We weren't intending to have so many controversial stories this week, but here we are with some spicy topics on our hands. The main discussion was new research on Ethiopian athlete training, described as an “AI-assisted” study. The findings are cool, and we discuss those training points. But looking at the bigger picture, we have major fears about the use of AI writing across exercise physiology literature. The future is going to be weird and sloppy. We also talked about the $500 Adidas trail shoe. David thinks it's a big “screw you” to trail runners. Megan is also concerned, but thinks he needs to chill. You know, the usual. And there were tons of topics with varying levels of spice! Other topics: UTMB scores, Megan's popsicle form, Edmonton Marathon's mis-measurement, Kilian and Jim out of UTMB, age group doping, the blueberry recall, our problems with hog watch, Mike Macdonald's coaching prowess through vulnerability, the Lost Soul Ultra, emails from PED companies, zone compression for speed-oriented athletes, and lots more!As always, remember that many of the points we make are wrong, and if so, it was a joke. But if you agree with it, we were serious. We love you all! This week we’re diving into the second round of the Pearce DH Series, where Jonny and Ben were both back between the tapes. We break down how their weekends went, what worked, what didn’t, and the changes they’ve been making to their bike setup, training and approach to racing. We also get into one of the more interesting ideas we’ve talked about on the show for a while: why, if you really want to get faster, you probably need to be willing to push yourself to the point where crashing becomes a real possibility. One quick thing before we get into this discussion: when we talk about ‘crashing more’, what we’re really talking about is safely exploring your limits in appropriate environments, not taking unnecessary risks. I think that becomes clear in the conversation, but in this modern world, it’s worth saying up front. This one really got me thinking, so sit back, hit play and listen to this episode with me, Ben and Jonny. You can also watch this episode on YouTube here. We learned way too much about toe weightlifting before this great episode! The main topic was a discussion of a difficult, nuanced topic: how to think about power development over time, and what that means in a messy athletic life. It all comes from a “Dear Younger Me” letter that David wrote to his 11-year-old self, and it extends forward to the performance revolution we're seeing across endurance sports. Running is a POWER SPORT. That discussion starts at 55:04.And this one was full of the best topics! Other topics include: the downhill “monster truck” running cue, 5 things we're trying now, Josh Kerr's mile world record, overnight drug testing at the Tour de France, the Enervit lactate gel, why Kate Courtney is our favorite athlete, and questions on adult potty training, uphill treadmill threshold work, the mental side of running hard, and the Leadville documentary. When in doubt, remember: the shockwave machine is not what it looks like.We love you all! This week's Alabama Saltwater Fishing Report covers a changing early-summer bite from the surf to the offshore grounds, plus a new kids fishing tournament on the Eastern Shore. Capt. Kendall Annan of Gulf Rebel Charters checks in from Orange Beach with a red snapper and offshore report, including how to catch better snapper, why drift lines matter, how to deal with scattered grass while trolling, and how his crew is picking up bonus fish like wahoo, king mackerel, mahi mahi, and other pelagics in pretty water close to shore. Capt. Jay O'Brien of Irish Wake Fishing breaks down a strong but complicated inshore trout bite, with fish changing between mullet, glass minnows, krill, soft plastics, MirrOlures, croakers, and smaller bait profiles depending on water quality, tide, moon phase, and salinity. Finding Fish When the Cues Disappear: Trout, Red Snapper, Mahi & Wahoo

Northwest Florida Fishing Report

In this week's Northwest Florida Fishing Report, host Joe Baya covers a challenging early-summer pattern shaped by heavy rain, dirty "root beer" water, wind, changing bait behavior, inshore trout and redfish tactics, red snapper season, offshore dolphin and shark pressure, mahi around scattered grass, and wahoo opportunities. This episode features Capt. Evan Wheeler with Tall Pines Tight Lines in the Pensacola area and Capt. Tyler Massey with Hot Spots Charters. Capt. Evan Wheeler breaks down the Pensacola inshore report, where recent rain, dirty water, wind, and a lack of visual life have made trout and redfish fishing highly variable. He explains how he reads birds, bait, tides, solunar periods, current, water clarity, boat traffic, and "trout sky" conditions when obvious signs are missing. Evan also talks about prospecting with lures like the MirrOlure 17MR and Slick Junior, adjusting depth as water temperatures climb, and why he prefers releasing speckled trout over 20 inches to protect breeder fish. Capt. Tyler Massey gives the Pensacola offshore report, where red snapper season is off to a solid start when weather allows boats to get out. He explains how sharks and dolphins are affecting state-water and federal-water snapper spots, why anglers may need to make longer moves between areas, and how live bait like cigar minnows and LYs can help produce steady keeper fish. Tyler also discusses targeting larger snapper with big dead baits like Boston mackerel and butterflied white snapper, plus mahi fishing around larger grass patches, scattered grass challenges, and recent wahoo bites around the offshore FADs.
