Sick of working for "the man"? Today we'll talk to a woman who's never held down a single full time job but who's created a career out of what most people call "side hustles." We'll explore pitfalls, opportunities, and more with Shanah Bell, author of The Art of Being a Pita, Paula Pant from Afford Anything, and from our very own podcast, OG. Halfway through the show we'll take a break from our side hustle conversation so Joe can sit down with Tony Aquilar, the founder of new student loans app Chipper. Worried about your student loans? Tony will share some helpful tips on how to pay down student loans quicker, AND will show off how his app will help you do just that. ...and after we take some time for Doug's trivia, our roundtable contributors will share some ideas to help caller TJ during our Magnify Money segment. TJ wants to know some fun and interesting ways to teach kids about money and saving for retirement. Thoughts?

Frugal Foodie: Eating Well on a Budget

Learn the frugal foodie tactics and strategies on how to slash your food bills while eating well! The Art of Being a Frugal Foodie How much do you spend on food?  If you’re like most families, chances are it’s a big part of your budget.  The USDA puts together a monthly report that looks into average food expenses. They break it down into thrifty, low-cost, moderate, and liberal spending plans based on how old your kids are.  And the monthly costs for a family of four vary from $567 – $1296. Like I mentioned last episode when you’re working as a family towards financial independence, you have to look for big wins.  Mastering your food expenses is a big win, but…. If you think I’m going to tell you to skip eating out or only make these basic dishes, I’m not.  Food is something I don’t like to skimp out on. We want to eat better and enjoy our meals, whether it’s at home (which is most of the time) or when we’re out.  So if you look at our budget, it’s a big category for us relative to other expenses. But it doesn’t blow our budget and we’re still able to save for other important goals.   And looking over the past year, our spending is around the USDA’s thrifty and low-cost plan.  The challenge – besides being smarter with money – is also finding ways to get meals up and ready in a relatively short time.  After work it’s tempting to grab some food on the way home.  So we need to have things set up so preparing a tasty meal is a snap.  And when we do it out – because yes, we like to go out sometimes, we try to maximize the experience.  So if you want to get a handle on your food bill and still have a good time, I think you’ll enjoy this episode.  I’ve recruited some others to help.  Besides having a masters in nutrition, author Shanah Bell is also a busy mom of five. Finding meals are all of her kids enjoy can be tricky, but she has strategies that make meals less stressful, healthy, and fun.  Patrick Livingston is also a foodie and loves trying new things that are off the beaten path. He also has some creative ideas on how to make those nights out even more special while still sticking to your budget.  We’re going to look at this from two sides: How to make tasty, quick and affordable meals How to enjoy a meal out so that’s it’s special and you’re not breaking the budget Let’s get started! Shanah Bell In a world where people are more concerned about their time off, complaining about working too many hours, along comes a young woman who goes to college and graduate school, is a single parent works multiple jobs and is looking for more work. Along the way she accumulates a variety of knowledge multiple skills. Couple with that her relentless work ethic and her desire to learn and you have an amazing story of one person who inspires others to success. This describes this episode of A New Direction's guest, Shanah Bell. The Art of Being a PITA Shanah grew up in an entrepreneurial family. A family where you just always tried. You never quit trying, and you give your best effort at all times. Known for her stubbornness and "never tell me I can't do something" attitude her mom called her a PITA (Pain in the ----). That acronym would serve her well as her work ethic, knowledge, skills, and abilities, allowed her be able to do nearly everything and do it with great success. Hence, she wrote a book about her experiences and the lessons she has learned entitled "The Art of Being a PITA".While all of Shanah's many jobs make an interesting story. There is also the problem of the stereotype of someone who is trying to figure out her place. And because of her ability to quickly learn and adapt it became a challenge for businesses to figure out how to categorize her, or where she exactly fit in. The truth is, they just needed to plug her in, because she is capable of being great in any position they put her in. Shanah Bell Her story is one that may make some people shake their heads. It will make you laugh, because her fun loving giving attitude is contagious. But it really is a story of a relentless young women in search of her dreams, while managing a full time job as a single parent, a full time graduate student, and managing to excel at multiple jobs at the same time. It is people like her that are that every employer should desire, and the type of person we need to applaud. Enjoy Shanah's thoughts and insights. And maybe you will desire to learn the art of being a PITA.Thank you as always for our sponsor partners. Shanah Bell wants you to lead a happy, unorthodox life. You can be successful without following the traditional 9 to 5 career path option. It's true. But to get there, you have to be open to opportunity and change, and sometimes you have to be a bit of a PITA, which I recently learned is an acronym for Pain In The Ass. In fact, Shanah's new book is called The Art of Being a PITA. It guides new adults and recent college graduates through the ins-and-outs of living life the way they want to. The way that no one talks about. As she tells it, most people believe you are a pain in the ass if you do things that are contrary to societal norms. For example, if you don't follow this checklist: 9 to 5 job, marriage, house, kids, work until 65, retire and then finally do what you want, society is like, stop being a pain in the ass and just do what the rest of us are doing. Shanah's path is a bit different. She figured out how to do many, many different things for money, on her own terms. Because this show is about her personal finance story, we didn't spend a lot of time delving into the 56 jobs Shanah has had, but if you're interested in the details, pick up a copy of the book, where she goes through each job and the lessons she learned from each one. Since she wrote the book Shanah has added 4 more jobs: dog boarding, cooking classes, AirBNB, and, of course, author. Shanah joined me from her home in Raleigh, North Carolina to share her personal finance story. In this week's episode of The Crushing Debt Podcast, I talk to the Cash Wise Ex Wives, Kayla Sloan and Shanah Bell.  I met Kayla and Shanah at FinCon 2018 in Orlando a few months ago. Kayla and Shanah are both divorced themselves and met at FinCon 2017. They talked about their journey of divorce and debt and, although each had their own business, they had people continue to come to them asking for help with their divorce and money issues. So they started www.CashWiseExWives.com, a membership site with resources to help both men and women handle issues of divorce and money. You can reach Kayla and Shanah at their website, or follow them on Facebook - Facebook.com/cashwiseexwives, Twitter - @cashwiseexwives, or by email - cashwiseexwives@gmail.com. While they are not attorneys, they do have considerable resources (including introductions to attorneys) who can help you with questions surrounding debt and divorce.
