We are now deep into the Semiquincentennial commemoration of the events that led to American Independence. 2025 represents a watershed year as we commemorate the Battles of Lexington & Concord, Chelsea Creek and Bunker Hill. Just in time to help us remember these events, and why we are commemorating the 250th, Professor Abby Chandler of UMass Lowell, has launched a new journal, Remembering the American Revolution at 250. In Chandler joins us to talk about this new project, along with Professor Marianne Holdzkom, author of its first article, "Based on a True Story; Remembering the Revolution through Film." Heather Humphreys on life after politics.
I've always been an early riser, and I've adopted the habit of saying Morning Prayer from the Daily Office since I became an Episcopalian in 2008. It is part of my commitment to my Rule of Life (Chapter 18) that I have developed as a Fellow of The Society of St. John the Evangelist, an Episcopal monastery in Cambridge, MA. A few years ago, I discovered a free app on my phone that makes keeping the Daily Office easy but meaningful. I enjoy it as the Scripture verses, Canticles, and Saints' Commemorations are all in one place for Morning Prayer, Noon Day Prayer, Evening Prayer and Compline. I don't always get to stop four times a day, but I always start my day with the Morning Prayer. There is a recorded audio version so that I can feel like I am reciting it in community. Here's a link for your desktop: https://prayer.forwardmovement.org/pray. On your phone look for: “Forward, Day by Day.” I just discovered the best feature. If you click on the three lines in the upper left corner of the phone app (or “Prayer List” on your desktop), you can compose your own personal prayer list. This list is local to the device you create it on, so it is not shared among devices or other people. Your individual prayer list will pop up when it is time for prayers and thankgsivings. It reminds me to pray for people near and far, lifting up their names for healing, discernment, and reconciliation. I am often frustrated with the time I spend on my phone, endlessly checking weather, or scrolling to see what my friends are doing on social media. This Advent, I'm monitoring my usage but also recognizing than some technology can make my world better. I believe that the Forward Movement Day by Day Daily Office is one positive example and I hope that more people can start their day with Scripture and praying for each other. Please send me a note if you have any questions about the Forward Movement app. I'm not a paid employee and don't get paid for recommending it. I don't often make recommendations on my blog, but this one is worth the time I spend with it. Blessings, my friend,Agatha

Commemorations took place in Israel this week to mark 7 October, 2023, when 1,200 people were killed by Hamas gunmen and 251 were taken hostage into neighbouring Gaza. Twelve months later, the bloodshed in the region has also spread to Gaza and Lebanon and Iran has been drawn into the conflict. Host Luke Jones hears from Eylon in Tel Aviv and Adam in England who are frustrated that the plight of the hostages can sometimes appear to be forgotten, especially on the global stage. He also hears what life is like for three young Israelis in their 20s and the anxiety of daily rocket strikes, explosions and gunfire.

Rishi Sunak is struggling to recover after his blunder during the D-Day commemorations. The Prime Minister left the commemorations early, deciding to return home to continue his election campaign instead of joining other world leaders to pay their respects. He's apologised for the decision, saying that “on reflection, that was a mistake and I apologise.” UK Correspondent Rod Liddle told Mike Hosking that for a period of time over Saturday morning into Sunday afternoon, it looked like he might be standing down. He said that it was a terrible misjudgement, and it's very difficult to see how he can recover from the blunder. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

World leaders and surviving veterans of the Normandy landings gathered on both sides of the Channel on the 80th anniversary of D-Day. In France, Joe Biden, Emmanuel Macron and Princess Anne have been taking part in commemorations. And in the UK, King Charles, Rishi Sunak and Prince William have been paying tribute to those who fought to "replace tyranny with freedom", in a service at the key departure point of Portsmouth. Biden delivered a speech at the commemorations linking the allied efforts on D-Day with the challenges posed by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. US Correspondent Richard Arnold told Mike Hosking that he then said in a separate interview that Vladimir Putin is “not a decent man” and is struggling to keep his country together while continuing the assault. It finally happened. The Bank of Canada has cut interest rates for the first time in four years. Many borrowers are relieved and hoping for more cuts in the future. And: The EU's climate change monitoring service says the global average temperature for the last 12 months was the highest on record. Despite calls for urgent action, we don't seem to be listening. Plus: It's been 80 years since allied soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy. For most attending today's commemoration in France they have no living memory of the war. But for a dwindling number of veterans facing a world still engulfed in conflict, paying tribute to their fallen comrades is as important today as it has ever been.

AP Washington correspondent Sagar Meghani reports President Biden is set to make his first state visit to France next week.
From the earliest days of the Third Reich through the end of the war, there were organized efforts to rescue Jewish children from the Nazis. Perhaps as many as 10,000 were rescued in this way, but without their parents. They ended up in a variety of countries and had diverse set of experiences. In addition, the story of the Kindertransport has worked its way into the cultural memory of the Holocaust, particularly in the United Kingdom. In this episode, I spoke with Amy Williams about the incredibly complex history of these operations and the ways in which they have been commemorated. Commemorations for the 22nd Anniversary of September 11are done, but the impact of 9/11 lives on, as do the terrorists' plans to continue to attack the West. While the White House and the Department of Homeland Security focus on so-called ‘Domestic Terrorists', and neglect the threat of Radical Islamists, like Al Qaeda, ISIS and the Taliban, these terrorists are feeling empowered and ramping up! Indeed, Al Qaeda published a 22nd Anniversary commemorative edition of their glossy magazine, Ummah Wahidah (meaning One Ummah, one global Islamic community) to threaten a new attack on the U.S. that will be WORSE than 9/11. On the cover, they even use a quotation from the Qur'an to make their intentions clearer. At the same time, CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations),terrorist-sympathizers linked to Hamas, masquerading as a civil rights group, has filed a lawsuit against the Federal Government to discontinue the Terrorism Watchlist. What could go wrong? Also in time for the 22nd Anniversary, one of the 9/11 detainees at Guantanamo, Ramzi bin al-Shibh, has just been declared incompetent to stand trial. Hear how his attorney convinced the judge that he has PTSD, psychosis and delusions, and what he blamed it on. Radical Islamists are continuing to make headway. Their recruitment is up - while American military recruitment is down. And 9/11 families are still struggling to get Congress to pass a bill that will hold terrorists and Saudi Arabia ‘accountable'. Hear whoand what are holding it up. Meanwhile, the death toll from 9/11 still mounts - as First Responders and inhabitants near Ground Zero quietly succumb to cancer and other illnesses. It's all a part of September 11 Terror 2.0….
