If you have a love-hate relationship with planning (like I do) or think planning sessions are unattainable for a busy, overwhelmed mom - today's episode is for you. I'm joined by Sarah Hart-Unger - practicing pediatric endocrinologist, mom of 3, writer, and co-host of the Best Laid Plans and Best of Both Worlds podcasts - for a refreshing, grace-filled conversation about planning that actually works in real life. Sarah shares the core ideas behind her book, Best Laid Plans: A Simple Planning System for Living a Life That You Love , including her flexible approach to nested goals, why “being perfect has no place in planning,” and how a solid master calendar and task management system can dramatically reduce mental load. We also talk about why moms of school-aged kids may benefit from seasonal (quintile) planning instead of quarterly planning, how to use an “ideal week” as a helpful reality check (not a source of guilt), and why making space for fun is a critical — not optional — part of any planning system. This episode is full of practical wisdom and encouragement for anyone who feels overwhelmed, behind, or convinced they “don't have time” to plan. Sarah Hart-Unger is a practicing pediatric endocrinologist, writer, and podcaster with a passion for planning. She loves to share her systems and techniques with others through courses and live planning retreats. She lives with her husband and three children in South Florida. She has been writing most days for over 20 years at theshubox.com. When good things become too much, it's often not because we're doing the wrong things — but because we're doing too many of the right ones. In this re-aired episode of the Organized On Purpose Podcast, we're talking about the quiet burnout that happens when we say yes out of guilt, obligation, or fear of disappointing others, rather than out of discernment. Many women who love to serve find themselves with schedules filled with meaningful commitments — meetings, projects, ministries, and responsibilities that once felt like blessings. Over time, those good things can begin to drain us and crowd out the rest, margin, and clarity we need to thrive in this season. In this episode, I gently walk you through three questions for faithful discernment to help you pause before your next yes and ask: Is this life-giving or depleting? Am I responding out of guilt or obedience? Does this align with what God is asking of me right now? We talk about: The hidden cost of always saying yes Why guilt is not a healthy guide The difference between serving faithfully and overgiving How to say no without shame Creating rhythms that support what God is calling you to in this season This episode is for women who want to live faithfully, serve generously, and still have space to breathe — without burning out.
In this episode, I invite my fellow mom-entrepreneurs to embrace the power of owning your decisions, especially during the busy holiday season. Through my own stories—like choosing comfort with yoga pants at an event or taking a break from business to prioritize family—I show how simple, intentional choices can bring more presence and less stress.I encourage letting go of guilt and the heavy burden of societal “shoulds,” reminding you that saying no or stepping back doesn't diminish your worth as a business owner or a mom. I candidly share how I navigate external judgments and internal pressures, and remind you that it's always okay to re-decide and shift direction as your priorities change. By reflecting on budgeting and redefining holiday traditions, my hope is to inspire you to align your decisions with your values and confidently do what works best for your family and your business. This episode is a heartfelt reminder to simplify, trust your choices, and show up authentically in both your work and your home. Paring Down: Realistic minimalism to live more intentionally
Are you actually prepared for an emergency—or just surrounded by emergency clutter? In this episode, I take a clear-eyed look at emergency supplies and why so many of us over-prepare for rare, dramatic scenarios while under-preparing for the things most likely to happen. We unpack how common cognitive biases—like the availability heuristic, denominator neglect, and “dread risk”—shape our fear-based stocking habits and quietly lead to clutter, overwhelm, and false security. I walk through five realistic categories of emergency preparedness: 1. Evacuation 2. Getting trapped at home 3. Obscure emergencies 4. Everyday sickness 5. First aid and explain how to pare each one down so it's usable, accessible, and actually helpful when stress is high. If emergency prep has ever felt overwhelming—or like another excuse to hold onto too much—this episode will help you rethink what safety really looks like! Hey Clutterbugs! Overconsumption is costing you cash, time, and calm. And it's crowding your home! In this episode, I walk you through a simple No-Spend Challenge, practical spending rules that fit real life, and the home routines that help you buy less and use what you already own. It's a great way to start the New Year. Decluttering, believe it or not, is a financial strategy! We'll talk about the hidden costs of clutter (duplicate purchases, food waste, storage fees), how to track real savings each week, and the mindset shifts that stop impulse buying. I'll share quick wins—like a 20-minute Weekly Financial Reset, pantry “use-up” lists, and 3-minute decluttering tasks—that reduce decision fatigue and protect your budget. There's that one thing you keep meaning to deal with. The closet. The paperwork. The room you close the door on. You tell yourself you'll get to it, but somehow you never do. In this episode, I talk about why it's not that you don't know where to start. It's that doing it alone feels like too much. I share the simple first step most women are missing, why decluttering stalls halfway through, and how support changes everything. I also introduce Finish It With Grace, a side-by-side session for the woman who's ready to stop circling the same project and finally get it done. If you've been stuck, overwhelmed, or frustrated with yourself, this episode is for you.

This episode dives deep into why so many women feel overwhelmed at home — not because they're unmotivated or “bad at organizing,” but because the brain responds to clutter, decisions, novelty, transitions, and loneliness in predictable ways. I am answering four listener questions, weaving in practical organizing strategies and specific scientific concepts discussed in the episode, including: Decision fatigue and temporary disorganization bias — why dumping grounds appear during remodels and life transitions The novelty effect, executive function fatigue, and habit friction — why systems stop working even when you set them up well The Zeigarnik effect and task-switching overload — how unfinished tasks drain mental energy and fuel the “I can't follow through” spiral Micro-wins and dopamine — why breaking projects into 5-15 minute tasks changes everything Freeze responses, low internal reward cues, cognitive overload, and living alone — why some women feel powerless to begin You'll also hear faith-rooted encouragement on stewardship, caring for your home as part of wellbeing, and showing up for yourself the same way you show up for others. Whether your home is “not that bad” or completely overwhelming, this episode gives you the scientific understanding — and the small, doable steps — that help you finally move forward. In this episode, I'm talking to moms who are running a business and a household—and are tired of feeling behind. I share the story of my appendix surgery, when our home felt totally out of control, and how hiring a household helper/babysitter through a local Facebook group changed everything. We'll unpack what a household helper actually does (laundry, errands, tidying, returns, sheets, kid help) and why you don't need to be “bursting at the seams” to justify getting support. You'll hear common signs it's time to get help—like constant resentment, never feeling caught up, or canceling work blocks because the house feels chaotic. We'll also dig into the mindset and money blocks: believing you “should be able to do it all,” feeling guilty for wanting help, or thinking it has to be a huge financial commitment. You'll leave this episode with permission to outsource at home, practical ideas for starting small, and a new way to think about trading a little money for time, capacity, and mental peace. She admits it's hard to part with things while Gao Yue introduces her to “断舍离”/'the art of letting go of unnecessary items.—————————————————————————————————安娜:哎,我怎么会有这么多东西啊! —————————————————————————————————If you're enjoying this story, there's so much more waiting for you inside maayot:✅ Daily bite-sized stories that suit your level ✅ native audio ✅ One tap Pinyin, explain in context for words and sentences ✅ Writing and speaking exercises with natives' feedback ✅ Track your learning streak — never lose your momentum! Not using these features yet? I feel it and I know you do too. That decluttering and planning energy is starting to bubble up but who has time to deal with that? No one. We're all stuck in this purgatory of sorts where Thanksgiving is done but there's a lul until the December holiday that you celebrate. So I'm sharing best practices to harness that energy, use it for good, but all delay doing anything about it, for just a little bit. Decluttering You are waiting for all your purchases to arrive. You know what people are getting or even yourself and you want to purge the old. But wait! If you purge toys now, what will they play with until Christmas (this will be my example because that's the holiday I celebrate)? I recommend starting a slash pocket for decluttering alone. This way in the future you will remember what you brain told you to declutter. You have too much going on right now and there will be time for decluttering in the last week of the year. However around the 22nd or 23rd you may wanna get a little head start. It would be fun to reward your kids for their efforts too. If you are in the Productive Home Solution, you can find certificates for the kids and it's just a fun spin on the tasks. They want to make room for the things they asked for too. Planning You already are experiencing that dreaming energy of what could be for 2026. Your brain is begging for a new planner and expressing dreams for 2026. In episode 681, I shared the 4 ways I will plan from now to the end of the year, and that first step is dreaming. So go ahead, make a slash pocket just for goals, then write down what comes to mind on index cards, place in your Sunday Basket for safe keeping till you have the time and energy. The time will be Planning Day because they match up to when planning energy is high for most people. Power of the Sunday Basket@ The Sunday Basket in general is for capturing ideas when your brain has them so when you have time and energy you can do what your brain wanted you to do. In the Holiday Blitz Planning Day we divided the Sunday Basket into three Sunday Baskets®. We we delaying some ideas into the New Year Basket®, we had holiday ideas, and then one remained our weekly use Sunday Basket®. You always get a workbook that has some planner components and gets you in the planning mindset. Finally, you get to do the planning that was brewing in early December. On December 29th at noon (CST), you will once again reorganize your Sunday Baskets® for new purposes. Planning Day Prep is first and you will clean out your weekly Sunday Basket® for a fresh start for the new year. This is when you take notes and "guides" about your family holidays and file that slash pocket back into the Household Operations Binder. This day is for filling in the workbook with the "ground work" information that will support you completing the workbook during Planning Day, go through that planning slash pocket you created, relabeling your slash pockets, and labeling your tear pads. Now you are prepped and ready for Planning Day on December 31st at 10 am (CST). You will spend 4 hours planning the next 4 months. It's time, you have the time and the energy has been bubbling this whole time, go nuts, plan away. Remember that planning slash pocket? Now you get to decide what you take action on that your brain wanted you to remember. You will plug in your goals, play with routines you want to establish to support your goals, as well as plan around your family and work responsibilities. My childhood ritual was to get a new planner in December, May and August. I just loved leaving old objectives in the past, dreaming of what I could be, I could do, and what did I want? And now I get to teach you how to do the same for you and your house.
