Welcome back to Geek Warning! The podcast that puts all the most interesting cycling tech and advice into one place. Before you tune in to the latest episode, it's worth noting that the geeks often record a few days before an episode drops. In any normal week that's no problem, but it's been far from a normal week. In this episode Ronan McLaughlin, Suvi Loponen, and Dave Rome chat about the impact of tariffs on the cycling industry - many of which have been put on hold in the time between recording and publishing. Still, some discussed themes are likely to become true.On a happier note it's the week of the Sea Otter Classic in California. Recent years have seen this event organically become the industry tradeshow for the North American market, and with that, you can bet there are always plenty of new things to see. The geeks discuss some of the bigger announcements leading into the event.Lastly, the episode wraps up with our Ask a Wrench segment featuring pro-race mechanic Brad Copeland. Life in the Peloton
Flanders Finished, the Roubaix Cobbles Await: Laurence Pithie's Reckoning

Life in the Peloton

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 9, 2025 44:05

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP I don't know about you guys, but I thought this year's edition of the Tour of Flanders was an absolute classic. It had everything: drama, excitement, chaos, and - of course - a worthy winner. I couldn't wait to catch up with our man on the ground, Laurence Pithie, to hear what happened between the barriers on the bergs of Flanders, and hear how he's feeling ahead of the Queen of the classics; Roubaix. Laurence went into Flanders after a pretty nasty crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen the Wednesday before. Fortunately, although he was a bit stiff and bruised, his legs came good and - after over 6 hours of brutal racing - he rolled home in an impressive 11th place. The TV cameras were pretty fixed on that leading group of Pog, Van Der Poel, Pedersen, and Van Aert for the last few hours of the race, so Pithie's ride went a bit under the radar - but that's one of the things I've loved most about getting these updates from him this season; hearing those stories the cameras miss. Although he's still only 22 years old, the way Laurence talks about these races shows just how experienced and mature as a rider he is. Hearing how he raced this year's edition compared to last year, and the changes he made to his tactics even just over the course of this classics season, it's easy to tell how professional he is; already a real seasoned pro. Laurence isn't racing Scheldeprijs - the midweek race between Flanders and Roubaix - so he actually made the decision to fly home for a few days of normality to reset before heading back to the cobbles for Paris Roubaix this Sunday. Flanders is such a huge event with so much build up, it can be pretty overwhelming - so breaking out the bubble for a few days should let Laurence reset and come back ready for all out war at Roubaix. I mean, just looking at the walls of fans on the roadside all the way around Flanders, I'd need a few days to get my hearing back, let alone my legs! I have absolutely loved these regular phone calls with Pithie and really trying to understand what those 3 weeks on the road are like from the inside. It's no secret that I absolutely love the Spring classics; the ins and outs, the crashes, the stories - I could talk about them all day. it's not all about the podium riders - every single rider in these races is giving absolutely everything, and I think that's why they mean so much to so many people; you've got 180 guys lining up ready to leave everything out there on the road.  Of course, it's not all over - the best is yet to come. This Sunday, the Queen of the Classics, the Hell of the North, my favourite race: Paris Roubaix. Last year Laurence bagged himself a classy 7th place, and he's looking to better that this time around. I could hear the fear in his voice when he told me the weather forecast; after one of the warmest, driest Springs on record - the rain is coming…oh, man, a wet Roubaix! It's the stuff of dreams…or nightmares. Whether the clouds break or not this weekend, I've got no doubt that Laurence is going to get to that iconic velodrome and round out a great Spring classics season with another pearler of a result. Who knows, he might even come home with a cobblestone of his own.  Guys, thanks for following along on this Spring Classics mini series. I hope you've enjoyed these updates from Laurence and the rest of the Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe team as much as I have. In fact, Laurence has actually agreed to give me a call after Roubaix so we can wrap up this series and hear about what went down on the pavé - a cheeky bonus ep. for you all.  Laurence; this is it now, mate, the big one. Go and get it. We're all rooting for you.  Cheers! Born in Dallas, Texas, in 1960, Joe spent his early years in the surrounding cities of Irving and Mesquite, where proximity to the Mesquite rodeo sparked a four-year stint as a bull rider. After retiring in 2018, a "no BS" pursuit of Bigfoot began. Inspired by his wife's moniker, "Squatchin' Cowboy," he has since dedicated himself to searching for the elusive creature across thirteen states, including significant time in Oklahoma, along with expeditions to Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, Kansas, Tennessee, and Georgia. While a sighting remains elusive, he believes he has come close, particularly in Texas, where numerous tracks have been found, though Oklahoma stands out as a prime location. Memorable experiences include encountering ten distinct tree knocks simultaneously, numerous howls and screams, and discovering a small footprint on a mountainside. Hope to see you all there at 8 p.m. EST.

With the help of Charleston Post and Courier articles written by their star reporter Mike Mooneyham, we will examine the Bush connection to the world of Professional wrestling and especially his fondness for wrestling's greatest athlete, "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair. We will hear about Bush's friendship with promoter Paul Boesch, his lifelong connection to "Chief" Ed "Wahoo" McDaniel, and his later friendship with "The Big Cat" Ernie Ladd. We will also hit the trail , in 1992, on the whistlestop tour that took George Bush through the Carolinas, with the biggest sports star of them all, Ric Flair. It was at a rally in Spartanburg S.C. where our Host, Randal Wallace, was able to maneuver himself up near the front with a little help from Martha Bishop, the sister of our Senator Strom Thurmond, so he would be nearly front row for the rally at the Train Depot, that would feature not only the President, but Governor Carrol Campbell, Lieutenant Governor Bob Peeler, Senator Strom Thurmond, Congressional Candidate Bob Inglis, and our host's childhood sports hero, Ric Flair. To this day, as you will hear, it remains Wallace's favorite memory of any in his over 45 years in politics. Unfortunately, we couldn't find any footage from the Spartanburg rally, but we do have some examples of George Bush out on his 1992 whistle-stop tour, and we do have some later moments from the 2008 Presidential campaign where Ric Flair would return to the trail to campaign for Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee. It was at the event for Huckabee in Myrtle Beach that our host again became the focus of attention as he stood with a folder full of wrestling magazines hoping to get them autographed by Ric Flair, at the Huckabee rally, while serving as the Rudy Giuliani Horry County Chairman. It made the news, in two articles in the Sun News political blog Poli-tick-Tock. We will look back at that blog too, and feature the Columbia Mike Huckabee Rally with Chuck Norris and Ric Flair. As you will hear, Hulk Hogan and Donald Trump were actually not the first Pro wrestler and President to headline a Presidential campaign event!!  Questions or comments at , Randalrgw1@aol.com , https://twitter.com/randal_wallace , and http://www.randalwallace.com/Please Leave us a review at wherever you get your podcastsThanks for listening!!

Hello my friends, and tonight on the Untold Radio Network we welcome Tristan Yolton to the show at 8pm est. Tristan growing up, has always had a fascination with cryptids, such as Bigfoot, but was never really interested in looking for them, until 2015, when his father heard some “whoops” behind their home. After setting out an audio recorder, in the area where the “whoops” were coming from, he was able to gather some very odd sounds, which may or may not have come from this relic hominid. Then he was hooked. For the next 7 years, he has traveled around his home state of Washington, trying to gather evidence and learn about these primitive people. Along the way, he has met/made some great friends and has seen/heard some amazing, yet puzzling things. The Bigfoot mystery, continues…as does his journey to help solve it. Dont miss tonight, as he has quite the impressive collection of evidence gathered. From audio to pictures, and maybe even captured one on film. Tune in tonight to find out. See you then.

When beginning this journey back in September 2022, I never imagined I would feel comfortable speaking French without thinking too far ahead of myself nor caring if I spoke incorrectly (which is still quite often), but two and a half years later, it has happened! Imperfect French is being spoken and the fundamentals are more confidently understood than ever before. Wahoo! While having attempted to take a French language class here and there over the past two years beginning when I was 20 back in college, I never made it past the 103. It took me three attempts, but finally, I made it all the way to completing FR 204 with the instruction of Washington D.C.'s Alliance de Française. Back in September 2022 I enrolled at the very beginning yet again, and told myself that B1 completion was my goal, so finishing FR 204. As I shared in episode #349, in part four of this series, “On ne comprend jamais tout à fait une langue avant d'en comprendre au moins deux.” And finally, the phrase rings more true than ever. To learn a second language, if one doesn't know well their first, is to more fully know their primary language well. And appreciate their knowledge of it as well. Humility is a muscle strengthened while stumbling over the rules of a new language and not being able to speak near as well as a toddler in the language you wish to know. So with my humility taken to the workout gym regularly twice a week, every week (minus the two week and annual four-week break between courses), attempting to speak French is no longer fearful, but absolutely not perfect. However, as my instructor for the past three courses reminded us repeatedly, practice, practice, practice. That is how we acquire into our long-term memory a language, by using, however, imperfectly from time to time. And so on February 13th, just over a month ago, I celebrating concluding FR 204. What I would like to share with you today are the key lessons learned during FR 203 and FR 204 as our last part of this series - part huit - covered up through my FR 202 class conclusion. Tune in to the episode to discover the 12 things I Learned in French Class So Far . . . , Part Neuf. It feels like you can't go five minutes without hearing about AI–and often for good reason! We're back with our favorite AI expert to talk about a “Hope over fear” approach for integrating AI into how we do life and business. We often face a skills and resource deficit in small towns, and AI can be an incredibly useful and powerful tool for bridging that gap, helping us work smarter, not harder, and even outsourcing tasks that we don't love so we can spend more time on the things that make us light up. About Scott: Scott Meyer (@MrScottMeyer) is an entrepreneur and former professor working to scale and democratize education.   His experience founding the digital marketing agency 9 Clouds and launch an entrepreneurship center and accelerated learning program in higher education sparked his interest in combining education and web3 - what he calls ed3. He recently launched Ed3.gg - a consultancy working to scale education. Subscribe to learn more (http://digest.ed3.gg). In this episode, we cover: Where AI can fill core needs for people in small towns Replacing tasks vs. jobs AI as an idea machine and action catalyst Examples of tasks and applications for AI  Links + Resources Mentioned: CHIPP Website: https://www.chipp.ai/CHIPP Substack: https://substack.com/@chipp?utm_source=about-page Episode 96 with Scott: https://www.growingsmalltowns.org/post/episode96 Small-Town Shout-Out! This week's shout-out is for the city of Wilmer, Minnesota. They've just recently completed their first comprehensive plan for their community since 2009. The cool part? It's the first time in the city's history that community engagement is a priority in their plan. The way they discovered they needed that for their small town was by intentionally including diverse groups of people in the plan's development. That's how you create more engagement, more relevant and interesting output, and more interesting and diverse voices at the table: you invite them and include their perspective. Wahoo, Wilmer, Minnesota!   New Segment Alert! We think some of the best parts about radio shows and podcasts are listener call-ins, so we've decided to make those a part of the Growing Small Towns Podcast. We really, really want to hear from you! We're introducing two new parts to the show:  “Small town humblebrags”: Call in and tell us about something amazing you did in your small town so we can celebrate with you. No win is too small—we want to hear it all, and we will be excessively enthusiastic about whatever it is! You can call in for your friends, too, because giving shout-outs is one of our favorite things.  “Solving Your Small-Town People Challenges”: Have a tough issue in your community? We want to help. Call in and tell us about your problem, and we'll solve it on an episode of the podcast. Want to remain anonymous? Totally cool, we can be all secretive and stuff. We're suave like that.  If you've got a humblebrag or a tricky people problem, call 701-203-3337 and leave a message with the deets. We really can't wait to hear from you!  Get In Touch Have an idea for a future episode/guest, have feedback or a question, or just want to chat? If the information in our conversations and interviews has helped you in your small town, head out to Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, or Spotify, subscribe to the show, and leave us an honest review. They also were making shots and it was thrill to watch so many guys contribute in different ways. Cooper Flagg was Cooper Flagg, Kon Knueppel really did well in the paint, and Isaiah Evans was Showtime Slim.
