Enduro is back and it feels like it might be turning a corner. After a couple of tough seasons, there's a real sense of momentum building in the sport, and we're here for it. In this episode, I'm joined by Greg Callaghan and Morgane Charre, two riders who've been at the sharp end of Enduro racing for years, to dig into the first two rounds of the 2025 EDR season. We're talking big changes: the return of two-day racing, a fresh energy in the pits, and a crop of new talent shaking things up. Greg and Morgane share their experiences from Pietra and Poland so we get the low down on what went on. We get into everything from course design and recovery strategies to weather chaos, injuries, and the impact of a brand new documentary series that's got people talking. There's still a way to go, but if the start of the season is anything to go by, Enduro's future is looking a whole lot brighter. So it's time to sit back, hit play and listen to this episode with Morgane Charre and Greg Callaghan. This episode is about the rural lawyer shortage, why it's happening, why it matters, and what we can do about it. This is a new-to-us topic, and we're so excited to share it with you because it's way more important and impactful than we realized. Lawyers have a crucial place in our small communities, from providing essential government services like prosecution to supporting small businesses and helping them thrive. Our guest, Hannah, is a law professor and author who took a deep dive into this issue, and we're so glad she did. We learned a lot, and we think you will, too! About Hannah: Hannah Haksgaard is a Professor at the University of South Dakota Knudson School of Law, where she teaches and writes in the areas of property law, family law, and the rural practice of law. Hannah's new book, The Rural Lawyer: How to Incentivize Rural Law Practice and Help Small Communities Thrive, is available on Amazon or through your favorite local bookseller. In this episode, we cover: Why do we have a rural lawyer shortage? Why that shortage matters How can we address it? Resources Mentioned and Projects They Serve:  Hannah's Book: https://a.co/d/1iJyV9j Small-Town Shout-Out! This week's shout-out is to the small town of Burke, SD. We love hearing what different people love about their small towns, and Burke sounds like a fantastic place to live. Meredith loves the Get Fit with Jenny classes, Kelsey's all about the Farmer's Market and the town's gorgeous park space, and Cheyenne appreciates that the town is about love and legacy built on a foundation for the future. Wahoo, Burke, for being amazing in so many different ways! New Segment Alert! We think some of the best parts about radio shows and podcasts are listener call-ins, so we've decided to make those a part of the Growing Small Towns Podcast. We really, really want to hear from you! We're introducing two new parts to the show:  “Small town humblebrags”: Call in and tell us about something amazing you did in your small town so we can celebrate with you. No win is too small—we want to hear it all, and we will be excessively enthusiastic about whatever it is! You can call in for your friends, too, because giving shout-outs is one of our favorite things.  “Solving Your Small-Town People Challenges”: Have a tough issue in your community? We want to help. Call in and tell us about your problem, and we'll solve it on an episode of the podcast. Want to remain anonymous? Totally cool, we can be all secretive and stuff. We're suave like that.  If you've got a humblebrag or a tricky people problem, call 701-203-3337 and leave a message with the deets. When we think of politics, I think a lot of us feel intimidated or like there isn't room for us in the process–we're not “political,” or we don't have time, or we're not the right kind of person. Today's guest shows that being an unlikely politician may actually be the best thing, and why we need more real people in politics (yes, that means you!) About Erin: Erin Oban is a lifelong North Dakotan and proud, Class B kid, raised in a farm family in Ray, ND. Her professional career has included experience as a middle school math teacher, in nonprofit management and educational leadership, and in politics and public service. In 2014 and again in 2018, Erin was elected to represent central Bismarck's District 35 in the State Senate. In 2022, she received an appointment from President Biden to serve as North Dakota's state director of USDA Rural Development, a federal agency responsible for making financing and technical assistance accessible to rural and Tribal communities across the country. When not engaging in issues of importance and finding ways to make an impact, big or small, in her community, Erin enjoys a cold beer on the patio with friends, a cup of coffee with a stranger, live music and comedy, traveling, and being comfy at home in Bismarck with her husband, Chad, and their son and favorite human, Evin. In this episode, we cover: How Erin became involved in the legislative world (kind of by accident!) Why voucher schemes and school choice don't help our small towns How every single one of us has something we can offer and something we can do about the things we care about Resources Mentioned: https://www.ndforpublicschools.com/ https://www.facebook.com/ND4PublicSchools Think Again by Adam Grant Small-Town Shout-Out! Wahoo to the unincorporated community of Guelph, ND (just a stone's throw from Oakes) for showing that no town is too small to do big, cool things when people care. Two cool things we're highlighting: Off the "Sheulph" Guelph purchased the old school building, where they host markets throughout the year and rent out the historic wood gym for events, and a young couple transformed the old train depot into a beautiful Airbnb, giving visitors a reason to come and stay. Good job, Guelph!! New Segment Alert! We think some of the best parts about radio shows and podcasts are listener call-ins, so we've decided to make those a part of the Growing Small Towns Podcast. Flanders Finished, the Roubaix Cobbles Await: Laurence Pithie's Reckoning

Life in the Peloton

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 9, 2025 44:05

Life in the Peloton is proudly brought to you by MAAP I don't know about you guys, but I thought this year's edition of the Tour of Flanders was an absolute classic. It had everything: drama, excitement, chaos, and - of course - a worthy winner. I couldn't wait to catch up with our man on the ground, Laurence Pithie, to hear what happened between the barriers on the bergs of Flanders, and hear how he's feeling ahead of the Queen of the classics; Roubaix. Laurence went into Flanders after a pretty nasty crash in Dwars door Vlaanderen the Wednesday before. Fortunately, although he was a bit stiff and bruised, his legs came good and - after over 6 hours of brutal racing - he rolled home in an impressive 11th place. The TV cameras were pretty fixed on that leading group of Pog, Van Der Poel, Pedersen, and Van Aert for the last few hours of the race, so Pithie's ride went a bit under the radar - but that's one of the things I've loved most about getting these updates from him this season; hearing those stories the cameras miss. Although he's still only 22 years old, the way Laurence talks about these races shows just how experienced and mature as a rider he is. Hearing how he raced this year's edition compared to last year, and the changes he made to his tactics even just over the course of this classics season, it's easy to tell how professional he is; already a real seasoned pro. Laurence isn't racing Scheldeprijs - the midweek race between Flanders and Roubaix - so he actually made the decision to fly home for a few days of normality to reset before heading back to the cobbles for Paris Roubaix this Sunday. Flanders is such a huge event with so much build up, it can be pretty overwhelming - so breaking out the bubble for a few days should let Laurence reset and come back ready for all out war at Roubaix. I mean, just looking at the walls of fans on the roadside all the way around Flanders, I'd need a few days to get my hearing back, let alone my legs! I have absolutely loved these regular phone calls with Pithie and really trying to understand what those 3 weeks on the road are like from the inside. It's no secret that I absolutely love the Spring classics; the ins and outs, the crashes, the stories - I could talk about them all day. it's not all about the podium riders - every single rider in these races is giving absolutely everything, and I think that's why they mean so much to so many people; you've got 180 guys lining up ready to leave everything out there on the road.  Of course, it's not all over - the best is yet to come. This Sunday, the Queen of the Classics, the Hell of the North, my favourite race: Paris Roubaix. Last year Laurence bagged himself a classy 7th place, and he's looking to better that this time around. I could hear the fear in his voice when he told me the weather forecast; after one of the warmest, driest Springs on record - the rain is coming…oh, man, a wet Roubaix! It's the stuff of dreams…or nightmares. Whether the clouds break or not this weekend, I've got no doubt that Laurence is going to get to that iconic velodrome and round out a great Spring classics season with another pearler of a result. Who knows, he might even come home with a cobblestone of his own.  Guys, thanks for following along on this Spring Classics mini series. I hope you've enjoyed these updates from Laurence and the rest of the Red Bull Bora Hansgrohe team as much as I have. In fact, Laurence has actually agreed to give me a call after Roubaix so we can wrap up this series and hear about what went down on the pavé - a cheeky bonus ep. for you all.  Laurence; this is it now, mate, the big one. Go and get it. We're all rooting for you.  Cheers! Tune in tonight on The Untold Radio Network's Discover Sasquatch as we welcome Joe "The Squatchin' Cowboy" Pass to the show. Born in Dallas, Texas, in 1960, Joe spent his early years in the surrounding cities of Irving and Mesquite, where proximity to the Mesquite rodeo sparked a four-year stint as a bull rider. After retiring in 2018, a "no BS" pursuit of Bigfoot began. Inspired by his wife's moniker, "Squatchin' Cowboy," he has since dedicated himself to searching for the elusive creature across thirteen states, including significant time in Oklahoma, along with expeditions to Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wyoming, Kansas, Tennessee, and Georgia. While a sighting remains elusive, he believes he has come close, particularly in Texas, where numerous tracks have been found, though Oklahoma stands out as a prime location. Memorable experiences include encountering ten distinct tree knocks simultaneously, numerous howls and screams, and discovering a small footprint on a mountainside. Hope to see you all there at 8 p.m. EST.

When beginning this journey back in September 2022, I never imagined I would feel comfortable speaking French without thinking too far ahead of myself nor caring if I spoke incorrectly (which is still quite often), but two and a half years later, it has happened! Imperfect French is being spoken and the fundamentals are more confidently understood than ever before. Wahoo! While having attempted to take a French language class here and there over the past two years beginning when I was 20 back in college, I never made it past the 103. It took me three attempts, but finally, I made it all the way to completing FR 204 with the instruction of Washington D.C.'s Alliance de Française. Back in September 2022 I enrolled at the very beginning yet again, and told myself that B1 completion was my goal, so finishing FR 204. As I shared in episode #349, in part four of this series, “On ne comprend jamais tout à fait une langue avant d'en comprendre au moins deux.” And finally, the phrase rings more true than ever. To learn a second language, if one doesn't know well their first, is to more fully know their primary language well. And appreciate their knowledge of it as well. Humility is a muscle strengthened while stumbling over the rules of a new language and not being able to speak near as well as a toddler in the language you wish to know. So with my humility taken to the workout gym regularly twice a week, every week (minus the two week and annual four-week break between courses), attempting to speak French is no longer fearful, but absolutely not perfect. However, as my instructor for the past three courses reminded us repeatedly, practice, practice, practice. That is how we acquire into our long-term memory a language, by using, however, imperfectly from time to time. And so on February 13th, just over a month ago, I celebrating concluding FR 204. What I would like to share with you today are the key lessons learned during FR 203 and FR 204 as our last part of this series - part huit - covered up through my FR 202 class conclusion. Tune in to the episode to discover the 12 things I Learned in French Class So Far . . . , Part Neuf.
