Our Summer in the Cities tour hits Austin, where humid nights, neon-lit bars, and guitar solos spilling out of every doorway create a sound that is rootsy, rebellious, and relentlessly forward looking. From country soul divorce tales to genre bending blues epics, Don and Dude drop the needle on two records that pin Austin's independent spirit, musical diversity, and guitar obsessed heart to wax.The AlbumsWillie Nelson – Phases and Stages (1974)Phases and Stages finds Willie Nelson breaking from Nashville convention with a focused, empathetic divorce concept album that follows both the wife and husband through heartbreak, barroom coping, and hard won acceptance, all tied together by a recurring “phases and stages” theme. Warm Muscle Shoals grooves, unfussy arrangements, and Willie's conversational storytelling turn everyday moments like washing dishes, hanging at the corner beer joint, and nursing a Bloody Mary morning into a fully realized Texas breakup saga that feels as much Austin outlaw as it does country soul short story.Gary Clark Jr. – Blak and Blu (2012)Blak and Blu introduces Gary Clark Jr. as a modern Austin guitar hero who refuses to stay in one lane, blending Texas blues, fuzzed out rock, soul, RB, funk, and hip hop tinged production into a bold, genre fluid statement. From the brassy swagger of “Ain't Messin 'Round” and the fuzz drone of “Bright Lights” to the tender soul of “You Saved Me” and the stripped back “Next Door Neighbor Blues,” the record stretches blues tradition into the 21st century without losing its grit or its roots.Diggin' AlbumsViolet Grohl – Be Sweet To Me (2026)Moody alt rock that mixes 90s style guitar crunch with dreamy, emotionally raw songs.Quiet Riot – Metal Health (1983)Big hook early MTV metal packed with shout along choruses and head banging riffs.Doublespeak – Doublespeak (2026)Synth driven covers project that turns cult favorites into lush, modern electronic pop.Peter Frampton – Carry the Light (2026)Melodic late career rock set that pairs Frampton's signature guitar with reflective, guest studded songs.Follow & SupportFollow the show on Instagram, Facebook, Threads, and Bluesky @albumnerds, and support the podcast by subscribing, rating, reviewing, and sharing it with another music obsessive who still loves hearing whole albums front to back.“There's so much energy in Austin, it's kind of the kernel of where all this music came from.” – Dave Grohl

Judson considers moving in with Brian. Brian and his family make a return visit to Cats: The Jellicle Ball now that it's on Broadway. Judson sets out on an adventure to find his misdelivered phone. Brian and his husband participate in their neighborhood's annual progressive dinner. The Hookup of the Week comes from a repeat submitter who takes some lessons from the podcast into his latest encounter. The two are then joined by Rod Thomas, aka electro-pop music artist and DJ Bright Light Bright Light! Rod sits down with Brian and Judson just two days before kicking off his co-headling Cosmic Light tour with “Queen of the Universe” winner and “Drag Race Brasil” host, Grag Queen, and talks about his mission with this and every one of his tours to bring joy and build community during these dark and divisive times. He teaches Brian and Judson all about his home country of Wales and its connection to music, he goes deep into his friendships and collaborations with Elton John and Scissor Sisters, and talks about how he has made a name and career for himself without ever signing with a label. They discuss the prevalence of misogyny in the gay community, they share thoughts on maintaining youth and taking risks throughout one's life, and they debate the importance of sex as a subject of artistic expression. Rod then helps Brian and Judson respond to a Go Ask Your Dad question from a 50 year-old listener in a 25-year open relationship who has never used the gay hookup apps and wants advice about how to start. Amy Chavez talks with Robert Whiting about his recently released book Gamblers, Fraudsters, Dreamers & Spies: The Outsiders who Shaped Modern Japan (Tuttle, 2024). Bob talks about several colorful characters who populated Tokyo in the 60s and 70s, including strong women such like Australian bar hostess Maggie, who became famous for using scissors to cut off the neckties of customers, and a female yakuza gangster who carried a revolver in her purse. And if you think Japan doesn't have a drug problem, think again. Whiting talks about North Korean drug-smuggling and its contribution to a surging number of meth users in the country. Lastly, while most tourists to Japan can't help but be impressed by Japanese taxi drivers who wear white gloves and offer impeccably polite service, things weren't always so good when hailing a cab in Japan. In fact, drivers used to be rude, dirty and reportedly, the job was so loathsome that Japanese wives were embarrassed to tell people their husbands were taxi drivers! As Whiting tells us, that all changed with the MK Taxi company, started by a Korean determined to put a new face on ride hailing. Pete has added a $1 a month tier for “Well-Wishers” and Cheerleaders of the Show. This is a passion project, a DIY operation, and Pete would love for your help in promoting what he's convinced is a unique and spirited look at an often-ignored art form. The intro song for The Chills at Will Podcast is “Wind Down” (Instrumental Version), and the other song played on this episode was “Hoops” (Instrumental)” by Matt Weidauer, and both songs are used through ArchesAudio.com. Send me a text. K-Pop is apparently the coolest thing for kids to watch now. I myself thought it was being on Social Media or gaming. Nope, it is is K-pop Demon Hunters. Are you watching with your little ones? If you are not You might want to take a peek at what they are watching. If you are allowing your toddlers to watch and they are not sleeping at night this show could be the reasoning. At a certain age kids DO NOT KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN REALITY AND FANTASY. Just my opinion.❤️Henrie Thank you for listening.Go find your Blessings!

Exposure to artificial light at night disrupts your body's natural sleep-wake rhythm, raising your risk of heart disease, heart attack, stroke, and heart failure A large-scale study found that adults living in the brightest nighttime environments had up to a 56% higher risk of heart failure and a 47% higher risk of heart attack compared to those in the darkest settings When combined with air pollution, bright night environments amplify cardiovascular risk even more — nighttime light accounted for up to 39% of the extra heart failure risk linked to polluted air Nighttime light not only harms your heart but also increases the risk of mental health disorders, including depression, anxiety, PTSD, and bipolar disorder, while reducing exposure to bright daylight worsens these effects Restoring a natural light-dark cycle — bright days and truly dark nights — helps regulate your hormones, protect your heart, improve mood, and reduce your risk of chronic disease

In this episode, I explain cortisol and science-based protocols for properly setting your cortisol rhythm, which can significantly increase your daytime energy, focus, mood, and stress resilience, while also improving your sleep quality. Most people mistakenly think cortisol is bad, and many assume their levels are too high, when in fact many health and performance challenges simply stem from a disrupted cortisol rhythm. Getting your cortisol rhythm right can be transformative for your health and performance. I outline behavioral, nutritional, and supplement-based strategies to raise or lower your cortisol levels at the appropriate times of day and night. I also provide specific protocols for overcoming burnout. If you're dealing with stress, low energy, hormone or sleep challenges—or simply want to optimize these for the sake of your physical and mental health and performance—this episode offers science-backed protocols to help.
