Their very first attempt at cosplay was at their nephew's 5th birthday party. The theme? Superheroes! Very funny story, they tell it this week. Over the years, they've become not just partners in life but in their shared passions—whether it's moderating panels, guesting on podcasts, or good ol fashioned toy hunting. They've grown into a team that embodies what it means to live and love in the world of comics and cosplay. Growing up as a bi-racial kid to a dad from Mexico and a mom from the American South sounds like a plot of a sitcom. One that Gabriel Cruz has the wit, sharpness, creativity, and voice to star in. He was inspired by his marine biologist grandfather to consider a career working with animals, but the math of it all pointed him in a more creative direction. His parents did not have access to education, which meant Gabriel had to navigate the unwritten rules of academia on his own. Listen to the story of how the kid with a 2.9 GPA earned his PhD and became Assistant Professor of Media Studies in the department of Mass Communication at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. Dr. Cruz shares some of his research on intersectional critical race analysis of popular culture, especially superhero narratives. His work has appeared in the academic periodicals Journal of Alternative and Community Media and Howard Journal of Communications, as well as in the edited volumes such as Black Panther: Afrofuturism, Gender, Identity, and the Re-Making of Blackness. His forthcoming book Latinidad, Identity Formation, and the Mass Media Landscape: Constructing Pocho Villa addresses how mass media has engaged with the subject of Latinx identity in the United States. Have you heard of NukuDo, the cybersecurity training program located at Geekdom? Today's guest is Michael Blair, an entrepreneur and NukuDo's Managing Director. NukuDo pays its enrolled students $4,000 a month during their half year or so of training. Blair is joined by Jose Herrera, a member of NukuDo's first cohort.  Listen as we discuss how NukuDo came to be, and how their training program is sourcing exciting new talent to enter the cybersecurity workforce in San Antonio and beyond.     

7 The Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around him. 2 They observed that some of his disciples were eating bread with unclean—that is, unwashed—hands. 3 (For the Pharisees and all the Jews do not eat unless they give their hands a ceremonial washing, keeping the tradition of the elders. 4 When they come from the marketplace, they do not eat unless they have washed. And there are many other customs they have received and keep, like the washing of cups, pitchers, kettles, and dining couches.) 5 So the Pharisees and the scribes asked him, “Why don't your disciples live[b] according to the tradition of the elders, instead of eating bread with ceremonially unclean hands?” 6 He answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly about you hypocrites, as it is written: This people honors me with their lips,but their heart is far from me.7 They worship me in vain,teaching as doctrines human commands. 8 Abandoning the command of God, you hold on to human tradition.” 9 He also said to them, “You have a fine way of invalidating God's command in order to set up your tradition! 10 For Moses said: Honor your father and your mother; and Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death. 11 But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or mother: Whatever benefit you might have received from me is corban'” (that is, an offering devoted to God), 12 “you no longer let him do anything for his father or mother. 13 You nullify the word of God by your tradition that you have handed down. And you do many other similar things.” 14 Summoning the crowd again, he told them, “Listen to me, all of you, and understand: 15 Nothing that goes into a person from outside can defile him but the things that come out of a person are what defile him.” 17 When he went into the house away from the crowd, his disciples asked him about the parable. 18 He said to them, “Are you also as lacking in understanding? Don't you realize that nothing going into a person from the outside can defile him? 19 For it doesn't go into his heart but into the stomach and is eliminated” (thus he declared all foods clean). 20 And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. 21 For from within, out of people's hearts, come evil thoughts, sexual immoralities, thefts, murders, 22 adulteries, greed, evil actions, deceit, self-indulgence, envy,[j] slander, pride, and foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within and defile a person.” Mark 7:1-23 (CSB)

San Antonio entrepreneurs and startups often find themselves meeting with Cat Dizon, the chief operating officer at venture capital firm Active Capital and the chairwoman of the Geekdom board. The former senior Rackspace executive is the gatekeeper to San Antonio's leading seed fund, and is always on the lookout for young, promising businesses.  

There are three members of the Ghost Patrol, the feature of this week's Jay's Regrettable Segment, but only 2 Guys in the studio today.  Jay and Robbie were ghosted by Art.   But they mustered up the courage and the words to talk about Oscar and all his little statuettes.  Geekdom did fairly well this year- at least in the nominee category - with Indiana Jones, Guardians of the Galaxy, and the Spiderverse getting some love.  Thank goodness for Godzilla, right?   Geekdom of the weekdom revealed that the Rogue Squadron may not be lost after all, Nolan is planning his next Oscar, and Austrian starlets know how to take down a U-boat.  See what happens when Art leaves?  Don't leave till you've listened.
