Bill Hicks: Revelations - Variations On 11/29/1992 at the end of a very successful sold-out tour of the UK, Bill performed in London at the Dominion Theatre to a raucous, enthusiastic capacity crowd. This performance became his last recorded special, Revelations, which many consider to be Bill in peak form. When Revelations was originally broadcast on TV and subsequently released on DVD and LP, the length was one hour and 13 minutes long, being edited to that more time-slot-friendly length. But, the actual show that Bill performed that night was an epic, running just under two hours long. Now for the first time the entire audio of the show is being released as Bill performed it that night...with all 43 missing minutes! You're gonna have "the time of your life" as hosts Bobby and Kristina discuss 1996's Big The Musical on episode sixteen of My Favorite Flop. ABOUT BIG THE MUSICAL Based on the 1988 film of the same name starring Tom Hanks, Big The Musical tells the story Josh Baskin, a 12-year-old boy who grows up overnight after being granted a wish by a Zoltar Speaks machine at a carnival. With the aid of his best friend, Billy, he must cope with his new adulthood while finding the machine so that he can wish himself back and more. The musical features a book by John Weidman, music by David Shire, and lyrics by Richard Maltby, Jr. Composer David Shire was inspired to adapt Big for the stage after his wife, actress Didi Conn, watched the film on pay-per-view in her hotel room one night and told him how great a musical it would make. Over the next six years, he was able to amass a team that included frequent collaborator lyricist David Maltby, Jr., book writer John Weidman, director Mike Ockrent, and choreographer Susan Stroman, all of whom were not quite convinced that the musical would work, but continued to contribute to the creative process anyway until it eventually ended up on Broadway. Big The Musical was one of the first major blockbuster films to be translated to the musical stage. While the practice has become much more common today, the Broadway community was far less welcoming of this at the time of its premiere. Despite the musical's strengths, it struggled to find an audience, and after failing to land a Tony nomination for Best Musical, it closed as a puzzling $12 million dollar loss of its $10 million dollar investment. A heavily-revised national tour traveled the country two years later under the helm of show doctor Eric Dr. Shaeffer and was a big success and almost returned to Broadway. The show made its UK and Ireland in 2016 in Dublin starring "Strictly Come Dancing" winner and The Wanted vocalist Jay McGuiness as Josh. The production transferred to London's West End at the Dominion Theatre in 2019 with McGuiness reprising his role. It is a true privilege to have the ‘punk poet laureate of protest’ on the show.Ed’s beautiful and hypnotic debut solo album ‘Earth’ is out now, as is Billy’s critically acclaimed new book ‘The three dimensions of freedom’, a pocket-sized exploration of personal liberty and the responsibilities of citizenship. “The burning bush is our entire ensemble; and they sing the voice of God so it’s many voices in one” As The Prince of Egypt – the new musical based on the blockbuster film – opens in London, director Scott Schwartz took time out of rehearsals to talk to Judi Herman about what is essentially the story of Exodus. Two young men, raised together as brothers in a kingdom of privilege, find themselves suddenly divided by a secret past. One (Ramses) must rule as Pharaoh, the other (Moses) must rise up and free his true people, the Hebrews, and lead them out of Egypt. Scott elaborates on themes of the show and their relevance today, discusses the vision of the creative team, and reveals what it’s like working your father – in this case, three-time Academy Award-winner Stephen Schwartz (Wicked, Godspell). Stephen has written 10 new songs for the show, including the love duet, ‘Never in a Million Years’, sung by Luke Brady (Moses) and Christine Allado (Tzipporah). On her way out, Judi also stopped off at the costume department to gain fascinating further insight from one of the assistant costume supervisors, Lydia McDonald, who talked through some of the stunning design sketches by Ann Hould-Ward, as well as the materials and trims that go into the making. The Prince of Egypt runs until Saturday 31 October. 7.30pm, 2.30pm (Thu & Sat only). From £19.50. Dominion Theatre, W1T 7AQ. www.theprinceofegyptmusical.comRead our review of The Prince of Egypt on the JR blog.
