THE Sales Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
Can You Stimulate The Buyer Greed Gland In Japan?

THE Sales Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan

Play Episode Listen Later May 5, 2026 13:56

Selling in Japan is not about pushing personal gain in a loud, Western-style way. It is about uncovering what success means to the buyer, then linking your solution to that motivation with care, timing, and respect. That distinction matters because Japanese buyers often express self-interest differently from buyers in the US, Australia, or parts of Europe. In Western firms, an executive may openly say a successful project means promotion, bonus upside, or career protection. In Japan, especially in larger firms, the answer is more likely to centre on the team, the division, or the company as a whole. That does not mean personal motivation is absent. It means it is expressed through a different cultural lens. Smart salespeople do not force a Western script. They adapt the language, keep the trust intact, and connect their solution to whatever the buyer says matters most. Why is trust such a critical first step in Japanese sales? Trust matters first because buyers in Japan will not easily reveal problems, failure points, or internal barriers to someone they do not trust. Before you can diagnose need, you must earn the right to ask. That is especially important because the sales process can feel intrusive. A salesperson may barely know the buyer, yet quickly start asking about corporate struggles, stalled progress, or underperformance. In any market that can feel bold, but in Japan it can feel particularly confronting if the permission stage is skipped. That is why experienced sellers explain who they are, what they do, where they have helped similar firms, and then ask for permission to go deeper. A simple phrase like asking whether they may pose a few questions can lower resistance and increase cooperation. In consultative selling, permission is not a formality. It is a gateway to useful information. Do now: Slow down the first meeting and earn the right to ask before diving into business pain. Mini-summary: In Japan, trust and permission are not optional extras; they are the foundation of discovery. Why is asking about personal motivation so sensitive in Japan? It is sensitive because direct talk about personal reward can feel awkward, unfamiliar, or culturally out of place in many Japanese business settings. The buyer may not be used to linking project success to openly stated self-interest. That is one of the biggest differences between Japan and more individualistic corporate cultures. In many Western companies, a buyer may readily say that success means a bonus, a promotion, or protection from criticism. In Japan, especially in traditional or larger organisations, promotion often has a weaker direct connection to individual project performance. Bonus structures may also be perceived less as performance windfalls and more as expected compensation patterns. So when a seller asks, "What would success mean for you personally?", the buyer may hesitate or seem confused. The issue is not that the question is wrong. The issue is that the language must be handled with far greater subtlety. Do now: Ask about what success would mean, but be ready for group-oriented answers rather than individual ambition. Mini-summary: Japanese buyers may express motivation collectively, even when personal stakes are quietly present. What kind of answers do Japanese buyers usually give? Japanese buyers often answer in terms of team benefit, company satisfaction, or group harmony rather than individual reward. That response is culturally consistent and still highly useful for the salesperson. A buyer may say the team will be pleased, the department will benefit, or everyone will feel satisfied if the project succeeds. From a Western viewpoint, that may sound indirect or vague. From a Japanese business perspective, it can be entirely natural. The salesperson's job is not to judge the answer. The job is to capture it and use it later. Whether the motivation is framed as personal advancement, group success, or organisational harmony, it still provides a key emotional link for the presentation phase. The real commercial insight is that motivation does not need to be selfish to be powerful. It only needs to be real enough that the buyer recognises it as meaningful. Do now: Listen for how the buyer defines success, not how you expected them to define it. Mini-summary: Group-framed motivation is still motivation, and it can be just as persuasive in the sale. Why is silence so important after asking a difficult sales question? Silence matters because tension often produces the answer you need, while premature talking lets the buyer escape. After a sensitive question, the salesperson must resist the urge to rescue the moment. This is a discipline many sellers struggle with. When the room goes quiet, especially after a question about personal stakes or organisational problems, the instinct is to fill the gap. That is usually a mistake. In Japan, where pauses and careful responses are more common, silence can be especially productive if handled confidently. The buyer is thinking. They are deciding how to respond. If a salesperson or colleague jumps in too early, the tension evaporates and the buyer may retreat into safe, non-committal language. That can cost valuable insight and weaken the deal. Silence is not dead air. It is working time for the buyer's brain. Do now: After asking a hard question, count silently before saying anything else. Mini-summary: Controlled silence creates space for honest answers and stronger discovery. How should you use buyer motivation in the proposal meeting? You should use it early in the presentation to show that your solution serves both the company's needs and the buyer's own definition of success. That creates a stronger emotional and commercial case. In Japan, the formal proposal often comes in a second meeting. This is where many salespeople jump straight into features, process, and technical detail. Those things matter, but the stronger move is to begin with a summary statement that connects the proposed solution to the buyer's previously stated motivation. If the buyer said success would help the team, then say the solution will help deliver that team outcome. If they hinted at smoother internal performance or stronger departmental results, bring that back explicitly. This shows that you listened, remembered, and shaped the proposal accordingly. It also tells the buyer that your solution is not generic. It is aligned with what they told you matters. Do now: Open your proposal by linking the solution to both the business problem and the buyer's stated success criteria. Mini-summary: Motivation recalled at the right moment makes the proposal feel relevant, personal, and credible. Is it really about greed in Japan, or something else? Not really. In Japan, it is usually less about greed and more about alignment with what the buyer cares about most. The goal is not to provoke selfishness. The goal is to connect your solution to meaningful motivation. That is why the phrase "greed gland" is more provocative than literal. The best salespeople are not trying to manipulate buyers into chasing rewards. They are trying to understand what the buyer wants to see happen and then demonstrate how their solution supports that outcome. Sometimes that outcome is individual. Often in Japan it is collective. Either way, the mechanism is the same: listen carefully, accept the answer at face value, and tie the bow between the earlier conversation and the current proposal. That shows attentiveness, empathy, and commercial intelligence. Buyers want to feel heard, respected, and supported in succeeding on their own terms. Do now: Focus less on extracting personal ambition and more on aligning your proposal with the buyer's real success story. Mini-summary: In Japan, effective selling is not about greed. It is about respectful alignment with stated motivation. Conclusion Stimulating buyer motivation in Japan requires finesse, not force. The most effective salespeople earn trust, ask permission, surface what success means to the buyer, and then reconnect their solution to that answer when presenting the proposal. Whether the buyer frames success as personal, team-based, or organisational, the principle stays the same: people move forward more confidently when they can see that your solution supports what matters to them. In Japan, that connection must be made with subtlety, patience, and respect. Done well, it becomes one of the strongest parts of the sales process. Send us Fan MailPaper Discussed in this Episode:The Performance of Artificial Intelligence in Classifying Molecular Markers in Adult-Type Gliomas Using Histopathological Images: Systematic Review. Almaabreh O, Al-Dafi R, Tabassum A, Othman A, Abd-alrazaq A. J Med Internet Res 2026; 28: e78377.Episode Summary: In this deep dive of the Digital Pathology Podcast, we explore the intersection of human limitations and computational power. Following the 2021 World Health Organization mandate requiring molecular data to diagnose adult-type gliomas, pathology has faced a massive bottleneck. Can artificial intelligence look at a standard pink-and-purple tissue slide and accurately predict hidden genetic mutations to serve as a diagnostic shortcut? We unpack a massive 2026 systematic review that evaluates the architectures, the "data diets," and the structural hurdles of using AI to "see the invisible".In This Episode, We Cover:• The 2021 WHO Diagnostic Shakeup: How the World Health Organization shifted glioma diagnosis from pure visual morphology (judging a book by its cover) to requiring precise genetic spelling (finding a typo on page 42), making the diagnostic process incredibly slow and expensive.• The Targets - IDH vs. 1p/19q: Why AI models are highly proficient at spotting the metaphorical "canyon" carved by early metabolic IDH mutations, but struggle to find the subtle visual clues of 1p/19q chromosomal codeletions.• The AI Toolkit - CNNs, MIL, and Transformers: ◦ CNNs (like DenseNet121): The heavy lifters of medical imaging, analyzing local cell structures and edges by constantly reusing foundational visual features. ◦ Multiple Instance Learning (MIL): The brilliant algorithmic solution to the excruciating human labor of pixel-by-pixel tumor annotation, allowing the AI to mathematically figure out what cancer looks like using only slide-level labels. ◦ Hybrid Models: By combining the microscopic focus of CNNs with the zoomed-out, global contextual awareness of Transformers, these models achieved the highest average accuracy at 92.80%.• The "Data Diet" and Domain Shift: The critical danger of training AI exclusively on single, homogeneous databases like the TCGA. We discuss why an algorithm that performs perfectly in a pristine "test kitchen" completely panics and drops in performance when faced with the varied stains, slice thicknesses, and scans of real-world community hospitals.• Multimodal Medicine: The revelation that AI models perform vastly better when fed diverse data streams, such as combining slide images with MRI scans and clinical notes. Implementing this necessitates a monumental structural integration between historically siloed hospital departments like radiology and pathology.Key Takeaway: AI is not replacing pathologists tomorrow; it is stepping into the co-pilot seat. While hybrid models show immense promise, their true standalone clinical adoption depends on breaking free from narrow training data, overcoming domain shift, and fundamentally restructuring our hospitals to feed these algorithms the multimodal context they need to thriveSupport the showGet the "Digital Pathology 101" FREE E-book and join us!

Send us Fan MailPaper Discussed in this Episode:Deep learning-based histopathological classification and subclassification of benign and malignant salivary gland tumors. Weber A, Schuster D, Heyer J, Becker C, Burkhardt V, Werner M, Spörlein A, Bronsert P, Schulz T. European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology 2026.Episode Summary: In this journal club deep dive of the Digital Pathology Podcast, we explore a chaotic microscopic landscape to see if artificial intelligence can master one of the most high-pressure diagnostic environments in medicine. We examine a groundbreaking 2026 study on rare salivary gland tumors, exploring how state-of-the-art AI models performed when tasked with distinguishing benign lesions from complex malignancies. We uncover where the AI achieved absolute perfection, where it catastrophically failed, and why its "mistakes" might just be a window into hidden biological truths. In This Episode, We Cover:• The High-Stakes Minefield of Salivary Glands: Why diagnosing these tumors is a delicate and complex task. With 36 potential entities and a practically zero margin for error, misdiagnoses can lead to devastating revision surgeries and permanent facial nerve palsy for the patient.• Training the Machine: How researchers used 20 years of slide data and the "Reinhard color normalization method" to mathematically standardize color palettes. This prevented the AI from "cheating" by simply memorizing fading colors or specific lab stains.• The AI Arsenal - CNNs vs. Vision Transformers: A look at the diverse algorithms deployed in the study, ranging from convolutional neural networks (like Xception and ConvNeXt) that scan local pixels, to Vision Transformers that analyze global image context, processing massive slides tile by tile.• The Perfection of Binary Triage: The stunning success of the AI in the initial benign vs. malignant test. Models like Xception achieved a 100% Negative Predictive Value (NPV), meaning they never missed a single cancer, proving their potential as a flawless morning triage tool for pathology labs.• The Subclassification Wall: Why the AI bombed when trying to identify the specific type of malignant tumor (like squamous cell or acinic cell carcinoma). We explore the deep learning rules of data volume and tissue heterogeneity, and why rare, morphologically chaotic diseases effectively starve algorithms of the data they need.• Explainable AI & The "Clever Hans" Dilemma: By using Class Activation Maps (heat maps), researchers tracked the AI's "eyes". While it often smartly focused on proven biological markers like enlarged, hypochromatic nuclei for cancer, it sometimes made correct diagnoses by staring at random, non-traceable artifacts, raising severe trust issues for clinical deployment.Key Takeaway: Deep learning models are currently fantastic, ultra-reliable screening assistants for binary benign/malignant triage, but they aren't ready to replace human pathologists for complex subtyping without massive, multi-institutional datasets. However, the AI's occasional focus on obscure visual data forces us to ask: is the machine just learning random artifacts, or has it successfully discovered subtle microscopic biological truths that human experts haven't even learned to see yet?Support the showGet the "Digital Pathology 101" FREE E-book and join us!

From near-disasters at sea to epic surf sessions on a vintage Jerry Lopez board, they dive into the spirit of exploration, the Waterman ethos, and the thrill of turning an uncharted journey into a captivating story.Episode Highlights:- Origins of the Idea: Josh and Dane discuss how the project sparked from shared creative vibes, Josh's inspiration from Dane's prior adventure film with Zane, and the goal to blend foiling with classic surfing in Indonesia's wild waters—pitching a high-stakes crossing that aligned perfectly with swell and wind forecasts.- Planning and Launch: The duo reflects on committing to the trip just a week out, Josh's background in downwinding and island traversals, and Dane's hands-off approach to filming, relying on a support boat for safety and shots in an unpredictable ocean playground.- The Crossing Drama: A deep dive into the 92km foil journey turning chaotic—getting off course, the boat snagging debris and vanishing, Josh navigating solo by wind, watch, and stars while battling dehydration, currents, and wildlife, and Dane's tense hour-plus search feeling utterly isolated without comms.- Survival and Reunion: Josh shares the mental shift to survival mode, ignoring ground swell to follow wind direction, spotting whales and debris, and the massive relief of reuniting; Dane recounts the crew's frantic scans, aligning rescue plans, and capturing the emotional finale with jungle backdrops.- Surfing Legacy at G-Land: Wrapping the adventure with perfect waves, Josh riding a single-fin Jerry Lopez Lightning Bolt board for a bucket-list tube session, paying homage to surf pioneers like Lopez and McCabe, and how it tied into the film's theme of exploration beyond crowded breaks.- Filmmaking Challenges: Dane opens up on the pressure to capture the trip's raw magic in editing—focusing on audio, story flow, and visuals without over-stylizing—while emphasizing the foil as a tool for adventure, not the sole focus, in a nod to historical ocean tales.- Reflections and Growth: Insights on embracing uncertainty, learning from mishaps like inadequate safety plans, the addictive "have a go" spirit of true adventure, and how the experience reinforced their Waterman perspectives without modern tech crutches.- Premieres and Next Horizons: Details on upcoming screenings in Sydney (November 7, 2025, at Collaroy Cinema) and potential LA showings, plus teases for future collaborations blending Josh's athletic pushes and Dane's filmmaking prowess.Follow Josh - https://www.instagram.com/joshku/Follow Dane - https://www.instagram.com/dane___wilson/

Off the coast of Java, Indonesia, lies G-Land, one of the world's most legendary surf breaks, framed by a dense forest that was once home to the now-extinct Javan tiger. Alas Purwo (which literally means “Ancient Forest” or “First Forest” in Javanese) is considered one of the most mystical places in Java, with deep ties to Javanese spirituality and legend. Despite Java being one of the most crowded islands on Earth, this sacred jungle has remained largely untouched. In the 1970s, surfer Bobby Radiasa arrived from neighbouring Bali to visit American surfers who had set up a remote base there, hammocks and tree houses, what some say is the world's first surf camp. He discovered both myth and magic in its waves. Also features an interview with Jim Banks, an Australian surfing legend known as a pioneer of big wave surfing and among the first group of surfers that arrived in Bali and later to G-land.

Host: Darryl S. Chutka, M.D. Guest: Eric J. Moore, M.D. Salivary gland tumors can be benign or malignant, as well as primary or metastatic. Malignant salivary gland tumors usually present after the 6th decade, whereas benign lesions tend to occur a bit earlier, usually in the 4th to 5th decades. An interesting statistic is that the vast majority of salivary gland tumors occur in the parotid, only about 10% occur in the submandibular salivary gland and less than 4% in the minor salivary glands. Fortunately, most parotid tumors are benign. Previous radiation as well as occupational exposure to silica and nitrosamines have been linked to malignant parotid tumors. What should a primary care clinician do when we discover a mass in the parotid gland? What imaging studies are helpful? What treatment is available and what happens if the tumor recurs? These are all questions I'll be asking my guest, Eric J. Moore, M.D., Chair of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery at the Mayo Clinic as we discuss “Parotid Gland Tumors”. Qu'est-ce que le mythe du gland de lait ?

Choses à Savoir

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 25, 2025 2:28

Dr. Laura Hernandez and Dr. Tom Overton: The role of the mammary gland in calcium metabolism

Real Science Exchange

Dr. Hernandez recently presented a Real Science Lecture series webinar on this topic. You can find the link at balchem.com/realscience.Dr. Hernandez begins with an overview of how she came to study calcium metabolism in the mammary gland. Over the past number of years, she has worked on research to manipulate what's happening in the mammary gland in the prepartum period to ensure adequate endocrine, nutritional, reproductive, and immunological status. (5:55)The panelists discuss how “normal” has changed when it comes to transition cow health. Dr. Overton reminds listeners that 25 years ago, 6-8% of fresh cows in a herd having clinical milk fever was pretty typical. Now, we accept none of that. Subclinical hypocalcemia was not on the radar then, and we thought we had calcium all figured out. Dr. Hernandez's work shows that this was not the case. She is pleased that a synergism of producers, veterinarians, and academics have been working together to understand the mechanisms of calcium metabolism to find solutions for individual farms based on their situation. (9:22)Dr. Hernandez then discusses various interventions used in the industry, including low-potassium diets, negative DCAD diets, and zeolite clays. The clays are new to the US, and it seems that they work primarily through a phosphorus reduction mechanism and are best limited to feeding 10-14 days pre-calving. (18:14)Dr. Overton asks Dr. Hernandez about a point in her webinar that cows are in negative calcium balance through 150-200 days in milk. She confirms that there are approximately 8.5 kilograms of calcium in the bones of a cow, but we don't know how much of that she loses each lactation. Her dream scenario would be a CT scanner large enough to fit a dairy cow in to evaluate how her bones change throughout lactation. This leads to a discussion of whether or not we should be including higher rates of calcium in dairy cow diets. Dr. Hernandez would like to learn more about what's happening with calcium absorption in the gut in real-time with endocrine status and stage of lactation, which is a challenging task. (23:17)Co-host, Dr. Jeff Elliott, asks if the reason multiparous cows are more prone to milk fever is because they're not as efficient at calcium resorption to the bone. Dr. Hernandez doesn't have a definitive answer, but it could be due to less effective gut absorption with age, or it may be related to the influence of estrogen on bone density. She also mentions it could be endocrine-controlled or even stem cell-related.  (28:59)Dr. Hernandez's hypothesis has always been that you have to have a calcium decrease to trigger the negative feedback loop involved in calcium metabolism. Her advice is to wait until 48 hours to take a blood sample to analyze calcium. This aligns well with epidemiological research on the veterinarian side regarding delayed, persistent, transient, and normal hypocalcemic animals. (33:04)Dr. Overton asks about a calcium-chelation study that Dr. Hernandez's group conducted and whether or not chelating calcium had an impact on colostrum production. It did not in that experiment. Dr. Hernandez was surprised at how much chelating agent was needed to overcome the draw of the mammary gland, but that further underlines how much of a priority lactation is in metabolism. (41:45)Scott asks both panelists their views on what the priority should be for research in this area. Dr. Hernandez's ideas include more research on how zeolite clays work biologically, finding out what's happening in the gut, mammary gland, and bone of a dairy cow at different stages of lactation. She emphasizes that research should be conducted at different stages rather than just extrapolating from one stage to another because lactation is incredibly dynamic. Dr. Overton seconded the idea of a better understanding of zeolite clays and their feeding recommendations, as well as research defining what happens to and where all the calcium is pulled from the bone during lactation. (45:32) In closing, Jeff, Tom, and Laura share their take-home thoughts. Jeff is excited to learn more about how zeolite clays work and if other products may come to the forefront to help in calcium metabolism management. Tom commends Laura on her work and how it has dovetailed so well with the epidemiological research from the veterinary side. Laura reminds listeners that the mammary gland is running the show and is thrilled that her work as a basic scientist is having an applied impact on the dairy industry. Thank you for joining us for our 2nd Cabral HouseCall of the weekend! I'm looking forward to sharing with you some of our community's questions that have come in over the past few weeks… Jenny: Hi Dr. Cabral, First, thank you to you and your amazing team for selflessly giving of your time and knowledge so we can all learn and grow on our health journeys. We can't really express this enough. I have a question about your Alkalizing Vitamin C product. You've recommended this as something to take in water upon waking, but could it also be effective when I add it to my morning smoothie or is it better to take separately? I don't enjoy the taste on its own, so I'm unlikely to drink it just in water. Any suggestions? Thanks!   Kavita: Hello Dr. Cabral, First, I want to thank you for your amazing work! I listen to your podcast every day, which means I've been consistently listening for the past 3,231 days! :) I have an important question for you. I recently started taking Berberine, but a friend mentioned that it may have adverse reactions. She told me about her neighbor, who had to stop taking it because doctors wouldn't perform surgery on her while she was using Berberine. I'm unsure of the exact details, but it raised some concerns. I started taking Berberine because there's diabetes in my family, and I'm hoping to avoid getting on any medications as I move ahead in life. How do I make sure it is working for me? I hope this gets on your list soon :) Thank you, Kavita ( Pronounced - ka-vee-tha)    Jenni: Hi, I've been battling Meibomian Gland Disorder for over a year. The only thing that has provided relief has been taking 50mg daily of doxycycline. I've been on this dosage for 10 months. My doctor has tried weaning me off, but the symptoms pop back up after 4-5 days. Nobody seems to understand why this issue arose suddenly, and no one can offer me help outside of antibiotics. Do you have any experience in helping patients with MGD? Could this be due to heavy metals, gut issues, systemic inflammation? I'm desperate for natural relief. Thank you, Jenni   Michael: Hi Dr. Cabral. Thank you for the work you do and especially taking time to answer people's questions. My question is regarding to home oil as the main heating source. What are your thoughts on the cleanest and safest option? We currently have the standard heating oil. There is an option to change the oil to a B50 blend which consists of a 50/50 blend of standard heating oil and biodiesel. This would then convert to a B99 fuel which is 99% biodiesel. Any thoughts on this subject or know of a place I can go to research more? Thank you!   Paedyn: Hi Dr Cabral, but of a hard to question. What are some ways I can naturally treat MALS (median arcuate ligament syndrome). I woke up randomly with stomach pain in my epigastric region one day out of nowhere and Dr's are saying it's this and that the only treatment option is very major surgery which only a select handful of surgeons perform this surgery worldwide and a lot of people end up worse off after the surgery. I just want to heal my body naturally. Thank you so much!
