An airhacks.fm conversation with Kevlin Henney (@KevlinHenney) about: first computer was a Sinclair ZX81 with 1K of memory, programming in Basic and later Z80 assembly language, creating simulations like volcano explosions and n-body problems as a teenager, transitioning to the ZX Spectrum and other early home computers, studying physics at university but becoming more interested in programming, learning fortran, getting his first programming job at a small software house in Bristol where his boss had a wall of books on programming languages and paradigms, becoming self-taught through reading these books, developing an interest in AI and philosophy of mind which led to pursuing a master's degree in parallel computer systems, creating a virtual machine for a Lisp-based actor model, learning about the occam programming language based on Communicating sequential processes (CSP) for transputers, discovering Object-oriented programming and being fascinated by modularity and encapsulation, encountering Java in the mid-90s as a free downloadable language with platform independence, appreciating Java's familiar C-like syntax while offering object orientation without low-level concerns, using Java primarily for training and consultancy work rather than application development, discussing the evolution of Java features like inner classes (Java 1.1) and interfaces, explaining his unique perspective on interfaces coming from distributed systems experience with IDLs, reflecting on his work with various distributed Java technologies like RMI, Jini and JavaSpaces, continuing his career as an independent consultant, trainer and speaker with strong involvement in the patterns community Kevlin Henney on twitter: @KevlinHenney

Ivan Zhao is the co-founder and CEO of Notion. Ivan shares the untold story of Notion, from nearly running out of database space during Covid to finding product-market fit after several “lost years,” and the hard-won lessons along the way.—What you'll learn:1. Why you sometimes need to “hide your vision” behind something people actually want—what Ivan calls “sugar-coating the broccoli”2. How Ivan and his co-founder persevered through multiple product resets and complete code rewrites3. Why Notion prioritized systems over headcount, keeping the team small and focused even at scale4. Why Ivan believes in craft and values as the foundation for product development, balancing technical excellence with aesthetic sensibility5. The surprising story of how Notion nearly collapsed during Covid when their single database almost ran out of space with only weeks to spare6. Community-led growth tactics7. Ivan's unique journey from a small town in China8. His book does appear to be a discontinuous jump in understanding. - Do you know if there was any physical reason that the Greek "elements" were associated with particular geometric shapes? - The Pi Day thing is great; I think I might get a shirt. - To what extent did your own path/work intersect the heydays of Bell Labs and notable people therefrom? - Did you ever use an Amiga computer? - With mobile devices we are basically going back to terminals. - I used to have a Silicon Graphics Indigo 2 sitting on my desk for AutoCAD and 3D modeling. Those were great machines and fun times! - Speaking of McCarthy and those days, do you think that sticking to s-expressions as opposed to m-expressions and Wolfram Language-style ones impeded Lisp's adoption historically?

The fifth international John McCarthy AI Summer School event will take place on the 12th and 13th of September 2024. This year's theme is AI for Sport Minister Dara Calleary announced the launch of the fifth John McCarthy AI Summer School, themed 'AI for Sport' in the RDI hub on Friday 28th of June. Sport is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by technological advancements with data at its core. For professional athletes, data analytics offer critical insights that can significantly enhance performance metrics. For fitness enthusiasts, data provides a systematic approach to monitor progress and achieve personal fitness objectives. For spectators, data enriches the understanding of live action, whether in the stadium, on the field, or on the screen. John McCarthy AI Summer School in Kerry The premise is both straightforward and compelling: enhanced knowledge leads to improved performance and enjoyment. The sophisticated tools and data analytics that enable the attainment of personal bests are now widely accessible, benefiting not only elite sportspeople but also the general public. We are delighted to announce that the following partners - RDI hub, Microsoft Ireland, Munster Technological University, the SFI ADAPT Centre for AI Driven Digital Content Technology, AI Ireland, along with new partners Red Chair Recruitment, Skillnet Innovation Exchange, Connected Hubs and Western Development Commission, will joint host a hybrid Artificial Intelligence Summer School event on the 12th and 13th of September 2023. This year's summer school will take a deep dive into the area of AI for Sport with both core and applied research tracks. With a stellar international lineup over two half days, this will be an unmissable event, including keynotes and panel discussions along with networking opportunities. The core research elements of this summer school will appeal to professors, post docs, PhD students, researchers and graduate students in the fields of AI, Machine Learning and Natural Language Processing. The applied elements have a broader appeal and are accessible to anyone with an interest in Artificial intelligence and the various way it can be deployed. The RDI hub building is dedicated to John McCarthy as a tribute to the Stanford University computer scientist. McCarthy was one of the founders of the discipline of artificial intelligence and his father was born in Cromane, near Killorglin in Co Kerry. In the late 1950s McCarthy invented LISP which became the programming language of choice for AI applications. AI has had a truly transformative effect on our lives in recent years, particularly with the advent of Generative AI. AI technology has risen to prominence in personalising the content we consume daily, such as customised sports highlights and tailored fitness advice. However, AI's potential in sports extends far beyond this. From enhancing player performance through data analytics to revolutionising fan engagement with interactive experiences, AI is set to redefine the sporting landscape. We look forward to discussing these diverse applications with our speaker panel. Our aim is that the John McCarthy AI Summer School will become a calendar moment for the development of AI and the sharing of knowledge. Every year we bring you a stellar international lineup of the best and brightest minds working in Artificial Intelligence. The full speaker list will be announced shortly. Minister Dara Calleary had this to say at the event launch: 'I am delighted to be here today in the RDI hub in Killorglin to announce the launch of the fifth John McCarthy AI Summer school, which will take place on September 12th and 13th. The AI summer school brings together the brightest minds in the field of Artificial Intelligence, across both core and applied research. We are excited to announce that this year's theme will be AI for Sport. The RDI hub has long been a centre of excellence in the field of Artificial Intelligence with its strong fo...

ALGOL is one of those topics that's haunted the show for a while. It comes up any time we talk about programming languages, and with good reason. Many of the features and ideas found in modern languages have their roots in ALGOL. Despite that influence, ALGOL itself remains somewhat obscure. It never reached the highs of a C or LISP. In this series we are going to look at ALGOL from 1958 all up to 1968, keeping a careful eye on how the language evolved, how it's problems were addressed, and how new problems were introduced.
