The Conservative Party has been in Government, either solely or in coalition, for well over a decade but have failed in to bring their values to bear on the economy of the country due to a single decision brought about in 2014 by then Prime Minister Cameron's fear of the rise of the UK Independence Party and the rabble-rousing about the effect of their single policy, which was to cause the UK to leave the European Union. Their leader, Nigel Farage, has long since departed the UK political scene, but the havoc he wrought, lives on. As recently as yesterday, Brexit was being blamed for the current instability in the economy, which will probably last a generation. Having taken over a decade to get into the current mess, the Government has no more than two years to turn it around. Unfortunately, they have neither the expertise nor political nous to do so. The eighty seat majority that was gained in 2019 has been squandered by an incredible degree of arrogance, coupled with failure to deal effectively with either Brexit or the aftermath of the Coronavirus Pandemic. T The Bank of England's Governor who took over from the highly effective Mark Carney around the time that the Pandemic was beginning to take hold has been unable to get to grips with the level of inflation that has brought in its wake, a level of industrial unrest not seen in this country since the eighties, and a recession that is likely to see the economy shrink by at least four per cent over the next five quarters as well as lose the Conservatives the next election. When hundreds of far-right activists gathered in Berlin earlier this month, banners and T-shirts bearing US President Donald Trump’s face could be clearly seen among the crowd. Many waved the American flag. The demonstrators, who later tried to storm the German parliament, had assembled to protest against the German government’s COVID-19 restrictions.Related: Is there a ‘Nazi emergency’ in the German city of Dresden? The US president is a popular figure among far-right groups in Europe. Patrik Hermansson went undercover with far-right groups in the US for one year. Credit: Courtesy of Patrik Hermansson Patrik Hermansson, a researcher with Hope Not Hate, a British advocacy group that campaigns against racism and fascism, says far-right activists see Trump as an anti-establishment figure, someone who rallies against the elites. Swedish-born Hermansson spent a year undercover in 2017 as a member of alt-right movements in Europe and the US. Trump’s time in office “put the wind in the sails of far-right groups and populist parties in Europe,” he said.Just hours after TV networks announced that Trump had won the 2016 US election, French far-right leader Marine Le Pen took to the stage of her party headquarters in Paris and celebrated the result. “Americans have voted, they’ve rejected the status quo. What happened last night was not the end of the world, it was the end of a world,” Le Pen said. She wasn’t alone in her jubilation. In neighboring Germany, the then-leader of the far-right Alternative for Deutschland (AfD) party, Frauke Petry, tweeted "this night changes the USA, Europe and the world!"And in Britain, Nigel Farage, former leader of the populist UK Independence Party, compared Trump’s win to the passing of Brexit a few months earlier, saying 2016 was a year of “political revolutions.”Supporting an American president is highly unusual for far-right politicians in Europe.Related: Artists in Germany fear backlash after far-right party wins big A portrait of Sylvia Taschka Credit: Courtesy of Sylvia Taschka Sylvia Taschka, who teaches history at Wayne State University in Detroit, says US presidents usually represent everything European far-right parties oppose: “Unrestrained capitalism. In other words, you know, a globalized free-market economy and an interventionist, some would say imperialist foreign policy," she said. Trump challenged both of those stereotypes, Taschka says, and upended their long-held tradition of anti-Americanism. Taschka, who was born in Nuremberg, Germany, has witnessed the rise of the far-right in Germany with dismay. As a young child growing up in a city famed for its enormous Nazi party rallies in the 1920s and '30s and later the Nazi war trials, she was well aware that support for far-right views still existed. But those views were never openly celebrated."I was not blind when I lived in Germany. Germany always had a far-right element — even when I grew up — but they were kept more under the lid.”In the last decade, Taschka says that has changed dramatically. But she doesn’t attribute the growing strength of the far-right AfD party to Trump. A changing political landscape and the refugee crisis in 2015 were key driving factors, she says.Related: With far-right topping Dutch polls, EU elections could see Eurosceptics take the leadDutch political scientist Cas Mudde agrees. Mudde, who’s a professor in the School of Public and International Affairs at the University of Georgia, says far-right parties like the National Front in France or the Freedom Party of Austria don’t need to look to Trump for ideological motivation. “They have a much more developed ideological frame than Trump will ever have,” he said.Mudde says President Trump takes little notice of Europe’s populist politicians — but that’s not the case for some of his diplomats. The US ambassadors to Germany and the Netherlands have both been guilty of normalizing Europe’s far-right parties, he says.“One can think of Richard Grenell, in Germany, who was criticized for normalizing the AFD and in the Netherlands, it's even stronger with US Ambassador Pete Hoekstra," Mudde said. It’s alleged that far-right Dutch party leaders met with Hoekstra at the US Embassy to discuss their plans for the future, Mudde says.Former Trump strategist Steve Bannon has also been holding court with far-right parties in Europe over the last couple of years. Bannon plans to convert a monastery outside of Rome into a political academy for ultraconservatives and future populist leaders, a move that has met fierce resistance from Italy’s Culture Ministry. The former White House aide also helped establish a foundation in Brussels aimed at supporting Europe’s far-right parties. But so far, it has received little attention from the parties themselves.French political analyst Jean-Yves Camus, a specialist on the French and European radical right, says parties like the National Front in France have little interest in taking advice from an American. They were doing just fine before Bannon came on the scene, he says.“When Steve Bannon tried to present himself as the man who could unite the extreme right in Europe, he forgot a very important thing: The National Front was a very strong party well before Steve Bannon became known in Washington, DC. So, basically, they did not need him.”The policy of "America first" that Trump promotes has been a mantra of the far-right movement in France since the 1970s. Slogans like “France for the French” or “French first” have been around for some decades, Camus says. While the rise of populist parties in Europe might seem like an anti-establishment vote, Hermansson says it’s important to recognize that many grassroots supporters believe violence is the only way to achieve their goals. In his first few months undercover with far-right groups, Hermansson was shocked at how openly they condoned the use of violence.“I think in the beginning, I was quite surprised over how openly supportive of violence they were, or at least how implicitly they gave credence to even mass shootings," Hermansson said. Hermansson was in Charlottesville the day of the Unite the Right white supremacist rally in August 2017. He was standing just yards away from Heather Heyer when she was killed by James Alex Fields Jr., an alt-right supporter who plowed his car into a crowd of counterprotesters, injuring 19 people and killing Heyer. Screenshot of video footage of a white power rally in Chartlottesville, Virginia, taken by Patrik Hermansson, who went undercover with far-right groups in the US for one year. Credit: Courtesy of Patrik Hermansson Hermansson says the incident was hugely traumatic and although he never expected someone would get killed that day, he had become increasingly concerned that things would turn violent. After Hermansson revealed his cover, he received threats from far-right groups for months afterward. Today, he says he feels relatively safe. The alt-right supporters Hermansson met in Europe would most definitely support a second Trump term, he says. In the last year, populist politicians in Europe have also been tweeting their support for another Trump win in November. Political scientist Mudde says their support hinges on the fact that they share a number of common enemies with the US president. They don’t believe a Trump victory will boost their standing in the polls, he says, but it’s better than seeing Biden get into office.Biden is no friend of the far-right, Mudde says.
Follow me on Twitter for short video highlights: https://twitter.com/AndrewGold_okOn today’s show is Mark Meechan, known online as Count Dankula. In 2016, he made a YouTube video showing how he taught his girlfriend’s beloved pug Buddha to do a Nazi salute – a Sieg Heil – on his command. His command was Gas the Jews. The video quickly went viral, and Mark was arrested and charged with committing a hate crime. He spent time in jail and was fined; a fine he refused to pay.As he’ll explain in more detail, Mark was fired from his job and pretty much unemployable by anyone who had Google. Which is obviously everyone. However, things have recently picked up for him; every time he is mentioned in the paper, his YouTube channel grows – and he now has over 100 million views. He also has 250,000 followers on Twitter, who enjoy his brand of shock humour much in line with the initial Hitler dog routine. They’re a strange bunch his followers – when he shared a photo promoting this podcast, many of them followed me and asked if I could send them photos of Mark’s penis – or if not – my own. I politely declined. I hope some of you newbies are here listening today and will stick around – they’re part of a strange online world in the dark corners of the web full of jokes and memes I don’t quite understand. But it’s not just in the obscure recesses of computer-world where Mark has made his mark. He is often talked about by famous mainstream advocates of free speech, including Ricky Gervais, who brought him up once again just this week.I remember when I heard about the dog joke at the time, I imagined a horrible neo-Nazi, so had little sympathy for him, even if it seemed strange he was being arrested for a joke. Meechan was later in the UK Independence Party, or UKIP, and had some association with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson and American far-right radio presenter Alex Jones, all of which further convinced me his apple was of the bad variety. He refutes this image, and says most of his friends are on the Left; he was nice enough to give me his time to do this podcast, so the least I could do was give him a fair hearing with an open mind.We have a bit of a chat about free speech, humour, offence and where these things collide. Should any joke be illegal? Mark certainly doesn’t think so, and I’m inclined to agree. It seems pretty crazy how the whole thing blew up, and a waste of everyone’s time and money. It can set some bad precedents…that doesn’t mean I give Mark a free pass. Just as I believe strongly in his right to make those jokes, I value my right to criticise them and say they’re in bad taste. For example, a recent video he posted mocking the Beirut explosion might be particularly hurtful for people who’ve just lost loved ones. It may not be illegal, but I consider that worthy of criticism at the least. And he’s perfectly entitled to tell me he doesn’t care.We do get distracted while talking about the Nazi pug incident, and end up waffling about free speech for a while, and come back to his arrest and jail time at the end. Which is fine, because you always listen to the end anyway. Don’t you.Next week is a chat with another controversial American scholar James Lindsay, who has pretty much blown up Twitter by claiming that 2+2=4. In an Orwellian turn, hundreds of thousands of Left-Wing academics have been suggesting the equation actually equals 5, and we believe it’s 4 because of something to do with colonisation. But for now, we’re in Scotland with Count Dankula discussing whether jokes and fried mars bars are offensive. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Nigel Farage has been campaigning for Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union since 1999, when he founded the UK Independence Party, which got more votes in the 2014 European elections than either the Labour or Conservative Parties. Farage then played a leading role as advocate for the “leave” side in the 2016 UK referendum on EU membership. He followed up by organizing a new Brexit Party to keep up pressure for full withdrawal in subsequent UK elections. Farage has been a frequent commentator on FOX NEWS and hosts his own program on British radio station LBC. Alan Sked is a distinguished Historian and Professor Emeritus at LSE in the department of International History. However, what he will most likely be remembered for in political circles is founding the UK Independence Party. Hear the story of Alan's original involvement with the then Liberal Party, standing as a candidate in Paisley in 1970. He came to believe that the EC were corrupt and anti-democratic, and a liability to the British economy. His founding of the Anti-Federalist League which became renamed UKIP, his scathing thoughts on Nigel Farage and his view he had zero to do with the leave campaign win. His dismay seeing what he founded as a Liberal Eurosceptic party being tainted by far right elements and his personal mission to be a thorn in Nigel's side. Alan and I have a wide ranging chat, however, mostly centred on Brexit. What I found is we agree on so much more than we disagree on.

As kids worldwide strike for action on climate change, James and Tom take a look at a group who doesn’t share their sense of urgency: Europe’s far right. The UK Independence Party has a long history of denying climate science while Marine Le Pen of the French National Rally uses global warming to whip up fears about mass arrivals of refugees. In Hungary, the Fidesz party of Prime Minister Viktor Orban broadly accepts the need to reduce emissions but does little to contribute to reaching that goal. The picture can vary markedly from country to country as a recent report by Adelphi, a German research organisation, demonstrates. Click here for Adelphi’s deep dive mapping climate agendas of right-wing populist parties in Europe. We also take another listen to our interview from December with Bas Eickhout, the Dutch green who’s vying for a top job in Brussels. Eickhout shares his thoughts on the far-right's climate record and he talks about the bungled tax on fuel that helped spark the huge yellow vests protests in France.
Ask a politician or a MSM reporter about "No Go Zones" and there is a very good chance that they will tell you that they don't exist. That response is based not on fact, but an attempt to prevent the public at large from knowing that there are places throughout the Western nations where the only law is Shari law and the only authority is Muhammad. Today I'll have conversations with Raheem Kassam, editor-in-chief of Breitbart News London, and a former chief adviser to UK Independence Party leader Nigel Farage; and Kel Fritzi, host of RFB radio and IAW radio, about the truth of "No Go Zones" and why we all should care. On 8 November, as they stood in line to cast their votes, Americans were told by pollsters and pundits that, while close, the presidential race would be won by Hillary Clinton. As the results came in, precinct by precinct, many in the political establishment watched the unfolding story in disbelief. It was a similar feeling to that felt by many in Britain's so-called ‘chattering class' when, on June 24, they woke to the news that the UK had voted to leave the EU. Both were seismic political shocks. Neither was predicted by pollsters. What next? After two extraordinary electoral shocks, both of which challenge the established order, and with elections coming up in France and Germany, should we expect more? On 23 November, the Pears Institute for the Study of Antisemitism in collaboration with the Birkbeck’s Department of Politics brought together a panel of leading commentators and scholars to discuss the implications of Europe’s migrant crisis for the rise of the populist right. The UK Independence Party, Danish People’s Party and French Front National won nearly 30 percent of the vote in the 2014 European elections on an anti-immigration platform. Since then, Europe’s migrant crisis has further raised the significance of the immigration issue among western European publics. Populist right parties such as the Sweden Democrats, Austrian Freedom Party and True Finns have surged in the polls. The Freedom Party has doubled its vote share in Austrian local elections. In Germany and Sweden, opposition to immigration has risen dramatically. At the same time, many voters support the plight of the refugees which some observers hope will damage the populist right. Speakers: Chris Bertram is Professor of Social and Political Philosophy at the Department of Philosophy, University of Bristol, and blogs regularly on issues related to migration. David Goodhart is director of the Demos Integration Hub and founder of Prospect magazine. Matthew Goodwin, University of Kent, and author of two books on UKIP, Revolt on the Right: Explaining Support for the Radical Right in Britain (with Rob Ford) 2014, and the upcoming UKIP: Inside the Campaign to Redraw the Map of UK Politics (Nov 2015). Daphne Halikiopoulou, University of Reading, is co-author of The Golden Dawn’s ‘Nationalist Solution’: Explaining the Rise of the Far Right in Greece (2015). Ten years ago Jill Fraser stood in the Holborn and St Pancras constituency as the Lib Dem candidate. It was said she gave Labour a bit of a scare. She’s back again with another attempt to take the seat held for more than thirty years by Frank Dobson, who’s retiring. She spoke to our reporter Ann Carroll about her political beginnings, her determination to represent the local community even if that puts her at odds with her party, and fish and chips. The full list of candidates is: Natalie Bennett, Green Party Will Blair, Conservative Party Jill Fraser, Liberal Democrat Party Vanessa Helen Hudson, Animal Welfare Party Shane O’Donnell, Cannabis is Safer than Alcohol David O’Sullivan, Socialist Equality Party Maxine Spencer, UK Independence Party Keir Starmer, Labour Party Package by: Ann Carroll Interview with Will Blair :: Conservative Party Candidate Interview with Keir Starmer :: Labour Party Candidate Interview with Natalie Bennett :: Green Party Candidate Back to Camden Community Radio :: Follow Camden Community Radio on Twitter :: File Download (15:28 min / 14 MB)
Next year’s General Election will mark a watershed for Camden as the long serving Labour MP for Holborn and St Pancras, Frank Dobson, will be retiring. His party have yet to announce who will take his place as candidate, but the Conservative Party have chosen theirs. Will Blair is already busy campaigning while holding down a full time job. He took time out of his schedule to come into our studio and talked to Ann Carroll about his fondness for Camden, his background, handling social media and the threat from Ukip. She began by asking him why he was standing. The political profile of the Green Party has been rising sharply, not least in Camden where its Leader, Natalie Bennett, is standing as a prospective parliamentary candidate in Holborn and St Pancras. The seat’s been held by Labour’s Frank Dobson for more than 30 years but he’s now standing down. The constituency is on the Green’s list of its top 12 targets and Natalie Bennett says she’s going all out to win it. She took some time from the campaign to speak to Camden Community Radio’s reporter, Ann Carroll. There’s a new Labour Candidate in Town. After more than thirty years as MP for Holborn and St Pancras, Frank Dobson is standing down and the party has chosen Sir Keir Starmer to fight the seat. He’s a Barrister, specialising in Human Rights issues and was Director of Public Prosecutions for five years before leaving the post in 2013. Camden Community Radio caught up with him at Labour’s local office where he spoke about tackling the constituency’s problems, lowering the voting age and how he doesn’t like being called SIR Keir – “It’s Keir” he insists. Our reporter, Ann Carroll, began by asking him what he feels he brings to Camden. In the first of a four-part series leading up to the UK general election, FT political correspondent Kiran Stacey visits Great Yarmouth to explore the rise of the UK Independence Party along England's east coast. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The UK Independence Party topped the UK polls in the recent European elections putting pressure on the Conservative and Labour Parties to reconsider their position on immigration and the UK's relationship with the EU ahead of the 2015 general election. Hardtalk speaks to veteran Labour MP, Jack Straw, who held successive senior positions in government between 1997 and 2010. Is the Labour Party under Ed Miliband in tune with voters and capable of winning next year's general election?(Photo: Veteran Labour MP Jack Straw)
Euroscepticism has a long tradition in Britain, particularly among conservatives. But the Fresh Start parliamentary group is bucking that trend. Fresh Start sees itself as a counterweight to the eurosceptic wing of the Tory party. The parliamentary group has about 100 members, among them Julian Smith from North Yorkshire. While Smith believes Europe needs reform, he staunchly defends Britain remaining in the EU. Smith has been facing criticism in his district, where the UK Independence Party has been gaining ground. But he enjoys support from industry and business.
Ahead of European elections in late May, Kiran Stacey and Jim Pickard take an in-depth look at the rise of the UK Independence Party and its leader Nigel Farage. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
In eurosceptic circles it is widely stated that European criminal justice threatens to undermine the basic values of the common law, and this is put forward as a reason why the UK should 'withdraw from the Europe'. This argument was recently put forward by Nigel Farage, of the UK Independence Party, in an article he wrote for The Independent. In this presentation Professor John Spencer - one of the authors of the Corpus Juris project - subjects the argument to analysis. Professor Spencer is Professor of Law, Co-Director of the Centre for European Legal Studies, and Honorary President of the European Criminal Law Association. He has written extensively on criminal justice matters and has been involved in a number of law reform projects. The UK Independence Party has been in the news a lot lately: two of its supporters in Rotherham had their foster children taken away from them because of their UKIP affiliation; Conservative Party deputy chairman Michael Fabricant suggested the Tories might be wise to enter into a pact with UKIP at the 2015 general election; and rumours surfaced of a possible defection of several Conservative MPs to the anti-EU party. And then, of course, there were three Westminster by-elections in which UKIP rattled the main parties. This week, Rosie Goldsmith profiles UKIP's leader Nigel Farage.

As another wave of financial fear sweeps through the Eurozone, with Spain seemingly staggering towards a bail out and Italy not far behind, the voices of the continents Eurosceptics grow louder. Most prominent among them is Nigel Farage, leader of the UK independence party and self-styled scourge of the EU establishment in his role as a member of the European Parliament. In Europe's crisis he sees political opportunity; but is he playing with fire?(Image: Nigel Farage)
