My guest this week is Jan Brierton, a mam, a fashion stylist, and a poet. Her first collection What Day Is It? Who Gives a F*ck was published in 2021 after Jan's first ever poem went viral during lockdown. Everybody Is a Poem: Midlife in Rhymes is Jan's second collection published by New Island. In this pocket-sized book Jan riffs on menopause, midlife, the mental load, friendships, relationships, loss, and self-acceptance. On its release, Jan's second collection made the top 10 paperback non-fiction book charts. Plain-speaking and completely relatable, each of these 52 poems are served with Jan's signature combination of humour, wit, and poignancy. This is poetry for everybody. Since the publication of her debut book, Jan has appeared on RTE Nationwide, TV3's Six O Clock show, RTE Radio 1's Brendan O Connor Show, Ray Darcy Show, 2Fm, 98FM, The Irish Times Women's podcast and Mamia & Me with Amy Huberman. Jan's poems have been shared on social media by Jo Whiley and Emma Barnett (BBC Women's Hour) with over 30K views. Jan is the resident poet on the Ray Darcy Show on RTE Radio 1. With her passion for keeping poetry accessible, Jan's poems come to life with her engaging live performances. In May 2024 Jan opened with her hero Dr John Cooper Clark in Dublin's 3Olympia Theatre, where she debuted her homage to his world famous ‘I Wanna Be Yours' with her modern love poem ‘You'll Always Be For Me' She has read her poems on The Word and Manifesto stages at Electric Picnic, The London Irish Centre, The Mutiny Theatre, St Annes Park Rose Festival, Five Lamps Arts Festival, Drogheda Arts Festival, Dublin City Libraries and the Liberties Festival. Jan's poems ‘But' and ‘Sound Body' have featured in both of Aoibhin Garrihy's poetry anthologies. Jan brought her live show Wild Words to Dublin's Ambassador Theatre in November 2024, celebrating the power of poetry and prose with Donna Ashworth, PJ Gallagher and Emmet Kirwan. 2025 will see Jan open for John Cooper Clark in The London Palladium, The Nottingham Royal Concert Hall and the Manchester Co-Op Arena. Jan continues to write and perform alongside her mam duties and her career as a creative director and fashion stylist. This week, Sinead Burke sat down with Jarlath in the London Irish Centre in Camden for conversation like no other conversation featured in this series. Together they sift through the biggest moments in her incredible rise to prominence over the last three years. She tells Jar about the remarkable circumstances that lead to her Ted Talk and how her life changed almost immediately afterwards. She opens up about her stage fright and anxiety just prior to the filming and the four questions she now asks her self before taking on any sort of work. Jarlath is keen to know how Sinead finds working with the fashion industry at a time when publicity seems to trump actual change. He asks Sinead what are the things that she beats herself up about the most and gets a really unusual answer he wasn’t expecting. What’s it like to deal with Oprah? What exactly is the limit and danger of self-kindness? What can we do to help make the changes Sinead is chasing? It’s all here in a remarkably expansive interview with one of the most influential and stylish Irish women of the last 50 years. Recorded at the London Irish Centre, Camden, 25 January 2017. At the heart of the past year's commemoration of the 1916 Rising has been consideration of Ireland's evolving relationship with the United Kingdom — from being an integral part of it, to Home Rule devolution (realised in the North but not in the South), to Commonwealth dominion, sovereign republic (albeit partitioned), and finally co-members of the European Union. An implicit assumption in this exercise has been the contrast between an Irish state of flux and the apparent stability of the UK. Brexit has now turned this assumption on its head, with major implications for the European Union, the Northern Ireland peace process and the UK itself. To discuss these and related matters History Ireland editor Tommy Graham was joined for a lively round table discussion by Dan Mulhall (Irish ambassador to the UK), Mary Kenny (writer & journalist), Michael Kennedy (Royal Irish Academy's Documents on Irish Foreign Policy), and Martin Mansergh (vice-chair of the Advisory Group on Centenary Commemorations). The Hedge School series of podcasts is produced by History Ireland and the Wordwell Group. April 24th is the official one hundredth anniversary of the Easter Rising in Ireland. Commemorations are already underway to mark the week hundreds of people, mostly in Dublin, rose up to fight against British rule. After six days the struggle ended in an unconditional surrender. The seven men who planned the revolt were executed. But knowing that might be their fate they’d already chosen someone to carry on their work: Kathleen Clarke was the wife of one of their number, Thomas Clarke. She was under strict instructions to stay home, guard the secrets, look out for the welfare of the fighters’ families and keep the flame burning. What Kathleen endured during those days has been dramatised by Irish actress Sharon Sexton. She’s performing her one woman play “A Fit Wife for a Revolutionary” at the London Irish Centre in Camden Square from the 29th of March until the 2nd of April. Sharon has appeared in London in The Commitments and is currently in Billy Elliott. She’s hoping to take her play around Britain and to Ireland later in the year. Sharon was keen to look at the role taken by women in the Rising, which has often been overlooked. She originally planned to follow a number of stories but as her research progressed she found there was just so much to say about Kathleen Clarke’s life that she had to focus on her. Catherine Carroll asked Sharon to describe the subject of her play.
