Terrence Stamp, Hugo Weaving, and Guy Pierce star as a trans woman and two drag queens who embark on a road trip across Australia, encountering good, bad, and dangerous challenges along the way.

This Pride Month, Mark Radulich and Sean Comer celebrate the flamboyant, fearless, and fiercely important legacies of three trailblazing films: The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert (1994), To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995), and Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001). While each tells its own unique story—from a desert drag road trip across the Australian outback to a heartfelt exploration of gender identity through glam rock cabaret—they are all interconnected by the historical arc of queer visibility in cinema. These films didn't just showcase LGBTQ+ characters—they centered them, in eras where that was still an act of rebellion.Priscilla broke ground internationally, putting Australian queer cinema on the global map and normalizing drag culture long before RuPaul's Drag Race made it mainstream. Just one year later, To Wong Foo introduced Middle America to drag queens with heart, humor, and dignity—starring mainstream Hollywood actors like Patrick Swayze, Wesley Snipes, and John Leguizamo at the height of their careers. Then came Hedwig, a deeply personal indie musical about gender, trauma, and artistic expression, which has since become a cult favorite and a cornerstone of trans representation in modern film and theater. Together, these films reflect the evolution of queer and trans narratives—from coded subtext to full-throated declarations of identity and humanity.More than just products of their time, these movies pushed culture forward. They asked audiences to look beyond binary norms and embrace love, transformation, and self-expression in all forms. Whether through sequins, ballads, or beat-up buses, these stories assert—loudly and proudly—that queer people, drag performers, and trans individuals deserve joy, complexity, and a place in the cinematic canon. And as we revisit them in 2025, their messages feel just as urgent, defiant, and beautiful as ever.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Jason Donovan won the hearts of millions alongside Kylie Minogue in the Australian soap Neighbours; then his debut album was the biggest seller of 1989 and he topped the UK singles chart 4 times. In the 1990s he reinvented himself in musical theatre with acclaimed roles in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and now he's playing Frank-n-furter in the Rocky Horror Show tour. Its safe to say he knows a thing or two about eye catching costumes, as does Great British Sewing Bee judge and designer to the stars Patrick Grant. His book - Less - is a plea to us to stop buying so much rubbish, buy better, mend more and think about wearing woollen knit swimming costumes or at least cotton running gear. The comedian Sophie McCartney is best known for poking fun at parenting and her viral mum-parody to the tune of Ed Sheeran. But she likes a costume too - thigh high silver boots and leather shorts for her latest show One Foot In the Rave, full of advice on how best to turn 40, how to parent questioning teenagers and say a loud "no thanks" to a midlife crisis. With music from BBC Folk Award winners The Young'Uns and indie-soul singer Mychelle who's supporting Jorja Smith on tour. Presented by Stuart Maconie Produced in Salford by Olive Clancy
An emotional deep dive into the untold history of The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, a terrible, racist and transphobic film. Rabia looks at the lives of the three drag queens and one trans woman that it was based on (Cindy Pastel, Strykermeyer, Lady Bump and Carlotta) and the erratic behavour/Shakespearean motivations of troubled writer/director Stephan Elliott. Deep research uncovers a complex story with no clear heroes or villains - a tale as beautiful as it is tragic. This is a bonus episode that originally appeared on Totally Trans. A chance find at age 14 at Flinders Street Station led Tim Chappel to a life of silver lamé, sequins, girdles, and an Oscar. Costume designer, Tim Chappel can't remember all the places he lived, growing up on Army bases around the country, and overseas. His one constant interest was nature. He'd look for stick insects to pin into his collection and draw endless terrestrial orchids. Tim was ready to focus his life on botany. This all changed when he found a copy of French Vogue at Flinders Street Station in Melbourne. He was entranced by the glamour of the clothes he saw, and felt an instant connection to the tailoring.Tim was creating shorts for bartenders and costumes for drag queens at Sydney's Albury Hotel when he was asked if he would like to design the costumes for an Australian film called The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. This episode of Conversations touches on film-making, the Oscars, award season, LGBTQI+, queerness, Hollywood, Oprah, Tom Cruise, Los Angeles, Army Brat, military families, orchids, flowers, Guy Pearce, Hugo Weaving, Stephan Elliott, Terence Stamp.

We're here and back with one of the best films of the 90s, To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar It's Pride month and it was beyond time for us to review it here and who better than Mikey to talk about the long lasting legacy this film has had over the past 30 years. There are so many things that have changed and moved forward but there is still more to be done. We talk a lot about the incredible characters and arcs throughout, how this is one of Mikey's foundational films, the FASHION and BODY, the endless cameos, and how quotable this entire script is. Giles was 12 when he watched Abba win Eurovision in 1974 and was instantly besotted – and thus required to spend the next 20 years wrestling with The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name. His thunderingly funny, fond and illuminating book – My My!: Abba Through The Years – traces their story, looks at the snobbery and critical mauling they endured and figures out how they made records so universally popular and which still move him to tears 50 years later. It's also the best example of any book we've read that can explain the mechanics of music to a non-musician. It's highly recommended, as is this podcast which alights upon … … a 50 year-old story – “for 42 of which they haven't existed”. .. the vicious early press reaction - “calculatingly commercial”, “dispassionate” … … the divine clunkiness of their early TV appearances. … the sense of the melancholy we've attached to their music - and why. ... the immense value of splitting up early and never reforming or publicly falling out. … the immaculate construction of Dancing Queen (which opens with the second half of the chorus) and why “there are two types of wedding disco – ones that start with Dancing Queen and terrible ones.” … the maturity of Abba's lyrics – about marriages, relationships, children and other subjects pop music rarely tackles. … why Abba Voyage is so affecting that he's seen it three times. … and Muriel's Wedding, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and other key factors in The Comeback. He may be an actor, broadway star, and producer, but that doesn't mean he is immune from the every day challenges of love, fame, and loss. In this candid interview, Kevin Spirtas shares insights of being a gay man in limelight and how he learned to unhide himself. About Kevin KEVIN SPIRTAS has become one of Hollywood's most watched talents. From Broadway Star, to TV Heartthrob… From his humble beginnings on Broadway at age 18 in A Chorus Line, to ‘standby' for Hugh Jackman in The Boy From Oz— Spirtas is most recognized around the world for his eight year stint as Dr. Craig Wesley from NBC/peacock Daytime Drama: Days of Our Lives, as well as the cult classic film sequels: Friday the 13th – Part VII: The New Blood, and Wes Craven's: The Hills Have Eyes – Part II. Before departing the soap in 2000, Spirtas had great fun playing his DAYS character opposite Matt LeBlanc's ‘Dr. Drake Ramory' on FRIENDS: The One That Could Have Been- Part 1. In 2008 the 30-year acting veteran produced the NY Shakespeare Festival reading-presentation of Don Cummings': A Good Smoke, starring Academy Award winning actress, Meryl Streep, and directed by Tony Award winning director, Pam McKinnon. Shortly thereafter in 2009, Spirtas made his debut as a Broadway producer on the critically acclaimed revival of Finian's Rainbow, and in 2012 he co-produced the hit Broadway musical: Priscilla…Queen of the Desert. As Spirtas' success as a Broadway producer blossomed, and grew, his passion for acting, never stopped. In 2014, after running into Days Of Our Lives alum, Michael Slade in a New York gym, the two set out to create the critically acclaimed 6 x Emmy Award Winning Digital Drama Series: AFTER FOREVER… A story about love, loss, and new beginnings. In 2019, AFTER FOREVER– Season 1 made history by becoming the first LGBTQ-themed drama series to win six Emmy awards across any platform. Spirtas received an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Digital Drama, along with 3 additional Emmys that he shares with Slade for Outstanding Digital Drama Series 2019 and Outstanding Writing Team for a Digital Drama 2019 and 2020. No matter how many Emmys Spirtas has, it's pretty safe to bet that AFTER FOREVER just might have been the very inspiration for Days of Our Lives Writers to have his character, Dr. Craig Wesley return to Salem to ‘come out' of the closet. A full circle moment for the soap opera character… And Spirtas for sure. AFTER FOREVER Season 3 - The Final Season, Begins streaming on Amazon prime late spring 2024.
