A chance find at age 14 at Flinders Street Station led Tim Chappel to a life of silver lamé, sequins, girdles, and an Oscar. Costume designer, Tim Chappel can't remember all the places he lived, growing up on Army bases around the country, and overseas. His one constant interest was nature. He'd look for stick insects to pin into his collection and draw endless terrestrial orchids. Tim was ready to focus his life on botany. This all changed when he found a copy of French Vogue at Flinders Street Station in Melbourne. He was entranced by the glamour of the clothes he saw, and felt an instant connection to the tailoring.Tim was creating shorts for bartenders and costumes for drag queens at Sydney's Albury Hotel when he was asked if he would like to design the costumes for an Australian film called The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. This episode of Conversations touches on film-making, the Oscars, award season, LGBTQI+, queerness, Hollywood, Oprah, Tom Cruise, Los Angeles, Army Brat, military families, orchids, flowers, Guy Pearce, Hugo Weaving, Stephan Elliott, Terence Stamp.

In honor of Pride Month and celebrating this film's upcoming 30th Anniversary, it's time to embark on the exciting adventures of three drag queens travelling across the Australian Outback on a bus which actually shares its title with this movie. :) This Oscar-winning cult hit was directed by Stephen Elliott and stars Terrance Stamp, Guy Pearce, and Hugo Weaving....yes THAT Hugo Weaving just about five years before his big break as Agent Smith in The Matrix! Everyone's glammed up and wearing fantastically elaborate costumes as they give musical performances (mostly lip syncing the hits) to various audiences wherever they stop. And the eventual goal of this mission? We're here and back with one of the best films of the 90s, To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar It's Pride month and it was beyond time for us to review it here and who better than Mikey to talk about the long lasting legacy this film has had over the past 30 years. There are so many things that have changed and moved forward but there is still more to be done. We talk a lot about the incredible characters and arcs throughout, how this is one of Mikey's foundational films, the FASHION and BODY, the endless cameos, and how quotable this entire script is. While I know The Adventures of Priscilla Queen of the Desert isn't the same film but since they were released within a year of each other we compare and contrast, and explain why they should be seen as a 'double feature'.Off-topic rants include: why we need a costume museum, why we need a spin off series of Noxeema and Clara, LOTR/The Hobbit movie seriesMentioned: Trixie Mattel on Reacts To Wong Foo To Wong Foo Stage Production Trailer---Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! Giles was 12 when he watched Abba win Eurovision in 1974 and was instantly besotted – and thus required to spend the next 20 years wrestling with The Love That Dare Not Speak Its Name. His thunderingly funny, fond and illuminating book – My My!: Abba Through The Years – traces their story, looks at the snobbery and critical mauling they endured and figures out how they made records so universally popular and which still move him to tears 50 years later. It's also the best example of any book we've read that can explain the mechanics of music to a non-musician. It's highly recommended, as is this podcast which alights upon … … a 50 year-old story – “for 42 of which they haven't existed”. .. the vicious early press reaction - “calculatingly commercial”, “dispassionate” … … the divine clunkiness of their early TV appearances. … the sense of the melancholy we've attached to their music - and why. ... the immense value of splitting up early and never reforming or publicly falling out. … the immaculate construction of Dancing Queen (which opens with the second half of the chorus) and why “there are two types of wedding disco – ones that start with Dancing Queen and terrible ones.” … the maturity of Abba's lyrics – about marriages, relationships, children and other subjects pop music rarely tackles. … why Abba Voyage is so affecting that he's seen it three times. … and Muriel's Wedding, Priscilla Queen of the Desert and other key factors in The Comeback. From Broadway Star, to TV Heartthrob… From his humble beginnings on Broadway at age 18 in A Chorus Line, to ‘standby' for Hugh Jackman in The Boy From Oz— Spirtas is most recognized around the world for his eight year stint as Dr. Craig Wesley from NBC/peacock Daytime Drama: Days of Our Lives, as well as the cult classic film sequels: Friday the 13th – Part VII: The New Blood, and Wes Craven's: The Hills Have Eyes – Part II. Before departing the soap in 2000, Spirtas had great fun playing his DAYS character opposite Matt LeBlanc's ‘Dr. Drake Ramory' on FRIENDS: The One That Could Have Been- Part 1. In 2008 the 30-year acting veteran produced the NY Shakespeare Festival reading-presentation of Don Cummings': A Good Smoke, starring Academy Award winning actress, Meryl Streep, and directed by Tony Award winning director, Pam McKinnon. Shortly thereafter in 2009, Spirtas made his debut as a Broadway producer on the critically acclaimed revival of Finian's Rainbow, and in 2012 he co-produced the hit Broadway musical: Priscilla…Queen of the Desert. As Spirtas' success as a Broadway producer blossomed, and grew, his passion for acting, never stopped. In 2014, after running into Days Of Our Lives alum, Michael Slade in a New York gym, the two set out to create the critically acclaimed 6 x Emmy Award Winning Digital Drama Series: AFTER FOREVER… A story about love, loss, and new beginnings. In 2019, AFTER FOREVER– Season 1 made history by becoming the first LGBTQ-themed drama series to win six Emmy awards across any platform. Spirtas received an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Digital Drama, along with 3 additional Emmys that he shares with Slade for Outstanding Digital Drama Series 2019 and Outstanding Writing Team for a Digital Drama 2019 and 2020. No matter how many Emmys Spirtas has, it's pretty safe to bet that AFTER FOREVER just might have been the very inspiration for Days of Our Lives Writers to have his character, Dr. Craig Wesley return to Salem to ‘come out' of the closet. A full circle moment for the soap opera character… And Spirtas for sure. AFTER FOREVER Season 3 - The Final Season, Begins streaming on Amazon prime late spring 2024. Welcome to the Left of Str8 Podcasts: This is our “Left of Str8 Show” Interview Series, where we tell the stories of our amazing LGBTQ Community and fantastic Straight Ally's. It's Day Two for our Premiere Week of Season 7. Today is a Salute to the Movies with two brand new releases coming out. I have been a fan of Guy Pearce since “Priscilla Queen of the Desert,” and I jumped at the opportunity to speak with the Director of the new psychological horror film, “Sunrise,” Andrew Baird. I was also able to talk to two of the films stars, Alex Pettyfer, who I have loved since his movie, “I Am Number Four,” and Kurt Yeager, who has been on some of my favorite television series. (unfortunately Guy was unavailable, but I'll get you my pretty sometime soon.) Summary In this conversation, I talk with the Director and two Actors from the new film, “Sunrise.” It's a psychological horror take on the Vampyre mythology. Set in the Pacific Northwest but filmed in Northern Ireland, the landscapes and cinematography are out of this world. Director Andrew Baird has done world building with his Sci Fi Fantasy film “Zone 414,” and done intense character development with actor turned singer, turned actor again, Machine Gun Kelly. Andrew is a master storyteller and knows how to control a set. Alex Pettyfer was not going to make any typical Vampire movie, he wanted to bring the deep brooding characterizations and even cut most of his lines written for the part. Kurt Yeager takes the films theme of fear to heart, playing the town sheriff that is caught between opposing forces. You are going to enjoy this movie opening in theatres on January 19 and available to stream as well.
