This episode of The Future Built Smarter examines modern high performance computing facilities and the opportunity to use their waste heat as an energy source. “High performance facilities for computing are different than what most people would consider a data center,” says Brandon Fortier, IMEG's Director of Science and Technology. “Data centers serve general purpose IT needs for a building or a company, things like web hosting, cloud storage capabilities, et cetera. High performance facilities for computing serve more of a scientific or other research need. They use significantly more computing power because they're doing things like climate modeling or machine learning for AI.” Such energy-intensive AI deep learning computing requires an intense amount of cooling, which generates a significant amount of waste heat. In the right locations—such as on a healthcare, higher education, or federal campus, as well as private research campuses—this heat can be recovered and pushed into district energy systems for use in the heating of neighboring buildings, greatly supporting overall sustainability and greenhouse gas reduction goals in the process. “These high performance data centers definitely produce a lot of heat,” says Ken Urbanek, a client executive in IMEG's Denver office. “On the other hand, that's a great energy source. Let's grab that source energy from that data center and push that into the campus.” Ken provides several real-life examples of leveraging such an energy source, from an East Coast university that is planning to condition millions of square feet across its campus to more niche examples such as conditioning greenhouses in colder climates and even warming a pond at a trout farm. “There are a lot of synergies out there,” Ken says. For a campus, he adds, “as you're looking to decarbonize and you're looking at various options, part of that exercise should be if a data center makes sense… There's not a research facility, whether it's on a healthcare, academic, or other campus, that probably can't find a business case to say, ‘How can we utilize advanced AI to help further our research?' Now you just have to say, ‘Where on this campus can we find 10, 15, 20 megawatts of power?' In your decarbonization plan, you might be pulling that energy anyway. And better to put it into AI and utilize it for research than to put it into heat pumps or some sort of electric generation system.”

Caitlin Davies has always wanted to be a writer. It took her a long time to admit it to herself, let alone voice it aloud. She started writing as a journalist, covering stories across Europe and Africa, and now, finally, is a published author. She writes widely, switching genres and styles, releasing 6 novels and 8 narrative nonfiction books along the way. Caitlin tends to be inspired by forgotten women from history, and water. Her most recent book is 'Private Inquiries: The Secret History of Female Sleuths'. It was partly inspired by 'Queens of the Underworld' and 'Bad Girls', two books that told a history of crime from the other side of the coin - from the crooks. Caitlin has also published books about swimming in the Thames River, the Ponds on Hampstead Heath, and the history of Camden Lock. To make time to write, Caitlin has fingers in many different creative earning pies - occasionally teaching, designing and decorating sea shells for local businesses. We discuss how all this feeds into inspiration for her books. You can hear whether, as her writing seems so varied and eclectic, there is any grand plan for where it'll take her, also why she wnet back to school for reserach, and why she forgets how tricky it is writing fiction after a time away. You can get a copy of the book here - uk.bookshop.org/shop/writersroutineSupport the show - patreon.com/writersroutineko-fi.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. rWotD Episode 2945: Hampstead Heath Ponds Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia's vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Tuesday, 27 May 2025, is Hampstead Heath Ponds.Hampstead Heath Ponds are a series of some thirty bodies of water on or adjacent to Hampstead Heath, a vast open area of woodland and grassland in north London. The main ponds were originally dug in the 17th and 18th centuries as reservoirs to meet London's growing water demand. These are divided into two groups: the three Hampstead Ponds (West Heath Side) and the eight Highgate Ponds (East Heath Side). Both sets of ponds are officially numbered incrementally from South to North, the southernmost pond being Hampstead no. 1 pond and the northernmost being Highgate no. 8 (Kenwood House's Wood Pond). The majority of the ponds on Hampstead Heath are fed by the headwater springs of the River Fleet. Three of the main ponds are now large freshwater bathing/swimming ponds: two designated single sex (Highgate no. 2 male and Highgate no. 5 female); and one for mixed bathing (Hampstead no. 3). The bathing ponds are not the only special-use ponds, however: Highgate no. 3 pond is the Model Boating Pond and it, along with a few other ponds, are open to anglers. A number of the other ponds are set aside as wildlife reserves or are purely ornamental (such as the more minor Viaduct Pond). The City of London Corporation tried to close the bathing ponds in 2004, but a challenge at the High Court by swimmers overcame this, though charges for swimming were introduced. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:11 UTC on Tuesday, 27 May 2025.For the full current version of the article, see Hampstead Heath Ponds on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Geraint.

Send Me A Message!! The biodiversity crisis might seem like an insurmountable challenge, but amidst the doom and gloom shines a remarkable story of hope and transformation. Welcome to Wild Acres Nature Reserve in County Wicklow, where a couple's decision to trade corporate careers for conservation has created a thriving ecological paradise. When Brian and Gilly purchased four fields of intensively grazed perennial ryegrass in 2017, they faced a landscape stripped of life. Seven years later, their 34-acre reserve boasts 57 wildlife ponds, 15,000 native trees, and four acres of wildflower meadows teeming with insects, birds, and mammals. From otters playing in the ponds to woodpeckers drumming in the trees, the transformation has been nothing short of miraculous. What makes their story particularly inspiring is how accessible their methods are to everyone. As Brian explains, "Nature is very forgiving. Once you bring the habitats back, it will respond positively." Their experience demonstrates that even small actions can yield remarkable results. A wildlife pond—which can be as simple as a repurposed container on a balcony—can attract diverse aquatic life within days. Native wildflowers, whether in a meadow or container, provide critical food sources for pollinators. These small pockets of habitat, when created across neighborhoods, form vital connectivity that allows wildlife to thrive in urban and suburban settings.Beyond the ecological benefits, Wild Acres highlights the profound human connection to nature. Scientific research now confirms what Brian and Gillian witness regularly: time spent in natural spaces reduces stress hormones, improves mental clarity, and enhances overall wellbeing. Their workshops on pond creation, beekeeping, and wildlife gardening consistently sell out as people seek to reconnect with the natural world and make a positive difference.Ready to create your own patch of biodiversity paradise? Visit Wild Acres online to learn about their upcoming workshops or start simply with a small pond, native plants, or bird feeder in your garden. The journey toward ecological recovery begins with a single step—and as this inspiring couple proves, nature will gladly meet you halfway. You can connect with Wildacres here https://wildacres.ieSupport the showIf there is any topic you would like covered in future episodes, please let me know. One of the largest deals to acquire a D2C brand took place in January this year. India's largest manufacturer of consumer good, Hindustan Unilever acquired the skincare company Minimalist, a 90% shareholding for nearly Rs 3000 crores.Homegrown startup beauty brands have been on a roll in India. Scores and scores of new age skincare brands have cropped up since the pandemic and all of them harp on the science of it. And their whole appeal is transparency. Transparency about the ingredients that go into each of their products.Among all of them, Minimalist is the one that really stands out. It is an active ingredients based skincare company that sells things like niacinamide, retinol, Vit C, glycolic acid, and salicylic acid. It launched around the end of 2020, and within a span of eight months, it built a 1000 crore rupee business. What's even more surprising that the brand has remained in the green, meaning profitable, from the very first month itself. For years, legacy brands like, HUL, Ponds, and Loreal have been selling products with similar ingredient--the only difference being they either didn't launch them in India or the kept the names hidden away in tiny fonts at the back of the bottles. It was Minimalist that came around and broke that mould. And now, seeing the success of brands like Minimalist, legacy brands are rethinking their strategy.Case in point: Hindustan UnileverThe company's has been wanting to turn its beauty and well-being portfolio into a “high-growth" premium category for a while now and the acquisition of Minimalist is a big step in that direction. But how did Minimalist manage something that a giant like HUL couldn't?Tune in.**This episode was first published on January 27, 2025Daybreak is now on WhatsApp at +918971108379. Bird flu has been found in a sheep for the first time. DEFRA said the case in Yorkshire was on a farm where avian flu was present in captive birds. One ewe tested positive and has been culled, but her lambs and the rest of the small flock of sheep were negative. Surveillance of mammals for avian flu has been stepped up, partly because in the United States many dairy cattle and even some dairy workers, have gone down with the disease. We speak to the chief vet.Avian influenza is of course at the forefront of egg producers' minds at the moment, and free range layers in many parts of the country must now be kept indoors. All week we're taking a closer look at egg production. Today we speak to a free-range egg producer in Wales.A project involving farmers and nature conservationists is celebrating the restoration of 400 "lost" farmland ponds in Essex. A century ago there were more than 17,000 in the county but conservationists say around 10,000 of those have disappeared. We visit a farm which has been part of a big project to restore some of them.Presenter = Anna Hill Producer = Rebecca Rooney

The Great Auk: Its Extraordinary Life, Hideous Death and Mysterious Afterlife is the subject of Tim Birkhead's new book. This goose-sized seabird became the favoured food of hungry sailors and hunters, and the last two were killed in 1844. But then the bird became an obsession for collectors who vied for the last skins, eggs and skeletons. Victorian hunters, explorers and collectors feature strongly in the story of the Great Auk. The writer Kaliane Bradley places the 19th century polar explorer Commander Graham Gore at the heart of her time-travelling novel, The Ministry of Time. The book is being made into a television series on BBC1 – to be aired later in the Spring. Human activity has had, and continues to have, a big impact on bird populations. While several species have gone extinct, more are classified as threatened. But a joint conservation project between farmers and wildlife organisations is looking at restoring ‘zombie' ponds, in an effort to increase pockets of wildlife. The RSPB's Mark Nowers helps to organise the Lost Ponds Project and is involved in the protection of turtle doves, whose numbers are vulnerable.Producer: Katy Hickman

It's finally time to say goodbye to the Ponds...mostly. Despite a few straggler episodes we have yet to discuss, this month's podcast is all about the farewell story for Amy and Rory, "The Angels Take Manhattan." How does Steven Moffat bid his era's first companions adieu? Are we happy with it? Why are the Angels in it? Did River Song really write a whole book about herself? Weird.

Today's podcast features a discussion between Eric Triplett and Tyson Matyas about the importance of foresight, not only in pond keeping but also in business. Enjoy personal stories about when foresight, or a lack thereof, and how it impacted their lives and businesses. The conversation covers pond construction, maintenance, and fish care, exploring whether foresight is instinctual or if it can be taught. The discussion also touches on the idea that hindsight can build foresight, as learning from past mistakes is crucial. Get ready for valuable insights for pond owners and contractors alike, emphasizing the need to plan and learn from experiences to achieve better results in both life and business. Key Takeaways: When installing a pond liner, leave it long and wild at the edges to act as a weed barrier and avoid cutting it short. Plan for a way to easily drain your pond, preferably through a ball valve integrated into the plumbing system. Incorporate lighting into your pond's initial design, rather than adding it later, to ensure proper placement and prevent visible wires. Think about how you want your fish population to evolve in the future, whether you plan to keep them long-term or frequently change them, so you can build your pond to suit that plan. Train yourself to have better foresight by being more thoughtful and self-aware and learning from mistakes.
