amok trying to pin down all the different types and sub-types. In reality of course, we ramble off topic, fudge our lines and make things about as difficult for an editor as you can hope to imagine. It was all them, yer honour. Honest... Out of pure spite I've left a c-bomb in so you can all hear what a filthy brute Mattie is in real life. For shame! I could list out all the books and occasional films mentioned so you know what you're getting into, but where would be the fun in that? Discover what weird and random directions our twisted talk takes us by downloading this episode and injecting us... into your brains! You can send your outraged tweets to us @Scrollscast or @Dion_Scrolls Alternatively you can send your splenetic e-mails to us at scrolls@hotmail.co.uk or... simply assault us physically at the SFX Weekender on the first weekend of February. If your rage is aimed solely at me (Dion) I can also be punched at the Cardiff International Comics Expo on 26th Feb.
