Arlene Phillips is a choregrapher who has been at the top of her game for most of her 81 years. She has worked on the choreography for numerous adverts, musicals, film and videos. She has two daughters: Alana who she had early in her career when she was just about to go to Hollywood to make a film with the Village People called 'Can't stop the Music', and then she had her second daughter Abi when she was 47, when she actually thought her symptoms meant she was entering the menopause. We spoke at Arlene's house, and she told me how she lost her mum at the age of 15, and that her career path feels like a series of Alice in Wonderland moments that were magically presented to her.She also described how back in the 1979, the Hollywood film producer Allan Carr (iconic producer of Grease) greeted the news of her - his choreographer - becoming unexpectedly pregnant, with the offer of a nanny, a PA, a Winnebago on the film set, and a birthing guru called JIm! To say I'm envious is an understatement!Spinning Plates is presented by Sophie Ellis-Bextor, produced by Claire Jones and post-production by Richard Jones. Hosted on Acast. Joining Anna on the podcast this week is the legendary dancer and choreographer Dame Arlene Phillips. From humble beginnings in Manchester, she ended up at dance school in London, where she worked as a live-in nanny for none other than film director Ridley Scott in order to get by. From there, she gained stratospheric success in dance and choreography - and her groundbreaking dance troupe, Hot Gossip, made her a household name in the 70s.As a choreographer and director, her credits include countless shows in the West End, on Broadway, and in film - and her music video credits read like the playlist for the greatest party of all time: Elton John, Donna Summer, Pet Shop Boys, Whitney Houston…you name it, she's worked with them. She was one of the original judges on Strictly Come Dancing, and she even braved the jungle on I'm A Celebrity...Arlene is now in her 80s and is still working on musicals like Guys and Dolls and Grease. She talks to Anna about how dance is the greatest passion of her life and what it brings to her, how social standards and expectations for women are unfair, particularly when they get older, and what ambition looks like for her now at 81. ‘Content is king' has been our clarion call on many a podcast. What we often leave out is the equally important point of how you say something, as well as when you say it and where. As Corporate Affairs and Comms professionals we are often the director of the presentations our spokespeople give to key audiences. The ‘stage' could be a physical stage at a conference, or a virtual results presentation. It could be sitting in a TV or radio studio. Or even just a speech to employees at a town hall.  In many ways, Corporate Affairs practitioners need to be a Trevor Nunn, an Arlene Phillips and a Stephen Spielberg rolled into one with the occasional need to be a Tom Hanks as well. This episode is about the power of performance. How to make your content come alive, to stay memorable and even repeatable.  This is often where Comms professionals realise they need specialist advice. If only they could get access to someone who has been an actor, has been classically trained at somewhere prestigious like RADA, and has worked with CEOs and business leaders to extract the best of performances. Luckily at Little Questions we have just such an expert who is happy to give away some that valuable performance-related stardust on this episode. David Solomon is our guest for this podcast. He originally worked in the City, but left to train at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art and spent the next ten years as a professional actor working at the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre.  This episode is hosted by Matt Young. You can get in touch by emailing podcast@apellaadvisors.com and please consider leaving us a review. Find out more at apellaadvisors.com. David Solomon, Executive Coach - Sun & Moon Training David's professional journey is a testament to versatility and excellence. He began with a BSc in Maths and Statistics from the University of Exeter, followed by a year in the finance sector in the City. His passion for the arts then led him to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he trained and subsequently spent a decade performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal National Theatre. David's career evolved significantly as he became a Business Development Director in Corporate Video for prominent clients such as BP, Goldman Sachs, Heinz, HSBC and UBS Warburg. In 2003, David combined his corporate expertise and professional acting experience to become a Facilitator and Coach. Over the years, he has conducted skills training courses for organisations within the private and public sector, including London Business School, Cisco and the NHS. David is an accredited Executive Coach and a certified practitioner of MBTI and DiSC.  Elizabeth Mobed, Senior Associate - Apella Advisors Elizabeth joined Apella as a Senior Associate in November 2023. Oh my. I can't tell you how moving I found this interview. That doesn't mean it's a weepy one - sometimes, the most powerful exchanges are the ones where you witness the sheer strength it takes someone *no*t to cry. Dame Arlene Phillips is defined by her strength: strength of mind and of body (at 80, she's still hard at work as a hit choreographer). You'll know her as an internationally celebrated jazz and musical theatre legend, who has worked on some of the biggest-selling musicals in West End and Broadway theatre, as well as a number of blockbuster movies. But you might not know she lost her mum to leukaemia when she was just 15, had a challenging upbringing and had her second baby when she was 47 years old (she thought the pregnancy symptoms were signs of perimenopause).  Then in 2008, Dame Arlene was unceremoniously dropped as a judge from Strictly Come Dancing amid accusations of ageism. She only found out when it was reported on the next day's radio news. We talk frankly about how this affected her - and how she's never had an apology from the BBC. We also discuss Dame Arlene's failure to become a ballerina and how this made her feel about her body, her fear of flying and her past inability to stand up for herself. WHAT. A. WOMAN. As always, I'd LOVE to hear about your failures. Every week, my guest and I choose a selection to read out and answer on our special subscription offering, Failing with Friends. We'll endeavour to give you advice, wisdom, some laughs and much, much more.  Have something to share of your own? I'd love to hear from you! [TW//Postnatal Depression, Suicidal Thoughts] 80% of mothers experience "baby blues" but 10% have a dramatic increase in symptoms that lasts beyond the usual 1-3 weeks and can develop into postnatal depression. These symptoms were horrific for my next guest, actor Carryl Thomas, who experienced suicidal thoughts and a breakdown. She found the strength to ask for help and is now a hugely positive voice on helping other parents with baby blues, postnatal depression and finding a sense of the individual self as well as being a parent. Carryl is also mother to successful young performers and she discusses how to manage other parents and children pressures and expectations in an exciting and challenging acting industry. Carryl is an English actress who grew up in South London. Carryl studied Musical Theatre at Mountview and enjoyed a few years in West End Musicals performing in Olivier Award winning shows, such as, My Fair Lady (directed by Sir Trevor Nunn) and Our House (directed by Matthew Warchus) and then made a smooth transition into Television joining Channel 5's original soap Family Affairs as troubled teen Kelly Boulter for 3 years, where she received British Soap and Screen Nation Award Nominations. Carryl subsequently joined the cast of The Sarah Jane Adventures and made a guest appearances in Holby City. Carryl created the role of Keisha in the world Premiere Flashdance directed by Tony Award-winning director Kenny Leon and choreographed by Arlene Phillips. Other work includes filming a new crime series from the producers of CSI and Law and Order, Silent Witness, Emmerdale and Royal Variety performances. As a busy Mother of 4 boys, Carryl continues working as an actress and combines acting with running the Foundation course at Mountview. Carryl's sons seem to be following closely in her footsteps. Her eldest son made his acting debut at the National Theatre in Patrick Marber's adaptation of Three Days in the Country, her second son Oscar made his acting debut in Bridgerton for Netflix, her third son Eiden-River made his debut in Silent Witness for BBC 1 and her youngest, Lake is only 4 but is surrounded by the arts and it won't be long before he decide to join in or indeed run for the hills! The film's director is Khadifa Wong who trained as a dancer and actress but became frustrated by the lack of opportunities for performers of color, and then realized that her true passion lay behind the camera. Producer, Lisa Donmall-Reeve, migrated to film following a very successful twenty year career as a performer that included playing many leading roles on London's West End. And dancer, choreographer and educator, Zak Nemorin - who conceived the film - has appeared in seventeen West End musicals and is the Head of Jazz Dance at Millennium Performing Arts in London. To create the film they interviewed 70 experts - dancers, choreographers, educators and historians - regarding the history of Jazz dance as well as the evolution of its many roots and branches, including Debbie Allen, Josh Bergasse, Al Blackstone, Andy Blankenbuehler, Bob Boross, Camile Brown, Warren Carlyle, Graciela Danielle, George Faison, Thomas De Frantz, Karen Hubbard, Saleemah Knight, Bonnie Langford, Martine Mattox, Jerry Mitchell, Mandy Moore, Walter Painter, Travis Payne, Arlene Phillips, Chita Rivera, Susan Stroman, and Chet Walker to name only a few. Along the way they explore where Jazz dance originated and how it became the dance language of Broadway.  I highly recommend it! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police has met and personally apologised to three victims of grooming gangs in Rochdale for failures in the investigation of the sexual exploitation of children. The apology comes exactly a decade after the 2012 trial that resulted in some members of the gangs being convicted for their crimes. We hear from Maggie Oliver, the former detective who blew the whistle on the police's failure to tackle these crimes. Anya Taylor-Joy's decision to leave school at 16 to pursue a career in acting has certainly paid off. In 2020, in the first month of its release – a staggering sixty-two million households watched her play chess prodigy Beth Harmon in the Netflix mini-series 'The Queen's Gambit'. She discusses her latest film – The Northman - a brutal and bloody viking revenge epic. In August 2018, Kylie Moore-Gilbert, an Australian-British academic travelled to Iran to attend a seminar and conduct academic research. At Tehran airport on her way back home to Australia, she was arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Accused of espionage, she was imprisoned and later convicted and given a ten year sentence. She was released in November 2020 as part of a prisoner exchange deal negotiated by the Australian government. She's written about those 804 days, in a new book The Uncaged Sky. The UK government has been told to stop matching lone female Ukrainian refugees with single men. The UN has intervened following concerns that women and sometimes children are at risk of sexual exploitation. Under the government's Homes for Ukraine scheme, British hosts must link up with refugees themselves, leaving tens of thousands of people to resort to unregulated social media groups to connect. We hear from Louise Calvey, Head of Services and Safeguarding at Refugee Action and Times reporter, Shayma Bakht. With over 100 million record sales, an Academy Award, a Grammy, and an award from The Council of Fashion Designers of America, very few artists have a catalogue that matches the iconic Cher. A new musical, touring the UK - “The Cher Show” - tells the story of the Goddess of Pop's meteoric rise to fame. With over 100 million record sales, an Academy Award, an Emmy, a Grammy, three Golden Globes and an award from The Council of Fashion Designers of America, very few artists have a catalogue that matches the iconic Cher. A new musical, touring the UK - “The Cher Show” - tells the story of the Goddess of Pop's meteoric rise to fame. The director and choreographer behind the show are two Strictly Come Dancing legends - Arlene Phillips and Oti Mabuse. They both join Emma to discuss the new show and their own careers. In August 2018, Kylie Moore-Gilbert, an Australian-British academic travelled to Iran to attend a seminar and conduct academic research. It was her first visit to the country. At Tehran airport on her way back home to Australia, she was arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Accused of espionage, she was imprisoned and later convicted and given a ten year sentence. She spent over two years in prison, half of it in solitary confinement. She was released in November 2020 as part of a prisoner exchange deal negotiated by the Australian government. She's written about those 804 days, in a new book The Uncaged Sky, and speaks to Emma from Melbourne. The Chancellor Rishi Sunak, his wife Akshata Murty and their finances have been in the headlines for several days now. Emma gets the latest from the woman behind the story, Economics Editor for the Independent Anna Isaac. Anna broke the news that Ms Murty was a 'non-domicile' resident - meaning she doesn't have to pay tax to the UK authorities on any income that she earns outside Britain, something that is entirely legal. 48 hours after the story broke last Wednesday, Ms Murty announced that she would pay UK taxes on her worldwide income. The actor Sienna Miller has said she took the step of freezing some eggs at 40, following the pressure she felt to have more children. Professor Imogen Goold has been looking into how women make decisions to delay fertility including in this way – and she questions the assumption often made in the media and in medicine that women are not properly informed, and make poor decisions about how long they can wait to have children. Imogen joins Emma to discuss, ahead of a lecture she is giving at Gresham College called Freezing Eggs and Delaying Fertility: Law, Ethics and Society, at 1pm on Monday 11 April. It can be viewed online for free. Professor Imogen Goold is Visiting Professor of Medical Law at Gresham College, and Professor of Medical Law at Oxford University.

These questions and more make up Seven Stages, the new podcast from The Stage, sponsored by Audible. Our eight episode features designer Es Devlin and was released on Friday, July 10, 2020. From fringe theatres to worldwide stadium tours for the likes of Beyoncé and Adele, there are few worlds and scales untouched by designer Es Devlin. Starting as a designer for theatres like the Bush in west London, she quickly became a renowned stage designer, winning three Olivier Awards along the way. Recent stage work includes Hamlet starring Benedict Cumberbatch, The Lehman Trilogy, Chimerica and The Nether. But in parallel to her stage career, she has become the go-to designer for the world's biggest musicians. Kanye West and U2, Lady Gaga and Take That, The Weeknd and Dua Lipa have all called on Devlin to conjure the engrossing, kinetic designs - mixtures of sculpture, language and light - that are her signature. Here she talks about early inspirations from her childhood on the south coast, through to all-night listening sessions with Kanye West.  Every fortnight, you can join Tim Bano for illuminating, intimate conversations with influential performers and creatives who have lived their lives in theatre. These questions and more make up Seven Stages, the new podcast from The Stage, sponsored by Audible. Our seventh episode features actor Paul Chahidi and was released Friday, June 26, 2020. Actor Paul Chahidi has had an extensive career on stage, highly regarded for his Shakespearean performances at the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre and Shakespeare's Globe. In 2002, he played Maria in an all-male production of Twelfth Night alongside Mark Rylance, to commemorate the play's 400th anniversary. That production subsequently went to the West End and then to Broadway, and brought Chahidi an Olivier and a Tony nomination. But more recently, Chahidi has become a familiar face on TV and film, particularly for his role as the kind and patient Reverend Francis Seaton in the phenomenally successful BBC Three mockumentary This Country. In this episode of Seven Stages, Chahidi talks about his early life from his birth in Tehran, to the difficult moment his father was caught up in the Iranian Revolution. TODAY’S GUEST: Joseph Massie Joseph Massie + Joseph Massie Flowers + UK School of Floristry TOPIC: Training, Competing, & Winning Over the years, we've had the honor of featuring Joseph Massie's work on the Botanical Brouhaha blog many times. From his rose tunnel installation in honor of the 90th birthday of Her Majesty the Queen to the stunning living dress he designed for Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips to wear to the National Television Awards (NTAs), Joseph's work has long intrigued us. But when I sat down with Joseph recently, there was one thing in particular on my mind. I wanted to know how he became the youngest designer to win 5 consecutive Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medals. How does one attain that honor at such a young age? What had he done behind the scenes to prepare for such a lofty goal? Our conversation was casual and fun. Joseph's wit (and hilarious sarcasm) made the time fly by way too fast. Before I knew it, we were flying through his memories of being a 14 yr old teenager looking for a weekend job, winning the British Florist Association Young Florist of the Year, walking away with his 5th Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medal, and buying a school.  I hope you enjoy today's episode as much as I enjoyed the visit with Joseph. What was the first show you ever saw? Your biggest theatre regret? And which production would you choose to watch on a loop for eternity? These questions and more make up Seven Stages, the new podcast from The Stage, sponsored by Audible. The fourth episode featuring choreographer Arlene Phillips is released this Friday, April 3, 2020. Choreographer Arlene Phillips is best known to the general public for her appearances as a judge on BBC One's Strictly Come Dancing, but has enjoyed a diverse and hugely successful career in theatre and music: from her beginnings with pop group Hot Gossip to her extraordinary breakthrough as a stage choreographer on Starlight Express and work on productions ranging from Shakespeare to Monty Python. Seven Stages explores Arlene Phillips' creative journey through dance, beginning with the ‘overnight success' of Hot Gossip and taking in her 35-year association with Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit roller-skating musical, as well as more recent work on shows including Nicholas Hytner's immersive staging of A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Bridge Theatre in London. Phillips explains how John Travolta can help inspire non-movers to dance, shares her insight into how dance training has changed over the years and reveals how babysitting for Ridley Scott led to her big break.
