Bassist Tom Mendel has had a long and storied career as a bass player. He has been ‘based' (pardon the pun) in Chicago for decades. He's played in the pit for long running shows like ‘Lion King', ‘Wicked', ‘Hamilton', ‘Moulin Rouge', ‘Billy Elliott', ‘Kinky Boots', and many more. But his music has taken him all over the country. He has toured with the likes of Lainie Kazan. He's played club dates with Christine Ebersole, Mandy Gonzalez, Hollis Resnik, to mention just a few. Tom has also recorded extensively, playing hundreds of jingles in Chicago's recording houses. He's also played numerous sessions from Los Angeles to New Orleans to New York. Tom has also been an advocate for union musicians for decades. Much of that work was for those who make their livings playing in the theatre musicians. In fact, he was an early member of the Theatre Musicians Association. He served 7 years as the president of the Chicago chapter, before spending 5 years as the national president of TMA. Tom has also worked on many union committees, negotiating contracts for higher wages and better working conditions with Chicago theatres, as well as for touring musicians. And that's just the tip of the iceberg as far as his work on behalf of performing professionals. But Tom is more than ‘just' a musician. He's also a Master Scuba instructor, a yoga enthusiast, and is not only a proud father, but has recently joined the ranks of his favorite new title: grandpa! Basis for bassist I first met Tom in 1987 when I joined the cast of Chicago's longest running musical up until that time, ‘Pump Boys & Dinettes'. We performed that show together for nearly three years at Chicago's Apollo Theatre. We've been good friends ever since. We know each other's family and have shared the best and worst of those times. Professionally, we've had the good fortune to work together many times over the years. And because the world of pit musicians is not that big, we have a lot of friends and colleagues in common. ‘Bassist Tom Mendel' is just the jumping off point for this conversation. Come check out this friendly chat between two good friends. I think you'll enjoy getting to know this admirable and accomplished man. India is renowned for its rich dance traditions, but rarely for ballet. Pia Sutaria is changing that. Pia's career has been immensely varied – from ballet to modern, from TedX talks to musical theatre. She's also an RAD dance teacher, and in 2018 set up the Institute of Classical & Modern Dance in her home city of Mumbai. It aims to broaden access to dance, and particularly ballet, for those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to pursue it. Students from the ICMD are already training in some of the world's best vocational schools. Pia tells us how Billy Elliott brought her to ballet, and why dance matters to her. Pia Sutaria is a registered teacher of the Royal Academy of Dance. She also received the Disney Theatrical Scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music, London and performed in the UK tour of the musical Bombay Superstar, with Welsh National Opera and more. Her performances in India and beyond include touring internationally with Navdhara India Dance Theatre. She has represented global brands and gave a TEDx talk on dance and classical ballet in India. In 2018, Pia founded the Institute of Classical & Modern Dance (ICMD) to make vocational training in dance accessible to young artists in India. The school has successfully sent students on scholarships to top performing arts institutions in Europe, UK and USA. If there was a huge asteroid hurtling toward Earth threatening to destroy life as we know it and you could see one more show before you die, what would it be? It can be anything you want - a show you've seen before, one that you wish you'd seen, or something you've made up entirely. What would be YOUR Last Show on Earth? This is the podcast in which we ask a special guest the big, BIG question that nobody ever needed (or indeed) bothered to ask. Our guest this episode is Killian DonnellyOriginally from Ireland, Olivier nominated Killian Donnelly has worked extensively in theatre playing leading roles in shows such as Kinky Boots (a show which gave him his Broadway debut in 2016), Billy Elliott, The Commitments, Memphis, Les Miserables, The Phantom the Opera and Fun Home.He met Alistair when they worked together in the West End production of Les Miserables (subsequently working together on the Les Miz movie), and he first worked with John when he played Raoul opposite John's Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre. This was when the legendary and much missed viral online video series John vs Killian was born - in which John and Killian competed against each other in increasingly absurd challenges backstage. He lives with his wife and two children in Dublin but is currently spending most of his time in London where he has returned to the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables at the Sondheim Theatre.Links:Killian sings Bring Him Home on The Late Late Show https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlQlXagXzocMade in Dagenham in Concert tickets https://lwtheatres.co.uk/whats-on/made-in-dagenham-10/John vs Killian - Guitar Hero https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQvXxF91H4QJohn vs Killian - Twister https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJWUoNdG_OwIMPORTANT This is final episode of Season 1 and next year we will switch from a monthly release schedule to a twice yearly "seasonal" schedule. We will return with Season 2 in May 2024 and will release a bunch of episodes in a brand new weekly format with Season 3 landing in October! We are also looking at ways of getting you, the listener, more involved with the show...more details coming in the New Year...Happy Christmas and thanks for listening!Hosted by John Owen-Jones and Alistair BrammerMusic written by John Owen-Jones and Alistair BrammerMusic performed by John Owen-Jones, Alistair Brammer and John QuirkRecorded & edited by John Owen-Jones and Alistair BrammerA 2023 John Owen-Jones Associates Productionwww.johnowenjones.com/podcast Hosted on Acast. Today's episode is the second half of my recent discussion with author Grace Barnes whose fascinating new book it titled: National Identity and the British Musical — From Blood Brothers to Cinderella. In this conversation we explore how British national identity has, and often has not, been dramatized in British musical theater, and among the topics that we discuss are the musicals Blood Brothers, Mama Mia, Billy Elliott, The Last Ship, Bend It Like Beckham, and the current smash hit SIX, and, of course, the tremendous impact and domination that the mega musicals of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh have had on the British musical theatre industry.  We also discuss why UK critics so seldom give any serious consideration to musical theater , the near complete absence of female voices in British musical theater, and the future of British musicals. Grace Barnes is an independent scholar, director, and playwright who has worked as an associate and resident director on productions of My Fair Lady, Fiddler On the Roof, Into The Woods, Sunset Blvd, The Witches of Eastwick, Martin Guerre, West Side Story, and Guys And Dolls in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Australia. She has a PhD from the University of Technology in Sydney and her previous book is titled Her Turn Onstage — The Role Of Women In Musical Theatre. My guest today is Grace Barnes whose new book it titled: National Identity and the British Musical — From Blood Brothers to Cinderella. This is a fascinating book that explores how British national identity has, and often has not, been dramatized in British musical theater, and she does this by examining the content and context of musicals such as Blood Brothers, Mama Mia, Billy Elliott, The Hired Man and the current smash hit SIX. And, of course, she also considers the tremendous impact that the "mega musicals" such as Les Miserable and The Phantom Of The Opera (both of which are still running in London), as well as the tremendous power and domination that Andrew Lloyd Webber and Cameron Mackintosh have had on the British musical theatre industry.  In addition she explores why UK critics so seldom give any serious consideration to musical theater and — in contrast to the way American musicals are often discussed — why British musicals are so often overlooked in national debates regarding culture and identity. This is the first part of our recent conversation in which we discuss all of that and more! Blake, Kofi & Rich take a look at one of the most popular British films in history.Directed by Stephen Daldry, "Billy Elliott" follows an 11 year-old boy (Jamie Bell) from a working-class family who discovers a talent and passion for ballet while his father (Gary Lewis) and older brother (Jamie Draven) struggle through the historic 1984-85 UK miners strike. Under the direction of a local dance teacher (Julie Walters), Billy's talent develops to the point where he earns an audition with the National Ballet School. As a young dancer, dance grad and one-time professional, Blake identifies with much of what Billy goes through. Blake shares his own stories of scorn and misunderstanding related to gender conformity. We also look at the profound love and grief experienced by Billy's dad Jackie - and consider the importance (and challenge) of seeing your children for who they really are. #fatherhood #billyelliottmovie #parenthood #raisingyoungmen #raisingstrongchildren #movies #growingup

“Ali & Ava” de Banar : à la croisée de la comédie romantique et du cinéma social

Pop Corn

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 2, 2022 5:36

BROADWAY NATION

In today’s episode I focus on the Broadway Musicals of the 21st Century. Perhaps surprisingly, the current generation of Broadway creators has re-embraced and reinvigorated both the “Musical Comedy” and the “Musical Play” in ways that I think would make Rodgers & Hammerstein very proud. At the same time they have introduced something sort of new – the “Jukebox Musical”. In the process, and with a major assist from the Walt Disney Company, the Broadway Musical has achieved new heights of prosperity, popularity and cultural relevance in the 21st Century. The new-fashioned, 21st Century musical comedies highlighted in this episode include: Hairspray, Avenue Q, Monty Python’s Spamalot, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Legally Blonde, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, The Drowsy Chaperone, Curtains, The Book of Mormon, Kinky Boots, A Christmas Story, A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love And Murder, ELF, Something Rotten, The Prom, Beetlejuice, and the upcoming Mrs. Doubtfire.       The most recent major innovation in musicals are shows that are often called “Jukebox Musicals”. This new kind of musical emerged at the dawn of the 21st Century and has become enormously popular and somewhat controversial. What exactly is a “Jukebox Musical”? My definition is that they are musicals that tell their story using a collection of previously existing songs rather than songs that were written specifically for the show. Most often these are pop songs that were not originally conceived for the theater. There are really two different kinds of jukebox musicals: biographical musical that dramatizes the life and times of a legendary performer, songwriter, group, or band and is built around the music and lyrics they created and/or made famous. - and shows like Mamma Mia! that employ pre-existing hit songs to tell new, original stories. Finally, that brings us to the “Musical Play”. This durable form is still going strong!   The first hit “musical play” of the 21st Century was Wicked. With music & lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and a book by Winnie Holtsman, this musical is adapted from Gregory Maguire’s best-selling 1995 novel titled Wicked: The Life And Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. So far, Wicked has been playing 17 years on Broadway and is the 5th longest running show of all time.  Wicked has been followed by a string of vibrant, popular and acclaimed musical plays that do not shy away from tackling important and provocative subject matter. These include The Color Purple, Spring Awakening, The Light In The Piazza, Grey Gardens, In The Heights, Billy Elliott, Next To Normal, Memphis, Once, Fun Home, Hamilton, Waitress, Dear Evan Hanson, Come From Away, The Great Comet, The Band’s Visit and Hadestown. Not one of them is a conventional love story. Seven of them deal with issues racial equity, social justice and inclusion. Four of them deal with mental health issues. Six of them include queer leading characters. Almost all of them focus on transgressive women who reject and break the rules of society. And almost all deal with the challenges of forming and maintaining a community. And these three themes – Racial and social justice, Transgressive women and community -- dominate the 21st century musical comedies as well. None of this should be a surprise because -- as we will discover on the next episode of Broadway Nation -- these have been the primary and most prevalent themes of the Broadway musical throughout its history. One of these 3 themes are at the center of almost every musical, and they are what have made this art form so powerful, popular, and subversive. Ian was like Billy Elliott, but couldn't dance. He was a good talker. At 28 stone 8lb, with a skinhead haircut, one of Ian's first jobs was as a bouncer in Durham. He took the heat out of situations. Diffusing situations meant that Ian never got hit! He's no longer 28 stone either. "I decided to stay alive!". Afterwards, he went to university in York to become a school teacher. However, getting his first teaching assignment was a challenge. He'd turn up for interview in a big black suit and headteachers wouldn't hire him. So the leafy lane schools in the North East were a step too far. A special school actually headhunted Ian. Big Ian as he fondly calls himself. They said come in for a day, the kids will like you. He went in for the day and left eight years later. "I learnt more from those students in that special school than I ever taught them." Crime Reduction Unit - Secondary Schools Ian worked for the Home Office, setting up crime reduction units in secondary schools. This was to prevent crime on the streets. He was an inspiration there too. He helps reduce exclusions from 22 to zero. He'd go home and watch WWF wrestling and Man U and Liverpool on the TV so he could talk and relate with his pupils. When you teach for the Home Office, that means work is pretty gritty on its day. But it made him. A Keynote Speaker Inspiration?   Many speakers have one good talk. It just happened. He does stuff and then people see him as an inspiration. He speaks people listen and get motivated. YOU MUST watch this short clip from Ian. Tell me it's not an inspiration!! http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Ian-Donaghy-Inspiration.mp4 How can you help other people? All life, says Ian, is a series of interactions. Our lives are a series of snapshots. So make sure each one of those frames is spot on. Dementia People sometimes ask Ian why he bothers to take people with Dementia to the beach, after all, they'll forget they were there tomorrow. Not the point, Ian says. At the time they are on the beach, eating and ice cream, riding the donkey, they'll know how happy they are. It is a snapshot of happiness. He's happy to see a smile in that minute. How did Ian Get into Dementia? After 18 years in education, dealing primarily with people with learning difficulties. He was speaking at a conference and was discussing how we've got it all wrong. Why compare Michael, Susan and John against the same measures. Shouldn't we be aiming to produce the best Susan we can? We compare completely different people with different schools. School makes you fall short of so many people's expectations, despite the fact that we are all different. We have different skills. Ian's educational style was to focus on the individual in front of him. He cannot turn them into something they are not. Someone saw this and said that would be amazing if you did this in care. Can you take learning disabilities and apply it to people with dementia. He became the Dementia Detective. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Dementia-Detective.mp4 Will you break your Kit Kat with someone? Dear Dementia One of the most popular books there is on Dementia was written by Ian Donaghy. GET IT HERE:  https://www.amazon.co.uk/Dear-Dementia-Laughter-Ian-Donaghy/dp/1874790868   Ian was frustrated. He'd seen too many families who didn't know what had happened. It is simple.

Craig Robert Young talks to Caroline Feraday and Claire Bullivant about being a working actor in LA, becoming a YouTube sensation and a rather dodgy job he once held at the Playboy Mansion. He is currently directing his own sitcom about Hollywood celebrity assistants, and together with the wonderful Eileen Lee, he runs the brilliant Brits in LA social group (a must for all Anglophiles to join). Son of a coal miner in real life, Craig explains how his first professional job was aged 10 when he played a coal miner’s son in Barry Hine’s 'The Price of Coal' at the Nottingham Playhouse. Yes, very Billy Elliott. At 17, while at drama school in London, fame beckoned when a chance audition for pop band ‘Deuce’ steered Craig off to pop stardom for a few years. He then became the new face of British MTV, hosting the hugely successful show 'Select' and also spent time hosting 'GMTV' (the UK’s version of the Today Show). Then in 1999 a starring role on the award winning show 'Dream Team' beckoned where Craig played villain Alex Wilkinson. Craig’s next move was a big one, to Hollywood in fact,  where he has starred in a plethora of hit shows including: Melrose Place, 10 Things I Hate About You, NCIS, Lost, What About Brian andFringe to name but a few. Revolution: Russian Art 1917-32 is an exhibition at the Royal Academy where the title tells you what to expect but what surprises and delights lie in wait for visitors? Dan Gillespie Sells - lead songwriter with pop group The Feeling - has written a musical: Everybody's Talking About Jamie. In honor of National Tap Dance Day (May 25), Movie Addict Headquarters revisits a lively discussion with avid dance fan Fausta Rodriguez, co-host Jazz Shaw, producer Nikki Starr -- and host Betty Jo Tucker, a former happy tapper. This encore presentation is dedicated to Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, the great tap dancer whose birthday on May 25 is celebrated every year as NATIONAL TAP DANCE DAY, having been signed into law by President George W. Bush back in 1989 to celebrate tap dancing as an American art form. This episode features a conversation about favorite dancing in the movies, so tap dancing is included, of course. But you will also hear opinions about other forms of dance such as tango, ballroom and ballet. Which dancers will be named the best by the show’s diverse panel? Among the contenders are: Gene Kelly, Cyd Charisse, Gregory Hines, Eleanor Powell, Fred Astaire, the Nicholas Brothers, Ginger Rogers, Debbie Reynolds, Donald O’Connor, Leslie Caron, Ruby Keeler, Vera Ellen, Christopher Walken. Some of the films under consideration during this episode include: Footloose, Assassination Tango, The Bandwagon, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Singin’ in the Rain, Shall We Dance, Billy Elliott, West Side Story, Saturday Night Fever, Dirty Dancing, Take the Lead, Flashdance, Hairspray, Easter Parade and Tap.

April 24th is the official one hundredth anniversary of the Easter Rising in Ireland. Commemorations are already underway to mark the week hundreds of people, mostly in Dublin, rose up to fight against British rule. After six days the struggle ended in an unconditional surrender. The seven men who planned the revolt were executed. But knowing that might be their fate they’d already chosen someone to carry on their work: Kathleen Clarke was the wife of one of their number, Thomas Clarke. She was under strict instructions to stay home, guard the secrets, look out for the welfare of the fighters’ families and keep the flame burning. What Kathleen endured during those days has been dramatised by Irish actress Sharon Sexton. She’s performing her one woman play “A Fit Wife for a Revolutionary” at the London Irish Centre in Camden Square from the 29th of March until the 2nd of April. Sharon has appeared in London in The Commitments and is currently in Billy Elliott. She’s hoping to take her play around Britain and to Ireland later in the year. Sharon was keen to look at the role taken by women in the Rising, which has often been overlooked. She originally planned to follow a number of stories but as her research progressed she found there was just so much to say about Kathleen Clarke’s life that she had to focus on her. Catherine Carroll asked Sharon to describe the subject of her play.
