From the outside, M&A can seem like a clean transaction – a new parent company, a logo change, a cheerful announcement. But inside? The reality is messier. Integration. Culture clashes. Reporting headaches. And a long list of decisions that determine whether the deal actually works.Dom Hawes has lived both sides. After his own agency was acquired (badly), he went on to build Selbey Anderson – a marketing services group backed by private equity, designed from day one to scale through M&A.In just 30 months, he led the acquisition of 11 agencies, growing the group to £22M in revenue. In this episode, he pulls back the curtain on how that actually happens – and what too many people get wrong. Here's what we dive into:Why leadership – not just profit – is the #1 factor Dom looks for in an acquisitionThe red flags that make him walk away (including founders who say “I'm not a numbers person”)What makes integration hard – and how to avoid derailing moraleThe systems decision Dom regrets – and how it made integration and reporting harder later onHow to be “sale-ready” in today's tougher marketWhether you're looking to sell or simply sharpen up your ops, this one's a must-listen.Additional Resources:Follow Dom Hawes on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/dominichawes/ Check out Selby Anderson: https://selbeyanderson.com/ Follow Harv on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/harvnagra/ Get the key takeaways from the podcast in your inbox. Celene Hawkins is the new Colorado River Program Director for The Nature Conservancy, stepping into the role after years of impactful work in tribal water policy and place-based conservation across the basin. She's taking the baton from Taylor Hawes, who led the program for nearly 17 years and is now serving as the Colorado River Program's Special Advisor. It's a leadership transition at a critical moment for the Colorado River, and in this episode, I was lucky to sit down with both of them in person to talk through the handoff—what's changing, what's staying the same, and what the future of the river might look like. This is both Celene and Taylor's second time on the podcast, and we cover a lot of ground. We talk about the ongoing negotiations over new operating guidelines for the river—what's on the table, why the stakes are so high, and what happens if the basin states can't come to an agreement. We dig into tribal involvement—how things are (slowly) changing after decades of exclusion, and why stronger tribal participation is essential to any long-term solutions. We also explore how conservation groups are bringing new ideas, resources, and partnerships to the table, from modeling future scenarios to piloting creative water-sharing and resilience strategies across the West. And beyond the policy, we talk about what it actually takes to lead in a time of uncertainty—how to stay grounded, keep teams motivated, and maintain momentum when the challenges feel overwhelming. As always, Taylor and Celene bring a clear-eyed sense of purpose and a refreshing mix of realism and optimism to the conversation. We're releasing this episode just ahead of Colorado River Day, which falls on July 25th. So if you care about the West, public lands, rivers, or just want to better understand one of the most important water and conservation challenges in North America, this is a great place to start. Thanks for listening, I hope you enjoy! --- Celene Hawkins Taylor Hawes Announcement of Celene's new role as Director TNC's Colorado River Program Full episode notes and links: https://mountainandprairie.com/celene-taylor/ --- This episode is brought to you in partnership with the Colorado chapter of The Nature Conservancy and TNC chapters throughout the Western United States. Voice Of GO(r)D is very happy for the return of the finest investigative journalist in the world of trucking and freight, Clarissa Hawes. Over two decades of writing at both LandLine Magazine, the official media channel of OOIDA, and at FreightWaves, Clarissa has looked deeply into various issues and pathologies within trucking and has done a damn good job in reporting on them. Those who have been reading my Substack and articles for various publications will have read Clarissa's work, as I have cited her often.Clarissa fills us in on her career in journalism, and we dive into some of her more recent beats, including the abuse of migrants in trucking and her being the Bad News Bear of the FreightWaves “Layoffs and Bankruptcies” section, amongst many other threads she has pulled at over the years.Clarissa is now working on her own, but you can find an archive of her work at FreightWaves here - https://www.freightwaves.com/news/author/clarissahawesYou can find Clarissa at both Twitter and LinkedIn -https://x.com/cage_writerhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/clarissa-hawes-60a1b012a/If you've got a hot tip or a lead on a story for her - clarissahawes@gmail.comAnd in case you missed it, Clarissa appeared on the show back in August 2023 in a roundtable discussion on fighting freight fraud with Justin Martin, Mike Lombard, and Paul-Bernard Jaroslawski of FreightCaviar -https://autonomoustruckers.substack.com/p/avoiding-freight-scammers-a-logisticsQuestions, comments, suggestions, corrections and Hate Mail are welcomed and encouraged - gordilocks@protonmail.comI'm writing a book on the fate of the North American trucker in 2025 -https://autonomoustruckers.substack.com/p/book-project-announcement-and-a-major

...in which we delve into a remarkable oral history archive to paint a long-view picture of the ever-changing farmed landscape of the Westmorland Dales. In the company of local-born John Hastwell and project officer Amanda Walters, we listen to farmers past and present as they discuss the hard-graft reality of farming the Westmorland Dales, the northern Howgills and the Orton Fells. Looking back to the inter-War years – long before the arrival of phones and electricity in remote valleys – we hear crystal-clear memories (in beautiful accents) of life before mechanisation, when fell ponies and draft horses pulled sleds and trailers; and when 400+ farms in the area kept dairy herds. Proceeding to the arrival of the first Little Grey Fergie, we reflect on the joys and frustrations of hay-making, and the long hours worked by farm children. Turning to the social context of farm lives and loves, we hear about the importance of church; of the mart; and of the dances and seaside trips that bound scattered communities. Reflecting on the priceless value of wildflower meadows and the demise of dairy in Ravenstonedale, we close by asking 'What's next?' for the farms of the Dales, and discover that one model may be a 'back to basics' approach inspired by our farming forebears. The Westmorland Dales' 'Our Common Heritage' oral history project was inspired by Friends of the Lake District, which owns Little Asby Common in the heart of the Westmorland Dales. It was one of many projects delivered through the Westmorland Dales Landscape Partnership, led by Friends of the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority. Full interviews can be accessed at Cumbria Archives in Kendal and the Dales Countryside Museum in Hawes.
