Cameron-Brooks
A Post-Military Career in Operations. What is it like? (E209)

Cameron-Brooks

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 12, 2024

What does a post-military career in Operations look like? In today's fast-paced and competitive business landscape, companies must find ways to optimize their operations, minimize costs, and meet customer expectations more effectively. The competitive advantage for any company is getting the right product, to the right customer, for the right price, at the right time by using the most cost-effective means. In this episode, we're fortunate to enough to bring back four former JMO's and Cameron-Brooks Alumni who are leading in the Operations and Supply Chain Management Career Fields to discuss their experiences, common misconceptions, and concepts like the integrated supply chain and why it is essential for sustainable growth and gaining the competitive advantage. What is Operations and Supply Chain Management? The Operations Career Field encompasses all activities in Supply Chain Management and involves leading teams of people in: Inventory Management, Warehousing, Distribution Management, Logistics, Transportation, Procurement, and customer service. Supply Chain Management is the management of the flow of goods and services and includes all processes that transform raw materials into final products. It involves the active streamlining of a business's supply-side activities to maximize customer value and earn the edge in the marketplace. Companies are always looking to become more efficient and economical by analyzing data, conducting trend analysis, finding ways to improving and extend their asset's (i.e. their fleets of vehicles: maintenance, etc.). The Integrated Supply Chain? An integrated supply chain is the cohesive network that links all components of the supply chain—from raw material suppliers and manufacturers to warehouses, distributors, and retailers—into a single, streamlined system. Whether a company's supply chain is vertically integrated, or horizontally integrated, the goal remains the same: create a more unified, agile, and efficient supply chain that can respond swiftly to market demands and disruptions. You'll hear four Cameron-Brooks alumni talk about their post-military careers in Operations, some common misconceptions, and what a day in the life is like. You will meet: Danny Baker, Army Captain, launched his career with Catalent Biopharmaceutical. Staci Lynch, Army Major, launch her career with Love's Travel Stops. Beau Hughes, Army Captain, launched his career with HF Sinclair Corporation. Bobby Burns, Army Captain, launched his career with Excelitas Technologies Corporation. Strong leadership is essential for companies managing operations and integrated supply chains due to the complex, dynamic nature of these systems. These four individuals and many other Cameron-Brooks alumni are thriving in this career field. Their ability to drive the strategic vision, make decisions, collaborate and communicate effectively, motivate and empower teams, navigate uncertainty and manage risks, all while maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction has allowed them to establish a solid resume block(s) and be successful in their first couple years in Business. Companies are always evaluating their leadership depth and who is at the helm of their operations as they know they are better equipped to enhance efficiency, foster resilience, and achieve long-term success in competitive markets. Of course, if you want to know more about how Cameron-Brooks can help you reach your personal and professional goals, or if a post-military career in Operations might be the right fit for you, give me a call or email me directly below. If you want to learn more on your own time, you can visit our website, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Best of success, Brock Dudley || bdudley@cameron-brooks.com || (210) 874-1495

We are happy to finally have Kieran Maguire (@kieranmaguire) from the Price of Football podcast on the show. Even though he only a few miles up the road in Philadelphia last week, this episode was a Trans-Atlantic recording, done both late night and early morning. While his teaching day job brought him to the States, he managed to get to see his Brighton and Hove Albion squad take on Chelsea in one of this year's Premier League pre-season matches taking place here. We started off discussing how he found the atmosphere of the match, both on- and off-pitch, desegregated crowds and exorbitant concession prices. That branched out into a general chat about football in England and the growth of MLS, the thorny topic of American ownership of British teams and the old chestnut, promotion and relegation. We also talked about some recent US-related topics that had come up on the Price of Football that related to US sports, like public salaries and agents' fees. Believe it or not, I wanted to keep the football chat to a minimum, but it was the first half of the episode. After that, we talked about Kieran's other great cultural love, music, particularly the 70s and 80s bands in what some call the Second British Invasion. We discuss how the Manchester music scene in the early 80s influenced where he went to university and our mutual love for bands like New Order and Joy Division, OMB, the Smiths and the Cure. Also, some love for the New Music Express, Danny Kelly and Danny Baker, the intimacy of podcasts vs modern radio and more. We wrap up with some video game chat. Kieran and co-host (and former podcast guest) Kevin Day were both playing the new Zelda game, Tears of the Kingdom. We talked about how he has found the game so far, comparing it to Breath of the Wild, using video games as decompression time and more. We had hoped to do a separate show with Kevin and pair them together, but scheduling issues kept that from happening. Hopefully, Kevin will be on before or in conjunction with the next Price of Football book, Unfit and Improper Persons, where the guys discuss how to start a local pub team and build it all the way up to Champions League success and what the financial realities are in such an endeavor. And yes, we did talk about how an unlikely Odd Couple of a Crystal Palace supporting comedian and Brighton supporting academic have managed to produce a successful podcast.

Celebrating with Alex and FraRepublicans don't say thank you often enough to each other. Fra McCann and Alex Maskey are 50 year activists. That is they have both been involved in the struggle for over 50 years. The two of them stepped down from the Assembly two years ago. Fra was replaced by Aisling Reilly and Alex by Danny Baker. Alex still remains the Ceann Comhairle – Speaker of the Assembly – until such times as the DUP agree to elect a new Speaker.Last Friday evening several hundred family, friends and comrades of both men came together to celebrate their lives of activism. They were also interviewed by Joe Austin about their experience of community activism, struggle, imprisonment and elected politics. Prison Book Ban liftedLast week I wrote a piece about books and the prison system here. That literary ramble through our penal institutions was triggered by news that some books by republicans are banned from the prisons here. Pat Sheehan MLA, a former prisoner and hungerstriker, wrote to the prison authorities. He said: “Twenty-five years after the signing of the Good Friday Agreement I find it incomprehensible that republican literature should still be censored in this way. I thought those days were long behind us. The Irish republican analysis of our history is as valid as any other, and attempts to censor that analysis only serve to indulge the view that the prison service is politically partisan.” Brendan BehanLast week, 9 February, marked the centenary of the birth of Brendan Behan. Behan was a hugely influential writer whose books were rooted in his working class experience and republicanism. His parents, Stephen Behan and Kathleen Kearney, were republicans. His mother's brother - Peadar Ó Cearnaigh – was a veteran of the 1916 Rising and wrote The Soldier's Song (Amhrán na bhFiann). At the age of eight Brendan joined the Fianna. Later he joined the IRA. In December 1939 he was dispatched to Liverpool to identify possible targets for the then bombing campaign. In his eagerness he brought with him explosives he had personally prepared. He was arrested. Because he was aged 16 Behan was sentenced to three years in a juvenile centre. Almost 20 years later that story was told in Borstal Boy. The book was banned in the South.

Actor, writer and director Lee Moone joins Tyler this week to talk about the history of Spike Milligan's The Phantom Raspberry Blower Of Old London Town and how he brought it to the stage in 2015 with 'Guest Phantoms' Jon Culshaw, Danny Baker and John Challis. Following on from last week's chat with Joel Morris, Lee and Tyler look at the genesis of the original script and dig a bit deeper into its intended purpose: to be a one hour television special for Milligan, Sellers and Secombe that never came off. They talk about its subsequent seventies versions with Ronnie Barker solo and then, more famously, as part of The Two Ronnies. Lee tells Tyler how challenging it was adapting the script for the stage production. The biggest obstacle to its success would have been the non-cooperation of Norma Farnes, Milligan's agent, but thankfully she was supportive of the project and gave it her blessing. A major turning point was enlisting the services of Dirk Maggs as director and with him on board it all began to come together. Lee explains how it could have gone on with an extended series of shows but various factors conspired to prevent this happening - however, Lee is hoping to bring the show back. It's a great conversation with a really interesting guy and we wish Lee all the best in his endeavours to revive the show and keep alive the memory of The Phantom Raspberry Blower Of Old London Town!

I'm talking to one of my heroes on this episode. And one of the voices that introduced me to indie music, and in turn someone who set me up for the life I've lived since my early teenage years. If you're of an age – my age – broadcaster, TV presenter and DJ, and a whole lot more besides, Gary Crowley, was the UK's voice of indie for a time, and since he's put his name to an excellent new compilation record – Gary Crowley's Indie 90s Playback, a 3CD set that takes in curios and rarities from the realms of Britpop, Madchester, Baggy, Shoegazing, Alt. rock, Trip Hop, Big Beat, and a whole lot more besides, I thought it was about time I got him on the podcast. And we go deep – on Gary's early days making fanzines, his teenage encounters with The Clash, his days at Decca Records, breaking into radio at Capital, replacing Danny Baker on the receptionists desk at my beloved NME… and we'd have gone even longer if we hadn't ran out of time. Which means there'll almost certainly be a second episode, sometime in the New Year. We ran out of time before we could get into The Beat, XFM and breaking the news of Princess Diana's death to a generation of indie kids. Keep your ears pealed for that. But for now, I hope you enjoy this episode… Join the Substack!
