A few months ago, we went over to the ENO London Coliseum to take in the theatre spectacle that is Bat Out of Hell: The Musical. It started in Manchester before moving down to London, and last weekend the entire London company started their run in Toronto at the Mirvish Theatre. Bat Out of Hell is like nothing I have ever seen...or heard. The sound system in that theatre was incredible. And there were so many people in that production, that, for the first time, I had to have help to make sure that we talked to as many of the company as possible. Theo Bosanquet, who you have heard on this podcast before, and I spoke to scores of people that night, and we hope to have the majority of that content up on our site soon. This week, I thought I would bring you the full chat I had with Sharon Sexton, who plays Sloane in the show. We talked about everything from being in such a physically demanding show, various states of dress and how a musical theatre actor can keep their voice in tact during a long run of a show that’s such a big sing.

You may remember our interview with Sharon Sexton in the summer when she told us about plans to stage the first London Irish Short Play Festival. Well, her call for submissions had a great response. Now she and her husband Cillian Donnachadha, who together head the Biscuits for Breakfast Theatre Company, have made their selection. Six plays will be performed at the London Irish Centre in Camden from October 20th for four nights. Two of the successful playwrights – Siubhan McNally and Brendan Kenny came into our studios to talk about the festival. They told Catherine Carroll to expect an entertaining evening with something for everyone – even if you don’t have a drop of Irish blood. This week Camden Community Radio welcomed back Sharon Sexton who came in to tell us about her one-woman show “Somewhere Under the Rainbow” which she’s performing at the Camden Fringe. Sharon was with us in the Spring to talk about “A Fit Wife for a Revolutionary” which portrayed events around the Easter Rising in Dublin in 1916. This time round she’s bringing us a glittering evening with the ups and downs, stories and music of Liza Minnelli. That sequin encrusted performance takes place at 7.30 on Friday 19th at the Camden Irish Centre. Sharon also talked to Catherine Carroll about the emotional last night of the West End hit Billy Elliott and revealed how her theatre company, Biscuits for Breakfast, is hoping to encourage budding playwrights. April 24th is the official one hundredth anniversary of the Easter Rising in Ireland. Commemorations are already underway to mark the week hundreds of people, mostly in Dublin, rose up to fight against British rule. After six days the struggle ended in an unconditional surrender. The seven men who planned the revolt were executed. But knowing that might be their fate they’d already chosen someone to carry on their work: Kathleen Clarke was the wife of one of their number, Thomas Clarke. She was under strict instructions to stay home, guard the secrets, look out for the welfare of the fighters’ families and keep the flame burning. What Kathleen endured during those days has been dramatised by Irish actress Sharon Sexton. She’s performing her one woman play “A Fit Wife for a Revolutionary” at the London Irish Centre in Camden Square from the 29th of March until the 2nd of April. Sharon has appeared in London in The Commitments and is currently in Billy Elliott. She’s hoping to take her play around Britain and to Ireland later in the year. Sharon was keen to look at the role taken by women in the Rising, which has often been overlooked. She originally planned to follow a number of stories but as her research progressed she found there was just so much to say about Kathleen Clarke’s life that she had to focus on her. Catherine Carroll asked Sharon to describe the subject of her play. This month in the World of Whoa! the things that have been stopping host Catherine Carroll in her tracks are a play about the Easter Rising by Sharon Sexton, the sad closure of our favourite local café, and the return of 90’s girlband legends All Saints to Camden. There’s a new Labour Candidate in Town. After more than thirty years as MP for Holborn and St Pancras, Frank Dobson is standing down and the party has chosen Sir Keir Starmer to fight the seat. He’s a Barrister, specialising in Human Rights issues and was Director of Public Prosecutions for five years before leaving the post in 2013. Camden Community Radio caught up with him at Labour’s local office where he spoke about tackling the constituency’s problems, lowering the voting age and how he doesn’t like being called SIR Keir – “It’s Keir” he insists. Our reporter, Ann Carroll, began by asking him what he feels he brings to Camden. The full list of candidates is: Natalie Bennett, Green Party Will Blair, Conservative Party Jill Fraser, Liberal Democrat Party Vanessa Helen Hudson, Animal Welfare Party Shane O’Donnell, Cannabis is Safer than Alcohol David O’Sullivan, Socialist Equality Party Maxine Spencer, UK Independence Party Keir Starmer, Labour Party Package by: Ann Carroll Recording: Marian Larragy More about Keir Starmer :: Leader of the Opposition Interview with Jill Fraser :: Liberal Democrat Party Candidate Interview with Natalie Bennett :: Green Party Candidate Interview with Will Blair :: Conservative Party Candidate AnotherCatherine Carroll interview :: Sharon Sexton as Lisa Minelli Back to Camden Community Radio :: Follow Camden Community Radio on Twitter :: File Download (16:27 min / 15 MB)
